Ok, how about showing off some that Micarta and that includes all types of synthetics; bone linen, etc.

That 5 looks great Rod. At some point I am going to have to rid myself of the micarta I have leftover.

You are no doubt right. But when ask for and got "orange micarta" from Tom, I didn't ask what it really was.

BTW that knife sat in our NY PO Box for almost two years because we could not cross the border. Talk about how long is the wait for a RMK, sheeesh!

Randall Shaw-Leibowitz Special "LS" Green Micarta 6" Carbon Steel NS Non-etched SFG Teardrop.

Sherrill Shaw and Leonard Leibowitz were a talented husband and wife team that produced many collectable knives in the 1970's and early 1980’s.

Shaw-Leibowitz stopped production at 125 to 150 knives since this is what was ordered at the time.

A total of 300 blades for these knives were made. Gaddis’s book states 125 knives were finished with the Shaw-Leibowitz etching. An article in 1990 RKS newsletter in which it stated 144 knives were made with the Shaw-Leibowitz etching. Randall dealer, Jack Crider, was able to get the other blades and had them made up in many different handles, but these knives were not etched.

Mick Olson,

You were my inspiration to have this built. Basically similar to yours except border patrol handle and sawteeth—no teeth instead.

Mini-1 Micarta 1970's on the Bay...

The 1970's Mini 5 in the other thread made me go browsing online...

Came across this Mini-1 described as coming from that same era.

The photos show a leather sleeve instead of the standard sheath, PLUS the numeral 1 stamped on the back.

Back in the day, when you ordered green micarta from the shop, you got this: Green "canvas" micarta, which was actually more "OD"-"LIGHT BROWN" in color after some time had passed. I believe this "Stasher" was made in the early ages of Sullivan's sheaths as is evident by the "baby dot" snaps and linen stitching!
Model #14-7 /2"...CDT version!
Stay Sharp & Ho-Ho!

If you go to the main page of this forum and look under Randall Picture Gallery, there is a link on how to post pictures. They can only be ? MB or smaller. It states the size. If the photo is too big, it will tell you.

Thanks to RickT's good advice and my local computer geek for getting my photo-posting back in order...Just for the record: It wasn't my fault (not anybody elses either) but a software issue, hidden internally in the bowels of my computer(ish) components!
That said, here's a couple of pics of the old..."original" green canvas micarta on the afore-mentioned Model #14-7 1/2"...
Best, Capt. Chris

Micarta should be good for any day of the week.
Couple examples from the late 60’s.

From 12 years ago: Model #26-4", Pathfinder, with a black micarta "NASA" center. It was made from a salvaged (push-trip) insulator rod, as is pictured with a "younger Captain"!

S/N 28: Bearcamp Special in "white lineal micarta"...&, yes: It cracks! (That's why it was a very "short-lived" shop-supplied material). It makes it rare though...and on a Bearcamp...even more so.
Happy Micarta Monday,
Capt. Chris
PS: You "may" have noticed the "transitional" Sullivan's sheath. It was made, probably in 1997 or 98. That would explain the baby dot hone pocket snap..."BUT"...(There's that word again.)...When it was finally fitted to my knife, the pewter "logo" snaps were already the norm, i.e. 1999 or later. Just one more of those "things" that makes this RMK collecting interesting...CCS

Cap, can you say where that red micarta came from? I invested in quite a lot of it and after years of being store in the safe the red looks more like "light maroon".It is still a good looking grip, just not bright cherry red like this old photo.

Tom,
Mine has also "faded/altered" over time. Guess we are all just, plain much happier when it's Old Westinghouse darkening than our "not-so-cherry" red micarta...but it appears to "fade" similarly!

Cap,
I still have a couple of blocks of red. Do you think the red fades only after being finished? Should the blocks still finish out as the cherry red we knew and loved? Btw, the faded red is still a good looking grip.

Micarta Memorial Day Monday,
Best wishes to all on the day that we're "supposed" to remember those who paid & gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country...(NOT: To go out and buy a mattress!).
Model 1 in Ivorite and, to me, the absolute "best-looking" combo for "red, white & blue" spacers.
Bless those on their special day and their families as well.
Respectfully submitted,
Captain Chris Stanaback

Cap, that is a beautiful knife. To my eye the bone linen micarta looks very similar to antique gold micarta, at least on the interweb. I am sure you have one of each in your collection. Would it be possibe for you to post Randalls with each grip in the same photo?

Tom,
Perhaps, at some point, but my "Stash" is located (for a good portion anyway) offsite. It would be major labor to locate all my various bone linen micarta examples (& I most certainly don't have them all) and gather them up for the "group shot".
Sorry,
Capt. Chris

Blade Show 2022, Gary Clinton had found some of the old Westinghouse Brown Micarta from Tom Clinton's collection and made up a couple of knives.
I asked for a 2-5 to fit a high ride sheath I had.
The knives came just before Blade 2023

Just a basic black Micarta handle on a plain Fisherman-Hunter, but one of the few Model 7's you'll ever see with finger grips.

Most of my Randall collection has micarta grips. My favorite micarta is/was the red micarta but even stored in a climate controled safe it has turned dark and has a brown look. No problems with the black micarta. Black is a good choice.

I know it's not Monday, but...I wanted to show my nifty older 6 option Model 7-4.5", SS blade, Thumb Notches, NS hilt squared, maroon micarta, Wrist thong, and white faced compass, in a Johnson tight stitched pouch sheath.

Is this a separate S? Beautiful stamp, regardless.

Do you know if the “new” ivorite can be scrimmed? Heck I do not even know if the old Ivorite could be scrimmed?
Just curious.

WOW!
No posts since August of last year? Not good. Here's something interesting, micarta-related. Some examples of NASA handle material to include some brown micarta!
Stay Sharp, Capt. Chris
PS: I'll post a finished knife, made with NASA brown soon after this post. Some NASA brown is micarta, some is G-3, some is linen, some paper and some canvas based....just depended on the cheapest bid at the time!
