Doug,

Really excellent video. That guy has some beautiful wood for gunstocks. I only got to see half the video so far but there's alot of great information shared on his entire process. Thanks for sharing.

Doug,
How long did you have to wait for that Shilo Sharps??

I heard that the wait was about two years.

I was able to get my 1874 Saddle Heavy 45/70 back in 2008 with no wait as they had it in stock.

Yours has absolutely beautiful wood!!!!

Hi Wayne—

I ordered this fairly soon after they announced they were going to start offering the model 1877–mine is around the 50th model 77 they built. I got it last year and believe it was about a 4-year wait......but it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s now a 2-year wait. They probably had to catch up on all the initial orders when it first came out.

Appreciate the compliments.

Doug,
What caliber? More than likely a 45/70? Or did you get a 45/120 so you could get thumped more???

Let us know how it does on the range.

40-65.....just for target work.

The 50-110 was supposed to be the real thumper.

Being that my Shiloh Sharps is very heavy (18 lbs),the recoil of the 45/70 is pretty much non existant.

Try the same loads in say a H&R Handy Rifle, things get interesting pretty quickly.

Re: Fancy Wood - 01/23/20 11:15 PM

I'm shooting an entirely different gun with the same cal. Bought my 50 cal.TC Hawken brand new in '76....one of 3 weapons I purchased that year to celebrate the Bicentennial....& being alive. VA had added a new early muzzleloader season for turkeys & whitetails that gave me two more weeks to live & run the woods with almost no other hunters!
I too never have understood (or felt) the "big kick" that 110 grain under 240 or 300 gr. round is supposed to bring. And I've loaded the REALLY big boys a few times......just because. BUT there ain't no more rhinos or water buff in my part of SW VA.
I admit that this incredibly balanced, beautiful tack driver is a tad heavy but it is so well balanced that never notice. AND the stories from the years...... ......aaaahhhhhh.....
Thanks.

Duke,
If you want a real treat,try touching off a 444 Marlin or 45/70 in a T/C Contender with a 14" bbl.

You will see the bull poop in the buckwheat real quick.

BP loads tend to "push" in recoil,at least in my experience. Not the sharp hit of smokeless.

The RHINOS and the CAPE BUFFALOES are "gone" in East Texas too!!!

But these new critters have had me thinking about a .45/70!

Tom:

hogillas! plural!

If you look closely, the one on top is a sow and the one on the bottom is a boar.

We are seeing more & more really big hogs!

That is a really nice hog. They haven't made it to my part of Va. yet but it is just a matter of time. I have a custom made 243 with Tiger Maple that I will try to get a pic of and post it soon it has double set Tim. triggers and all you have to do is put a shadow on the trigger and she fires. It is a Benchrest rifle.
