Smith & Wesson Model 10-8 Sale - 10/31/19 12:29 PM

Classicfirearms.com has a sale on old Model 10's from various police departments and agencies. $299 and are very nice with 90% blue. 3 screw and square butt. I received mine earlier this week and was very impressed. There is at least one YouTube test from a pistol received from Classic Firearms.

Pappy,
Police trade ins are usually great deals.

The S&W Model 10 had been the company's bread and butter gun for many years.

It has been the basic frame/foundation for many models.

Let us know how it does on the range and with what ammo.

My Model 10-8 has a tight cylinder, deep riflings and about a 2 lb trigger. Double action is smooth as well. I'll send a picture in a few minutes.

Pappy,
That looks like it has a lot of history and good "character".
I bet that it is a tack driver.

No sense it putting hot loads through the old girl. She will be just fine with a steady diet of regular ammo.

Gosh! I remember when they went for about $80. brand new. Colt Pythons were $125. and Highway Patrolmen were about $85.

I bought my Model 27 for just about $100 (used) in 1963 for about $100.

And, in boot camp, 1965, monthly pay was $35/month. Does the Model 27 sell for 3 months pay now?

And the "gas wars" were between "service stations" across the road from each other; at .18 & .20cents per gallon for regular. Too bad EVERYTHING wasn't great about the good old days......ya' know?

Bladesnbarrels,
If memory serves me correctly,my base pay in '64 was $83 and jump pay was an extra $106 a month. Combat pay was also $106. But I could be wrong.

Duke,
I remember that Good Gulf regular went for 20.9 cents a gallon.
Jiffy burgers were 15 cents and phone calls were nickel.

A box of 22 shorts went for 30 cents and a packet of what was then called Thunderbolts (27 rounds to a "chicklet type" box went for 25 cents.

Gas was only 33 cents at regular price when there was no gas wars going on! Cokes were a dime and 15 cent burgers were the norm!

You are right.
I was talking about E-1 net pay during boot camp.
After boot camp, I went to E-3 on the college program, and then off to hazardous duty pay.
I didn't draw much for the next couple of years, just enough for odds and ends. Saved enough after 4 1/2 years to buy a car and tour the country, and cover 1st year's college tution when I got out.
I do remember the $35 a month though (I had a job at over $100 a month when I went in)

BnB,
Now the pay is much better in the military and if I am not mistaken,re-enlistment bonus is $40,000!!!!

Back in the day, volunteers and draftees were treated the same, like lowly conscripts, pretty much throw away pieces of trash.

Seems that things are much better.

But this is now drifting off the main issue of this thread.

I added this period Heiser flowered holster from the 40's. Makes a nice package with the elk horn grips.

Thanks guys. I've had the Heiser holster for 20 years, and tried to sell it on this forum a few years ago but no bites. Got to thinking that it might fit my Smith 10-8, and it fit perfect.

Pappy,
Looks like you kind of planned ahead by getting the holster first, then a gun to fit it!!!

Excellent job!!

That Heiser holster brought memories flooding back of an old departed friend.
On one of my holidays I took a trip over to see Dubie Baxter at Winter Haven,he gave me a real show n tell with a bunch of Heiser holsters and belts that looked just like the one pictured in this thread.
I miss the old guy.

Most people end up buying lots of holsters for a gun, with most of them not being used.

Maybe you are on your way to buying guns for your Heiser holster...good start.

Pappy a Police Trade in that is that old likely has a body or two on it. Back in the day you could shoot a fleeing felon.

Possibly, but these came from foreign countries, mostly Spain and Germany, not the USA.
