AUTOMATIC KNIVES

I hope that this will come under folding knives,but does anyone here have automatic knives???
IN my state (CT) you can possess one on your property but not carry it unless you are law enforcement,so I am basically covered.

Right now I have:
1- Ox Forge original "Black Knife"
2- MicroTech OTFs
2- Rat Worx blades
1- BenchMark Sidewinder

According to AKTI,37 states now allow auto knives with hopefully more joining in.

The ultimate one hand opener! I have a few. Mostly Benchmades but I picked up a Buck 112 auto recently. I don't tend to carry them but I believe in Florida you can carry with a CCP.

I believe Michigan ranks as the worst state in regards to automatic Knives. Possible 4 year felony to even have one in your home. Obviously not fully enforced, but it is on the books if caught with one. I hear in Florida you can walk around in public with a switchblade between your teeth.....legally.

P.S. Michigan, does allow anyone (non felon) to walk into Walmart with a sidearm on their hip.

I just went online with BladeHQ and ordered a Buck Impact auto knife.
Hopefully it should arrive in a few days. Retails for $225-259 and BladeHQ hade this one going for $159.

I thought that Buck only made the 110 in auto configuration but obviously they expanded the line.

I am glad to see that Knife Rights and AKTI is agressivley going after states to eliminate the switchblade laws.

Colorado made them legal to carry this year. I like micro tech out the front knives.

Alabama is legal. I have an assortment, but am partial to Microtechs.

I have two HALO's .....they are by far the best action, but so damn big. Sheath carry only.

The largest of the autos that I have is an Ox Forge "Black Knife" and that is about the upper limit for pocket carry.
So far,all the rest are clip on type.

I have two on me now,a MicroTech in the left pocket and a smaller Rat Worx in the right.

Probably when the Buck Impact arrives,it will replace the MicroTech for the time being.

I tend to "rotate" my knives and carry pieces.

Biggest auto I ever owned was a Benchmade Ruckas. Huge knife.

I have a Benchmade 5220SBK, which is their "Griptilian" line, axis lock for first responders. Very solid, strong spring. The lock release is also the blade release, which tickles my "design efficiency" nerve.

I don't carry it mostly because recovery isn't as graceful as a non-automatic knife.



Does state law prohibit city from enforcing stricter laws? Last I checked, Denver was pretty bad with their knife restrictions.

MI recently repealed the auto knife law. Still it is pretty much in a gray area about OTFs but it is better than it had been.

Florida has NO laws on open carry knives. Which works well with me wanting to rotate and carry around my various Randalls 8-)

I had two of the original Ox Black Knives now down to one.

Charlie Ochs used to attend the Blade show and I would see him each year but now he no longer goes there.

I found that the Black Knives,at least to me,have an inherit weakness of the coil/mainspring. No problem though as when it does go,Ox Forge will repair it for a small fee and get it back to you right away.

In a couple of days,my new Buck Impact will be arriving from BLADE HQ.

When I got the Ox Forge Knives,they were black as I think that was the only color available back then (early 90s).

If I am not mistaken,I think that the Ox Forge knives were the first quality auto knives available. But I could be wrong on this.

Wayne, I have been a collector for years. The Black Knives are quality for sure. Here are some pics of some other quality autos.

An old lever lock I'm partial to, I bought it at the SOF show in Vegas in 1991.

I carried this old Benchmade in Iraq, it's took a beating and held up great!

I bought this 9050 overseas in 2004, but never needed it. I couldn't wear out the 9100 above.

Wally, The 9050 was issued to some of the US Air Force personnel around 10-15 years ago. Not sure what they issue now. The 9050's that were serial numbered had to be turned back in when done using. The lever locks are nice also. Here are a few other types of lever locks.

Nice Benchmades. I bet if you sent the old one back to Benchmade they would restore it for you. But being that you had it in the sandbox with you,I think you would like it the way it is.

I just received my Buck Impact from Blade HQ. Really nice. Wish I had the ability to post a photo of it.

Tony, That is a model MC1 US Air Force flight suit knife. It fit in a small pocket in the crotch area of the flight suit. My Dad was first issued one in 1964. He gave it to me and my Mom took it away from me. For all of about 3 days I was the only 7 year old with a switchblade. Different days back at Pope AFB. Oh boy.

Eric, I bought (I think) 4 of the 9050s from a KBR employee at LSA Anaconda in 2004. They sold the same knife at the PX there, but I got 4 from the KBR fella for what 1 would cost at the PX. The 9100 was issued to a friend of mine stationed at Camp Cedar, who was working as a mechanic. When I got home I gave away the extra 9050s and a bunch of other souvenirs. I still carry the 9100 pretty regularly.

Tune convinced me 2 years ago at Blade that I should get a Microtech OTF. Never been sorry.
Also an older Benchmade 3550 Stimulus, a Mel Pardue blade. Both are lightning fast. I've also had many other Benchmade autos and all were very well made.

Love all those Autos. Let's see some more.

The top one is the Orange handled Knife I got at 7 years old(1965) from my Dad. The first ones issued were Schrade Walden made. Then Logan-Smyth and finally Camillus which had the final contract for the US Military.

Just looking at all these quality auto knives reminds me that a number of years ago,auto knives called "switchblades" back then were not of the quality now.

I remember back in the early 50's I bought a much outlawed "Wolf Killer" switchblade knife from an ad in,I think it was Field and Stream Magazine.

When it finally arrived,I opened and closed the blade a few times,then it was basically toast. So much for a $2.98 knife!!!

Just take a look at the Buck,Micro-Tec,Rat Worx to name a few. They are light years in quality in comparison to the autos of years gone by.

Wayne, You are right about the quality change since the 1980's in high end auto's. Some of those 1950 auto's fetch a lot more than $3 bucks today. These pictured examples all still work. Top 2 pics show double auto bladed examples.

I have a hard time trying to decide which auto to carry. I usually switch between the Micro-Tec,Rat Worx or newly acquired Buck Impact.

In my state,they are not allowed to carry except in your home or property with the exception of LEOs which I am retired.

Yeah, back in the 80s some tried to get around legislation by selling a "kit" that was two pieces, blade and "everything else". Compliance with any state and local laws was left up to the purchaser.

For the OTF, you unscrewed one screw on a bolster, lifted the bolster and dropped the blade in place, then re-assembled.

It was a horrible "hunk of junk" knife, but I had an OTF auto!

It became legal in Michigan on Oct 10th[law officially active 90 days after Governor signed it].
OTF with a spear blade sharpened on both sides still illegal for some reason.

For some reason,legislators tend to keep some sort of "regulation" in a law when they repeal a law.

That is the way they are. I stopped trying to figure that out years ago.

Just like in my state,a regular Ruger Mini-14 is OK. Put a folding stock on it and you now are looking at some serious slammer time.

Same thing here Wayne. NYS says any AR15 with a pistol grip, collapsible stock, and a muzzle comp is an assault weapon. But its ok to buy the same gun with a NYS complaint stock, less the comp. That gun cant hurt anyone. The Safe Act is bizzare.

Now here is something really bizarre,the Mossberg Shockwave is pretty much a no-no in this state. But you can purchase their NFA shorter versions providing you go through the NFA stamp process.

I guess it is OK as long as you pay the $200. NFA fee or the $5. AOW weapon fee.

Looking how The Safe Act and all the other stuff that was crammed through after the Sandy Hook tragedy back in 2012 makes you really think and wonder .

None of those laws will really prevent a tragedy. If some clown is intent on murdering a bunch of folks,violating yet another law will not really deter them one bit.

But there I go,talking common sense again.

I have one TAH. It’s not as snappy as some, but has improved with repeated openings. Neat knife. I have some conversions that open with more snap, but the factory knife is much cleaner.

There's a guy who brings 1 to our local Gun show.... I handle it every show since the 1 right before Blade. I would probably NOT buy that 1 as the spring may be worn the hell out... LOL

Pat, After 50 rounds I can honestly say I love what Sig has done. It is very accurate and for a big "heavy" pistol very enjoyable to shoot. Plan on shooting it with my 2 sons this afternoon, weather permitting.

I bought a P320 Compact .45 acp last year to replace my 1911. I became a big fan of the P320. So when I heard that SIG was coming out with a new 10mm, I knew I needed that as well. I do not think it is a big seller though,

If you are planning on a Microtech Combat Troodon, you better have a strong thumb because this knife has a mighty strong spring.

Also don't gob a lot of oil on the blade, as it will cause the blade to derail.

If you have this happen just spray into the knife with Hoppes Blast&Clean, this will get you back to normal operation, and beats sending knife back to Microtech.

I bought a Microtech Ultratech (2018 Blade show special) and it does have strong springs, but I can still operate it with my somewhat arthritic thumbs. Good solid knife. I like it a lot.
I tried several upper end (cost-wise) OTF knives at Blade and was unable to operate some due to the spring strength.

Glad to hear one of the forums members were able to get the Microtech knife show special, I also have the microtech UltraTech it's a smaller knife and the spring is a lot less strong very easy on my poor thumb.

I only have 3 Auto knives...that'll probably change since Scott introduced me to Pro-Tech. They make a great auto. The action on it is so crisp. It locks up tight. Sorta opens up like it's running away from you.

I got interested in auto knives with the first knife I collected - from a Russian sailor in 1966.
I like the custom auto's. One is by Gail Lunn, who names her knives. This is "Black Gold" - Double Action using both an auto button or a thumb post with actual California Gold Nuggets.

I was on a Navy Destroyer tied up in Naples, Italy. Across the pier was a Russian Merchant ship. I had taken Russian in High School, so I was trying it out on a sailor from the Merchant Ship.
He wanted a US Flag and offered to trade for it. I said I didn't have a flag, but I had a pen with a US Logo.
He got an officer from his ship to come over and approve the trade. I learned later it was probably the "political officer" that was required whenever a Russian ship went to foreign ports.
I ended up with a Spanish made "switchblade" that was very sharp and opened with a quick snap. I still have that knife.

Depends on your country or your state laws.
Some cities, like Denver, make up their own rules too.

Here in Texas, you can carry just about anything you want to.

Now that I think back, I was once warned about buying a "ballistic knife"

A ballistic knife is a knife with a detachable blade that can be ejected to a distance of several yards by pressing a trigger or operating a lever or switch on the handle. Spring-powered ballistic knives briefly gained notoriety in the United States in the mid-1980s after commercial examples were marketed and sold in the United States and other Western countries. Since then, the marketing and sale of ballistic knives to civilians has been restricted or prohibited by law in several countries.

In its spring-propelled form, the blade of a ballistic knife is theoretically capable of being fired to an effective range of around 5 meters (about 16 feet) at a speed of 63 km/h (39 mph). Ballistic knives using compressed air or gas propulsion to fire the blade can be made somewhat more powerful, and do not suffer from spring fatigue over time.

Similar to conventional automatic knives, federal law makes ballistic knives with a spring-operated blade illegal to possess, manufacture, sell, or import "in or affecting interstate commerce." This means they are illegal to import from outside the United States, as well as buy or sell over state lines, including possessing or making them with intent to sell over state lines. Like James, I have become a Protech fan. Well made (in the US) and reasonably priced. I picked up this "Don" at Blade (obviously not my picture but better than what I could do). It called to me as I walked by the Protech booth and I just had to have it. ;-)
