Show your woods ride - 11/05/16 11:59 PM

These pics are a few years old and I've added some needed accessories but in the interest of the upcoming hunting season let's hear from ya.
Mine has a long story to tell when I got it; short story is Miss Deb and I fight over who drives now.
So UTV, ATV, woods SUV, how do you guys go to the woods.

Nice ride Cap. I use mine all year long for all kinds of chores. That is when I can get my lady to let me use it. I see you have a similar situation.

Re: Show your woods ride - 11/06/16 08:04 AM

Here is my lovely wife and best friend with a nice cow elk she harvested a few years ago. We have had this Kubota 900 UTV for 10 years and have really enjoyed it. The 3 cylinder diesel gets about 80 mpg and has a hydrostatic drive just like a tractor. Top speed is 28 mph, but who needs speed when hunting. We also plow snow with it during the winter.

Pappy,

That's the Mercedes Benz of side by side UTV's. Great pic of Lucille with her elk. Thanks for sharing.

Don't let Grant see that photo Pappy. I hear he might be looking for another date! Not Lucille/ The Cow. His last one's probably a little "gamey" by now!

Marty,

You strong like bull...
I want tractor.

Re: Show your woods ride - 11/08/16 08:17 AM

Warren, old bull not too smart. I would sure liked to use my tractor, but in fairness I used my son in laws strong back for the heavy packs. I got old man sized loads.
AND got my cardiac stress test out of the way for another year!!
Fun times

Re: Show your woods ride - 11/08/16 08:24 AM

That's for sure Marty. Flat land maybe so, but not where I hunt. Too many uphill climbs.

Re: Show your woods ride - 11/08/16 10:38 AM

Don't know of any flat Colorado public land, except maybe in the two Grasslands. There you find Antelope.
That has got to be a real work-out with both the altitude and the topography, no matter how much you're lugging.

Re: Show your woods ride - 11/08/16 11:57 AM

Yes sir David! I was in the San Juans near Telluride. 10,000 ft.
Glad I had a week to get some altitude adjustment. Only flats on the top. Beautiful country I try to visit every fall as long as I'm able!!

Telluride -

Nicknamed "To hell you ride" by the Railroad conductors in the old mining days. One of my jobs after the service was working with the Colorado Historical Society on a film of the area. My job was at night processing film, so I had the daytime to go trout fishing. We all camped in the old schoolhouse. Was a good summer.

Re: Show your woods ride - 11/09/16 12:28 AM

In the entire US, the Gila Wilderness Areas is one of the most unique, wild and beautiful places I have been. That and the Turkey Creek area of SE Arizona, rank right up there for any sportsman's bucket list. Did you stop at Datl for a beer?

I was the project manager on the Arizona Interconnect Power Line that goes from ElPaso to Springerville, AZ. We had a field office in Silver City and a spike office in Reserve. Spent 2+ years off and on in that area. Very interesting country.

Nice buck Dwight.

Re: Show your woods ride - 11/23/16 11:43 AM

nice looking Buck,

nice ride also, I still like the 4 wheeler ATV over the UTV. in New Mexico we have a 50" wheel width limit. from outside to outside of front wheels. that is a National forest rule here. so the ATV works better.

Re: Show your woods ride - 11/27/16 08:56 PM

Bought it new in 1977. Was a daily driver for more years than I care to admit. Did a frame off rebuild about 10 years ago. It's part of the family.
Seems CC's are part of the conversation. This old Jeep has a 6670 cc engine.

One of my "wood's ride" with trusty farm collie....taking a break from bush-hogging a bulldozed timber road. This one is a 1960ish Ford 4000; the 1950ish Ford 4000 has a front hydraulic blade. The collie is from our own homegrown bloodline going back 56 years..... lotta' smart, protective, good working dogs. This tractor has carried out a buncha' deer from sides of mountain steeper than a cow's face.

Re: Show your woods ride - 02/08/17 09:31 PM

I was ask what a 6670cc engine is.

It is a AMC Jeep 401 cid V8 bored 30/1000 over with a DUI s/s ignition, Edelbrock cam & intake, Holly 670 cfm 4 bbl Truck Avenger carb, Flowcooler H2O pump, 4 row aluminum radiator, 2 Optima batteries (one in the photo) that gets a good 10 mpg if I keep my foot out of it.

It get me into the woods and back out...fast.

Not many dynos in Deep East Texas. The "experts" on the AMC enthusiast discussion boards say with the way it is built it should go about 375hp.

With the cam/intake the torque is strongest in the lower RPM range. It's a Jeep, not a rod.

Re: Show your woods ride - 02/14/17 09:54 PM

Ronnie,

That could well be the best built Jeep flattie I've ever seen.

The 4.3 is the perfect engine for a CJ-2a. It's 3/4's of the best engine Chevy ever produced and cubic inch wise close to the original small block 265 cid.

Anyone that doesn't know what a Jeep flattie is ask Ronnie or me.

My woods runner is a 2007 Polaris Ranger 700. I got it from an old neighbor a year or so ago. It is my "Do it all" rig. I use it for hunting out at the ranch. Trail riding in the National Forest and for chores around the hacienda....

That's a DR "Field and Brush" mower. I also have a Sears rider mower, but parts of our property were too rough for it, so I got the tow behind mower. So far it has worked out great.

Tom I have only driven the new CJ once since it arrived. (Been sick and cold weather) It will fly! You know your jeeps and you also know your Chevy engines! I can't wait for warm weather and a good car show to go to. Glad to know we have another Flat Fender lover here.

Bush Hog also makes one called a "GT-42". It'll chop a lot of stuff up. Believe me! I've used one for years at the hunting camp.
