Fall Hunting 2019

Just put in two great new boxes for the fall deer season. All went well sighting in the guns. Now just need to shoot a couple hundred arrows and all will be good!

Happy hunting to all!

Tom,
Ummm,is there one set aside for the mother in law????

Squirrel season open here a couple of weeks ago. When the weather gets cooler I will hit the field with the Savage Model 24 22lr/410 O/U.

I don't like hunting in hot weather, doesn't seem right to me.

Wayne:

I have a Model 24.

My Grandfather got back in the 50s or 60s. When he died, my Uncle had it. When my Uncle died, I got it. It was the first gun I ever shot. It was always around on the old home place so I used it a bunch. No telling how many squirrels, I killed with it over the years.

If you miss with the .22, shoot him withe .410.

Re: Fall Hunting 2019 - 09/13/19 11:46 PM

I always wanted a Savage 24 in 222 and 20 ga. But never found one. If you ever watch The Last Alaskans, Charlie Jargow has his Dad's old one that he used on his trap line. That's my favorite show by the way. The most real of the reality shows, with Life Below Zero, second.

Re: Fall Hunting 2019 - 09/14/19 08:54 AM

Probably the best Savage O/U that I had (and sold) was the Camper model that had it's own take down carrying case. 22lr/20 ga and probably was the best squirrel gun combo yet.

Another good one was the .357/20 ga O/U. I only saw one so maybe it was not a big seller and the factory did not make many.

Still,by far and away, the most popular was the 22lr/410 and is now made under the Model 42 designation. I don't think that it is as good as the original though.

Re: Fall Hunting 2019 - 09/23/19 10:31 AM

Here is mine. From this stand, I can hunt deer, hogs, squirrels, and even ducks since a big slough is off to the right about 20 yards.

The only problem is that it is so peaceful out there that I cannot stay awake more than about 30 minutes.

Re: Fall Hunting 2019 - 09/23/19 12:09 PM

That'll get it done!

Good luck and stay awake! Your odds increase 100% with your eyes open LOL

I have so many deer in the back yard there is no need to go anywhere. I have a few fairly nice bucks coming, but the really big ones are still on the mountain across the road they will come down when the rut starts in full swing. I don't have to buy anything since I hunt on my land.

I am Tom I also have turkeys but I don't hunt them never have they just don't interest me they are like tame chickens they don't even run when I go out even with the dog. You have a great looking blind I could stay in there all day.

Big 6 point bull elk bugeling and his harem of 10 cows right behind my deck tonight. Too dark to get any pictures, but I teased him with my elk call for a while. Fun.

Lucky to live where you never know what's going to walk by/through your deck/porch/yard. I keep a turkey call, owl hoot & deer grunt in 3 of those locations so always ready to "talk to the animals." Ive learned a lot of foreign language this way

Re: Fall Hunting 2019 - 10/04/19 12:30 PM

They are in my back yard. I have put out a water trough for the wildlife and they are coming in droves even the squirrel's and the groundhogs like it the grass has turned browned and it is so dry that the leaves are dropping without turning any shades that we normal get in the fall. We need rain so bad. I think Duke will agree.

My grandson who is in the Army and stationed in Ga. came in for a few days and came over to hunt yesterday and was only in one of my stands for less than an hour and got a nice 6 pt. He is just back this morning to try again before it has to return back to base. Sunday hunting is legal here on private property.

Very nice Pronghorn aka Range Goat Tom. When Lucille and I got married in New Mexico, she had drawn out on a Goat tag, so the day after the ceremony, we went hunting. She got a nice buck, but not the size of yours. Congratulations and fine eating too.

300 Wby Colt Sauer with Schmidt & Bender scope. A lot of wind therefore long range shots were out; got him at 128 yds.

Thanks guys. They are fast, impressive to see them run.

Pap,

You are a lucky man there a wife and a great woman that hunts is a special find.

I was confused when I heard them calling them goats, speed goats and range goats.

Re: Fall Hunting 2019 - 10/11/19 11:30 AM

Tom
I was reading some of the Lewis and Clark journals and they referred to pronghorns as just goats. After they saw the real mountain goats, they referred them as range goats. Their hunting members told about running them into rivers and then shooting them because they were so fast any wary.

Re: Fall Hunting 2019 - 10/21/19 08:30 AM

I just returned from my annual quail expedition in southern Georgia. Managed to come back in one piece.

Now to set up for the hunts for squirrels & rabbits. Not many rabbits anymore as we have way too many coyotes.

So I guess that coyotes will also be on the hunt list as well.

Re: Fall Hunting 2019 - 10/26/19 06:04 AM

Just back from a Finger Lakes bow hunt. The winds prevailed and had made the hunt more challenging. Nice eleven at 67 yards, way too far a shot with a bow at 18-24 mph winds. Let's hope the big guy comes back for the rifle hunt!

The blind was as comfortable as can be. Staples for a great chair on wheels with fold-up arms, made the 12 1/2 hour days in the blind less grueling for sure.

Looking forward to rifle season to open.

Saturday 11/16 is the NYS opening day for rifle. This cold snap should be interesting to see how it plays out.
Friends were here last week crossbow hunting and there was alot of movement. Saturday could be really prime and we're stoked. We're forecasting more snow over the next few days and calmer weather for Friday and Saturday but still very cold. I'm so ready to go.

Was fortunate to get a nice young whitetail buck this afternoon with my 50 cal muzzle loader. Idaho doesn't allow for optics on muzzle loaders, so have a open sight, missed the first shot. Fortunately, he let me reload and shot high in the liver, but dump it at about 80 yards. Using my #5-6 as it is a virgin and needs blood.

Nicely done Pap. That one should be great eating.
No I didn't shoot this one but found it dead on my friend's property yesterday. It was crossbow shot 10 days ago square in the shoulder and the arrow never exited. They searched the area for two days but very little blood trail.
The guy was heartbroken until Saturday afternoon when he shot a 10 point pictured below.

Very nice buck!! There was a larger buck by mine, but he took off and didn't give me a second shot that mine did. I'm a firm believer in Tink's 69, they both were hanging out where I put out that lure.

What medicine did you use? Rifle?
