"LAST HUNT" BUILD!

"LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 02/13/19 09:59 AM

OK hunters,
This one's for you! I just got back from a short (considering my time constraints) whitetail deer season in Alabama. Although it was short, it was none-the-less memorable as well. Total bagged: 4 does, 1 sow and a bobcat!
Now for this build, let's build the one hunting Randall you would carry on your last hunt. (No fighters please, that'll be another build)
It'll be interesting to see where this one goes! As always, I'll pilot the ship (& right her) where necessary!
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris
PS: "Selfie" taken this past Sunday afternoon of my "LAST HUNT" of the 2018-19 whitetail deer season...CCS
AMENDMENT.............
OK Crew,
It, not only "seems" to be the preference, but I have had phone calls, texts "&" emails requesting that "all" future builds be done using the raffle/lottery system to determine a winner. OK: I don't know about "all" future builds but we're going to try a new approach here. We are going to use the lottery system 1-100 numbers. There will be no more. The price (being as we have "2" knives to build) per number will be $15.00 or "4 for $50.00!
Crew members will be limited to 4 numbers initially. That will allow a minimum of 25 entrants. If we still have numbers left over (or un-assigned) all original crew members will have the opportunity to re-enter the lottery and buy up to 4 additional chances of winning this pair of knives.
If all numbers are filled, we will have a budget of a "maximum" of $1250.00 for this pair of knives. It is my hope that all numbers will be filled, we will generate new interest and, perhaps, new members to these builds. It is also my hopes that we stay (actually) "under" budget. If that is the case, I will post up some door prizes and pull computer-generated random numbers to give entrants a shot at winning them.
OK: I'll post the numbers up and let's see how it goes. You can pay via Paypal, send me a check or money order or call me with your credit card info. Thanks for helping out with these Hunters!
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

A Model for FIVE me. Not that I am predictable!!

It has years since I hunted deer and moose, so I am on the fence about blade length.

Capt. Chris--

We could not go wrong with a Stanaback Special for this kind of build.

However, might want to make tradeoffs around things like sharpened or non-sharpened top edge, wrist thong or none, from a functional point of view and depending on what people might want to use it for.

Re: "LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 02/16/19 11:32 AM

I have a cornucopia of RMK "USERS", that is a matter of record, including a new "pickled" one for this year! I would not hesitate to use any of them, recommend any of them or argue their merits...."BUT"...(It's been a while...I feel better now)...my number one choice would be the same as Bo's: Model #3-5", HUNTER!
I use a tandem of my #3-5" and 5-5" but, for "hunting" (which is what this build is titled) the #3 far exceeds the #5 for function. I have said a thousand times: "I don't care what we build"...and I still don't! Let me give you some advantages of the #3 over the #5...for "hunting"!
I know there are a lot of seasoned hunters out there. I know there are followers (Like Pappy) of the Model #5. I just deem the Model #5 as a superb "camp" knife not the best "hunting" knife. Here's a couple of points.
Model #3-5" and #5-5" virtually carry, weigh and balance the same. This point is true. Blade design, cutting ability and usage are what's different.
* Model #3 is a "trailing point" blade shape
* A trailing point allows less effort (less "swipes) to remove hide (skin) on game.
* Model #3's tip is more "pointed", allowing a more surgical cut around the anus of whitetail deer, hogs, etc. than the clip point of the #5.
* The sweeping motion, used when cutting with the #3 is more effortless than with the #5.
* Re-sharpening (touching the blade up as you skin, clean and butcher game) is a more flowing motion with the #3.
* The trailing point blade shape (verses the straight point) gives you more cutting surface, therefore less "swipes" to do the same job.
....OK: Nuff' said. Below are photos of my #3 and #5 and I love 'em both....just sayin'
Capt. Chris
PS: Stanaback Special is a great choice but stainless and other standard options puts the price "up there"!...CCS

Re: "LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 02/16/19 12:49 PM

No question that there are a multitude of Randall models that would work just fine. For me the Model 5-5 in carbon is the best all around hunting knife. I like the clip blade and is easier to sharpen. For many years I hung up the Model 5 and used a Model 7-4.5, just a smaller version of the Model 3, for all my deer, elk and bear, along with my #9 Marbles hatchet.

Re: "LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 02/16/19 04:32 PM

Boy, I really do hope to regain my focus sometime soon. Just now realized this thread is about a Build.....after having read it several times. Great timing though as I've got my next "really hope to use it this fall in the woods" Randall ordered from the old Capt'n. Shoot, I bet he's even got it on his " hurry up & get it" list!!
A beautiful....& useful, LBB is coming and one we oughta' build here. I wonder how close the gang would come to building the one I've requested (not ordered, mind you).
For a few weeks in the woods, as I've not gotten to do in way too many years, I'd still carry what I have for 45+ years. My CASE 3 blade stockman to trim out the anus & trim off & ziplock the scent glands (to not taint the meat;plus I drag the glands behind me walking/hunting next few days); my #8 old style to do all the field dressing; & either my Buck and/or Randall skinners. Skinners are just better at skinning. And yes, any of these can/will/have done the whole shebang when required.

Re: "LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 02/16/19 10:25 PM

One time there was an old men, also a hunter who visited our house. He was 90 and still drove his bicycle. He lived in a real small house without electricity and water. The house almost fell apart and was over 200 years old. It had belonged to his grandfather.

The man was a legend in the parts where I live. He brought the head of a pig that he bought of a butcher he knew to me. Only the eyes were removed and we had to chop and cut it up in pieces, so that it would fit in the pan. The idea was to eat it together. I chopped away and teeth were going every where. I am not a butcher... My girlfriend watched and skipped dinner that night, lol. I thought she was gonna throw up.

Anyway, the old man and I cooked the pieces and ended up with the whole head cooked. I tried eating it, and didn't want to insult the old timer, but eating the ears and nose of a pig is something I will never do again. When I took a bight of the nose which was perfectly intact, despite being cooked it still was hard to chew on. I saw the two holes of the pig nose and couldn't bring myself to having another bite. I waited till I had the chance to hide it under the table...

Another time a guy who I knew cooked the brain of a sheep for me. That was eatable but I rather eat something else. I always try to eat anything, but somethings are difficult to eat if you haven't learned to eat them when you were young.

Hope that this Build, (as well as the Pick-N-Choose) will each continue to move on as fast as this one has started out. Love these Builds, the discussion and learning, BUT, getting bogged down WITHOUT much discussion is pretty aggravating and a worthless use of time. So, let's get busy building the #23; &/or a combo/duo one as the Captain feels is allowable, as I feel both would be GREAT. I want my users to be ready to hunt when the season opens again.

Screw it! We're building "both"! One caveat: No CW! I'll get working on doing a little "squeezing" to get the slots open for a 2-knife build. Hell, I don't want to be a hypocrite! "I" use both! (Just ask James)...
Now: What do you guys (& girl) think about the raffle system for this build as well? It seems to generate more interest and participation.
Let me know: ROLL CALL VOTE:
A) 100 raffle number
B) Leave it like the "old" builds.
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Re: "LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 03/01/19 05:22 PM

OK CREW,
Thanks for your input so far. We are building a tandem hunting set: The Model #3, HUNTER and the Model #5, CAMP & TRAIL. For some of the newcomers, here's a quick rundown.
Model #3's are available in 5, 6 & 7" blade lengths. All are forged from 1/4 inch stock and either carbon (O1 tool steel) or stainless (440B) are doable.
Model #5's are available in 4,5,6,7 & 8" blade length. All but the 4" version are forged from 1/4" stock, with the little guy made out of 3/16" stock, and carbon or stainless is available on all models.
I don't care what we build. If we decide on a 4" camp & trail and a 5" hunter or an 8" camp & trail and a 7" hunter...it matters not to me. My pair match, i.e. same blade length and options, etc... THESE DON'T HAVE TO!
OK: Let's get started. Speak yer' peace and give us your opinion as to what you like and why!
Thanks, Capt. Chris
PS: I am thinking about offering raffle chances for this set 1-100 numbers @ $15.00 per chance or 4 for $50.00. What do ya'll think of that idea?...CCS

Re: "LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 03/01/19 05:29 PM

Spot on with the raffle IMO.

As far as blades go, I like a 3-5, and a 5-6. Don't care about stainless or not. If we opted for a 3-6 or 3-7, we could get a #6 grind.

Re: "LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 03/23/19 08:41 AM

Just for talking purposes. This one has 6 chargeable options plus a squared hilt.
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: "LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 03/23/19 11:11 AM

Nice knife Warren..."BUT"...squared hilts get in my way and, unless being used on a Divers (to protect your gloved hand from slipping down off of the handle), serves no purpose for "my intended use" of these 2 knives. The squared top is "corner-sharp" and makes my tasks less comfortable, which is why mine sport the (now standard) more rounded top hilt.
I've said it oh too many times: I don't care what we build, however...these builds are not just all about the "build" but for educational purposes as well. I love squared tops and a 6 inch Model #5 and it has a justifiable reason for being installed on one. 5 inch blades, a blade length for more "close-in" quarters work? Not so much...for "ME" anyway. Your mileage may vary.
Best, Capt. Chris
Posted by: Robert Frey

Re: "LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 03/23/19 04:04 PM

If with Stag, Nickel Steel hilt, Alum/Black Spacers, Wrist Thong.
Posted by: LarryWW1246

Re: "LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 03/23/19 08:18 PM

I see that the two that Capt. Chris uses don't have wrist thongs.

Sometimes a wrist thong on a user can get in the way.

And in some situations you might want to discard a knife and not have it dangling off your wrist.

If it is to be stag, maybe go for color over popcorn texture...rough stag can be hard on the hands.

If we want to improve the grip for wet work, then maybe FGs.

Also, for a couple of working knives, I don't think they need a compass. Most of us would know where we are and where we are going, and have other navigation aids that are better at getting us back where we want to go.

Just a thought...

Re: "LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 03/23/19 08:44 PM

Larry,

Nobody said you have to use the lanyard. I had a few nights searching for a blade when dressing an animal. Wish I had one at the time. I agree at times they do get in the way.
Posted by: pappy19

Re: "LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 03/24/19 12:51 AM

As a hunting and fishing guide, I personally would hate to use a knife without a wrist thong. Probably not a big deal with whitetail deer, but elk and moose are a whole different story. And for cleaning fish, the WT is a must for me. To each their own, but I think the WT is a valid option. If you don't want to use it, then take off the para cord.

OK crew:
Here's what's for sure, according to my tally:
* Stag handle it is
* Brass single hilt (not squared)
* Standard spacers
* Thumb notches on both
* Wrist thong
...That's 3 options on the #3 and 2 options on the #5. So...where do we go from here? We had 2 votes for a compass and 2 for ns hilt and metal spacers. I think we've eliminated the ns and metal spacers but a compass? Let me know and I can get these specs sent in.

Re: "LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 03/26/19 11:42 AM

This build keeps finding new life and different paths. Just in the last few posts we're finding wings for finger grips. I thought we has decided on stag but not on fg's? 4 want 'em...3 do not of those who have responded.
*Note: Although Pappy makes some valid points from his guide experience, to include "fishing" trips is moot to a last "hunt" build...sorta'. Wrist thongs, I most definitely agree with on a fishing knife, or a mountain-climbing knife. An option I did not do on my hunting knives, at least not these 2.
Compass: I installed a compass on "both" of my users. (I have a lot more than these 2 but these 2 are the ones we're talking about). I installed them for many reasons. Some of those reasons have nothing to do with how good or how bad the compass is. I'll give you all an example or two and, like Pappy, I've guided lots of folks in lots of places, for hunting, fishing, camping and photography all over the world. (Well: Half the world anyways)
Archery hunting: Not sometimes but "many" times, when you stick a whitetail or a hog with an arrow, the game takes off and leaves your immediate hunting area. Many times you are elevated in a tree stand or tripod, etc. You can visually make a mark with your eyesight as to where (exactly or almost exactly) the game ran off the field or out of sight. By referencing that exact point with your compass, you can get down, after waiting a half hour of course, and head in the exact direction, using that same compass from the ground and easily pick up a blood trail.
Pre-season: When locating a hunting stand or shooting house location, during the pre-season or any other time, it is always a good idea to "favor the wind" when choosing this spot. Being as how I hunt in Alabama and during the winter months, the winds tend to blow out of the North. I use my handy-dandy compass to determine that wind so my new location does not blow my sent into the hunt!
These are just 2 examples of compass usage where:
* I'm not lost
* Precise compass bearings are not required
Those handle-installed compasses work great..."&"...oh by the way, they're also pretty darned accurate! I don't care if we install them or not. I'm just telling you why "I" installed them.
Hope this helps and let's finalize these guys!
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Re: "LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 03/26/19 01:17 PM

Cap is right on. A friend of mine and I were hunting in a new area and he spied a nice buck while we were driving. He jumped out and shot the buck. It took off down a small draw and into a patch of timber. Thinking the deer was probably dead, he didn't take his day pack and only had his knife and rifle. Then it started snowing. After an hour, I started honking the horn and yelling, but the falling snow was muffling the sound. After 2 hours, I started driving around to see if he was on a road. 5 hours later I finally found him about 4 miles from the start. He lost the trail of his deer, didn't have a compass, and was wandering around until he lucked out finding a road that I happened to be on. He didn't have a Randall at the time, and I showed him my Brad 5-5" with the compass, and he ordered one the next week. Regardless of how well you know an area, sometimes having a compass will be a great asset.

Good thoughts on the compass Pappy and Capt Chris. Not having a compass could indeed make it your “Last Hunt”.

Re: "LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 03/27/19 08:02 AM

I do not go out into the woods or on the water w/o a compass.

I don't rely on these modern GPS things as batteries have a tendency to go dead at the worst moment.

Besides I don't own a GPS rig and probably would not know how to use it if I did.

Heck no since it's a lottery situation.
I am confused as to who has given dollars for this build and the Bowie build. I thought my $100 was for 24 spots on this build that wound up with 2 knives, a Model 3 and a Model 5. Someone needs to pull this together. Cap, are you there?

Let's take this in baby steps: We need to fill these numbers for this build: $15.00 per number or 4 for $50.00. Pappy: Your $5.00 numbers (all 24) are in the "Parks" build...(Your Baby).

I see 8 for fingergrips if I counted correctly. Most of these also wanted a compass as well. There were no plain stag votes.

I'll get your numbers picked-n-posted Mike. Coming up and...thanks Warren. While we never had an actual "vote" on final handle options, I appreciate your tally, saving me some time.
In the meantime: How about a "ROLL CALL VOTE"!! Vote for one and one only:
A) Stag handle (natural)
B) Stag handle (finger grips)
Thanks, Capt. Chris
PS: While I know nobody actually "voted" for the natural stag, many posted they wanted this pair of hunters "like mine" which is natural. The vote will decide and ya'll know I don't care "which"...CCS

Re: "LAST HUNT" BUILD! - 04/29/19 09:42 AM

OK Crew,
Thanks to all who have participated in this build. I am fixin' to random-pull the winning number on the RKCC "Parks" build. That build, unlike this one, has a full boat as far as raffle slots. I will be leaving Florida, mid-week, to attend a funeral for a longtime friend in Alabama. I will return on Sunday and will random-pull the winning number for this build "next Monday".
Please consider throwing your hat in for additional slots, if you feel good about doing so. There are not enough funds to justify this "pair". In the future this type of raffle will not happen again...so...This is your last shot, unless expenses get paid for. I don't mind building these knives (or other builds) "BUT" they have to pay for themselves. With knife slots allocated it simply will not work to do another one of these. I hope ya'll understand.
