Re: User pics - 08/11/15 10:37 PM

The BP handle on the camp configuration Model 15 appears to be shaped to be more comfortable in a hand with shorter fingers.
Is this correct? It resembles the diameter of a Model 28 handle which I find to be very ergonomic for my size hand.

(Really fine looking knife, BTW!)

Re: User pics - 08/12/15 03:59 PM

You can see the model 15 handle is bigger than a woodsman. It is fuller do to the thickness of the 15. ]

Re: User pics - 08/19/15 03:58 PM

If you don't have time to practice every week than the compound is the way to go. Traditional archery takes a lot of dedication and time. I know I've even used compounds when some years are crazy busy and I can't practice a lot. Also you can't be a horn Hunter lol. If your a meat Hunter and just enjoy the woods time trad is the way to go.

It's so rewarding using a Randall knife. They are true work horses. They are great cutters. I enjoy other makers knives who put such a tough edge angle for strength but they don't cut as good as these do. And after all , a knifes main use is to cut..... ]

I'm waiting on a triathlete so I can edc a Randall. smile can't wait. Should be here in October.
Posted by: Tom Vaught

Re: User pics - 09/07/15 12:44 PM

I used to EDC a Randall Triathlete for several years.
I bought the knife at a Gun & Knife Show locally and with a clean-up on the knife and a touch-up on the blade it worked very well in my vehicle as needs came up. Paracord, heater hose, fixing a broken wire in a harness. A real user.

The the car was stolen with the knife in the glove box so that was the end of that specific EDC knife.

You will like it, it is a work horse. If you want to make it a bit prettier, put some scales on it like others have done on the forum. Mine was original.

No streetside table tennis here. No streetside anything except stumbling drug addicts and alcoholics. Not even bus shelters, only a sign, and the odd person standing in 95°/100% humidity knee high grass waiting.

Actually very close to the truth.
People are full of disappointment from unfulfilled dreams and the inability to change anything.
Disappointment in life. From this often begins drug abuse and alcohol abuse.

If you "travel" around the map Google - viewing the streets, it is clearly visible.

That is a great looking 10-5 Snake!

I have a 10-3 with the red micarta scales that gets a lot of use. I would love to have a 5" and a 7" to complete the set.... grin

I am a new member to this forum, but not new to Randall Made Knives. I have been coming to this forum for quite some time now. I love reading all of the posts and viewing all of the pictures. I have learned so much from this forum and finally decided to join. I thought a good first post would be to show off my main user knife. I have been wanting to upgrade my user knife, but this dang thang just keeps going! Not the prettiest, but very useful for deer, rabbit, squirrel, bass, catfish, camping, hiking, you name it. I will probably only ever upgrade once I've sharpened it so many times that there's nothing left of the blade. Thanks for looking. I plan to make more posts in the future of some of my other Randalls.

Re: User pics - 11/28/17 05:12 PM

I've had that knife for about a year now. Bought it used on Ebay. Didn't come with correct sheath. Came with the JP Knives sheath pictured. I think it was advertised as a 4-4 but looks to me a 7-4.5 that was sharpened down to a 7-4. I've carried it almost everyday since I bought it. It was very dull wgen I got it. It took a very nice edge and holds it well.

Always!

I was taught by an old timer years ago about rattle snake heads being able to bite after being dispatched, so that’s why I only use my knife tips to handle them. I throw them into the thick Cholla cactus we have out here, so nothing can get at them…… grin

Re: User pics - 07/17/18 09:50 AM

With a #5-6 I can chop it down, section it up, split it down, shave out feather sticks and ignite with a ferro rod. It will make almost every bushcraft item. This and a crooked knife will do it all.

Re: User pics - 07/19/18 06:28 PM

Not a full blown user yet as the bugs are out in force but she likes the woods!

Posted by: Leatherman

Re: User pics - 07/21/18 03:25 PM

Full blown user now, splits wood real well. I did more than shown here, probably it's best attribute to be honest. That thick blade really blows through it.

These black cherry trees die once they get to a certain size, fungus all over the bottom on this one but solid throughout.

Re: User pics - 07/22/18 06:48 AM

Sincere question - why not just use a hatchet or axe? Are you splitting wood in a place that does not lend itself to bringing other tools?
Posted by: Leatherman

Re: User pics - 07/22/18 02:28 PM

The merits of "battoning" wood are well established. For one you cannot split wood that small in diameter with an axe very well. The more important aspect is that the wood is long enough so that you can get a lot of long curls or small thick wood shavings for a fire. Saturday when I did that I actually split one section 5 foot in length (a bit too tall) for extra long pieces because it was 90% humidity and raining off and on (this is why I order stainless, micarta and waxed sheath) Needed plenty of dry material to get it going. You can't split smaller stuff with an axe very well let along long pieces. Plus the knife follows the grain and a small curve or knot won't cause you to get stuck or get an incomplete split.

Battoning too thick of wood is a bad idea and I find after ~15 years of doing this that getting the knife stuck in too big of wood is foolish and dangerous if it's stuck and you have a heavy log with a knife tip sticking out.

Battoning is not actually very hard on the knifes edge as the sides of the tool do most of the work. Hence why a dull knife or axe can split just fine for the most part.

Battoning wood takes little effort, is pretty gentle on the knife and low impact and safe as your not swinging anything but a blunt baton and it's not going very far.

I've broken one knife battoning and that was a ka bar in d2 with serrated blade. Serrated blades always fail at the serrations. I had been using it for a long time but it was cold out and that hickory had already taken its toll on several of my tools. ( a large hickory fell down and I processed and burned the whole thing within a month or so) this hickory caused the misalignment in a Busse combat and a Randall 1-6. Hickory is hard but it's also flexible, tough, and tight so it strings when you split it, most wood wants to separate.

I like axes mostly long ones as a short axe is dangerous. I love bow saws and I usually take the 36" with me when I know I'm making a fire.

One of my favorite tools is a panga machete, it can do a lot and the curved tip is great for checking trees (if they are hollow under the bark) cutting vines, moving coals around the fire you name it!

Plenty of people think battoning is knife abuse, it's not. It's way harder on the edge to chop with it. A knife gets damaged when it hits a flat spot. The edge fails to bite in and you impact the edge with force, chopping, battoning, dropping it you name it, it can roll then or break. Knots in wood are harder and round/flat and the grain changes this is why knots are hard on edges. Wood cut with an axe or knife is safer to baton as it's not flat on the end.

Here's a little winkler axe I liked but it had a light blade so it was more like a machete than an axe, less swing weight.

Ka bar broke after a lot of use! Plain edge would have lived.

This Busse got a small bevel dent as in not the edge but a small bend.

The blades will take a bend but always go true after!

Re: User pics - 07/22/18 02:47 PM

As a side note I recall Gaddis quote Bo saying the #5-6 was a great one tool type option as it could chop down a small tree and do many tasks in a pinch. I wouldn't be surprised if Bo didn't baton wood himself. He knew about the grapevine method on the wrist thong, he threw knives, could fly a plane, fisherman, orange groves I'm sure the list goes on he was very multi faceted.

The meat locker I use has the lobby walls covered in plaques and trophy's from KMPA (Kansas Meat Proccesors Association) for their recipes. Not sure how that works exactly. Apparently meat lockers have recipe competitions? I've been going there for 8 years.

Your knife skills are better than mine! I usually use my Outdoor Edge SwingBlaze for deer field dressing (I know, I know - sacrilege)!

But my eyesight, esp. between around 6 inches and a few feet, has become crap over the years. (I wear glasses and have to take them off or put on reading glasses for close-up stuff). I need all the help I can get and the gutting blade on the SwingBlaze really helps.

Re: User pics - 12/06/19 09:19 PM

Hey Nate:

Just kiddin’ but I couldn’t resist.

My Dad and Uncle used to peal peaches, apples, oranges, etc with the same pocket knife that they used to clean fish, castrate calves, lance abscesses on cattle, etc.

One day my uncle was pealing a peach and I asked him if he had washed his knife and he told us that : “ Nope, the blood added flavor and besides that, that kind of stuff was for sissies!”

He was just kidding us but we didn’t bother him for a piece of peach any more.

Sorry if I offended anyone but it stirred up some fond memories of my Dad and Uncle. They have both been gone for a while but I miss them every day.
