model 18 sheath on the left, Astro sheath on the right.

Is it me, or do the rivets on the 18 sheath look wrong? I have this in on consignment, my first thought was that this was not born a riveted sheath and that someone riveted it later to make it look older. (photos 1 through 4)

Second question:

Model 17 in on consignment: my first reaction was to think that this knife / sheath could not "date" one another, and that the sheath is older than the knife. (photo 5) Based on stamp, thick guard, squared off butt, etc... please share your opinions.

Unless, of course... you're going to call my knife ugly. (ahem... Stanaback!) Ha!

The 18 is not right. Riveted sheaths are not backstitched at the throat. Agreed on the Astro..... newer.

I also agree with you on the 17.it appears to be a much later knife than the riveted sheath era.

riveted sheaths up until 1972 which is when I think the inclusive S stamp started being used. Does anyone know when the round butts were phased out on the 17 and the more square butt ends went in to production?

Inclusive stamp was 68-69.

Stamp arrived in the shop in 1969.

Separate "S" stamped blades were still being used out of forged stock into the mid 70's on some models.
