Must an interesting experience to see these animals in your back yard.

Nothing like the sound of a bugling Elk. They can put on some show during their rut; those antlers thrashing a small tree is something to see. They stomp back and forth to scare away amorous younger bulls from their harem.

So rather than start a new thread, let's ask what knife you're taking this year? I'll most likely take the regulars; RMK 11-3 and my RMK 14 but I'm tempted to get first blood on a RMK 11-5 re-handled by the gang at Behring Made Knives.

This year I only drew out on a late black powder buck hunt, although I could have hunted elk in an adjacent unit, just didn't have the time or help. So, for deer, I'm thinking I'll use my Model 7-4 with a#6 grind. I also am looking at my "go to" Model 5-5. It's a tough choice.

Peter is right. The marinade in Italian dressing really is good. Hot grill and sear with the middle rare and rest for 5 minutes, if you can wait that long.

Thanks guys - I've done the Italian dressing before and it is indeed good. I usually marinade my bucks, especially those taken during the rut or I'll put them in the crock pot for seven or eight hours with a can of Golden Mushroom soup (no water)and a chopped up onion - can't beat it. I grind a lot for chili and brats also. Does usually get wrapped in some bacon and go straight to the grill. She was pretty tasty...

Three does a day is the limit here in my part of TN, two bucks for the season -we eat a lot of venison in my house. Usually try to put up four to last us the year and donate a couple thru TWRA to some of the local food programs.

I understand that the key to properly cook venison is to not cook it too long or hot due to the fact that the meat is so lean?

Speaking of food kitchens,two years ago,on the way back from a quail hunt,I stopped at my late daughter's place and the local soup kitchen came and picked up the 60 quail I harvested.

That evening,the homeless Vets had a quail dinner!!!

Well it is getting to be that time of year-cool mornings; leaves changing into their Fall colors; sharpened the knife and broadheads; reloaded the ammo (only need one! LOL); bags are packed; shooting/tuning the bow and same for the rifles!

Great time to be alive and looking forward to spending many hours in the treestands.

I spent a few hours rebuilding my ground blind this past weekend due to winter damage. I'm ready to go. Camera's and scent drippers are in place. Looking forward to spending some quality time in the woods.

Last year I purchased several $59 camera's from Field and Stream. Security boxes however can be pricey. Went to Lowes and found an electrical junction box for $8, removed the guts, and cut a hole in the front cover. Some camo duct tape finished it off. Add a lock and you have a $12 security box.
I used a few blocks of Styrofoam to fill in and secure the camera. Work's like a charm.

You look like you are all set; Happy Hunting! Great set-up on the cameras. Guys are putting in the Moultrie Sat-Cam's and their phones are buzzing everytime a deer or coyote pass by.

Sorry couldn't stop by to see you on the way to the Finger Lakes; that work thing got in the way and had to go to the City before I went up.

It was in the low 80's with 13-20 mph winds, deer hardly moved.

Next stop ADK for the rifle hunt.

Good looking blind and camera setup Warren. I've gotten in the habit of putting my trail cams 8-10' up in the trees angled downward - many people are like animals and seldom look up. I carry a couple of strap on tree steps in my pack so I can get access to them. Especially good for non blackout cams as it doesn't seem to spook deer at all. Also gives you a look at the head when their rumps are towards the camera. Less sunrise/sunset washout too. Good luck this season.

Interesting ideas for cams. I've got mine located on 2 doe runs. First is parallel and close to the creek I cross to my blind and about 70 yds away.
Second is a quartering run off a ridge. I'm in the middle of a big triangle. It took a few years to figure out where to place the cameras. Last year I had some really nice bucks and my friend got one I on the cam.
Like anything you do, time and effort pay off.
Way too warm this fall so far, nothing is moving. We could use a cold snap and sooner than later. Thank you for your reply.
BTW here's one of my favorites from last year. He's in the mock scrape, dripper overhead.

Thanks Michael! I am a better hunter than photographer. It was 1st elk only draw. It was warm, but nice and cool until afternoon. It’s my favorite time since fishing is awesome. I was there 4 years ago and was greeted to 12 inches new snow!

About now many of you are in countdown to the east rifle big game season opener. Here in the Southern Zone of NYS, we are 2 weeks out; 11/18. Neighboring PA just 30 miles away 11/27.
Hoping for a good season even though warm temps have changed fall a bit here "but" you never know.
I'll know peak rut by the dead one's on the road. So far not yet. Full moon was this weekend, Don't have a clue yet. How bout you?

My late season whitetail buck black powder season starts 11/10-11/30. Saw a nice 6 point , eastern count, 2days ago. I have my Tink's 69 wating in the wings.

Check out this set of horns on this bull elk. I'll have to wait until next year to see if he appears with the same looking set. Can't tell if he hurt them during velvet or had a permanent injury as a calf. He's probably a 3 year old.

There has to be wolves in your area. They are in mine.
The Eastern Coyotes are much larger here because I think they are being cross bred with wolves and possibly large dogs.

And yes,mountain lions/cougars are in there area as well.

I am quite sure that they are around. I had one stalk parallel to me a few years ago while hunting. And it was not someone's large German Sheppard. I checked the tracks later and it was,indeed,a wolf.

Recently we have had clear videos of cougars in parking areas and on streets.

Of course,my state says they are not here.

Learned a lesson years ago walking to my ground blind. Had just arrived, still dark, and at least 4 Coyotes heard me and circled my blind; all I could make out was shadows. I never go into the woods without a sidearm and now with my Bond Arms .410. Thankfully they left but I was ready for them.

Mock scrape, dripper over his head. Tough to see in the dark. Been using the same dripper for years in the same spot. I just leave it there all year.

Those drippers are awesome. Our rut is full speed right now, and gun season starts Saturday. I’m hunting horns since freezer full of Elk, so I may not shoot one, but love to get out.

Walking around in the brush in north central Ontario, we found piles of that stuff that indicated the bears were "going" in the same places time after time.

Maybe if you leave that stuff there and just stake it out your bear will return to the scene?

Pouring rain here and gonna blow tomorrow 20-30 with gusts 40. Not good.

I had an easy 50 yard broadside shot at a nice 6 point (eastern count) and had a missfire on my black powder. I took it apart thinking the nipple might be clogged. When I took off the breech plug, one of the 2 Pyrodex pellets was turned into powder and the other one a as intact. I can only assume the pellets are old and not as apt to fire. I used loose 777 powder on the reload. Those pellets are probably 10 years old. Anyone else had a similar experience?

Was in the ADK Mts. and the winds were blowing minimum 12-13 with gusts 25-35mph. Wanna shut down deer? Winds like that! Food was good and bourbon & wine was flowing! A lot of embellished story telling. Great fun, nothing like deer camp!

Agreed Tom. Not much happening here. First Rut is over, 2nd 7-10 days from now in line with the PA opener as we are so close. One of my guys missed a huge buck on opening day near dusk. Warm day today , put up Christmas decos not to freeze my azz off. Heard 1 shot at the house so not much is moving.

Probably taken in DuBois, PA. I hunted there with a friend in the 80's. Elk are numerous there, tags are not. Lumber, coal strip minining, powder metal manufacturing are local industries. Hunted the PA whitetail opener and literally saw dozens of deer the first day plus a few elk. It was wilderness where we were and rugged terrain.

150 yds, .243 100 grain Winchester. He was on a slow trot. Did not even see him topple. He was down by the time I got the scope back on him.

Where I got him, at a friends place, a coyote took a chicken out the yard, 15 yards from the house few days ago. Coyotes have killed a cow in the same area in the past two weeks. Should be a good winter for the .243.

Coyotes are the prevalent predator in rural Ohio. I know people who have given up keeping sheep, goats, and cows because the coyotes kill them (calves in the case of cows).

I also see a direct correlation between the increase in coyotes and the decline of the ruffed grouse since the early 1990's. Although there are also other factors affecting the grouse population, wildlife officials still want to blame land use patterns alone for the decline in grouse.

There is no incentive for people to hunt coyotes--that is, no bounty, no profit from pelts, and apparently few people who want to hunt them just for sport.

And in this crazy state of NY believe it or not, Coyotes may be hunted day or night Oct 1- Mar 25, no bag limit. Spotlights, night vision,and laser devices are permitted for fubearer hunting and may be attached to the firearm.
Also says, hunters should consult with local officials for laws that prohibit the discharge of firearms at night. WHAT?

Every year I read the NYS Hunting regulations book issued at the license agency. It must have been written by a 5th grader. It's the most bizzare and vague piece of crap. Legal to do "this", "except". Read between the lines and interpret instead of clear and concise language. I believe it's intentional to be open ended on the side of the DEC in cases of violations.

Kansas prohibits hunting at night, no matter if you're clearing out a nuisance.

I'm considering getting a caller for Coyote and maybe Crow. Went Crow shooting years ago. Had a decoy owl on a post and it didn't take long before the crows came to the call.

Warren, About 3 years ago this Jan. we had a pack of Coyotes take down a full grown Mare in the middle of the day. Unfortunately, they ganged up on this mare and drug her down from the back. The horse, although killed on a local farm....belonged to our Lapeer County Sheriffs Mounted Unit. Wily's mating season starts here in MI in mid-Jan. Wily is much more aggressive during this time period. We can Night hunt here in MI for Wily but with restrictions.

Some local Farmers have gotten burros, because of the loud noises they make and their willingness to defend themselves and other animals against coyotes.

A side note...

The mention of burros going after coyotes reminds me of a horseback elk hunt.

The guides were sitting around talking, and one mentioned that he had to be careful not to let his dog get near the horses.

Seems one of the horses had a reputation for hating dogs, and would stomp them if they came near him.

So, eastern Ohio farmers should put burros in with their cattle, sheep, etc.

My mother kept a llama with her (Morgan) horses as additional defense against wild dogs/coyotes.

Easier to deal with than a mule.

My friend who hunted the NJ opener yesterday sent me this pic of a bruiser still in velvet, one antler broken. They were out looking for the broken antler this morning. Deer was estimated to weigh 250#.

Thanks fellas....and Awright Pappy I will try to keep the story short BUT, as y'all know, that's awfully tough to do with any hunt'n, fish'n or using a knife(Randall) story. Perhaps we need another thread like...."Long Winded Fish'n, Hunt'n, Knif'n Stories."
My hunting education began with still-hunting skills.....learning to walk as silently as possible, about 15-40 steps, melt into a tree, listen & look...repeat. The days always begin sitting in pitch dark until 30-45 mins. past grey and end similarly....in reverse....always entering & leaving in darkness. It's worked well for my enjoyment in the forests. Never knew it'd absolutely be that way at this age, can't stand to sit or stand long but slow walking's great....& I'm thankful.
First started handgun hunting in '95, TC's, a Ruger 44, & a S&W 629 (love that gun). This is my first time with my new Glock 10mm. Both it & the Smith wear red-dots so that I KNOW anything the dots on out to 100 yd. is going down hard....& my preference is inside 60-75.
Saw nothing at dawn except crows & started walking when they started gathering.I'd walked over 5 spread out, very fresh (pawed & wet) scrapes, watched 7 does & one 6" spike during the day without spooking any. Circled downwind & back to where I could sit on my rubber lawnmower inner tube (ahhhh), back against a loaded white oak, 50 mins. before dark, between the two freshest scrapes; daypack with sweatshirt & "stuff" (all soft & quiet) across my knees for a soft/solid pistol rest.....all comfortable, and.......Nodded dead out. Woke with a start 4 mins. later to watch a larger (body & rack; HUGE) buck than I nailed eating acorns between 100-125 yds. out....in woods & brush. Grunted him, noticed & could care less & slowly fed further & further away. I'm so glad I still feel my heart & adrenaline go up.
Sleepy no more, 15 min. until dark, pretty sure I was done, spotted through a greenbrier thicket this moving pile of brush on my buck's head. No possible shot & feeding around....getting darker....decided to grunt. His head popped up, looked directly my way & started walking steady at me.....kept straight on until 50 yds. out, head-on. Had held green-dot on him ever since first sighting....whistled....he turned broadside, faster walking, whistled again, he froze, perfect heartshot & dropped, kicked, down. I stepped off 43 steps to see shot through buck. The 10mm (180 gr. Nosler JHP;9.7gr. Blue dot) performed great with zero steps, quickly downed deer. The two knives used in the woods also did great (as usual); grandpa's Treebrand stockman for the privates & glands & the Perry Miller supplied #8-Old Style to open him up & roll out the innards.
Thank God for the two strong young bucks with 4wheelers only a phone call away who both say they "owe me forever."

In the span of seconds, the coyote had the terrier pinned down near a wooden fence bordering the Dinges' backyard.

While individual coyotes may sometimes kill or injure domestic pets, young livestock, or poultry, these incidents are typically preventable by removing resources that might attract coyotes.

Northfield police Chief William Lustig warns Illinois residents to never leave pet or human food in containers outside, to always store trash in tightly sealed containers, and to refrain from feeding birds, as the feed can attract other wildlife that coyotes prey upon.

"Some coyotes become accustomed to human activity and may approach close to buildings, people, or pets," the Illinois Department of Natural Resources site adds.

"Cats and small dogs should be observed closely and placed in fenced areas (yards, kennels) when coyotes are known to be present."
As Vicky Dinges ran out of the house, apparently screaming, the coyote took off in the opposite direction and Boozer jumped up right away, running back to his home.

Last February,a total of six folks were attacked by coyotes while walking their dogs. Three dogs died,three were injured.

A friend's dog was killed in his front yard when it went out for his morning outing by three 'yotes. The next week a deer came crashing through his neighbor's sliding glass door with three 'yotes in pursuit.

Three women were attacked by a rabid bobcat.

The state DEEP says that we don't have a coyote problem.......

A friend of mine harvested over 60 coyotes nearby last year,most weighing more than 60 lbs!!!

Nope,no coyote problem.

Same folks that said there were no cougars in the state,then one got killed by a car. The state did a DNA on it and said that it came from S.Dakota,probably visiting for the week end no doubt!!!!

Same here in northern Michigan. DNR for years said that cougar sightings were misidentified house cats or bobcats. The proof was a picture of one down by Lansing. Used to know a lady years about 15 years ago that worked for the DNR. Her and her husband were vacationing in the upper peninsula and they seen a cougar crossing the road. Went to the nearest field office to report it. She was told that she had seen a bobcat. She not so politely told the officer there that she was a DNR officer out of roscommon and she knew what the hell a bobcat was and this was much larger. Guess the only way to really prove it is with a carcass, but probably get in some kind of trouble,killing an endangered species, at least in Michigan.

Yep,it seems that the Gov't agencies are in total denial about anything especially when they were proven wrong.

A couple of months ago a woman in a neighboring community took a clear video of a cougar walking around a parking lot. It was not a fuzzy image and the size could be compared to the cars it walked by.

When it was shown to the State Conservation folks,they had "no comment"

When ever I see a poster on a phone pole or in the super market bulleting board posting about a missing Fluffy or Fido,I know that it is sure sign of coyote activity.

A quick look at the tracks in a recent snow fall will give you some idea of what is going on out there.

Good eye Bob! Being I had a brand new Polaris "ACE" 570 and a brand new aluminum trailer...you "KNOW" there was stuff had, what, needed buyin'..!!! I picked up the ACE right up the street at Wards Yamaha. I've dealt exclusively with Audie Ward for many decades (I think we figured out over 30 years) and always get a fair deal.
Audie and I used to race in the dirt. He was motocross (#5 in the nation, riding for Yamaha) and I was Hare scrambles and enduros (#5 in Florida, for a short time...in the seniors open class). Wards Yamaha carries them "all"! Don't let the name fool ya'...Wards is an authorized dealer for, not only Yamaha & Polaris, but also: Kawasaki & Honda!

Single seater? Used to be called a UTV side by side. Hummm, looks more like an ATV with a roll cage cab. So many buggies out there I guess. Nice though, good luck.

I drove the ACE 325 and liked it a lot. You can see so much more, especially when "scouting" than can be seen out of a 2-seater. This new model is a 570cc and it flies. At 45 H.P. it'll top out @ 62 M.P.H.
News flash: They (Polaris) now offer a 900cc in this little guy! (Can't imagine). Mine is also what Polaris calls a "SP" edition, which is a fancy way of saying the suspension is beefed up (longer travel and more ground clearance) and it has power steering, an option I never thought was needed. I was wrong!
Abigail and I are headed up to hunt in 2 days and we are picking up another Polaris. This one is a Ranger "EV" model. Side-by-side- Mid size- Electric! This one's for more serious stealth and, of course, carries 2 riders. I'll keep ya'll posted on the outcome!
