James, I know this is taking us off topic, so I'll be quick... is the declination of your compass correct for Germany? I recall the Eastern US coast GM angle being about 80 mils off. Looks like yours is about 3200 mils!

Ha ha! I have no idea. I bought it just as a background item for my pictures and didn't play around with it (honestly speaking don't even know how this thing works) .... :-)

James, you probably first noticed the dial is calibrated in mils,(0-6400) instead of degrees. There is an adjustment screw on the left side that moves the scale. When looking at a topographical map you will find a "GM" (grid to magnetic) conversion graphin the legend, telling you what change to apply to the compass for that particular map's location. This permits accurate navigation without having to figure the GM angle every time you consult the compass. It is calibrated in mils rather than degrees for artillerymen. This particular compass also allows for measurement of "site to crest", determining the lowest angle at which artillery may be safely fired from a position. In a former life I was an Artillery Gunnery Sergeant, hence my rant. Love the knife, and the compass!

Hi Wally,

thats interesting information and nice to hear, that you appreciate both, the knife and that Brunton M2 compass in my pictures. I think these days the M2 has a plastic housing where mine has still a metal case.

A Mod. 1-7" in stainless. Got it in 2005. And it is still in my collection because it was my first Randall.
