New and on the way from Behring Made

New and on the way from Behring Made - 03/07/16 04:23 PM

I met with James and Grant at the Lakeland show this year and in less than 15 minutes we had these two knives nailed down from inspired blade shapes. I knew I wanted these blades hammer marked, with sub-hilts, and with my handle material. James suggested the Musk Ox center spacers along with at least one in copper hilts. They are absolutely drop dead amazing; I can't wait till they get here after returning from Kenny Rowe custom leather. I'll post up the completed project when finished but James and Grant wanted me to post these up for all to enjoy.
A big thank you once again to James, Grant and the crew for an over the top job!

Those guys at Behring are really special in the custom knife making world. They are in a nitch all their own. Can you think of any other custom knife maker that goes the distance with such craftmanship as the Jim Behring bunch? Us Randall fans are very lucky to have joined with the 2 best knife makers around today, Randall Made and Behring. Both rock!!

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 03/13/16 05:44 PM

I have heard so many good things about Behring knives that I decided to jump in. I sent an old ratty-handled Model 14 to be beautified with a Behring handle creation, and followed it with a request for a pocket knife, a trout and bird knife, and a fighter. All, I hope, will arrive on my doorstep later this month. I hav already made suitable arrangements in a display case for their appearance.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 03/27/16 05:00 PM

I should get the knives in about a week. After that, I will cut leather for two of them, probably one in alligator hide, and one with a carved floral design, likely for the fighter, which will offer a bit more space for carving. Funny how I got into, leather stuff....in high school art class, when they discovered that I was colourblind, they threw out my oil painting stuff and handed me a leather belt blank. I have never looked back.......

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 04/06/16 06:29 PM

Well, thanks, Warren, and Chief, too. Happy to see that my little hobby is so well received. As for sewing, I wish! Everything is sewn by hand, with two needles, known in the leather fraternity as saddle stitching. It's not bad when I make wallets, luggage and the like, but just try sewing through a full inch of leather on a saddle cantle. I use pliers on every stitch then, to draw the needles through the awl hole. The second scabbard is well underway....a high ride, with alligator hide, (well, cowhide made to look like alligator) and a canteen snap, for the keeper.,

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 04/09/16 12:15 AM

Just two months ago in Lakeland FL this was just a dream. I started this thread one month later when the knives were finished, and just another month to delivery today.
Expectations exceeded, the guys at Behring Made are over the top; Kenny Rowe included!
I'll go back and summarize that an idea came to reality in about 15 minutes. James and Grant went to work and we had this whole package "hammered" out in short order. I handed James two pieces of crown stag and there you go.
The blades are inspired shapes. To those that think these are just "copies" they are not. They are longer, wider, heavier. Add the sub hilts & spacers in copper and nickel silver, Musk Ox center spacers, and pinned stag, and you have a one of a kind set of knives. The package wouldn't be complete without custom leather and Kenny Rowe once again did an amazing job.
Once again many thanks to James and the entire Behring Made team for outstanding workmanship and delivering this set in record time. You guys rock! cool

Pat,

Thanks for asking. The larger blade obviously similar to a Sasquatch, is a somewhat larger profile however still 3/8" thick and 11" long. It's damn heavy.
The inspiration for the smaller blade was to capture the look of a 19 but in a 7" blade. It is proportionately larger in profile yet still 1/4" stock.
The hammer mark finish is quickly becoming a trademark of many Behring Made customs. The flexibility in hardware materials, spacers, and handle material is what is very cool and allows a lot of creativity in development.
I'm working on my next project now and it's going to be awesome!

There was a mission knife that I would have bought at Blade......but the flowery sheath & ironwood gave me pause.

Chief, in my original communication with Grant, I asked him for a blade between 6-7" I won't know for sure until I put a tape in it. The whole knife is a work of art. It has me thinking of a matching Bowie style...

This Mission Knife will soon be on the way from Grant and Jim. The handle design was inspired by the Randall #25, but we substituted musk ox for stag horn. Grant sent me these photos, and their work just leaves me speechless. Just brilliant. If there's anyone doing better custom work these days, I have yet to see it. Grant and I are discussing the custom sheath.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/03/16 02:49 PM

Great set Warren. The FWI handles have a wonderful "feel" to them and the three together are just killer.

I like them all, but the 'fat' handled knife looks wickedly fierce. Is that a drop point blade profile (it looks almost like a drop point bowie)? How long is the blade? Did you design it (and, if so, have you named it)?

Gerry, that's a gorgeous bowie knife. Congrats! The guys at BMK are just killing it. The hammermark finish sets off the rest of the blade perfectly.

Love the high degree of polish on the hilt (you can see the reflection of the hammered skulls in the bottom photo).

Are the hilt and butt cap brass, copper, something else? They look almost like brass in the top photo, but more copper-y in the other photos.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/03/16 06:15 PM

Bob,

Thanks for your reply and kind words. With respect to the large knife, yes James is calling it a "drop point camp knife" and about 8" long. Heck it even has a fire bowl! All three knives have handle material supplied by me that I acquired from an old friend prior to Blade and gave to James at the show.
I'm including some cropped images of the handle material and they are not great but were taken and processed from a cell phone but you get the idea of before and after.
The fillet just happened. The handle is an artifact fossil net weight that is quite thin and would require a knife with a small tang. BINGO, fillet just made sense but I didn't want to lose too much of that handle so I asked James to make a proportionately larger blade. In addition I wanted the humpbacks in the spine so James gave me EXACTLY what I asked for and I couldn't be happier.
And the pocket knife is one of James's designs one of many he offers in his pocket series. I chose the Alaskan shape as I'm partial to that blade.
Again, many thanks and wait till you see what's waiting for tomorrow's show. Wow!
Posted by: RamKingJC

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/03/16 06:28 PM

The Alaskan style blade really lends itself to the pocket knife concept. I carry 1 as does Grant.... actually after seeing his in Lakeland I was sold on the blade shape right then.

I can't wait to see what you toss up tomorrow Warren, it most likely will not suck!
Posted by: rfcarlin

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/03/16 06:50 PM

Warren,

Thanks for the info and additional pics on the BMKs. The more I look at your trio, the more I see (and like). The pocket knife is beautifully designed and executed, and all 3 FWI handles are drop dead gorgeous. The fillet knife is just plain cool. I'm hoping you get to use it. It looks razor sharp.

I'm thinking my next build with them will be similar (blade-wise)to your drop point. I really like the blade profile and it looks like it would be a really solid heavy duty user.

I'm also thinking hard about a pocket knife as well. I carry a Dozier personal for my EDC (and I love it) but a BMK pocket knife in the Alaskan profile, with a custom handle, would take things to a new level.

Congrats again on a great group of knives. I always love seeing BMK knives. Creativity and execution perfectly married.

P.S. I think that the sheath for my Mission knife will look very similar to the caiman skin and black leather sheath created for your drop point camp knife. Grant suggested a similar design with aluminum fittings (to match the Mission hilt and butt cap), and I wholeheartedly endorsed the idea. This will be my first 'exotic' skin sheath, and I can't wait to see/get it. I also just picked up the bison horn and musk ox hunter from their website. I just loved that horn and finally pulled the trigger on the purchase (after dilly-dallying over it for a few days due to budget concerns). This will be my 3rd and 4th BMK in the collection and I could not be happier with all of them. Jim and Grant love what they do and it shows!

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/03/16 07:56 PM

Hey Bob,

Grant is doing a great job of working what you're looking for into one of their sheath supplier's. They have options for your every imagination.
Take your time and pick something cool. It won't take long for it to become a reality. So have some fun, take a chance and roll the dice. I'll bet you will love the outcome and James always stands by his work.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/04/16 09:55 AM

Warren, congratulations on another pair of masterpieces from BMK!

Those bowies look like they're ready for some serious action. I love the SW's double clip/curve, musk ox spacer (which almost gets lost between the blade and FWI), and the gentle "S" curve to the hilt. The Sasquatch's blade design (love the deep choil), copper single hilt and crows beak carved handle are just WOW!

Never mind taking on a Sasquatch, these bad boys could handle Godzilla!

You certainly have an eye for finding impressive FWI and giving James and Grant serious material with which they can work their magic.

Congrats to you on two new great additions to the collection and to BMK for just killing it every day!

Bob-
The guard and butt cap are copper. You are right, they are highly polished. The photos don't really do the knives justice. The combination of spacers and Jame's choice of stag was spot on. One of small things that really impresses me, is how they clean up the soldering junction between the blade and the guard. It is always very clean and smooth.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/04/16 11:17 AM

Gerry,

It's a great knife; the spacers work beautifully with the stag (and I love leather spacers on pretty much everything) and the polished copper just glows.

Your comments are dead on...the BMK "detail" work is second to none. Their blades have a clean look and the handles sit perfectly in the hand. Jim and Grant are great to work with, and go out of their way to make sure everything is just right. I've become a big fan very quickly.

Congrats again on a wicked cool addition to your collection.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/05/16 09:37 AM

Warren,

A great blade...gotta get me one.

A wondrous transformation. It went from being a very cool and serious bayonet (those sawteeth look fierce; I can only imagine that whoever designed it meant to inspire fear in those on the receiving end) to looking like it was the short sword carried by Captain Nemo during his undersea excursions from the Nautilus (elegant yet efficiently functional).

What a great job of re-imagining the blade and executing on their vision by James and Grant.

Really nice stag. Did you supply or did BMK supply? Is that a walrus spacer? Are you having custom sheath made for it?

Sorry for all the questions, but it's such a cool looking piece and inquiring minds want to know. Congrats on another Behring masterwork!
Posted by: W Polidori

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/05/16 10:17 AM

Bob,

I did send James a couple of pieces of crown stag but they were a bit too large. James though this was a better fit. And yes I believe that is a FWI spacer. I'm putting some ideas together for leather. Not sure what it looks like yet.
Sawteeth are incredibly sharp. They are the real deal

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/06/16 07:21 AM

Warren,
You certainly have an eye for unique blades. Seeing that bayonet takes me back to a German WWI vintage one I saw as a teen. I thought that thing was bad-ass when I was 15. I've never seen another like it until now. Great concept, beautiful stag handle. I fully expected to see some type of sword cane set up with that handle and blade combo smile

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/06/16 07:56 AM

Thanks Gerry. If it were not for an old friend who is a Swiss military collector I would have never known. And you are correct WWI vintage.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/06/16 05:06 PM

Just one more reason that not even the German army (in WWI) or the German or Soviet armies messed with the Swiss (in WWII).

Who'd want to fight in the Alps against what're probably the world's best mountain fighters (especially on their home turf) and they're armed with that sort of weapon?

This just finished today, pics are from from Grant. Recurve fighter, 11" hammer marked blade, N/S hilt, Artifact Fossil handle with twin firebowls. This is a piece of handle material again from blade. It's going out for leather and will post when complete.
You did it again James and crew, thanks guys.

Sharpi,

The boys just keep tearing it up.
Except for a few where I was pretty specific, I give James some creative leeway. We start with a Blade and a hilt material that we think work best with the handle material. Sometimes things change along the way, sometimes not. We've had a few lately where the blade found the handle. Some of this fossil was big and needed a big blade "to tame it" in James's words.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/13/16 08:26 AM

Warren,

The shape of the knife and the unique twin fireball handle is fantastic. Grand Slam was hit on this one! That is one serious knife.

Amazing the things that you find and ideas you come away from Blade. For any serious knife collector it is the place to go. For the newbie to collecting it is the start to understanding what can be done. The creativity and opportunity to see what the knife community is doing is a real eye opener. Counting the days to next year.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/25/16 10:40 PM

New Hunter just in from Behring Made. The hits just don't stop from the Missoula masters. Here are the specs:

-Blade: 4.25” 01 tool steel. Hammermark finish. Stamped “J Behring Jr Montana” with double knives and BM logo on reverse.
-Handle: American bison horn. Copper single hilt and pins. Black, white, copper and musk ox horn spacers.
-OAL: 8.75”
-Sheath: Behring (Warlander) handmade (and hand-tooled) black leather belt sheath with snap. Reverse stamped with “Warlander Leather” and “BM” logos.
-BMK website description: This beautiful new Behring Made hunter is hand forged from high carbon 01 tool steel and it measures 4 1/4" from tip to guard with a razor sharp hollow grind and a hammermark finish. The copper guard is soldered in place above black, white, copper and musk ox boss spacers, but the American Bison handle is the true standout feature. Pinned with copper and dawning a gorgeous figure, the overall length measures 8 3/4" and it comes in a custom sheath from Warlander Leather.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/28/16 09:21 PM

Here are first photos (courtesy of Grant) of the Warlander custom sheath (caiman inlay) made for the 6" Mission knife with #25 musk ox handle which James and Grant forged for me. It is on the way as of last Friday.

These guys are creating some classic knives and the Warlander folks are clearly inspired to create some beautiful complementary sheaths.

All I can say is thank you to James and Grant (and Warlander) for sharing their artistry. I could not be more pleased with the Behring Made knives that have become a favorite part of my collection.

Now, if only I could bring myself to actually use them...but they're just so damned gorgeous. I think, however, that if I give it time, it may well happen. I just took my RMK Model 28 out camping this weekend for the first time. I loved the feel of it on my hip, and I had a ball using it in the great outdoors (and damn is it sharp!).

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/29/16 10:13 AM

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Chief, I don't have the knife yet, but I believe that the hilt is nickel silver, the butt is aluminum and the spacers are black, aluminum and horsehide. I really like the BMK Mission blade profile as well; a great looking all-round hunter-camper-utility design (and it looks like it would make a good fighter as well if you built it with a double hilt...hmmm, now there's a thought).

"The James Gang" (great name Pap!) just smoked it out of the park with this one.

Warren, I'm sure that a Mission will join the rest of your BMK family sooner or later. You've got some killer pieces and I can't wait to see what's coming next.

News flash from Behring Made. Grant just sent these pics moments ago. I gave James a really nice pice of Narwhal at Blade and we've been waiting for the right blade to find the handle. Grant had been keeping me up to date daily and he's just as stoked. All N/S hilt, collar, and butt plate. Love how he left just a bit of bark in shaping the handle. Oh man great job guys. Can’t thank you enough.

Wow Warren...you've got a great eye for handle material. That is some gorgeous narwhal tusk/tooth.

Ronnie's right, Bowie would've loved that knife, it is one heavy duty bada$$ blade. And the hammermark finish gives it just enough of a touch of darkness to complement the blade finish and handle.

The BMK crew has created another masterpiece. Congratulations all around!

I can't wait to see the sheath you've got planned for this one. Can Warlander do a Narwhal skin inlay? Is it doable? If they could get a section with the speckled/swirled pattern, it would be crazy cool.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 09/23/16 06:21 PM

I like how the handle grows in size from the hilt to the butt.
First time I've seen finger grips on a BMK......nice!
Nice S shaped hilt, to subtle for me, I like it a little more obvious but nice all the same!
Big fan of that copper butt plate! Plates always look sexy when fitted to stag.

Easy there Chief.....

I ordered FG on this one.

Posted by: Chief

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 09/23/16 08:18 PM

While I do remember that one & yes....I forgot!
I consider that a re-handle as opposed to a full BMK.
It still kinda proves my point with as many as we see I will correctly say that it's one of 2 that I have seen.....or remember seeing.
Sexy knife Tune I am starting to become a leather fan!

I've got a Mud sheath out right now can't wait for the first look.

Most of you are aware of our craftsman Travis and the story of his time in the US Marine Corps. The LA Times has been here the last few days, filming Travis as we go through the process of making a knife as he tells the story of what happened. I was busy here in the office throughout, but James informed me that Warren's new custom got a good bit of airtime, as it was the one they were working on. Links to a video and / or article will be posted once I have them.

Had to finish what I started earlier today and they all are amazing stories. All hero's and if you don't have a heavy heart or a tear in your eye after this story you're not human.
Thank you Travis for your service and my heart goes out for your loss. You’re truly an amazing person.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 11/21/16 09:35 PM

Warren, a good friend of mine was killed in an IED in 2008. The first American to be killed that year, Jan 2nd, 2008. He left 3 kids and a wife at age 37. I just happened to see her smile a couple of days ago, first time in 8 years. So many people fight and die for freedom, so I think anyone who is here should never waste it. You have to keep going, living, loving, and being free. That's what we owe them.
It took me a long time to learn that.

The newest masterwork from BMK.

5.25" drop point blade with hammermark finish. Handle is of ancient walrus ivory in crow's beak configuration with oosik, black and copper spacers and copper guard/pin. Sheath is from Warlander in black leather and beaver tail. Feels like it would be an awesome camping/hunting knife. Thanks again to those crazily talented guys in Missoula.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 12/22/16 03:45 PM

Well they did it again and just in time for Christmas too!
I called Grant a few weeks ago and told him I wanted a Gambler style knife with a small Chute blade. They had a gorgeous piece of mammoth with lots of blue color. They paired it with nickel silver hardware and there you have it. Oh and how about the Stingray sheath from Warlander? Amy did a fantastic job. The design in the center is way cool. So we're calling this one a "Chute Boot". Great job BMK, thanks again guys!

Forgive the length of this post; I'm very excited.

Got home from work today to find a package on my doorstep. Brought it inside and dug out my trusty model 5 to do box-opening chores.

Opened it up and pulled everything out...

...and unwrapped the nice brown Christmas wrapping to reveal my long-awaited new Mission!

Copper hilt, green theme, carver stag, hammermarks... sweet...

And, of course, a nice Warlander sheath!

I'm a happy man. Even happier that it got here before we leave for Christmas; we're flying out tomorrow.

Oh, it will be. I'm already planning a rehandle once the bank account gets itself back up to scratch.

I was very excited opening it up; even though I picked the options, it was fun not to know EXACTLY what it would look like.

These blades are really wide. Similar to my Narwhal SW Bowie.
Oh one more thing, James did a great job keeping just a hint of the natural end on the Musk Ox handle. Whether intened or not, it's a great look.

It was intentional I have one on a Michigan knife that I have carried for years that is the same.
Musk-ox, border patrol & natural end. Stole that natural end look from the Captain way back.

On the way from BMK. Well, it will be on the way when Amy finishes the sheath. I bought a springbok horn a while back for no particular reason. Recently, I decided it would make a cool knife handle. Trying to think where to start here. A week or so after Blade, this fossilized sperm whale tooth just happened to land. If I were going to describe it; as big as a sweet potato.
Ok, here we go, take that potato, stabilize it, and marry it to a 14" Gladius Blade along with a copper FCH.
Waiting on Mudbone to finish it off. It will not disappoint.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 12/07/18 04:49 PM

Well not exactly new but new to me. Christmas came early this year thanks to Miles.
Guthook elk cleaver, 7" hammer marked blade, copper hilt, fiber and copper spacers, copper pinned hippo tooth. Sheath by Mudbone; who else could pull this off? James made about 6 of these with various handles going back 5 years ago or so.
Second is a sub-hilt recurve fighter, 11 1/2" hammer marked blade, nickel silver hilts, fiber and metal spacers, artifact walrus handle. And another Mudbone masterpiece with hand carved arrowhead.
It's perfectly balanced for such a long blade. Well done James and Mud.

I have only ever (actually) cleaned, gutted and dressed-out 2 bull elk & 1 cow...but a "gut hook"? Man: I wasn't "fishing" for them...I shot the sons-a-bitches! What purpose does the gut hook hold in processing an elk?
Just curious, Capt. Chris

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 12/08/18 11:44 AM

I can see an application whereas the blade would be inverted and this cutout would serve well for running the length of the belly..."without" piercing into the intestine & guts to prepare for animal for butchering, similar to a "gut blade". That "has" to be the explanation. I have used gut blades by several makers, including "Bubba-Blades" (Warren Glover, custom maker from Georgia) making me one of my own design, and Boker Treebrand and a combo folder.
Best, Capt. Chris

Here's a BMK Woodcraft just back from Mudbone's magic.
Grant sent these pics today and we are just blown away with Mudbone's costal tribal artwork inspired by the fossil walrus net weight handle. What's not to like about this package it's got everything; a great hammermarked blade, musk ox spacer, artifact walrus handle, and of course the Mud artwork. Also, can't leave out Miss Teresa's latigo braided edge.
Thanks all around to BMK and Roger Mudbone Jones.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 12/21/18 12:31 AM

First let me say Merry Christmas Ken and so very best to you.
The holes in the hands is nothing biblical. I'm going to try to paraphrase in Mudbone speaking as follows.
"The reason why Mudbone has holes in his hands is so stuff can flow through his hands, otherwise you guys wouldn't have anything. He would get everything."
Some of this originated earlier in life during his trapping days. Sort of Indian lore, he's a backwoods guy in fact a NYS Adirondacks trapper. There's alot more explatives to his life's story but I don't have enough time to explain here. Call him sometime when you have 2 hours to kill and you can get the whole story.
He's a one off a kind for sure and a good man. He makes me laugh and we do that together.
If you speak with him, say he's a heck of a guy for 105 years old.
That will add another hour to the conversation. LOL.

I like that "tall" tanto & the small one in the cattail sheath best, what are the dimensions on those?
That tanto looks like it could be a small cleaver as well.
That small hilt on the "everything knife" is just cool, great spacer transition.
That zebra ebony & Ivory looks familiar........I have a zebra sheath that goes with the knife same as yours.

Bro

Quick pic, sorry for the crappy photo. These are the three you inquired about.
The stag stubby is fat blade at 4" long but 2 7/8" wide.
You're right about the Tanto, has a straight cleaver edge. If I didn't know better I'd say Mudbone carved that sheath but it's a Mosher all right. I don't recall Jack doing anything like that before. Very cool sheath.
And yes, according to James this knife, yours, Kevin's and about 9 others were "Project Zebra". For those not familiar, ebony and ivory handles, Mosher sheaths with Zebra inlays. I don't think any two were alike. I always liked the pin-lock sheath on this sheath. Horizontal carry if I recall correctly?
So I'd say mine is a Woodcraft style blade.
I think Kevin's was a large Bird and Trout but I can't find any pictures. When it was offered as part of the deal, I was kind of stunned. I thought only a few were made. I passed on the project back in 2012 I believe. Happy to get one now.

Post ammended to include comments that the Shovel Dagger is a Mudbone blade shape. James forged these as a tribute to Mud as I was told.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 06/11/19 08:53 PM

So I have to admit I had alot of information wrong. Going back through text messages with Grant alot of the verbiage was incorrect.
So to clarify; here's two knives similar shape. The white fossil handle was posted earlier in this thread. As confirmed by James it's called the "Appalachian Assassin" named by respect for a Mudbone blade made years ago.
The term "shovel dagger" is incorrect and is lost in translation with text messages and I apologize for the bad.
So clearly these two blades are quite different and I didn't realize that at the time.
Ace Of Spades comes to mind.

A few more early Montana knives, Pre-BMK logo stamp.
First one is another first run of 10 knives and stamped 10 on back side. Little double edged dagger, stag, Mosher hi-ride with waistband clip.
And a couple of hippo tooth handled skinners
in Mosher pouch sheaths. I really like the deep wide choils on these two knives.

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 08/08/19 02:37 PM

Man, there are some *crazy nice* knives in this thread. Fantastic works of art.

Here’s a little trout and bird knife I picked up years ago. My son has another one just like it - almost its twin. He never goes hunting or fishing without it. He usually has a rugged looking big orange handle folder in his kit, with gut hook and saw blade, but he always has the Treeman on his belt. The little 3 ¾” blade does almost everything he needs when field dressing. He keeps it in his car the rest of the year. Razor sharp and takes an edge with ease – a simple honing now and then on a kitchen steel will keep it going for months. These knives hold their edge well.

And the little Mosher sheaths are fantastic for everyday carry or throwing in a tackle box or car seat cubby. Especially thick and tough, protect the knives well, but aren’t too heavy. These little knives, in their sheaths, give a natural impression of a “basic tool.”

With its similar top bevel and overall profile, it compares favorably with a Randall #7-4 ½, coming in about 1 1/8” shorter in OAL. But of course, it’s convex ground.

Senior or not Gary, I think that knife is perfect. I'm also a sucker for the Mosher sheaths and a well made sub 4" blade.

Warren- that brass back is incredible. I'm pretty sure we cranked that one out right about the time I'd started here as I remember peening the brass for one before it was fixed to the blade. It could have been a different build, but we've done so few of these (I wouldn't think more than five, since James started BMK in 2011). I'm definitely going to need that one to shoot for the coffee table book, amigo! Heck- I may just need your entire collection.

I'm continually astounded at the traction of this thread.... almost 550,000 views?!?! Amazing.

These were all made by JR alone. Some of my recent knives from the collection needed his input as some questions came up.

Thanks, that helps a lot. More like individual use rather than carving/serving.
Posted by: pappy19

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 09/05/19 04:09 PM

Exactly, only used for individual but the fork has had lots of "turning" duties as well. The knife is so sharp, that it also gets extended duties as well. But the best use is for cutting and eating a medium rare cowboy cut prime ribeye. That being said, I am sure that BMK would make you a similar looking set for carving/serving.

A couple of early Montana knives. That little guy is just a little larger than a pocket size and loaded; FWI handle, musk ox center spacer,N/S hilt, top edge sharpened, old Cris stamp, in a Mosher pouch.

Maybe not "new and on the way" but old knives seem to be a current theme of this conversation .While hunting with James this last weekend, I opened the glove box of his truck to this oldie. Turns out it was a first-year knife that he'd recently "found" in one of his gear bags and decided would be a proper truck knife. Hard to argue!

Just got off the phone with Grant. He’s sending these 3 off to me tomorrow. Many thanks to Grant and James — great job guys! I couldn’t be more pleased...
Not sure if these will post as attachments or photos. If they don’t appear as photos, can someone please help?

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 10/28/19 05:21 PM

Here's a darlin' of a knife. Knife was recently offered for sale here by another forum member. Grant said these "Grouse and Trout's" were a special grind; about 50 knives done for one customer about 5 years ago. The sheath was not original, so off to Mudbone for a no loop pocket sheath. Grouse feathers and a trout fly.
Just perfect!

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 01/06/20 04:18 PM

As long as it doesn't throw the balance way off, especially the butt cap.
Posted by: nate-dogg

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 01/06/20 04:21 PM

It's a bit handle heavy, but not too much. Still very comfortable. Better that than blade heavy.
Posted by: W Polidori

Re: New and on the way from Behring Made - 01/06/20 04:55 PM

It's been a topic discussed before. There's times when you need to have some back weight, others not so much. Decorative butt plates and thinned out caps are better on small knives. Sometimes natural is even better depending on how it's finished off. Medallions, compass, rounded.

White tail stag was used instead of the usual sambar Stag. Along with nickel hilt, leather, aluminum, red,and copper spacers.
