Wow David, that's terrible! Especially this late in the fall. We had 2+ days of rain here and squashed all of our forest fires. Hope yours are stopped soon.

That is the Cameron Peak Fire edging in on Estes Park.
It is the largest fire in Colorado's recorded history.
About 320 square miles yesterday.
The experts think that it may be the end of November before fully contained due to high winds every day.
Started August 13th - cause not yet known.
Two more started in Boulder County just above the city of Boulder and spread rapidly due to the winds.
I think that totals 13 currently burning.

If you haven't had any lightning storms lately, then it's arson. More than half of all western forest fires have been arson terrorists.

Mike--

I have seen a recent report that about 90% of forest fires are caused by man, deliberate or accidental.

In the current environment, perhaps more. I saw a report about a guy who was out on bail for starting a fire, and was arrested again when caught trying to start another one on a roadside.

Yes Larry, that guy was arrested and let go twice for arson, and is still free the last I heard.

What the hell is wrong with people now days. We just let these thugs go so they can do it all over. If I had my way they would be put on a frontline fighting these fires let them see how they like that.

Well now, a new one I have never seen before.
6,000 acres per hour due to the winds.
The aptly named East Troublesome Fire started up near Granby and Grand Lake overnight. Both towns required emergency evacuation in the middle of the night.
Forest Service closed forests, so no hunting, camping, or fire starting.

More news about the East Troublesome Fire.
From Wednesday to this morning (Friday) it has gone from 19,000 acres to 170,000 acres.
A retired fireman and his wife had a beautiful house just north of Grand Lake.
It is reported that they retreated to a concrete bunker under the house instead of evacuating.
The bunker protected them from the flames and the collapse of the house, but not from the 1300 degree temperature.

There is snow predicted by the end of the week-end, but the whole area is being evacuated to front range cities.
Rocky Mountain National Park is closed with the Cameron Peak Fire on one side and the East Troublesome Fire on the other.
Only 12 miles separate the two largest fires in Colorado history.

it is hard for me to grasp the damage that these fires can do. I have a grandson stationed in CO. and he says he is not in the way of the fire. I hope they get a good snow to help them out.

Snow will help.
The Cameron Peak Fire had a foot of snow about a week ago.
Slowed it down for a day, but the snow acted as insulation.
When the winds came back, the fire went back up into the tree tops and spread rapidly.
Drought and high winds, mixed with embers and flames.
Oh boy, hang on!

My great-grandfather came to Texas at age 18 in 1850.

He located his "Headright" along the Jefferson to Dallas "highway" shown in the pictures. Remnants of the old "highway" run the entire length of the Southern boundary of my property.

It is not easy to get to, but I finally bush hogged my way to it this past week. We are about a week or two away from the pretty Fall colors, but I'm ready to take some awesome pictures when they turn.

Look closely at the last picture and see the rocks in a circle around an old water well. Daddy told me that Papa told him that Pappy told him that the well was here in 1850 and that he camped there for several months before relocating about a mile or so further West.

It is a beautiful time of the year weather is still warm during the day and not cold at night yet. Deer season is in and I really like the last hour before dark, magic things happen then.

Looks like the snow would put out the Colorado fires.
But, surprisingly, they are still burning.
The fire fighters are gaining control.
And, we are getting snow today.

Sorry to see/hear winter has appeared early. It is probably good for the forests/fires in your area.
My sister lives in Canada, due north of you. They had a couple feet of snow the past couple days. But I cut the grass today and sat on our deck this afternoon and had a beer, after cycling for 2 hours today wearing shorts ( and a top on of course!)
The weather is WEIRD!!

Snowed a couple of inches this morning, quit, but now snowing heavy. Good hunting weather. Had 30 head of elk in the back yard, one spike, rest cows and calves. No way to get close to the spike with lookout cows giving the alarm.

This is my driveway after two days of hard rain. I live at the base of this mountain which is not that high by western standards but fair for around here. These mtn.'s were at one time millions of years ago were higher than the Rockies time has worn them down.

Wow, pretty area in it's own right. I grew up in Virginia and went to summer camp at Camp Maxwelton near Lexington under Jump Mountain. Lovely area. If I had to live back east, that's where I would live.

South fork in the fall of 83, the first time I used hellgrammite’s. The smallmouth bass loved them.

Eric, I love smallmouth fishing. Back in the 80's I worked as a raft guide on the New River Gorge in WV. We used to take a rowing rig with two or three of us. One guy would boat control while the other two fished the eddy lines below the rapids. World class fishing.
