Description/Historical Notes:
-Model: A.G. Russell Special
-Hunter/Skinner Knife
-Blade: 4, 4.5 or 5 inch lengths of 01 Swedish tool steel, .25 inch stock, in a modified drop point profile with a prominent spine swoop or hump about 2/3 of the way from hilt to tip. Thumb notches. Individual knife number etched to spine (between notches and swoop).
-Handle: Various materials: Sambar stag #1,4,5); leather (#2); Desert Ironwood (#6,7); Maple burl (#3); Ivorite (#8,9). Single hilt in brass or nickel silver. Various spacer configurations. Various butt configurations: compass (#1,4); butt cap (#2,3); butt plate (#5,6,7,8).
-Sheath: Randall (Sullivan’s) brown or black leather sheath. Reverse stamped with RMK logo and A.G. Russell in an arc above the RMK logo and Special in an arc below the RMK logo. Version #1 has AGRS stamped above logo on sheaths for the first 80 knives.
-Notes:
-Description from A.G. Russell website: Back in the 1990s, I designed a hunting knife for Randall to make just for A. G. Russell customers. We made the knife with a 4 inch blade, a 4.5 inch blade and a 5 inch blade. Most that we had made were with stag handles. We also produced a few with Maple Burl, Leather, and Desert Ironwood. In 2012, Randall made one hundred with a 4.5 inch blade of O-1 and a plain Ivorite handle. I really like the look of a finger grooved handle, and Randall does those so well. We have asked them to make a limited number with a 4.5 inch O-1 blade at 56-57 Rc with a finger grooved Ivorite handle. Ivorite is Randall's proprietary off-white phenolic handle material.
-The AG dealer special is the knife that has a blade design similar to the model 11 with a longer swoop (for lack of a better word) on the back side of the blade than you would see on catalog model 11's. They were made with various handle material, and blade lengths, as stated in the info Jesse posted above. The most recent were the ironwood handles with 5 inch and then 4 1/2 inch blade lengths. (Dale; posting on KTF)
-The AGRS has been released in three different blade lengths (4, 4.5 and 5 inch) and with a variety of handle materials. As of July, 2007, the 4 inch and 5 inch versions were no longer produced and only the 4.5 inch knife was available. Production numbers and availability dates for 4 and 5 inch knives listed below as per Jesse Egnew posting on KTF. Total production numbers (as per KTF): 4 inch blades (910); 5 inch blades (324); 4.5 inch blades (360+ as of 2018).
-AGRS Versions #1-8 were all numbered by A.G. Russell (not Randall); version #9 is the first that was not numbered. The numbers on versions #1-8 are etched on spine between thumb notches and blade swoop. As per Scott of RMK, AGR never requested that RMK etch the knives with the number.

Thanks,

Bob
