I saw that knife . The Stag looks Brand New . Not like a 1940's piece . The Hilt does not seem right ?
The sheath has Large Throat rivets and i have been told those are post WWII ? The grinding of the blade looks odd . The top part was ground into the Randall stamp .
Could this be a put together piece ?
I do not know nearly as much as most of you guys , but something looks off ?

My first thought was that it was a Fantasy piece.
I have never seen the sharpened upper part of blade end so deeply/abruptly and into the Randall logo .
The knife blade was obviously cleaned up and/or reground . No way a 70+ y/o blade is going to look like that .
Hilt appears too new and possibly may have been a double hilt with top part ground down ? Top part of hilt does not end like other pics of knives i have seen from this era . Seems like an abrupt end .
Spacers look like they belong on a leather handle knife . Usually WWII stag have the 7 spacer set up . They also look brand new .
The stag looks brand new . Has appearance of a modern piece . I believe the White Tail deer are usually seen on WWII pieces ?
The double pinning looks a bit off and too close to the hilt ? Appear like new pins ?
The Heiser Sheath with large throat buttons i have "usually" seen on post WWII knives .
A LOT of red flags on this one .
I know many of you guys are much better suited to give opinions , but to me it appears to be a put together piece ( fantasy pice ) .

Definitely rehandled at some point from leather, must likely reground/refinished also...I believe William has touched on all bases of the problems with this "original"...

Some of the knives were made with stag handles. 2 guys apparently were making these knives. Bo Randall and Bill Platt. From what I understand Bill Platt had small hands and therefore his knives had smaller handles, while Bo Randall's knives had a larger circumference because his hands were larger. I hear that each man had a different idea of what one of these Hunters should look like, and therefore there was grind experimentation. From what I have read there was very little consistency from knife to knife and almost every Hunter was a "one off" in one way or another. In the Gaddis book it states that the Hunter hilts being cut off varied from knife to knife. Gaddis also confirmed handle inconsistencies varied from knife to knife. I am not an expert, just FYI.

Sounds like a load of crock to me...
Does anyone have any idea how this gentleman acquired this rehandled/reground knife without knowing that it's had been?

I read that in the eBay ad...and I'm still telling you this is a rehandled/reground leather handle blade...u can tell/see that the stag has been shaped down to the fibers and not shaped together, just one of the tell tale signs of an altered knife..IMO...
I take it you are the owner sir, so where did you come across this knife and what was the story you got on it?, if you don't mind...

The fibers would have to match the hilt in size, therefore the stag would have to be reduced to the size of the fibers. IMO....

Just because I have posted, and have a differing opinion, does not mean I am right. Nor does it mean that I own, or do not own this knife. We all love Randalls and I only mean my differences as to pose another view. I think that Joe's answer is the most efficient; that is, once the knife is in hand would be the best way to evaluate the it for any experienced collector/dealer. Wishing everyone all the best, DR.

Sir, I'm trying to be diplomatic about this, but evidently you got screwed by someone who sold this to you as "original"...and now you are trying to pass it to some other person as such...maybe you have a bug in your ear telling you I'm dead wrong or you are just stubborn, but I know a little about putting knives together also and you are dead wrong about your claims on this particular blade. You need to send this back to whoever sold this to you and demand your monies back! Have them contact me and I'll tell them the same thing...

Very knowledgeable people have come to same conclusion on the handle . IMO the right thing to do is send Joe the knife so it can be put to rest .
We are not talking about a $50 or $100 purchase . Not doing that at this point is to misrepresent what it actually is , and "trick" a buyer .
My other concern is the deep grinding on top edge that goes into the Randall stamp . I doubt that was shop done .

I am going to end the eBay sale and try to get a refund for the knife by referring the Seller to these forum pages, and my auction page. In the meantime if anyone buys the knife I will forthwith return their money and refer them to this forum. If the person from whom I bought the knife does not refund the money to me, I will then disclose the name of the Seller on this forum. With best regards, Dan F.

I have some of the history on this knife because I owned it briefly at one time.
This knife came out of the collection of Willie Stevens (deceased) out of Louisiana, and was a close friend of former Randall Dealer Bob Sinclair, (long retired)
The knife is a WWII (43/44) Hunter model, which is the predecessor to the Model 3, which was produced after WWII. The blade is the original grind, but has been heavily buffed or polished out, as has the original bronze cut down fighter hilt, which is also original to the knife. Five wide spacers are indicative to a leather handle application, which this probably was back then. The stag handle appears to have been added/replaced at some distant time in the past.
I believe the seller on eBay may be wishful thinking to sell it for that amount, (considering how much less he purchased it for) but that is his prerogative to ask however much he would like.
Hope this helps!

Yes, Bill, you owned it and sold it to me. You did not disclose anything to me about Willie Stevens. You never told me the knife was buffed out and that a fake patina was "juiced" onto the knife. Everyone says the blade is not the original grind and everyone has doubts about the hilt as well. You never told me that the knife was once a leather handle. If you disclosed that it was re-handled I would have never bought it from you because after 20 years on eBay I would not have wanted to bother with this knife. The omission of material facts about a knife does not constitute a proper description.

It was not my responsibility to disclose who I purchased the collection from. And it was you who buffed out the knife, as stated in the auction. I really don't care what anybody on here says about the blade grind, because that is most definitely the correct grind for the knife, and I don't care what anybody on here says about the hilt, because that is correct also. Like somebody else said, let Joe see it. I never thought about the handle until the discussion here, and that is my educated guess on it. You were misleading in your description about it being a mint, unused knife in your description on Ebay, which the buffed pictures clearly show is not the case. Buffing old knives ruins them, not making them pretty.

Miles, your knives are already posted at double so I really don't think that will happen.....
Plus, you are quite possibly the least knowledgeable person on this site, so your opinions do not weigh in to balance your "Bullshit"
Keep your bullshit Pal.

Daniel Feldstein <feldstein.daniel@gmail.com> Today at 11:30 PM To 'Tattoo Bill'
Message body Bill, I’m screwed. I am trying to login and I can’t. I will try later, but I think they blocked me. I agree with you and I apologize for everything. I did take off the patina. And the knife looks great. It does not look buffed. The photos are overexposed. The guys on the forum freaked me out, and convinced me you were the culprit. So sorry, I will keep trying. I know it’s late where you are but I would like to call you. Dan

This is classic. The guy about to get kicked under the bus tries to kick the victim under the bus instead. I rest my case, you're a total POS. Your California liberal ass means nothing to me, Douchebag.
