Not saying if I would be in or not "But" this year was the 50th of our landing on the moon. A model 17 would be very a befitting tribute and a model not done before to my recollection. This is a knife that I'm not sure has enough depth for options.

Hmmmmmm Well hunting season is right around the corner. Maybe a 8-4 bird and trout but with some different options? Maybe white ivorite handle with black spacers and nickel silver hilt? Tool steel blade old school grind and black sheath?

The nicest Model 8-4 I had was SS,NS squared, Stag(no charge), 21 Crow's beak, Wrist thong. Still have it. I like the top sharpened for cutting off fish heads. I used one all summer as a fishing guide and loved it. It was just a standard 8-4.

If we did a model 17 like Warren suggested, could we do customer supplied scales on it? Some NASA g-3 would be a nice tribute.

OK...before we go any farther on down the line...There are "no options" to be had on a Model #17..."except" sheath choice and etching...period! So...if you do, indeed, believe that we really did put a man on the moon, we could always do a raffle for one at a later date...but a "build"? There's nothing to "build" for a build...just sayin'.
Ideas in line with hunting season sounds cool,,,or Thanksgiving,,,or Christmas...Etc. Etc...Keep 'em coming.
Best, Capt. Chris

Capt, question for you... if we were to do a carving set would the options count as 1 or 3 since there are 3 pieces? Just checking but it may be an option for us to consider.

Hope this helps, Capt. Chris

Here’s an interesting thought.....if it was a 17 could we specify that the shop build it like the originals. Not with that funky blade they now sport.

Model 8 would be good. I like that model. I had three of them, but gave one to a buddy and my #1 daughter now has my other two.

"Specify" to your hearts content... Maybe the next build you can "specify" that we build a 1940's #1 or a 1960's #18 etc. not like the funky blades we "sport" today...wth is that?!?

Well said, my friend...well said. NOW: So far we have a suggestion of building an "old-style" Model #8. Let's do a "ROLL CALL VOTE"! Vote for one please:
A) Yep!
B) Nope!
NOTHING is decided yet. If you vote "Nope!" please add "your" model suggestion.
Thanks, Capt. Chris

For hunting, I've always found the smaller knives most useful.
The model 8 is very cool.
But "B."
I always thought a Mod 20 or 21 tricked out would be nice.

The blade on the current 17 is funky looking......simple as that Scott. My comment wasn’t said to start an argument with you or anyone else. It was a legit comment. How cool would it be to build a 17 exactly like the early 17’s. There are probably many of us that would want to own a 17 like that. As for your comment about building a 40’s Mod 1 or a 60’s Mod 18 well they haven’t changed Nearly as much as the 17. But yeah I would like that too. Would you have not been such a wise guy if I had said “awkward” blade instead of “funky”?

B.
In the spirit of QB Nix winning his first game at Auburn against the Oregon Ducks, lets go hunting some quackers.
A hunting knife, Model 8, is great, or a Model 7, or another smaller "Duck" Knife.

OK Crew:
"B" has a lot of action, some even with recommendations. How about this, in the interests of moving this build along. Let's have a
"ROLL CALL VOTE"! For for one...and one "ONLY"...(& 1 time only please).
Capt. Chris
A) Model #8-4" (Exact model to be determined)
B) Model #7-4 1/2" or 5" (Exact model to be determined later
C) Other...& you must "list" your "other" preference or your vote doesn't count.

Please notice the difference between the 2 Model #8 "blades"...with the "old style" being a Bowie clip point and the Modern being a straight, clip point.

Yes, we just did a Model 7 with a #6 grind not long ago. Nice one too.

The Captain's Stash is wide and deep.

Any of these would be nice to do a build around.

I better read all the posts again, and maybe vote for a model that I don't have.

C -- GTR. Don't have one so what the heck. Can we specify that the shop put a funky little hump on it?

I have one stuck away, but a gussied up Forum Build would be great.

OK Crew:
Not a great response to this whole build? Huh? I guess we'd better have a real quick vote before I exhaust anymore time on this baby. BTW: #8 leads the GTR by a score of 7-4. All others are "off the board". Right now I need to have a vote to find merit for building "anything"!
...What say you?
1) Yes: I'm not sick of 'em.
2) Nope: Had enough for now
I need more than 10 members to get on board or I, along with these builds, will take a vacation from pursuing this venture.
Best, Capt. Chris

I appreciate the time and effort it takes you to put these builds together, from beginning to end.

And it’s been said before, these threads/ builds are a valuable resource for the ins and outs of optioning out a Randall model.

An enthusiastic “1” from me. Yes!

Thanks, Gary

OK..CREW,
Glad you're all on board for this one...or should it be "these"? How about this idea: A PAIR BUILD? We could make:
A) RMK Model #8-4" & 8-4", Old Style
..............OR..............
B) RMK Model "GTR" & "DENMARK SPECIAL"

WE could have 2 members gettin' a new knife, instead on 1! What say you?
Capt. Chris
PS: The pair would have to be made with RMK "shop-supplied" materials.

Right now it's all tied up @ 9 votes each. I'll give this until tonight and let's see where we are. Granted, I didn't ask for the roll call vote but, nonetheless, we're tied at this point!
Vote, if you haven't.
Thanks, Capt. Chris

Sure looked like a roll call vote to me but .... consensus opinion among folks I know (especially my wife) is that I don't know my butt from a hole in the ground.

Time for (after some good ideas posted) a "ROLL CALL VOTE"! I want you to vote for one of the following:
A) Matching #8's
B) Different #8's
Thanks, Capt. Chris
*NOTE- Both Model #8's, if matching do not have to include options listed previously. They can, for example, both have carbon blades and reduced hilts. Nothing else is decided as of now...CCS

Well OK then! I guess that vote is history. We'll build them to match! Let's start with selecting what type of steel to be used. Carbon is standard, on both models, and does not take up any options. Stainless will:
A) Use up an option
B) Raise the cost by $65.00
Let me hear your thoughts.
Best, Capt. Chris

I prefer carbon generally despite the Florida challenges to that type of steel.

Well, the trend is Stainless.

And I think of being "NBS" myself (Nothing But Stainless).

Guess I will vote for Stainless, but have not thought about the other options, and might want to have that first option back later.

We're building matching Model 8's and the blades will be stainless steel! If we use stag handles, we still have 4 options should we need or want them. Consider the possibilities! Let's hear from you.

Yes...Stag is standard...saves an option if enough vote for it.

Now, to complicate it...Cattleman handle on the stag? Probably not allowed...but if I were to win the draw it would then match one of my favorites from about 2000.

I can't recall seeing a Model 22 handle in stag. Not saying they don't exist or even that I have never seen one, just that I can't recall seeing one.

Stag handles, with a crows beak butt are not "#22 shaped". What you see is what you get.
Example below:
Hope this helps, Capt. Chris

Tom,
In "brass", you are 100% correct. In duralumin...not so much. Now "crowding of the hand" (especially a big mitt like I have)? That's a different story. It would look quite cool, of that there is no doubt. Let's see where the bread crumbs lead us??
Thanks, Capt. Chris

Looks to me, opinion-wise, we have a solid preference for the following being "added" to the build sheet:
* Randall Model #8's
* Stainless steel
* Thumb notches
* Stag handle
* Nickel silver hilt
...all those in favor (or not)...ROLL CALL VOTE!!
A) Yes
B) No

Capt. Chris--

No...but almost.

My two cents worth...

This combination only uses 3 of 5 potential options: Stainless blade, Thumb Notches, NS Butt. (Stag is standard.)

Suggestion: (1) Stainless, (2) NS Hilt, (3) Thumb Notches, (4) Wrist thong, and (?) (5) NS Butt Plate.

This small knife does not need any added weight on the butt end to balance out a heavy blade, so the Butt Plate would be a compromise—IF we don’t want to include a compass like several posters suggested.

So, I will hold off on voting for now.

I'm going to go with a "yes" here but .... does this mean that we are done or can we still use those 2 remaining options if folks want to do that?

You are right!

I misread the Captain's post, thought it said NS Butt since it came last in the list.

NS Hilt is great.

OK Crew,
We are "only" voting for a "yes" or a "no" for adding these 2 options to our build. Nothing was mentioned of being finished. We can add more if that is the majority decision.
Best, Capt. Chris
PS: Added to say that, "both" brass & nickel silver butt caps will make these little knives "extremely" butt-heavy! (Just sayin')...CCS

If majority votes "yes", that will be 3 options used. Then id like to add a nickel silver butt Plate and wrist thong to finish off our 5 options. Then add all black spacers and a waxed sheath.

This is etched in stone. What else?
Capt. Chris

* Randall Model #8's
* Stainless steel- (Option #1)
* Thumb notches- (Option #2)
* Nickel silver hilt- (Option #3)
* Stag handle
We could:
* Leave it alone and build it already! (The knives would come with red, white & blue spacers
* Add aluminum & black spacers
* Add aluminum & red spacers
* Add a duralumin butt cap
* Add a crows beak butt cap
* Add a wrist thong
* Add a compass
...OK: You get the idea...Let's make our "plans"!

The knife is set (Knives: Pardon me). I have already ordered them. We did not discuss the sheaths but I had to get my specs in and didn't want to wait another month! They will be coming with standard, tan leather, sheaths but I can tweak that if it is not to either of the winner's liking.
Here's what you have decided:
* Randall Model #8's
* Both the standard catalog version as well as the old style
* Stainless steel
* Thumb notches
* Nickel silver single hilt (not reduced)
* Aluminum & black sheath
* Stag handle
* Wrist thong
Thanks for getting these completed in time. I know the winners will be happy happy, happy! The numbers are coming next! I will post 100 numbers (1-100) and you can pick your own, first come-first served. These 2 knives catalog at $1160.00 (+) USPS "Priority" mail and insurance. The cost, per number will be: $12.50 each..."OR...3 for $35.00.We need to fill all 100 (which we usually do) so the drawing will be announced when the final number(s) is chosen. You can pay for your numbers by calling me (407-436-1113) with credit/debit card info, mail me a check or money order or (as most do) via Paypal to: captstanaback@aol.com
Good Luck and thanks for this unique build. Here we go!

Thanks, Capt. Chris
PS: I'll be shipping out (with TK) early Friday morning to attend the AGCA (Alabama Gun Collectors Assoc.) gun & knife show this weekend. I won't be posting or able to respond until we return this upcoming Tuesday.

Capt. Chris--

I missed a beat, and doing a quick scan don't see whether the drawing will be for a Matched Pair, or for two knives to be drawn individually.

Seems we have lost interest also. Unless we fill the number slots, we cannot have the raffle. I'll give it another week and then, if the numbers are still left un-claimed, refund everyone's $$$

Thanks, Capt. Chris.

These builds are fun to do, and you carry the burden of steering all of us through the possibilities and do all the real work!

Either of these will be a great knife to own, but I think I am partial to the "Old Style"...just saying.

Larry

This was a good build. I think the participation was "fair" but not "great". If BMK decides to do their build I will wait until the build is complete before going forward with another one over here.
I know there are lots of "social media" choices these days. I understand everybody drinking the kool aid "BUT" (Been a while) nothing compares (with regards to RMKs) to knifetalkforums, considering the historical references and education, along with inter-action from "all of you".
Please consider this when making your media choices...and thanks for your participation in this build. There'll be another one real soon...and I have an idea for "By-God, Boy-Howdy" good one!
To the 2 winners, just email me your shipping instructions, full name and a contact phone #, text # &/or email address. I'll take care of the rest.
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Lucky guys! What a nice set of #8s.

I had a similar pair, but my #1 daughter/#3 kid likes them. She pulled out her new model 8 at a field camp, and had all the boys asking to see the “Randall”.

Cheers,

Alan
