Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 - 02/20/17 06:13 PM

Well fellas- after a call from Chief today, and several jabs from throughout this forum (still healing), and numerous hints from elsewheres...... it is time to get build number two live.

A few of you have picked up the conversation from the last thread, but for organization I'd like to start a new one for the new build.

Over the course of the next few days, let's all start throwing our ideas into the hat. I've heard talks of a Chute, Big Ass Camper, among a few others. With those two accounted for, let's hear your thoughts!

Re: Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 - 02/20/17 06:32 PM

I stick with my recommendation from the old thread, let's build a hunter/skinner. I could be persuaded into a chute knife, always liked the design, but a big dollar BAC would be cost prohibitive...at least for me.

Chute was my call from the get-go. Small or large don't matter to me; the blade is bad-ass. Let me add you'll thank me later.

Re: Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 - 02/20/17 08:38 PM

Chute.

I won't be taking a number; I already got lucky on the Woodpecker Lips RMK build. But I'm along for the ride anyway.

Re: Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 - 02/20/17 10:44 PM

I like the shorter/taller blade on this recurve camp 8 & 1/2 inch blade. Not a artifact fan.
I like the handle (crows beak) style on this longer recurve camp but the blade isn't tall enough for my tastes.

Re: Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 - 02/21/17 08:39 AM

I don't knw how well "2" builds, at one time, will work out but I'm in. For me, having field-tested one this past hunting season, I'd like to see a nicely-optioned Woodcraft! I have actually "used" large knives, in the field, before and find then a superior pain in the ass!
For actual game processing...of any type, except elephant-sized game, a 6-7" knife would be maximum. 4-5" is a more practical and friendly blade length for such purpose.
Fighter/survival? I would still opt for a 7" maximum. Ya' gotta' carry the damned thing folks! Anything larger/longer is "another" pain in the ass"! It all depends on your purpose I suppose.
Now: If we're building something just to look at and get "oohs & aahs" over, let's decide up front and move on from there. I love artifacts, even as a practical handle but it bumps the price considerably.
A "Scagel-styled" handle would be great also! Cannot wait to see which direction this build takes. I know, if Chief runs it, it will be..."just short" of an Excalibur!
Best, Capt. Chris
PS: My favorite "James' Gang" Scagel handled knife...CCS

I would like to do a "camp set" -- knife and hatchet. But, I'm in regardless.

Re: Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 - 02/21/17 10:52 AM

mmm, recurve.
mmm, BAC.
mmm, small skinner.

I'm in, regardless.

Re: Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 - 02/21/17 03:28 PM

Lots of excellent ideas already being discussed. I could go for...

1. Chute knife.
2. Skinner.
-Either would be cool, though I'd prefer a relatively smaller (maybe 5" or so) blade rather than a BA blade.
3. I also like Jim's idea of a camp set with matching knife and hatchet.

Define the characteristics of a survival knife?
Not being my usual pain in the ass self, curious what ya'll feel needs to be part of a knife to be considered a survival knife?

Isn't it traditionally a sawback and a hollow handle filled with magic stuff?

I've always felt any knife is a survival knife if you've got survival skills. If you don't, no hollow handle will let you thrive in the woods, and 3 inches of sawteeth aren't going to be felling any trees.

So, for me? A Model 5 and a hatchet are what I bring to the woods, so I guess I'd be in favor of a set like that.
Posted by: pappy19

Re: Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 - 02/21/17 10:26 PM

A Model 5 design and a hatchet would be the ultimate setup for almost any situation.

Just a wild thought here. The Captain has a build going on now too. Perhaps we could build a companion piece not saying if its a knife, could be something else "but" maybe link the builds together.
If I'm crazy just say so, just an idea.

Gracious Tom... simply top-shelf... that's the nicest matching walrus set I've seen!

I'm game for a chute build.

The BMK build after this one could always play-off the current RMK build. Seems doubtful the same person would win both to arrive at a matching pair.

Speaking of length. Tom how long is that hatchet overall?
And what is the blade length of the chute next to it.

-5 1/2” Hammermark Chute, blued
-forward curved steel guard, blued
-no sub-hilt

Next let’s talk spacers. I’ll try to include as many options as possible, but of course there will be a write-in opportunity. At this point, please start thinking forward to handle materials you want to pair this spacer theme up with. I was going to initiate the vote on both spacers and handle but I don’t want to start confuse Chief with too many options at once.

Spacer Primary:
1 Maroon
2 Black
3 Green
4 Blue
5 White
6 Yellow
7 Write-In

Metallic Spacer Accents (feel free to include multiple as we often do)

BB Fossil Walrus
CC Hippo
DD Giraffe
EE Pinecone (with Captain’s approval)
FF Cocobolo
GG Ironwood
HH Walnut

Re: Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 - 03/09/17 11:35 AM

I'm finding it difficult to visualize and configure a complimentary spacer array without knowing the material or color of the knife handle.

Are we thinking about a light (or lighter) colored handle material, to contrast the darker blade and hilt? Something like FWI, oosic, musk ox or hippo tooth? If so, we may wish to consider a spacer array which would enhance the transition from the darker blade/hilt color to lighter handle color. Possibly a blue/copper or aluminum theme with a hippo, giraffe or pinecone accent spacer. Green/brass or maroon/brass or aluminum themes would probably work equally well.

Or are we considering an all-dark design...a night-fighter or stealth mode blade? If so, we may wish to consider all dark spacers with maybe a subtle metallic spacer accent. Possibly a black or dark blue spacer theme with a copper or aluminum metallic accent and some dark wood (ironwood, ebony, walnut) or buffalo horn as the accent spacer.

Or we could go with a dark/light theme and transition from dark (blade/hilt) to light (black and white spacers with an aluminum or copper accent and a FWI, oosic, musk ox, or bighorn sheep accent spacer) and back to dark (buffalo horn handle with blued steel butt cap).

I think that I prefer the dark-light-dark design theme of the knife best and so I will vote for:

-Spacer Primary: 2 (black)& 5 (white)
-Metallic Spacer Accents: C (Copper)
-Other Accent Spacers: BB (FWI)

Re: Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 - 03/09/17 02:19 PM

Come into the light!

Hippo gives the bleached white contrast against the blued hilt & blade; agree with the blue and aluminum or brass! Chief thinks it should have a butt plate; i am good with that.

Just sayin'

A buttplate should not be a problem, so long as there is no thonghole. If I don't see any new votes before the end of the day I'll open it up for handle material voting over the weekend. In the future handle material vote will come before spacer- sorry to have thrown anyone for a loop. A wise man once told me (many times) "it's your world, I'm just playing in it" and I couldn't agree more so however you fellas want the build to go is fine with me. Heck, we could even start with handle material next time before we even get to the blade shape.

Regardless, let's finalize these spacers and get this one a cranking. If we can get it all together by next week this one could possibly be in the next forge.

Re: Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 - 03/10/17 04:29 PM

Alright, so I went ahead and tallied each mention of each variable, though I recognize that many of these mentions reflected different combos, counting each suggested combo would have spread the votes out too far. Instead, here is what I suggest from the averages.

Black & blue spacer theme (maybe with one or two white spacers?) along with a hippo tooth spacer tastefully accented with both copper and aluminum. Black had 4 votes, blue had 3; hippo had 5 (followed by 2 for walrus) and both aluminum and copper were mentioned 6 times where brass only twice.

Does anyone disagree? With what we're putting together thus far this is a truly knock-out combo.

I'll let vetos and/or suggestions ring over the weekend. Along with your comments, please start naming handle materials you want to see and we'll vote on the 3 most mentioned starting Monday.

Here's a shot of the color scheme and a few similar spacers we've done with black, blue, musk ox and aluminum.

Re: Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 - 03/10/17 05:23 PM

That's a knockout spacer combo, with the musk ox. I'd be inclined to vote for that!
Posted by: Tracer

Re: Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 - 03/10/17 06:05 PM

I like the blue with the musk ox too, but I feel like it might look a little bit abrupt if we go with a handle materia thatl isn't black. Especially with the guard being blued.

Just something to think about. Otherwise, I'm with Wally: those two example knives look great.

I think (LOL) that they were talking about the hippo as a spacer.
It got put on to show color contrast.
Bluish FWI is a cool idea as well......might be hard to come by?

Re: Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 - 03/11/17 09:39 PM

Hippo tooth handle would be awesome.

If we're just using hippo tooth as a spacer with the blue and/or black, a dark colored handle would look killer. How about bison horn?
Posted by: GCTom41

Re: Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 - 03/12/17 08:05 AM

I am all in for the Hippo tooth (no butt plate with that tooth-sorry Chief) as the handle the spacer combo is killer and maybe a blue FWI (great idea Cap) or blue Giraffe bone!

Re: Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 - 03/13/17 12:40 PM

We could easily do a full hippo handle if you'd like. We can source a straighter tooth, or the curved carver if that's preferred. However, I do think for the sake of contrast the just a spacer would be ideal, moving with a darker handle. I'm not going to say bluish FWI isn't doable, but it will definitely increase lead time as we'll have to do some searching. Giraffe would be a quick substitute, but again, I personally think hippo in the middle would be awesome. We could go with ebony, or ironwood for the handle, buffalo (fluted or not), maybe a blasted finish micarta?

So we have the hammer marked Chutte blade with gun blued hilt to match. Hammer marked blade with a couple of skulls to really set it off!

Blue spacers and copper surround an AMAZING piece of fossil, stained blue. This piece has been in the shop longer than Grant has, and I gotta say... using it here was a perfect call!

And of course the LARGE Copper pinned, Hippo tooth handle!!

We can go 1-50 if I've excluded someone's "lucky" number.....?

Give me number 12, if still open, please.

Or age. Would have to go higher for me on that one.

So, instead, I will take lucky # 17.

Lap 2 of the BMK Forum Build 500 is mostly complete. We had great input all throughout this build and managed to build a VERY cool lookin knife. GREAT job fella's!!! cool

All that is left is for the winner to choose his leather option.

Were it mine the choice is crystal clear... this would be 1 Muddy A$$$$ knife!!!!

Congrats Jim E !

Sharpi, even though this one did pass by quick, I feel 100% safe saying the gang will build you one as identical as possible, as quick as possible. With a Randall build, you probably couldn't get it done. Never hurt to ask!

If anybody thinks we should have a do-over on the drawing, that's okay by me. Hell, I'm not even sure yet whether I can afford to buy it.

If any of you gents would like one, just let me know.
