Hello everyone! I am new to the Randall knife forums and am enjoying reading all of your posts! As I am new one question has been in my mind for some time now. Are Randall Knives really up to the task of every day carry (edc)? I have owned 5 of Randall's knives for some time now ( 2 of the Randall model 1-5, 2 of the model 11-4 and 1 model 5-4) and I love them all! I have carried the 11-4's and 5-4 on several excursions and they held up pretty good but I notice the blade dulled rather quickly compared top some of the "brand name" knives & steels that you can buy on the market. All of my Randall's are the carbon tool steel as compared to some of the store brands that I have such as Benchmade & Buck that have S30V, 20CV & Damascus. I appreciate everyone's feedback so that I pick the right tool for the right job!

Sounds like you would like the GTR with a neck sheath. Very nice. Pap

Welcome to the forum.....I have found the Minis to be excellent EDCs. Specifically the #27M Copper. Small for carry, yet very stout and durable for most duties.. Enjoy the search!

Check out a #3 - 5", I read where that was Bo Randalls carry knife. Also, try a Stainless Steel blade.

You are not comparing apples with apples, Randalls O1 tool steel is great stuff but the Rockwell hardness tends to be in the mid 50's from what I understand, this makes it easy to field sharpen but will also dull fairly quickly, although a quick strop should get it back to sharp very quickly, the other steels you mention tend to be a higher Rockwell, so the edge will last longer, but take more effort to resharpen when needed. Randall stainless models tend to be in the mid to high 50's, so should take an edge and hold it longer, might be a better comparison for you, try a model 10, usually 154 cm steel, makes a good edc.

Best to hold one, also a good idea to make a list of day to day uses you will have for your EDC. I use mine for a lot of point prying which makes my 19 a great choice as the tip has a lot of what I call "tip thickness" hasn't broken off yet.

Thank you both for your response! I have had my first 11-4 since I was 16 which makes it 19 years old. I also started as a volunteer firefighter that same year and I have using that same 11-4 since for firefighting, as well as camping, opening boxes, cutting rope and other every day needs. Kind of extensive for this blade but it has held up very well! Just got my knife & new sheath back from Randall last week actually. Shelley you are right about needing to sharpen the 01 blade a lot as with all of this work it does dull fast.

My EDC is a triathelete; stout blade, strong right to the tip.

Chief,
Yes black palm from the Captain; Musk Ox from Duke. The Tri is a legal carry in New York.

Chief,
The biggest issues are for automatics and top & bottom edges sharpened; anything less than 4" is legit.
Like Tony said, it gives them more interest to look for more if you are not legal.
