That was my favorite knife in the Zebra series. Keep that thought on that sheath. We need to do that again, that was slick.!

Say Chief look familiar? It was your Musk Ox now re-handled on a Randall 25 blade. For a one-off this came out pretty darn good IMO.

Thanks guys!
Thanks Pappy, that 19 is a user, It has a Mudbone pouch sheath that I need to clean up & take pictures of.
I'm usually not a pouch sheath guy but this one that Mudbone did for it fits like socks on a rooster!

Pat,

You may never see another. In fact it was put back together like the shop did it.
One-off 25 rehandled Musk Ox, expertly done IMO. Happy to say mine for ever.

I did just didn't put it in the picture.
Yeah when I gave James & Grant the page turner & James said that will go good on the 27 I really was like ....I don't know?
But fortunately James was like relax I got this you'll see.
And judging by the response from ya'll.....he was correct.
Thanks for all the kind words but, I had to be drug kicking and whining the whole way. Thanks Guys!

It's like this I can't see it in my minds eye!
I have had James redo stuff before, he always chuckles!
One of my favorite James quotes from blade years back, "yeah you were so excited I just didn't know how to say it was not gonna be what you like"!
We are beyond that know, "I'm not doing that"! Or he starts telling me what he sees so I don't waste both of our time! grin

Not a worry Mike! We went north to Seattle on a supply run after the show.

I haven't been to Boise yet myself, but it's a short enough drive from Missoula to justify checking it out sometime soon.

I had James take a leather handled stock 11-5 and make a way cool re-creation. This one has a Musk Ox carver handle and Musk Ox spacer,& full fingergrips. Pretty awesome job and it fits great in the hi-ride sheath. Nicely done James and crew!

coachblalock -- That's a slick looking Chef's knife... I like the brass butt-plate.

Wally -- Killer pair man! I like the differing hilt and handle shapes you chose, nice work! Are those paired with pouch sheaths?

Thanks Jay.

The handle & butt plate really added an extra "heft" to my knife. It feels good!

Those pine cone handles are really nice!!

James & Grant are doing some impressive work.

Sent James and Grant an 80's #4 6 with a badly damaged handle. They kept the RMK Nickel Silver square hilt and added their magic for the rest. I really like all my BMK re-handle knives. Especially this one.

I just sent in a couple of Randalls to see what the Gang can do; I'm sure I'll have some pictures to post one day soon. Until then, my mouth will just have to water on this thread... keep 'em coming!

There's an incredible amount of art detail in that sheath. I'm gonna create a new term "Art Mud Deco". That is really cool.

Just completed by the "Gang", here's a Randall 11-5,copper hilt, Big Horn Sheep spacer, whitetail crown stag handle.
In Grant's words," Alaska never looked so good"; I agree.
So we're discussing leather now, any suggestions?

You might remember the pair of Randalls I picked up some months back; y'all were very helpful with my questions, and now the James Gang has tricked them out. Figuring out leather for the model 2 now.

Thanks. What I like most about this whitetail handle is no bald spot. Mud is definitely getting a chance to scratch some art.
Here's a pic of the knife before and the handle; the white one.

Hey Mark,

Nice rehandle jobs. Your call but Warlander, & Rowe will not disapoint. They both have lots of exotic inlays to offer as well as nice tooling.
If you decide to bump it way up with Mudbone, think of an idea and turn him loose ; fasten your seat belt.

Yeah, they put my last one in Warlander; I'm really happy with it, but I told them to go with a more utilitarian vibe. I'm not big into fancy leatherwork, and the sticker already has a belt sheath; I told them to go with a clip.

I've seen a lot of Mudbone work; incredible stuff.

Wally, nice choice of handle; they've been busy with stickers this week, I guess.

Just completed this morning and in the mail. Pics courtesy of Grant. Here's a Randall 1-7 S with sawteeth rescued from the dead with a broken tang. This is super bad-azz facelift. Black Ceracote blade, copper S hilt and sub-hilt, black micarta center spacer, copper and black thin fiber spacers, and how cool is a pinned Cooper Firearms gray gunstock handle complete with Behring Made medallion? I'm going to marry this one to a black Sullivan's "C" sheath. Something tells me there will be more of these gunstock rehandles done soon.

Are you kidding me? Talk about La La Land!! How great is it that we have 2 great pieces to this puzzle, an unusable or damaged Randall blade, and a group of knife artisans that can make it into something indescribable. Love this thread, it never ceases to amaze me.

Warren, That beauty should fit perfectly in the original sheath.

Pappy, You are so right, I use to not even look at Randall's with damaged handles. After finding the James Gang (through this forum) it has become one of the things I look for most.

My humble apologies, your keeper strap hardware will unite and function as designed. Your handle may stick out past your leather belt loop a little to far however. hehehe

Eric,

Back to the drawing board. My fears were confirmed about the keeper strap, too short. Anyway on to something way cool and appropriate. More to follow.

Tanned beaver tail to me is the ultimate if nothing else because it's all American and tough as hell.

I bought a Randall years ago and always thought it was a walnut handled small 26 pathfinder. Turns out the blade blank was stolen from the shop and finished elsewhere. I had Behring Made Knives re-handle it with fossilized walrus ivory donated by Warren Polidori. Some suggestions from me, and James' skills created this knife.

Larry,

Congrats again on a great project. Looking at that blade reminds me of my rehandled Triathlete with red Pinecone. I just had Mudbone do the magic on a sheath. These blades look quite similar.

Very similar blades, nice usable size. Not every knife needs to be a big bowie.
Thanks again for the very cool ivory!

Earlier in this thread I posted a re-handled Randall 1-7, copper S hilt and sub hilt, black ceracoat finish with a Cooper Firearms gunstock handle. I sent the knife to Mudbone along with a cardboard mock-up of a custom sheath with a pivoting belt loop. Had this idea for a long time and just had to try it. Sitting in a car or a truck with a 7" blade just doesn't work; until now. Mudbone did a fantastic job. Got to give Grant credit for the grey elephant inlay, just makes that handle pop! I wore this rig Friday at Blade, it got a lot of ooohs and ahhhs.

I really like the idea of the swivel, make a lot of sense. Even a high ride isn't as comfortable as a swivel sitting in your rig. I want one.

I have a real old #10-5 that I bought back in 1975, has my etched name and worn out rosewood handle. I am thinking of Behring replacement stag slabs,a finger guard, and Mudbone swivel sheath. Heck of a fishing outfit.

Every once in a while I see a fishing combo rig show up with pliers and a model 10. I'm thinking Greg Gutcher made those up.

Yes, I have one of those rigs, although I doubt that I would ever use it. Brings me to an idea to have the James Gang redo my old #10 and match it with my Abel plyers ( the Randall of all plyers) into a set with a swivel sheath. What do you think?

Warren,

Great re-imagining of the knife (somehow, simply calling it a 're-handle' doesn't do it justice)!

Love the sheath design, the hand-tooling and the elephant inlay.

Does the bolt holding the swivel section to the sheath contact the knife handle when the knife is sheathed?

Any concerns about the bolt abrading the knife handle as the sheath pivots?

Bob

LMAO betting he sent it to James & said what do ya think you can do?
I 'm not sure how I would feel about the double hilt, have never held one.
But that S guard is sexy! Goes good with the handle.

Here is the result of my rehandle on my 1976 Model 10-5 along with a new sheath and cleanup on an older Merle Seguine that did not have a sheath. As it turned out, The James Gang did the rehandle so that it still fit the original Johnson sheath. Therefore, I took Grant's suggestion to leave it alone and use my Abel as is. I am very pleased with the outcome.

I actually have this rehandle Model 10-5 in my hand today, and it's difficult to explain how well it fits, unreal. Not only is the stag over the top, but the comfort feeling is super. BMK also cut the top of the hilt to make the thumb notches usable. If you have an old Model 10, you might consider a new handle from BMK.

Mike,

That is truly a superb looking re-handle.

What looks better on a knife handle than a great piece of stag? And the James Gang certainly seem to get some awesome pieces.

Congrats on a real beauty and a great user!

I liked the 7.5" kit Blade re-handle so much I matched it up with a 5.5" Kit blade. I love the pairing.

So, you guys are buying them like that, and then doing a re handle....I see...never thought about that, just thought they were original, unfinished knife kits from the shop...guess I just hadn't really given it that much thought...

Rocky, All the kit blades I have sent to BMK never had a handle installed, the only RMK knife I did send with a handle was not a kit blade, it had a CW hippo tooth handle that was severely damaged.

Whoever buys that toothpick is going to want a rehandle for certain. There's a sizable crack on that walrus that the seller isn't showcasing properly.

Not just Kits, sometimes people just know that they have a cool handle material for RMK to put on.
Then they get it & it's not like they thought it would be.
Or it's not stabilized as good as the person who sold it said it was.
It cracks.....the list goes on.
Or like me just wanting copper furniture & a handle material that isn't available on a RMK.

As I was saying a few weeks ago.
Big thanks to Tune for getting me this 19!
This will be a user. No bells & whistles, just added copper & killer stag.
Many thanks to the Badass Bunch at Behring!

Chief ,
Do a custom roadrunner keeper pin sheath like you did once before. Horizontal or vertical. Show the pics, for a better carry.

Fellas fellas fellas!

I've got a project that just came to fruition and I have to say that I cannot be happier with the collaboration of ideas between myself and a newer gentleman to me, Rory Smith. We completed the first of these and immediately it only felt right that we do three TRIathletes, swapping only the brass or copper or nickel silver/aluminum trim for a unique matched up set. Like I said... could NOT be happier!

For leather, a pouch sheath no loop would fill the bill for a back pocket or day pack companion. I had Mudbone make this one for my red pinecone rehandled tri.

This one didn't last long on the website. We've seen some recent re-handle Triathlete blades with sub-hilts. This one is exceptional as were the others. Sheath to follow from Amy at Warlander. Can't wait for this one.

Definitely a keeper. I had a Tri redone with stag, WT, and compass, but not like that one. I gave mine to a great friend that lives in Sandpoint, Idaho. He has used it on 2 bears so far.

Here's a before and after of a 12-8 Big Bear that had a cracked white lineal micarta handle. Rehandled with an artifact FWI sled runner; RMK hilt and smooth collar.
Well a big thank you to Amy too; she just killed this one. Antique leather with python inlay, just awesome Amy!
Thanks guys another really great project!

Little clarification on the sheath.I spoke with Amy today. Leather is air brushed which gives either a fade-in or fade-out look. She has only done a half dozen up till now. I told her that would change quickly.

Awesome vintage Behring rehandled blade. I'll let the letter do the talking.
Bout as good as it gets.

Thanks Tony. I reached out to James about this knife and he remembered it well. Since that time he estimates he's made about 7000 knives.

Here is a project I have just finished. I have had the sheath for years, always looking for a vintage pair to fit..... I finally ordered a 1-7 and a 7-4 and had the Behring Men set it up.

It's a bad ass camp rig. Big knife for chores, small knife for game.

Hey now; great looking pair. Very good choice of spacers & stacked leather. That is the way to use a vintage piggyback sheath. That must have been one of the earliest ones?

Great idea & workmanship by BMK.

Latest for me from BMK, out for leather.
Since I can't find a ivory one or get it made anymore.
I went the long way around.....but I got there!

First time I did a "S" guard on a BMK you were hooked. One of a handful of the best of the best ever.
What was the original handle and blade number?

Beautiful knife David. Love the handful of ivory, and the thick silver buttcap. It will be hard to top this one if you get it engraved. Hope it all comes together for you. A+

Big shout outs to Tune for finding me the knife & Gary Clinton for the ivory! Thanks guys.
And as always BMK brings it together!
Tom on the sheath I went to Warlander this time as I wanted to do an exotic snake skin sheath.
Similar to the old days when this could be made at Randall & Gutchers.
Thanks for kind words all!

Dang Warren, you have been getting some REALLY nice stuff lately!

Well thought out. Well designed. And very well done!

I remember being very impressed when you posted a picture of all of your Behring stuff a couple of years ago. Now, I bet it’s really something!

Coach,

Well thank you but that wouldn't be in the best interest of the thread. Those knives were all custom made not rehandled.
Perhaps somewhere down the road another family photo....

When I saw the feathers figured you'd like that. But yeah, who does this relief carving right? Last few projects have incorporated similar themes by his own admission. Building a story.

The detail on the handle is outstanding. I don’t recall seeing anything as detailed as that.
That is a knife that must be displayed, IMO.

I just now am getting un-packed from the Marathon that is: TULSA! I hope you folks will enjoy a splendid example of a WWII rendition of a brand new RMK Model #4-6"! BMK outdid themselves with this package...to include: Blued steel blade, along with bluing the custom steel hilt and crows beak butt cap...& the leather? Well: It speaks for itself!
I did not order custom leather, thinking that the Model A sheath shown here would have been what these old war horses would have come with originally. While some artistic license has been used (and quite well) I think you can appreciate this fine piece. I have just posted it to my website.
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

That is a "swell" treatment (using an old-fashioned term for "neat").

And I especially like the clarity of the RMK trademark.

Those guys in Montana know something about knives! And they can do just about anything from what I have seen.

Sadly to say that is the last project I have for rehandled knives for now.
Cap, the 12-8 Big Bear I had done was the knife you provided last year. Yes it came without a sheath. Was the last of my FWI from my tusk.
Wanted to say thanks again.

That & everything else. In the land of constant humidity the best way to keep a tool steel knife is to use it.

Years ago, One of their top sales managers who worked at their New Orleans location was to be married. Well, she was a great friend of my wife and stood as a Bridesmaid in our wedding.

Her Bridal shower was held at their personal home.... He was a tremendous outdoorsman and his collection certainly was a fine example of how he lived.... and ate! Great memories!

Ralph & Kacoo......was bought by Piccadilly, food is bad now.
They finally closed down the original Don's Seafood this last flood got them.
They have 3-5 spots in LA. now......it's the kids with the original recipes now.
Fleur De Lis Pizza is still going & still awesome.
Tonys seafood is still going strong.

As for slicing pickles, hasn't yet, but boiled 120 lbs. of mudbugs this weekend & it cut up a lot of stuff. Onions, garlic, mushrooms, sausage, chicken, potatoes, corn, green beans.
Butterflied a 150ish big shrimp for some angels on horseback.
That's when you butterfly a 12-15 count shrimp stuff in a oyster & wrap it in bacon batter it then deep fry it.

I still have a Ralph and Kacoos cook book. The Mohawk in Monroe, La had great gumbo too, and the best fried shrimp I've ever had. Casio's in Monroe had a Red Fish Tony that was crispy fried with a butter sauce of crawfish, crab, garlic and green onions. To die for.

I buy BMK for stilettos, daggers, boot knife you can decide how wide, how long, if you want the blade edge to go all the way to the hilt......
I don't have the patience or desire to use a butterfly handle, on OTFs I've carried most brands & unless your going to pay a custom maker the blade just gets loose when it's out, I mean it has a wow factor but it just is to loose after it's open & for use.
For a good pocket knife I like pro-tech, the mechanism is real strong & very solid when open, holds a good edge.

Walker,
Thank you.
The Bear Bowie is desert ironwood with copper hilt & sub-hilt. The large spacer is walrus ivory; the remaining spacers are black micarta and copper.
The 4-6 Fighters have original brass hilts with added brass crow’s beak butt caps and misc. spacer stacks, mostly leather. One of the handles is walrus ivory and the other is musk ox.

A few years ago at BLADE,I purchased from the Capt a super nice Behring pocket/sheath knife and the spacers were in the configuration of my Vietnam Ribbon.

Over time, the spacers have lost their color.

Anyone know how to restore the color, safely??

Wayne--

Maybe the color change is superficial.

Maybe try polishing with Flitz and a small section to see if it brings the color back.

And if that works, apply Ren Wax to protect it from atmospheric exposure--just in case that is the cause of the color change.

If it is due to exposure to light, maybe somebody here has some experience and can confirm it. Often ultraviolet light will cause color change.

Thank you both for the advise.
I had already tried Semichrome and the Rennaisanse wax and it brought it back, somewhat but no where near the way it was when I first had purchased it.

I sent an email to James and will see what he has to say.

That little knife is "just right" and is with me always.

I don't blame BMK on this happening. I have a handful of handle material that was purchased by good customers (some are on this very forum) and it was "represented" as yellow or even the "original" Westinghouse "Old Yeller". I'll shoot a quick pick of one such piece. Be careful who you buy stuff from when it comes to these type of "claims".
Caveat Emptor,
Capt. Chris
PS: This material was sold to Doug54 (I think that is his Forum Name) by KENSTYX from Ebay fame...

I never contacted BMK about the color change. I never thought it was their issue. I had a M7 bayonet done as well by a fellow Michigander, it remains as it did 10 years ago when I had it done. BMK remains my go to for re-handled knives.

Eric,
I hope you didn't think I was accusing you of branding any blame on BMK. I was just saying that "I" don't blame them for the ones they made for "me". The "Blame" should fall on the seller who mis-represents the product.

I will be sending it via FedEx today and hope that they will be able to bring some color back.

Amen Rocky,
I wish I'd have taken a "Before" photo of the brown piece I posted up earlier in this thread. It was more of a yellow like your 1st pick originally.
Thanks, Capt. Chris

IMO the handle still looks great. Can you tell me where/how it was stored and are both sides similar in color now?

Rod,
It was stored in my "gun Locker" no sun, nothing but age....I do not know what it would have done if in the sun/lighted condition....and...yes the "now color" is not objectionable....
BUT...its not "yellow"
both sides are the same

Latest batch of BMK Rehandles

TC Special with a FW Artifact Net Weight handle with blackened steel FCH and Musk Ox spacer.

Rick Bowles Skinner with Dall Sheep Horn the feel of this one is incredible it curves right into your hand.

Have one more on the way with Amy Warlander Elephant inlay sheath.

Great Job Tom! I wondered who got the TC, I love the Dall sheep horn a lot, did a 4-6 fighter with it last year. That Net weight has some killer color!

Thanks Guys

I bought that Net Weight at Blade 4 or 5 years ago to do a re-handle on my leather handled Bowles Skinner. James felt it would overpower the Skinner and said it would look better on the TC. Trust in James! He has some great Dall Sheep handle material.

That Dall Sheep horn is thinner and slightly curved; fits the palm of my hand perfectly.

But if you're looking for a quick project, restoring an old knife is really worthwhile. Rust can be removed, handles can be restored or replaced, and as long as there is life left in the blade, you can have a razor sharp knife that will make chopping and cooking at least 3 times as fun.
