Numbered knives - 12/21/07 11:42 PM

Hello all,

I have a two part question. I have heard that Tony numbers his first nine knives of a paticular pattern and handle material, then on following knives the numbers are omitted, is this correct?

Also, does Reese do the same thing?

Thank you,

Re: Numbered knives - 12/25/07 07:18 PM

You almost got it right. Here is the numbering system as I understand it:

The first knife made of any pattern is now stamped "Prototype". Let's say a 3.5" pattern is upsized to a 4" pattern, even that first 4" version would be stamped "Prototype".

Subsequent knives of a pattern would be stamped starting with "0" and then "1 thru 9" for following knives of the same handle material. Knives aren't numbered past "9".

Does that help? If I'm wrong, Tony might step in here and set us straight.

Re: Numbered knives - 12/26/07 12:08 AM

I’d say there are some discrepancies here and there….and it also depends on which pattern you are talking about.

The “prototype” stamp was introduced maybe 2002-2003…so the older patterns start with a No.0….and way before that they started with No.1…kinda of a “figure it out as you go” kinda deal.

But for the most part you got it right
and I'd say Reese does the same

I think Reese uses a 0 mark for prototypes...

Re: Numbered knives - 12/26/07 08:15 PM

...And just to make things interesting, Tony told me today that he only series numbered the handle types on the Lockback Whittler.

As for me, there is only one(thank GOD) and my wife has my number

hummmm.....wonder why?

(you may want to add BeaverTails along with LockBack Whittlers )

Well, in a similar vein, I have “007” on my buttocks. Actually, just one “0” and one “7” tattooed on the left and right cheeks, respectively. The other “0” is only visible during a full moon.

Well, thank you all for the replies, I'm clear on it now . Except for MRobuck, a little to much information...............lol.

There is a nice "number'd" SaddleHorn on eBay right now.

That's a sweet one too but MRobuck got the cherry.

I don't know about that, John. The one on eBay is very, very nice.

It is very nice.....it would be interesting to know when that knife was made. ???

Randy,

I feel a full moon rising at Blade.

I don't know for sure but that sure looks like a fairly recent knife.

Re: Numbered knives - 01/12/08 09:28 PM

Yep...looks real new
Wish they were better pictures to see what makes it a "Zero"???

Re: Numbered knives - 01/13/08 11:25 AM

I don't know John, A "0" full size saddlehorn. I wouldn't say REAL new. Could be late 90's.. Tony made alot of saddlehorns, right?? It is a nice knife... The price isn't bad either (now anyway - unless Mr. Robuck bids it up. ). Stag is nice, but the seller sure makes it sound like "SUPER STAG" which it is not... None the less, nice knife ....

Re: Numbered knives - 01/13/08 12:50 PM

The “Bose” SaddleHorn Pattern was first made in 1985. It was patterned after two old knives. The frame and clip blade are from an old dismantled 1902 W.R. Case & Son 62100 SaddleHorn (4 5/8" closed) and the potbelly blade was from Napanok SaddleHorn.

This pattern has evolved over the years and I guess with each new changes a No.0 was stamped on one of the blades...with that thought there must be something different about this knife....??? If I could see better pictures I think I could put a year on it (+/- 2 or 3 years).

Re: Numbered knives - 01/13/08 01:36 PM

Bob after thinking about it...I would say you are right about that knife being made in the late 1990’s.

In 2000 a new Federal Shield was introduced. It was patterned off a large Cattaraugus swing guard “King of the Woods” folding hunter. This shield on the eBay knife is an older style and probably not used as much on SaddleHorns after 2000.

New'r Shield

Old'r Shield

Which do you like better?

Re: Numbered knives - 01/13/08 02:44 PM

It could be a 0 through 100 or no number at all..Its still a fantastic Knife. My suggestion is..if you really want to know, call Tony and ask him yourself????

Take a deep breath there Randy. I never said it wasn't a nice knife. What about this area of "Bose Knife Discussion" don't you like?

Re: Numbered knives - 01/14/08 08:36 PM

Randy that is well said and John that's extremely enlightening about the shieldology. I did catch wind of some interesting info about that knife. Maybe someone who knows better than I could be of help here. That's great stag on a wonderful big saddle horn. And the number is fun too.

Re: Numbered knives - 01/15/08 11:13 AM

Hopefully whoever won it will post some good pictures here. The seller in Japan told me that was his last and best Bose knife.

Re: Numbered knives - 02/06/08 11:48 PM

FWIW, my understanding is that the ebay saddlehorn was the only Tony Bose saddlehorn ever numbered. Talk about unique!

Re: Numbered knives - 05/20/08 04:57 PM

Hello guys, I have a question about numbered knives. I just started buying some folding knives. I wanted to know if the numbered Bose knives are worth more because of the numbering or not? Also what are the going prices for T. and R. BOSE knives?

Thanks, Rick

Re: Numbered knives - 08/20/08 01:20 PM

So if Tony made a one of a kind, would he number it 0, or would he number it 1?
Posted by: John_Nugent

Re: Numbered knives - 08/20/08 01:47 PM

If it were an older pattern it could have started out with a “1”, but for the most part they are a “0” or a “Prototype” when they are first made.

Re: Numbered knives - 08/20/08 03:03 PM

Is 1992 considered an older patern?
Posted by: John_Nugent

Re: Numbered knives - 08/20/08 03:08 PM

I would say it's semi-early and a 1 could very easily be a first one
Posted by: John_Hanlon

Re: Numbered knives - 08/20/08 09:16 PM

In answer to your question, if the knife was today more than likely it would be marked PROTOTYPE. The first knife pattern is now marked with prototype and the numbering starts at #0 and stops at #9.

Re: Numbered knives - 08/23/08 05:30 PM

Here is the one I was talking about. It was made in 1992. It is very gorgeous.

That is a sweet knife
Posted by: MRobuck

Re: Numbered knives - 08/23/08 06:40 PM

I agree, very sweet. It's almost like a Case 83 whittler. So what is the number on it?

I like the little wharnie blade instead of a coping blade.

Re: Numbered knives - 08/23/08 07:25 PM

How long is this knife closed?
Posted by: RIgaman

Re: Numbered knives - 08/23/08 10:09 PM

Tony, it is the one you made for Buck Woodard. It is around 4.3 inches closed.

I got a bunch of photocopies of a similar case whittler with it. I am not sure if Mr. Woodard requested a similar knife, or what. It is numbered 1.

Re: Numbered knives - 08/23/08 10:24 PM

Here are some of the papers that I got with it. There are way too many papers to show.

Buck wanted me to blow up an 83 whittler to 4 1/4 so that's what I did. I cut the stag out of the middle of a big set and it worked out very nice. That's the only one of those I can remember making.

Re: Numbered knives - 08/24/08 08:07 AM

That is a very cool pattern. How does the frame compare to the NorthField Whittler?

Re: Numbered knives - 08/24/08 09:29 AM

It's not as wide at the big end. That stag was killer on that knife.

Re: Numbered knives - 08/24/08 12:24 PM

Ya, Buck said it was the only one you made like it, and wouldnt be making another. I really like it. I have never owned a knife like this. The quality is out of this world. I wish I could take better pictures so you guys could see how goreous the Stag really is.

Tony, It is great to hear about this knife from you. My first knife was made by you, and I used the heck out of it. It had gotten stolen when I was in college. Since then I have been looking for that perfect knife made by you, or Reese. I honestly cant remember if Reese made the one I had before, or you. I had bought it in 98 or 99 from a friend of mine. It was perfect. I got alot of good use out of it, and it brought many memories. I would love to have a similar knife one of these days. It was a single blade lock back, with a gorgeous engraving, and Ivory handles. Maybe you could make me something like that. Do you still take orders? I know the wait would be a long time, but I know it is well worth it.
