1 more that we built together.
Ebony with ivory, in what I call my "Riders Sheath". Made to be warn on the back of your belt. Has a keeper pin to ensure that it stays in the sheath.

That was my favorite knife in the Zebra series. Keep that thought on that sheath. We need to do that again, that was slick.!

Say Chief look familiar? It was your Musk Ox now re-handled on a Randall 25 blade. For a one-off this came out pretty darn good IMO.

Yeah when I gave James & Grant the page turner & James said that will go good on the 27 I really was like ....I don't know?
But fortunately James was like relax I got this you'll see.

Yeah, they put my last one in Warlander; I'm really happy with it, but I told them to go with a more utilitarian vibe. I'm not big into fancy leatherwork, and the sticker already has a belt sheath; I told them to go with a clip.

I've seen a lot of Mudbone work; incredible stuff.

Just completed this morning and in the mail. Pics courtesy of Grant. Here's a Randall 1-7 S with sawteeth rescued from the dead with a broken tang. This is super bad-azz facelift. Black Ceracote blade, copper S hilt and sub-hilt, black micarta center spacer, copper and black thin fiber spacers, and how cool is a pinned Cooper Firearms gray gunstock handle complete with Behring Made medallion? I'm going to marry this one to a black Sullivan's "C" sheath. Something tells me there will be more of these gunstock rehandles done soon.

Re: Re-Handled Knives - 05/18/17 06:05 PM

I bought a Randall years ago and always thought it was a walnut handled small 26 pathfinder. Turns out the blade blank was stolen from the shop and finished elsewhere. I had Behring Made Knives re-handle it with fossilized walrus ivory donated by Warren Polidori. Some suggestions from me, and James' skills created this knife.

Re: Re-Handled Knives - 05/18/17 06:33 PM

Earlier in this thread I posted a re-handled Randall 1-7, copper S hilt and sub hilt, black ceracoat finish with a Cooper Firearms gunstock handle. I sent the knife to Mudbone along with a cardboard mock-up of a custom sheath with a pivoting belt loop. Had this idea for a long time and just had to try it. Sitting in a car or a truck with a 7" blade just doesn't work; until now. Mudbone did a fantastic job. Got to give Grant credit for the grey elephant inlay, just makes that handle pop! I wore this rig Friday at Blade, it got a lot of ooohs and ahhhs.

I really like the idea of the swivel, make a lot of sense. Even a high ride isn't as comfortable as a swivel sitting in your rig. I want one.

Re: Re-Handled Knives - 06/09/17 11:15 PM

I have a real old #10-5 that I bought back in 1975, has my etched name and worn out rosewood handle. I am thinking of Behring replacement stag slabs,a finger guard, and Mudbone swivel sheath. Heck of a fishing outfit.

Every once in a while I see a fishing combo rig show up with pliers and a model 10. I'm thinking Greg Gutcher made those up.

Re: Re-Handled Knives - 06/10/17 09:34 AM

Yes, I have one of those rigs, although I doubt that I would ever use it. Brings me to an idea to have the James Gang redo my old #10 and match it with my Abel plyers ( the Randall of all plyers) into a set with a swivel sheath. What do you think?

Very clever there Warren. I better get one made before your patent is approved. ;-) Seriously, very good idea.

Re: Re-Handled Knives - 06/12/17 10:41 AM

Warren,

Great re-imagining of the knife (somehow, simply calling it a 're-handle' doesn't do it justice)!

Love the sheath design, the hand-tooling and the elephant inlay.

Does the bolt holding the swivel section to the sheath contact the knife handle when the knife is sheathed?

Any concerns about the bolt abrading the knife handle as the sheath pivots?

Here is the result of my rehandle on my 1976 Model 10-5 along with a new sheath and cleanup on an older Merle Seguine that did not have a sheath. As it turned out, The James Gang did the rehandle so that it still fit the original Johnson sheath. Therefore, I took Grant's suggestion to leave it alone and use my Abel as is. I am very pleased with the outcome.

I actually have this rehandle Model 10-5 in my hand today, and it's difficult to explain how well it fits, unreal. Not only is the stag over the top, but the comfort feeling is super. BMK also cut the top of the hilt to make the thumb notches usable. If you have an old Model 10, you might consider a new handle from BMK.

Not just Kits, sometimes people just know that they have a cool handle material for RMK to put on.
Then they get it & it's not like they thought it would be.
Or it's not stabilized as good as the person who sold it said it was.
It cracks.....the list goes on.
Or like me just wanting copper furniture & a handle material that isn't available on a RMK.

Re: Re-Handled Knives - 04/11/19 01:21 PM

I just now am getting un-packed from the Marathon that is: TULSA! I hope you folks will enjoy a splendid example of a WWII rendition of a brand new RMK Model #4-6"! BMK outdid themselves with this package...to include: Blued steel blade, along with bluing the custom steel hilt and crows beak butt cap...& the leather? Well: It speaks for itself!
I did not order custom leather, thinking that the Model A sheath shown here would have been what these old war horses would have come with originally. While some artistic license has been used (and quite well) I think you can appreciate this fine piece. I have just posted it to my website.
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Re: Re-Handled Knives - 04/11/19 08:18 PM

That is a "swell" treatment (using an old-fashioned term for "neat").

And I especially like the clarity of the RMK trademark.

Those guys in Montana know something about knives! And they can do just about anything from what I have seen.

Sadly to say that is the last project I have for rehandled knives for now.

Ralph & Kacoo......was bought by Piccadilly, food is bad now.
They finally closed down the original Don's Seafood this last flood got them.
They have 3-5 spots in LA. now......it's the kids with the original recipes now.
Fleur De Lis Pizza is still going & still awesome.
Tonys seafood is still going strong.

As for slicing pickles, hasn't yet, but boiled 120 lbs. of mudbugs this weekend & it cut up a lot of stuff. Onions, garlic, mushrooms, sausage, chicken, potatoes, corn, green beans.
Butterflied a 150ish big shrimp for some angels on horseback.
That's when you butterfly a 12-15 count shrimp stuff in a oyster & wrap it in bacon batter it then deep fry it.

Those are pretty good knives! but which is the best knife in all the categories like stilleto, butterfly, OTF etc... just wondering what people think about it!
Posted by: Chief

Re: Re-Handled Knives - 06/19/19 07:35 PM

I buy BMK for stilettos, daggers, boot knife you can decide how wide, how long, if you want the blade edge to go all the way to the hilt......
I don't have the patience or desire to use a butterfly handle, on OTFs I've carried most brands & unless your going to pay a custom maker the blade just gets loose when it's out, I mean it has a wow factor but it just is to loose after it's open & for use.
For a good pocket knife I like pro-tech, the mechanism is real strong & very solid when open, holds a good edge.

Walker,
Thank you.
The Bear Bowie is desert ironwood with copper hilt & sub-hilt. The large spacer is walrus ivory; the remaining spacers are black micarta and copper.
The 4-6 Fighters have original brass hilts with added brass crow’s beak butt caps and misc. spacer stacks, mostly leather. One of the handles is walrus ivory and the other is musk ox.

Paint em.....but have a professional do the painting.
Posted by: LarryWW1246

Re: Re-Handled Knives - 04/19/20 05:03 PM

Wayne--

Maybe the color change is superficial.

Maybe try polishing with Flitz and a small section to see if it brings the color back.

And if that works, apply Ren Wax to protect it from atmospheric exposure--just in case that is the cause of the color change.

If it is due to exposure to light, maybe somebody here has some experience and can confirm it. Often ultraviolet light will cause color change.

Re: Re-Handled Knives - 04/20/20 11:11 AM

Thank you both for the advise.
I had already tried Semichrome and the Rennaisanse wax and it brought it back, somewhat but no where near the way it was when I first had purchased it.

I sent an email to James and will see what he has to say.

That little knife is "just right" and is with me always.

Re: Re-Handled Knives - 04/20/20 01:24 PM

I don't blame BMK on this happening. I have a handful of handle material that was purchased by good customers (some are on this very forum) and it was "represented" as yellow or even the "original" Westinghouse "Old Yeller". I'll shoot a quick pick of one such piece. Be careful who you buy stuff from when it comes to these type of "claims".
Caveat Emptor,
Capt. Chris
PS: This material was sold to Doug54 (I think that is his Forum Name) by KENSTYX from Ebay fame...
Posted by: Eric

Re: Re-Handled Knives - 04/20/20 01:33 PM

I never contacted BMK about the color change. I never thought it was their issue. I had a M7 bayonet done as well by a fellow Michigander, it remains as it did 10 years ago when I had it done. BMK remains my go to for re-handled knives.
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Re-Handled Knives - 04/20/20 01:48 PM

Eric,
I hope you didn't think I was accusing you of branding any blame on BMK. I was just saying that "I" don't blame them for the ones they made for "me". The "Blame" should fall on the seller who mis-represents the product.

It was stored in my "gun Locker" no sun, nothing but age....I do not know what it would have done if in the sun/lighted condition....and...yes the "now color" is not objectionable....

both sides are the same

I bought that Net Weight at Blade 4 or 5 years ago to do a re-handle on my leather handled Bowles Skinner. James felt it would overpower the Skinner and said it would look better on the TC. Trust in James! He has some great Dall Sheep handle material.

Re: Re-Handled Knives - 05/28/21 05:39 AM

But if you're looking for a quick project, restoring an old knife is really worthwhile. Rust can be removed, handles can be restored or replaced, and as long as there is life left in the blade, you can have a razor sharp knife that will make chopping and cooking at least 3 times as fun.
