Big bores, then & now...

Big bores, then & now... - 03/03/19 02:56 PM

So as not to continue a hi-jack off of another sub-forum I thought we could open the discussion here, where it belongs...(& I was as much to blame as anyone...maybe more so)!
I have owned several Winchesters in 348 Winchester and 358 Winchester, to include lever guns and custom bolt-actions. Someone asked for a comparison between the old (antiquated) 35 Winchester and the (still around, barely) 348 Winchester.
For the sake of equal comparison:
35 Winchester: 250 Grain jacketed soft point:
* 2,195 FPS (Muzzle velocity)
* 2,670 Foot pounds (Energy)

348 Winchester: 250 Grain jacketed soft point
* 2,350 FPS (Muzzle velocity)
* 3,060 Foot pounds (Energy)

358 Winchester: 250 Grain jacketed soft point
* 2,250 FPS (Muzzle velocity)
* 2,810 Foot pounds (Energy)
** NOTE: All of the above specs is with factory Winchester loads...not reloads...

Hope this helps, Capt. Chris

We used to carry a Marlin in .356 Winchester as a back-up when traveling out west. Not quite as much power as the .358, but was a fun gun to shoot. We left it with open sights, no optics.

Nothing at all wrong with the "older" calibers.

They seemed to have done the job quite well.

In my humble opinion,I really see no need for all the newer calibers. Just my thoughts.

Agreed, if you look at the demise of so many game using the Winchester 94 , 30-30, it's hard to imagine one needs more. The difference is magnum calibers and scopes, allow one to shoot over 100 yards, when using older calibers, you have to truly hunt and be closer. One is hunting, the other is shooting. Pap.

They only introduce the new calibers just to keep their gun sales up. For the guys that always want the latest and the greatest..
But, I will have to admit, I shoot a Remington .300SAUM, and LOVE it....

Pappy,
I agree with you.

I just read an article in the latest Guns & Ammo issue of a person going hunting Cape Buffalo in South Africa with a Marlin lever action in 45/70.

He was using specialty Garrett hard cast 525 gr bullets at about 1350 fps.

Makes me want to get my Shiloh Sharps ready for when the outdoor range opens if/when the snow ever clears.
