Here's a Jim Behring rehandle of a Marbles No 9 hatchet that would classify as a rare bird. Jim did an outstanding job on this rehandle including a Scagel style leather and double pinned crown stag handle. Jack Mosher leather finishes this off. This is a pretty hefty and big hatchet, cool piece.

For 20+ years, I used my Marbles No.9 hatchet on elk, deer and bear. I retired it when it became so valuable, but I still have it. That is the real bomb, Warren, and if you did ever use it, you wouldn't be disappointed.

Steve and Pap,

Thanks for the comments. From what I can research of Marbles 9 Hatchets, all were wood shafts. I don't know enough about these oldies to judge, but I can tell you this is a serious chopping tool. Jim made a great tool even better.
I always trust your judgement Pap and appreciate your support.

Yes, wood shafts/handles and a unique configuration into the head. I was always afraid of breaking the handle, since no way to find a replacement back then. Now, Marbles is making a similar hatchet. I bought 3 for my grandsons and they have broken all 3 handles.

Pap,

By looking at this hatchet it's not evident that a steel shaft was substituted, I'll need to ask Jim. Whatever the case, it's an awesome piece. Hope to have more soon.

Show a top view of the head. If it has a triple indent, then it had the same typical wooden handle configuration. It would be interesting to see how he filled it in.

Pap,

I'm away until Thursday night. All surfaces are smooth. That handle looks like it was originally forged with the head. Fantastic work.

Thanks Guru. Sources tell me this was made a few years before Jr. started working with Sr. It's an old stamp.
