Re: Critters in yard - 07/13/21 08:29 PM

Thanks guys

Cap, I think they were all mule deer but I can see the black in one of the tails. I don't think we have black tails here.
It is fun to see them in the yard.
I think with how dry it is here they are eating yard plants that get watered since we are not getting any rain

When I worked on the Alaska Pipeline project in 74-75, I went to the snowmobile races in North Pole on my 2 weeks off. Interesting community.

Re: Critters in yard - 07/25/21 03:16 PM

There's been a few changes since back then, but we're still a fairly small community. I came here in 83, I heard those pipeline days were pretty wild.

Re: Critters in yard - 07/25/21 10:00 PM

There's a book out written by a writer from the Fairbanks News paper that documents the basic things going on during the pipeline project, and it is totally true,100%.

I'll have to find it and give it a read.

Re: Critters in yard - 07/26/21 08:42 AM

GHD,
I could be totally wrong on this, but I had been told that not one drop of oil in the pipeline went to the US but went elsewhere, probably Japan.

Again,I could be wrong on that.

Re: Critters in yard - 07/26/21 04:07 PM

That's true, after it leaves Valdes on ships, it's shipped over seas to be refined, then we buy it back. We had a refinery here in North Pole, but they shut it down, now it just stores fuel we buy from over seas. Ain't the Gov. wonderful.

Say, what?
What an ironic turn of events.

Re: Critters in yard - 07/27/21 09:38 AM

Typical gov't program,we buy back the oil we produced.

Am I missing something here??????????

Re: Critters in yard - 07/27/21 12:51 PM

Economics enters into it.

Like salmon caught in Alaska, flash frozen, then shipped to China where they are cleaned and filleted, packaged, and shipped to the US for retail sale. China doing their part cheaper and maybe because they don't have the labor to do the quantity in Alaska or elsewhere.

Lots of things get shipped around like this, with components made in A, B, and C, shipped to X for assembly, then to Z for packaging or whatever, and then to 1-2-etc. to be sold.

Re: Critters in yard - 07/27/21 05:32 PM

The Alaska oil was traded for oil from mostly South America oil. The Alyeska group tried to run the initial pipeline through Canada to the refineries in Illinois and down to Texas, but Canada wouldn't agree. It's a matter of getting the crude to a refinery. Some did go to souther California, but I know of no time did we sell to Japan and then buy it back. It could have gotten mixed with oil from other counties and if the price dropped so profit could be made, then it's possible.

Re: Critters in yard - 08/02/21 05:49 PM

The old fungible oil trick.

Re: Critters in yard - 08/03/21 12:09 AM

If you think swapping oil from different entities is complicated, try wheeling power from various sources and cost structures. Now that is mind boggling.

Re: Critters in yard - 08/03/21 09:31 AM

Living in seclusion in the woods is sounding better each time I think about it.

No trouble with wood heat, just cut, split, stack and burn.

A friend of mine in WY,said his TV broke in '79,never bothered to have it fixed. Said he hasn't missed it one bit.

Re: Critters in yard - 09/06/21 07:21 AM

The Michigan Youth hunt starts here Sept. 22. My Grandson and I planted clover last year in preparation for this hunt. He turns 9 Sept. 14th. He came over last night to show me his new 350. My Son put a red dot scope on it to prevent Ethan from accidentally getting scoped. The clover paid off. Ethan wants this guy bad.
