Couple of new fixed blades - 05/10/17 11:42 AM

Hi guys
here are a couple of new fixed blades I picked up recently and finally had time to photograph and post
first is a Dozier modified personal D2, ironwood hollow ground 3 inch blade. I had viewed this for quite a while and finally pulled the trigger.
The second is a Spyderco Rock Salt limited H1 with the orange handle. If you have seen my Jeep you know I like orange. I think the Spyderco will make a good camp knife

I have both, and you will like both. The H1 is a bit soft as with typical stainless AUS-6 or 8, but bulletproof/unbreakable and carefree/totally rustproof, perfect for stashing, and easily touched up to very fine edge.

The beautiful Dozier will just cut and cut when others fall by the wayside. Does not take a fine edge, but that probably why it just keeps cutting with all those exposed ragged carbides at the edge. With care, staying off bone and out of hide, 4-5 deer before touchup.

D-2 steel, when hollow ground, will last through many deer and will do an entire elk. I have a Bud Tracy D-2 Backpacker model that I once skinned a whole black bear without sharpening. A real feat on a bear, very tough hide.

Thanks Lofty and Pap
I have a couple of other knives with D-2, it is a good steel for game processing

Bob pretty much wrote the book on D2, considered by most as entirely unsuited to knives until Bob did his thing.

He does no magic to it, neither does his step-son Dan who runs that shop and grinds every knife himself. It is simply precision not approached by most, where the knives from that shop will test within a few tenths of 60.5 Rc every time.

As a matter of fact, each batch of steel is tested for response, and is not used if it does not hit that mark.

Yessir, that knife will cut.
