My local Bowie customer has about 100 "Bears" in his collection of 450 Randalls. The latest of them were shown in the "From The Lush Green Forest…" thread located on the Picture Gallery's page 2.

I would have to move the gun cabinet containing a couple dozen like-new Griffin & Howe rifles, two of which are "1 of 4", to access the rest of the collection that remains, so far, "untouchable". Then, there are the 300+ Winchester Model 42 shotguns to contend with. I'm still trying to get to the 400+ Daniel WInkler buckskinning Knives that are "kinda" in the way.

He came to Blade this year, and after introducing him to Gary Clinton & Wayne Buxton, he spent $15,000 between them.

I would like to get in there to photograph the Brass-back Randall Bowies in the collection. I told him he needs to publish a coffee table book on the collection.

I wish money was no object with me

Anyone know what happened to David Lee's collection of Bear Bowies that he would show at the Blade Shows?
That was a great collection that Rick Ward and David Lee worked on for years.
I regret I did not take pictures of his display. Maybe someone here did.

I am putting a short (very short) story together for "KNIFE KNEWS" about this knife. Won't let any cats out of the bag just yet...but I owned it "twice"! I'm keeping it, this time!

I notice the back of the sheath is stamped 12 7 where the standard Bear is 12 8, so is the Bear smaller or the sheath mis-stamped? Curious minds want to know

It's #12-7". I had Greg make the custom sheath, out of some Ostrich hide of mine he had down at his shop. Originally, no sheath was provided. My late friend, Dave Griffin, had placed this knife in my "drawer" for me, prior to me becoming a dealer. Of course, becoming an authorized dealer nixes any cool, one-offs, Randalls being held in a drawer for me....(Rats!) I'm not complaining...just takin' a trip down memory lane!
Best, Capt. Chris

How'd you manage to get a CDT Model, like a #12-6", LB, from a slotted block? There isn't enough there...there??

I was thinking the Old KABAR sheath with the mountain man fighting the Bear with his knife: hand tooled on a "C" sheath in black.

Thanks everyone.Box Elder from the Captains stash.Model B black no hone sheath.Original handle material was Blue spruce pine cone but all of that was rejected by the shop.Asked Capt to do his magic and this is what I got.Very, very happy with the results.
They being James and the Captain sent me a pic last Thursday with my knife standing upright in a piece of cake,2nd picture it was laying in the cake.Use your imagination as to how it looked.

A nickel-silver hilt & butt cap mounted on a Bear Bowie with green micarta handle.
Aluminum & Black spacers complement the "package".

Ron,

This from the 12 Knife of the week thread. A quote from Gaddis.

.The first order for this knife [Bear Bowie] was recorded in the journal on 6 February 1964, with nine more orders following during the next six months. This is quite impressive for one of the most expensive Randall models, especially when it wasn't even listed in the current catalog! These orders... appear to have been the direct result of one magazine article.... in the February 1964 issue of ArgosyMagazine....

So was this one of the first from eearliest vintage?

It may be Warren, but there is no way to know for sure. The sheath certainly looks like an early Johnson, but in 1964 it should have baby dots.

Best,

My new Bear Bowie #12-8" with Ironwood handle. It's not just the bad lighting, one side of the Ironwood is very dark, and the other side is lighter. I'll try to get get better pictures later.

Agreed Buck. You don't necessarily need overcast skies, just east side afternoon shadows and white reflective material for fill-in.

Great looking trio, Warren. I have taken quite a liking to the musk ox scales but have been trying to figure out how that look is achieved - ran across this photo that cleared it up for me. Just in case anyone else out there knew as little about them as me..

Boomer your 1st best destiny on ox is to get in contact with Duke.
He cures them then shapes them in a cylinder & then sends them to be to be stabilized.
This way you can get a uniform color without the white if you want.
I.E. like buying center cut ivory back in the day.
Just a little FYI fact.

Once, there were three bears.......................

The desert ironwood coming out of the Shop is very respectable, and has been.

The middle "Bear", SS, brass & black spacers, ironwood, brass butt cap, wrist thong,

is flanked by a pair of matching "Bears", SS, scalloped collar, ironwood, scalloped "Coolie" butt cap.

It's more brownish in color, at first I thought it may be old yellow micarta, but it doesn't seem yellow enough, not sure about the variation in color in the old micarta. Just not sure what it is, any ideas ?

Cool LBB Billy.
How many of the Capt. knives did you look at before you grabbed that one?

I handed it to Billy and said....here let’s see you get it in the sheath. 2 seconds later it was in. Then I tried it and it wouldn’t fit. The para chord knots were getting in the way and with my sorry eye site I could not see that.

How nice...Ronnie bashes RMK "&" Sullivans, doesn't apologize "after" everything he was told was proven true and everything he stated was proven false, and we just move on. An open apology, in the forum build, would be appropriate..."THEN"...we could move on.
Just my thoughts, Capt. Chris

"Sorry Ronnie, but it fit when it left the shop...bend the back of the sheath away from the blade some and see if that helps..."

"there is no way this left this bad of a fit...just no way...must be other semantics some where"

"Scott there are pictures showing the knife in both ways. (I know the correct way to stick a Randall in it’s sheath.) I posted all the photos to show that It wouldn’t fit."

"The sheath sucks and anything they send me to replace it will suck."

I'm with Cap on this one, I called BS and was called out on it.

Scott I made a mistake......a big mistake. I COULD NOT SEE the parachord knots blocking the guard.....even when I bent the sheath. Am I embarrassed about my mistake.....of course. Does that make me like the current Sheaths supplied with Randall Made Knive any better.....no. The quality, to me just isn’t there. Remember I had another knife that didn’t fit in the sheath. I did send that one back and a replacement sheath was made for me. Why didn’t that one fit? I don’t know.....it had no parachord on it. That’s all beside the point. That isn’t gonna change and I guess I should just get over that because that apparently isn’t important to Gary.
I made a mistake. I am sorry for causing a stir. That’s it.

If not, it's GTR's fault, I reckon.

How the hell did you people get that I was saying it’s Gary’s fault.....how did you figure that out Scott! In the immortal words of the fella that sold Gump his boat.....”are you stupid or something”? In the final analysis it doesn’t matter what I think about the Sheaths supplied with Randall Knives. It doesn’t matter what Chris thinks, or even what Rhett thought. It only matters what Gary thinks and he likes them just fine. So bitching isn’t gonna change anything. That is what I was saying.

Thanks to everyone for their opinion..."BUT"...(You knew it was coming) when someone, ignorant enough to bad-mouth the shop, Sullivans & Scott,
& knowingly outright wrong doesn't have enough balls to apologize, I have a hard time "letting it go".
Don't worry Warren. This thread's going nowhere. I'll just have to clean it up afterwards. I "did" ask that the apology be moved to it's original "bad-mouth thread".
Best, Capt. Chris

Alan,
Billy states they think it's AGM. I would agree. The layered look of the material within the finger grips could be the lighting? Billy would have to answer that question. Nice knife !!

Very similar to the walnut tree, a beautiful knife. It was always interesting where is his balance point?

An old one George. You can see just a hint of the nut on the back of the cap. White letters on stone too. It's not that tired.

Will the shop supply Alternative Ivory or do you have to supply it yourself?

That stuff is really nice!

This pair of Bear Bowies arrived Saturday for my local customer, who focuses on Model 12-8's. I think these brings him up to 84 Bears.

These two are sporting nickel-silver "furniture", and David Warther's resin ivory, "S" grade. Impressive handle material.
