Thanks to all who have participated thus far. We've seen some beautiful examples of Randall-Made knives. I hope no one has tridecaphobia.

From Randall Made Knives: The History of the Man and the Blades by Robert L. Gaddis, pp. 136-137

Quote:

Interest in this unusual style of fighting knife was also attributable to The Iron Mistress movie. One of the action sequences involved a knife fight between James Bowie, played by Alan Ladd, and the barkeep of a rough-and-tumble frontier tavern. The barkeep pulled out a long straight-bladed, needle-pointed stiletto, which was referred to as an "Arkansas toothpick." Naturally, Jim Bowie and his famous knife won that battle also.

After receiving a few inquiries in the mail, Bo decided he should make up a similar style knife....

Bo called the Arkansas Toothpick the "Model 13," and for its standard style, he gave it the same lugged hilt and leather washer handle as the Model 12 bowies. The blade length, width, and shape have not varied from the first one to the present....

The Arkansas Toothpick has never been as popular as the large bowies are. In fact, the 12-inch style is seldom ordered these days. When Bo brought out a smaller version in the early 1960s, sales of the Model 13 greatly increased. This small toothpick had a 6-inch blade and made a good self-defense dagger or a mighty fine letter opener. Bo opened all of his mail with a special one made in the mid-1960s by the shop crew and presented to him as a gift.

Lady and gentlemen, may we please see some Model 13s?

Kevin

The model 13 is one of my favorites. Here is a 13-12 and a 13-12 miniature. Both have old Westinghouse micarta handles and roughback sheaths. The miniature has a stainless steel blade with Randall stamp and a separate S.

I missed that one...... Odd length for sure. Based on the sheath stitching it's a late 80's early 90's knife....

Would that "Johnson" (Johnson Law for an eBay handle?) be one you & I know from the Blade show Mitchell? Definately a Johnny Johnson sheath. 1986 or newer...would be my guess.

Hey Doc,
Great looking #13!
And really nice photo. I like the reflection. The lighting brings out the grain in the Micarta beautifully.

Here is an attempt at a Faisal set. It wasn't too cold out today, but cloudy, and the light was soft, so I took the opportunity to pair the toothpick with a near twin Smitty.

New model 13-12 and 13-6 similarly equipped. It appears that there is a double black spacer by the hilt on the 13-6 and it looks really cool.
I am amazed how great they turned out. Thanks Randall craftsmen.

of course it is ironwood, my favorite wood. It is dealer supplied though, since the model 13 is one of the least made knives, I wanted some great figure in the wood, since I won't be getting any more Toothpicks

New arrival from RMK. Maroon micarta with brass hardware. Definitely a medieval feel to this model. Not really a very practical model so I doubt that I would ever use or carry it but I will definitely enjoy admiring it. I think I'll need to add the big brother before too long.

Agree about the forward curved hilts Chief. I'm not a big fan of lugged hilts even on the large knives but on a small model they just don't seem to work at all, at least not for me.

Chip used to shoot on Gary Randall and Hal DuPont's skeet team. He sold most of his Randall knives through Perry. Quite a few were sold, over the past few years.

I have one acquired on eBait from a person who was in semi-high office in a state bordering Texas. I don't include his name because he had some legal issues and more importantly we sent Special Fighter boxes to his son in Iraq.

Seems I was really into old yeller and antique gold micarta back then.

I got this one recently from Miles Welze. I like it because it has the traditional spacer arrangement which is seldom seen on the big knives.

There are inconsistencies in Pete's book. One of which would involve the example below. An Arkansas Toothpick in a Clarence Moore sheath.
Historical ref: According to Bob Gaddis and the Randall records, the 1st #13's came to be in April of 1953. According to Pete's book, a bit more generalized granted, Moore sheaths were used from the late 1930's into the 1940's. It is difficult to use the defense of "1st one in...last one used" for this Moore sheath. It could not have been "in" at all earlier than the early 1950's.
Safe to say, regardless of exactly "when".."THIS" is a scarce find! All the brass "tricked-out" fitting and hardware, along with an elephant ivory handle and a "no hone" Moore!
Enjoy, Capt. Chris
PS: I picked this up from a colleague and customer "after" the Gator show had closed on Sunday...and "just" before he left the show. ( I gave everybody their chance)!!!

Capt.,

What a great 13, however I don't know much about this model. Would it be common for the stamp to face in the opposite direction? You did good at Lakeland, I guess I should have stayed longer that afternoon. Thanks for sharing a really exceptional example.

The reverse blade trademark, as well as name etching, is testament to the fact that this toothpick was probably half of a Faisal set. The "left" positioned knife would have the the opposing blade trademark so that it would display properly with the large Bowie located on the right. This has been evident with blades of this configuration in the past. I don't believe it can be ordered this way today but I am not sure of that. Nice toothpick though, no doubt.
Best, Capt. Chris

Been looking for some "Old Yeller" for a few years and wanted it on a big knife. Looks great on this big 13.

I have never laid eyes on or held a big toothpick, hardly see them out at shows! Might be why I don't own one. I used to say the same thing about 19's, but blade fixed that!!

Thanks James. Yes, it is polished stag and I did get it from Gary.

I never knew how rare this handle shape is in polished stag.

Plus Gary gave me a great deal.

Can we get a shot of the butt? Hard to get that handle shape done in stag and not hit the "fluff" as I call it.

Several years ago I bought this model 13 from a nice man from Louisiana. We sent boxes to his son in Iraq when we were doing the Special Fighter project is how I got to know him. At some point, he moved to Oklahoma and I lost contact with him.

The reason I am posting this photo is that it is a nice looking model 13 with AGM, which I am very fond of, and to ask how I can determine if the buttcap is aluminum or nickel silver.

Seems to be a simple question but I have be away from Randalls for a while and I need to refresh my expertise.

Tom--

Others can help, but I think the color on the two alloys is different.

The aluminum has more of a whitish silver color when polished, and tending toward dull sheen and sometimes gray when it gets a bit of tarnish.

Nickle silver has more of a yellow color to it because of the copper in it, and tarnishes yellow so at times it looks like brass.

Also, nickel silver is heavier.

Interesting observation, yesterday I was considering a treatise * Opus Amplissimum de Arte Athletica (Cod.icon. 393) * by Paulus Hector Mair ~ 1540 year.

The pictures seemed very similar to me, I took one and put it on top. The fact that this is a very ancient form, that's for sure, I saw the same blades from the Bronze Age, but the coincidence of the ratio of the lengths of the blade, and even the cross-sectional profile of the blade, the handle and the width of the guard (except for the shock pommel) is very surprising and pleasing.

Also the eyes.

When armored soldiers were injured or wounded and laying on the ground, whoever came across a live one would stab them in the eyes to finish them off.
