Any interest in a "By-God" serious hunting knife b - 01/15/23 10:08 AM

My neck's swollen up and I'm ready to pee in a scrape! OK: Rut usually starts at my Bama retreat in a week's time...or at least the "hot-n-heavy" rut does. I'm fixin' to head on up next Friday.
All this "fixin" has got me thinking: Do we have any real hunters and would they (you) be interested in building a hunting knife? (Randall...of course)?
What say you?
Stay Sharp,
Capt. Chris

Capt be careful on your hunts. Those deer goes nuts during the rut. You know they can't think no farther than their rutters during the rut. oldguy

Re: Any interest in a "By-God" serious hunting knife b - 01/16/23 05:05 PM

There are several small models that are adequate for most hunting, maybe not so much for camp chores, heavy cutting.

Think about the knives on page 11 in the catalogue, and also Model 26 Pathfinder, and Model 21 Little Game.

And in the Non-Catalogue list: Pathfinder, Alaskan Skinner, Old Style Bird and Trout, Denmark Special, and the GTR Special.

25-5 is a great hunting knife, in my opinion. Love mine. Might have to try a 25-6 one-day, but I've read it's too much of a good thing?

I have a few knives that are close in size to a 26 and that model, I think, would be more build friendly than a 25?

11's are meh as far as I'm concerned, but I bet I'd love it if I used one.

A model 3-6 is what I have my eye on these days.

Re: Any interest in a "By-God" serious hunting knife b - 01/17/23 01:22 PM

Trying to nail down thinking and direction (never easy for me) in conceiving of our
“By-GOD serious hunting knife…..preferred” Randall model for this Build. This, to me anyway, eliminates one of my favorite hunting users, #28, as the “build” part is pretty much over as soon as ya’ start…. outstanding knife with zero/few options. A few other models are similar in that regard.
I’m thinking “hunting” as being different from “camp-chore” blades and would also eliminate the wonderful Randalls that do extremely well digging foxholes, chopping trees and splitting kindling. Even though I know that the #12-9, 14 grind can do all of these tasks very well and still field dress squirrels and skin out whitetail I’d eliminate a few other models similar to the 12-9 in size as not being in my “preferred” group of “By-GOD serious hunting” knives.
THE Randall that I’m certain that I’ve carried and used the most from the first Deer/Turkey fall season and Spring Gobbler season that I bought it from Perry Miller, AND every season since, is my #8, old style. It has been THE perfect (“preferred”?) knife to field dress, skin and completely process so many whitetails and gobblers every year since. Not to mention dove, ducks, salt and fresh water fish AND day-2-day chores between seasons and adventures as I just love the feel of this stag handled knife in my hand. AND the option of the top of the blade being sharp as hell. Plus carrying it day-2-day means I’m always carrying around a buncha’ campfire stories on my belt.
I even gifted an additional one of these to my then 12yr. old son to use (& IF) he used it to field dress his first buck. Carried it secretly in my pack for 2 years (3rd season) before the opportunity presented itself. Fifteen years ago now.
SOoooo, #8, Old Style, SS, nice, popcorny Stag, TN, Single Hilt, Thong would make my “preferred, by-God, serious hunting knife” to Build.

I have (intentionally) used almost every RMK made on field work...just-cause. Some worked better than others but still a lot of choices would be a matter of personal taste.
Here's a brief review and "possibles" to think about. Duke has already expounded on RMK's #8. Whether old or new style, both T&B's work quite well. Other 3/16" stock knives perform admirably, again as Duke mentions, the #28-4 1/2" just to add one to the mix.
Rob wants a Model #26-4", Pathfinder, and they need to be in the discussion...4 sure. Here's a couple of the "above" to aid in your "visual" thought process....

Ward Gay #20 is a nice setup as well.

I think it's the least-configurable knife you can pick, so not a strong candidate for a build-by-committee.

Rob--

You are right about some of the standard models. Not much room for customization on various ones.

I like the Model 8 configuration offered by Ken.

The only thing I would change would be light ambi finger grooves depending on the stag...I hate to see huge hunks of stag stuck onto petite blades.

If the stag is too large, then the Cattleman treatment could help...and that is only offered on the Stanaback Special...which is a good candidate for the build.

Apparently...there is "some" interest for this build...not a lot, but "some"? I'm rather surprised at the majority seeming to want a 3/16" stock knife for a "BY-GOD-SERIOUS" hunting knife as it falls way short on black or brown bear, elk, etc...and big boar hogs..."BUT"...It's your build.
How 'bout this: Pic a couple of blade stocks from both widths and we'll "whittle"?
Sound good to you?
Let's hear from you,

Re: Any interest in a "By-God" serious hunting knife b - 01/19/23 02:23 PM

I try to not be long winded BUT it sometimes just seems I “have a lot to say,” soooo…..
I do tend to agree with Larry re: big chunks of stag with smallish blades…..they just don’t match up. I do love slab sides of stag however, and especially on Cattleman and Stan. Sp, (in fact sent ya’ an email recently Cap. re: possibly ordering one of your Specials). It’s difficult for me to think about carrying “too much” knife on my belt, but do pretty much always have a larger “Camp” (#15 or #18) and/or “Skinner” (#20) and/or small “hatchet” in my pack. Field dressing game in my life thus far has only added one blackie on top of the mountain of whitetails and realistically at this point I don’t see any Brownies, Moose, polar bear or other “big game” being added to the pile even though VA stocking Elk in Southwest VA is seeming more successful than I expected. I still don’t see it being (&HOPE it will NOT) be as successful as their wild Turkey stocking has become. The other small folder I’ve carried in my pocket for over 45+ years is my Case, 3 blade Stockman, given to me by my dad, and with which I completely field dressed, suitable for dragging over a mountain mile, the 2nd buck I ever took. Ever since then that knife has always cut first on each deer to remove and place into ziplocks the swollen, dripping tarsal glands so as to not taint the meat.
So, while I absolutely do not mind participating in (&/or winning) a Build for a BIG,
“By-GOD Serious-Ass Hunting” knife, I’d like to narrow it down to a do whatever you want, slab-sided Stanaback Special as I’m certain it’ll do everything I’ve done quite well and ALSO be more than satisfactory for going places I’ve yet to be.
And I really am TRYING to be less long winded.

Hey Captain,

Your Nordic Special looks good too.

For a bigger knife: I still hunt bears, moose, along with an occasional elk. I typically use my 23 standard, but have used my 4-6 standard, my A.G Russel 11 and my 3-6 stag. I’ll use my 14 or a hatchet to split the ribs. For wild bison, I used my 23, 4-6, and an ax.

My #2 son used his 25 and an 18 on his moose and an elk this last season.

One of the larger 11s, a big 19, a 20, and even a Sergeant could be good too.

Stanaback Special history per Capt. Chris...

Knife of the Week Stanaback Special!!!!!!!
Posted by: JesseEgnew
Knife of the Week Stanaback Special!!!!!!! - 07/20/08 08:13 AM
This is from one of the other forums with the Capt’s permission

About mid 1980's Jeff McCartney, one of the Randall shop's key knife craftsman, had a Model #23-4 1/2" that had a slight crack in the false edge. The knife was stainless and Jeff thought that the crack was minor enough and shallow enough to make a decent knife out of this already finished "Gamemaster" without having to toss the whole thing out. What remained, after Jeff's superb customization, was a slightly shorter version (around 4") of the Model #23, with a more "bowie-styled" false edge. Actually it looked like a cross between an "old style" Trout and Bird and a Model #12-6" "Little Bear Bowie"!
Keep in mind that this Randall was made of 1/4" stock! I took one look at it and knew that it was the design I had been looking for! I struck a deal with Gary and my "Stanaback Special" was born! A lot of cool knife designs, as well as other things, come from mistakes. This knife, although not a true mistake, was no exception!! Thanks again to Jeff and Gary and, of course, Bo Randall, for making this superb Randall an exclusive to me. I can't tell you all how well it is received by folks. It just plain "works"!
As for the serial numbers, I only made 100 of these 4" specials with serial numbers, 1-100. All were leather handles and the number was etched next to the trademark. All have been long since sold out and sold for around $225.00. Those were the days, hey guys?
A few years later, when I was allowed to have 2 forgings, the 4 5/8" version was introduced. This knife had/ has the oxblood sheath with an EZE-lap sharpening steel, fitted in a leather tube pouch on the face of the sheath. This model "Stanaback", as well as the original 4" version, are still available today.
I have a serial numbered version of the 4 5/8", the "limited" which is "still available" in limited quantities. The total production of these will be 200, with well over half of them already sold and delivered. These longer specials are etched on the opposite side, a location everyone is more familiar with. They are made up with stainless steel blades, thumb notches, brass single hilt, brass and black spacers, a leather "commando-shaped" handle, and a brass butt cap, which is radiused.

I would like to thank everyone on the form for participating in these “knife of the week threads” it has been a huge success!!!
So without further a due ladies and Gentlemen may we please see some Stanaback Specials!!!!

A by God serious hunting knife, or any type, ain't 4" x 3/16" in my opinion. 14 or 15 cdt? Maybe. Sergeants model could fit the bill. Doesn't the story of the model 3 include chopping down saplings, or something of that nature? That's a serious knife to me, clear a path and process dinner ;-)

Re: Any interest in a "By-God" serious hunting knife b - 01/24/23 11:44 AM

Jerry--

Your comments bring us back to agreeing just what is a "By God" serious hunting knife.

My own thinking so far has been a knife primarily for processing game in the field and otherwise light duty as required. Not necessarily making camp, fighting off grizzlies, or even butchering the field-dressed game.

If we want to define it as being a general-purpose cutting tool, and take into account a wider range of possible chores, that would change my thinking.

Wonder what others think.

Re: Any interest in a "By-God" serious hunting knife b - 01/24/23 12:59 PM

Basically a 10-3 or a little bigger a 10-5 will fill the bill for just about anything.

Like I said before,my Old Style Model 8 has filled the bill for me for many years and if you want to go a little fancier maybe a Mini Model 27.

No need for a long thick blade. I knew of a n Alaskan Guide that used a Case folding trapper for everything from moose, bear, elk etc and had no problems.

Cutting of bones?? That is what a saw is for.

I'm Baaack! Good trip to the woods. Although I saw many deer, none with enough or big enough horns to shoot. 2 weeks I go back. Nice to see all the posts...and anyone awaiting shipping: I'll start tomorrow getting stuff out.
"By God" hunting knife means a "hunting knife", nothing more "AND"...nothing less. Those would be "other builds". Hope this helps. Bama hunting consists of (mostly) whitetails, hogs and turkey. Deer and turkey fold easily to 3/16" stock knives...."but" big hogs? Not-so-much!
Elk hunting in Northern New Mexico, etc...yield easier to 1/4" stock knives...IMO. It all depends upon your definition of your
"hunter".
I use a #3-5" and a #5-5" an aweful lot. No complaints and never seem under-gunned. My last trip out west I used a 4" Stanaback Spl. and a "Trailblazer"! (This was before it was numbered #27-5 3/4")...Again" no complaints.
Now: What do you guys want to build? Let's get it narrowed down to 3 or 4 choices and go from there.

I'm stuck on a Model 5-5" 01 steel, since it has done everything from butchering numerous elk, mule and whitetail, Trout, salmon, steelhead, grouse, and multiple camp chores, since 1975. I have used other Randall models, but my old Model 5-5", has done it the most.

Capt,
Just how large are the deer in your neck of the woods where you go??

Up north, typical size is about 180 lbs although there are many that go over 200 lbs.

A few years ago,a bowhunter harvested a 305 lbs white tailed buck from a state forest just 5 miles from me. Haul that out of the woods.....it is uphill both ways.

180-190 is a large buck where I hunt. 160-165, during the rut when they've got a lot of "running, fighting, screwing" going on...

Up north it is in the fall.

We-e-l-l...

Since Capt. Chris uses two, maybe, could we, think of a "a pair?"

And think about what each might be better suited for?

And "maybe" the option for the first person drawn to buy one or both?

Just thinking, maybe out of bounds, but it is easy to dream.

Remember the Last Hunt Build from Spring 2019? 5-inch Model 3 and Model 5. I got lucky on that one.

So "if" it were done again I would vote for a different pair.

Re: Any interest in a "By-God" serious hunting knife b - 01/26/23 06:16 PM

I wouldn't mind seeing a model 3 get built, 5 or 6 inch.

A pair, like the Capt's, would be cool but it's been done recently. Any reason not to build a model 25? A 25/26 pair could turn out nice

In all honesty,it is what you choose will be the best. That is why there are so many Models/variations.

Awrite, lemmie see, Capt. Chris, you’ve omitted the model #11’s (3/16” bunch) by NOT listing them with those other outstanding possible choices so far. You didn’t shut down the “maybe 2 like you” feelers though so I’m thinking that your SSP, just like I’ve suggested, is # 1 on the list AND, to handle all camp chores PLUS every big boned, gristled-up critter alive I’d like to throw in a #12-9” for “By GOD Hunt’n Knife” # 2……to crush pelvises, quarter anything, etc. etc. All dressed out like:
-SS,
-a special chunk of Stag,
-NS, single Hilt,
-Compass
WHOOO-WHEEE!!!
I am so ready to win these and get to packing,
BTW….the boys here (VA) are rut crazy blind from late Oct. thru early Dec. The deer too.

Re: Any interest in a "By-God" serious hunting knife b - 01/27/23 05:52 PM

Ken,
One of the many reasons I like about the old style Model 8 is how it came into being.

It was basically the design thought up by BO's friend Litch Stienman.and BO made some refinements as to what we now know as the old Model 8.

And,I could be wrong on this,it was Litch Stienman that was using a custom knife that BO purchased from him that got the ball rolling on Randall Made Knives.

Re: Any interest in a "By-God" serious hunting knife b - 01/27/23 11:23 PM

My only problem with the old style Model 8, is the reduced hilt. Too easy for your hand to slip by the reduced hilt and slice a finger. Had that happen to me in my 20's, not on a Randall, but a similar reduced hilt, and made me cautious ever since. I believe that a Model 7-4.5 has a very close blade design as the old Model 8, but has a full single hilt. Just sayin'.

Re: Any interest in a "By-God" serious hunting knife b - 01/28/23 09:36 AM

Pap,
I can see your concern about the reduced hilt but I think that thumb notches may help in reducing the tendency to slip.

Maybe if you wrap the wrist thong around your hand would prevent a slip??

Just a thought.

Re: Any interest in a "By-God" serious hunting knife b - 01/28/23 12:36 PM

Hi, the more I read the more I want them all. Since my addiction can not be satisfied in regards, to this knife I can only offer some thoughts. I think a hunting knife needs to have a skinning type blade. When I split wood or do camp chores I used my hatchet and my EDC knife. In the last 50 years I have carried a Henckels stockman and a Heckles wooden handled Skinning blade that I attached a lanyard. I dressed out a lot of game big and small with these. I'm no Nessmuk but I like his knife. I think an Alaskan # 11, a Yukon # 20 or a blade like the woodsman #28. I know nothing about grinds etcetera but I find a shorter blade handier than a longer and a waxed sheath better in the outdoors than a plain. I like a compass just in case and a lanyard for safety. Just my two cents.
That being said any knife you guys decide on is Ok with me and will be a remembrance of the friends I have found here, fondest regards, Mike

PS: When your done start thinking about a self defense knife.
Posted by: Wayne Dengler

Re: Any interest in a "By-God" serious hunting knife b - 01/29/23 09:02 AM

Mike C,
Usually, the longer the blade on a knife that a "woodsman" wears indicates the more of a green horn he is.
Three to four inches is pretty much the standard and can get most stuff taken care of.

Clearing of brush, cutting up saplings etc is much better handled by and axe,saw or Woodmans PAL...at least in my opinion.

As for self defense knife.............my advise is distance and plenty of it. Trust me on this,in a knife fight,no one walks away (if they are able to) unscathed.

Re: Any interest in a "By-God" serious hunting knife b - 01/29/23 10:54 AM

Long distance is next best thing to being there according to Ma Bell!
Top Dog, I also handle a shorter blade better. Yes, the longer blade gets you an extra inch or two away but it “slows” the flow down for me.

Re: Any interest in a "By-God" serious hunting knife b - 01/29/23 11:26 AM

Hi, when I associated with "Hard Types" they told me that when they met/trained with "feriners" (sic) they often made disparaging remarks about the "cowboys" that typically carried large Bowie style knives. I think the perfect offensive knife size maybe about the same as the Applegate-Fairbairn knife or about 6". I didn't wish to start this discussion, but only wished to point out that after a hunting knife maybe a defensive/combat/offensive knife can be discussed. When I was a LEO I was attacked with knives but was never in a real knife fight or in the Military; so I defer to others more knowledgeable than me. I did talk often with Col. Applegate and even in his old age knew his stuff, regards, Mike

Re: Any interest in a "By-God" serious hunting knife b - 01/29/23 01:50 PM

I think, at this point, we've had ample discussion as to what "we" (?) prefer. I've used Model #10-3's...up to a #5-6" on game of various sizes and shapes. No question...the most difficult was not the largest..."HOGS"! The skin if super tough and greasy to "hand-remove" once the skinning is started.
Point is? I'm not sure but a 1/4" stock knife worked best on hogs...with much less sharpening (or touching up) to do.
Whitetails, small game and birds (ducks, pheasants, dove & quail) required less "tune-ups" also and a 3/16" stock worked well. It all depends upon "what" you're hunting.
OK: Nothing is off the table as to your choice...and, as I have said many...many times: I don't care "what" we build. So let's decide, please.
I'd like each and every one of you to post your "one...preferred...choice". Not a 2nd and you can explain your "why". Afterwards we'll start whittlin'...
What Say You All?

1/4” stock meets the “By God Serious” criteria in my view and, a length of 4-1/2” hits the sweet spot that’s been discussed. So the #23 — mentioned by some earlier — gets my vote.

#14; 7&1/2” full tang, 1/4” stock,
-Bowie Clip Blade grind (chg.?), sharpened top of blade
-SS blade (nc)
-Green Micarta (nc), single-finger handle
-NS SINGLE HILT, squared-off
-TN
-Thong Hole, lined (nc)
-Waxed, No Hone Sheath
