which folder to carry

which folder to carry - 01/18/16 02:21 PM

Having too much time on my hands, the biggest decision I have most days, is which folder do I carry.
Here are three of my latest rotation.
The top and bottom ones are from Bret Dowell. The middle (yellow micarta) is a John Lloyd.

Re: which folder to carry - 01/18/16 03:33 PM

I have a couple of John Lloyd wharnies. I'd be partial to his knife.

Re: which folder to carry - 01/18/16 04:08 PM

That is a nice choice, I'm partial to the Lloyd myself.

Billy makes a great point, there is NO need to limit yourself!!!

If I was typing what I am thinking this page would be blank!

Re: which folder to carry - 02/06/16 08:36 AM

Very nice knives, Rod- congrats! I really like your taste in knives smile
With a couple of Bret's knives in my drawer I'm a huge fan of his work. Brilliant work, looking forward to the next. I never had a chance to handle a knife of John Lloyd but I only heard positive comments.
Enjoy them all at once or one after the other wink

Re: which folder to carry - 11/10/17 04:36 PM

My latest Bret Dowell. It came to me a while ago. I have finally decided I will carry this knife daily, which was difficult for me to do. (I am part Scottish!!) But after all, it is a tool, not a fragile piece of glass.

Bret said the micarta will yellow in time.

Looking for a couple pieces of FI at Blade for the next Dowell knife.

Now that's what I call a pocket knife Rod. It already looks kinda yellow. Really like this one alot. Carry it? Why not!

Re: which folder to carry - 11/10/17 07:47 PM

Thank you Warren. I have a couple handfuls of Bret’s knives. I have wanted to carry one for a few years. Finally decided, why not!
I have carried a SAK for 30+ years and a Schrade LB7 for 15+. Now I am up to 3 EDC.

Me too! The best you can do with a folder from Bret is carry it. Then it fully reveals it's perfection. It would be sad if it only sits in a drawer and never cuts anything. Beautiful knife, congrats!

Re: which folder to carry - 12/15/17 05:58 PM

Peter

I have been carrying the Micarta trapper since I got
it.
I thought I had my “addiction” in check until at least the New Year.
But I succumbed to temptation and bought another Dowell
a few days ago.
Then I was talking to Bret and now I/we are working on another
project. I am hopeless!!! I need a folder intervention!!!

Re: which folder to carry - 12/16/17 06:11 PM

Been thinking about rotating this one with my small Seb as an EDC. Chris Reeve Inkosi. Slightly smaller than the Seb. Really cool knife. I like the double lugs too.

Re: which folder to carry - 12/17/17 12:30 AM

Can't go wrong with a Chris Reeve. I carry my large Sebenza every day.
Posted by: rodbrown

Re: which folder to carry - 12/17/17 08:10 AM

Pat

I agree, Sebenza's are great. I have two that are safe queens. But I just bought another one for everyday use. IMO, they are a sturdy, well designed knife.
Posted by: Byrdguy

Re: which folder to carry - 12/17/17 08:43 AM

Yeah, Rod, I have several safe queens, but have carried a small Seb daily for nearly 15 years. Lost my first one after about 10 years of EDC and had no choice but to get another ASAP. Great design and built like a tank.

Heres a Lloyd I carry daily. I love his work, and am looking for another (or two).

I also like John Lloyd's knives. Here's one I own

Re: which folder to carry - 12/19/17 04:45 PM

Very nice Steve. I'm on the lookout for one similar. Mine is horn, and I would like a stag that's half as nice as yours!!

Re: which folder to carry - 12/19/17 07:24 PM

Here's a retired EDC that I carried for a couple of years and it only saw light duty. Made my the late Zolan MCcarty, grandfather of Chris English. It is the first custom knife I ever bought and started my passion for fine knives. I've bought and sold many knives, but I will never sell this one.

I really like Bret Dowell's work. I would go with his knife.

Re: which folder to carry - 03/24/18 07:23 PM

Today was spring cleaning (day 1) of my knives.

I started with some of my folders. I took a picture of my Dowell knives. I actually do carry the one in bottom left of the picture. IMO Bret Dowell makes a great knife, as I have said more than once.

Re: which folder to carry - 03/24/18 09:26 PM

Lot's of great knives Rod. Really like the Saddlehorn, middle row third one down. Would be a tough pick from there, all sweet pocket pals.

Re: which folder to carry - 03/24/18 09:29 PM

Absolutely, any of those would be a great every day carry. Very nice!

Re: which folder to carry - 09/14/18 09:36 AM

I acquired another folder from Bret Dowell.

The FI came from the Blade Show this year. The knife is a two blade Gunstock. It is a proto knife for Bret.

The last picture shows the new knife with my Dowell EDC.

Very, very nice, Rod. The handle looks outstanding! Do you have a pic with the blade open, too? Bret makes a great knife.

Here are 3 pictures. Not your quality, for sure.

We have a bunch of people coming and going the next few days. After the Christmas rush, I will endeavour to get you better pics.

Merry Christmas

Nice Collection!

Not being able to make up your mind is a GOOD thing!

Re: which folder to carry - 05/18/19 05:06 PM

Coach
Not being able to make up my mind is only good in some instances! As much I admire my RMK and the workmanship that goes into them, I don’t carry one everyday. But I do carry a folder everyday.
Danny Gutcher is the only person I know that carries a RMK everyday or at least everyday he is at work.

I carried a Cattleman's for years, along with an early Spyderco designed Benchmade ATS-34, then finally settled on a Chris Reeve large Sebenza with serations. I still have the coolest optioned Cattleman's ever, IMHO.

With jeans, my EDC is a large Sebenza in a snap-on belt pouch. When less casually dressed, I carry a small Inkosi with pocket clip. For formal, it's a Tim Britton folder. Chris Reeve's knives are great!

Re: which folder to carry - 05/22/19 08:54 AM

Hi everybody,

Personally, since 7 years now, I use one made by a french knifemaker. It is a Fontenille/Pataud Gentleman with a stag handle. It has a XC75 Carbon Steel. The blade is 3 1/8" and the whole knife open is +/- 7".

As u can see, it has lived until now. Most of the time, I hold it in my shoulder possible bag. I don't like much holding something in my
pockets trousers.
Here is a back view

Re: which folder to carry - 05/22/19 10:26 AM

Lytridis--

That is an honest using knife. It looks to be durable and capable of doing everyday tasks very well.

I agree with Larry.

I looked on their site and they make some nice stuff.

Re: which folder to carry - 05/23/19 05:18 AM

Indeed. The knife has saw several countries and continent and he never failed although it has been abused. Neither on the opening, neither on the lockback. The blade open very easily. Not a one hand open (they have a special version for that) but nearly as easy. The blade is also very easy to sharpen and it hold the edge for a long moment. I've choose the basic version but you can add several features as name or guilloche.

Re: which folder to carry - 05/24/19 09:13 AM

Here is what I carry for everyday use. (peeling grapefruit of slicing apples for lunch).

It is a Camillus Yello-Jacket. I've had it forever and I can't find anything better for what I need it for.
