Re: Spring Stock Sale - 02/18/19 08:29 PM

8 years or so when a RMK was listed here they went to the first person who saw them.
At Blade when dealers would get a order in people would line up to buy there new knives just like the stock sale. And folks who wanted to sold them to others 10 minutes later at a higher price.

Sounds like good ones! I've heard of a crowds of buyers at the Clinton table on set up day... and other top makers holding raffles... just to be lucky to buy a knife!!

I have made it twice.. 1st time with our son who is about to marry and venture off! I was too new and ill-prepared to see it all!

Chief--

I thought about spreading fake news about one of the sales, either by saying it was a later date or that it was cancelled...but a joke like that might have gotten me splayed and flayed by the group who showed up at the actual sale!

It was another GREAT YEAR!!!!
THANK YOU RMK for allowing us such a wonderful opportunity. The guys who come each year REALLY appreciate it!! =]

Dave,Dave,Dave,Larry, Clay,Rick, Jim, and Bill it was WONDERFUL to see you all again. Safe travels home fella's. Enjoy your knives when you get em.

The guys who couldn't make it...YOU WERE MISSED!

The selection this year really was 1 of the absolute best ever! I am happy with my pick and the 2 picks I used to take care of brothers who couldn't make it.
Posted by: thevalueman

Re: Spring Stock Sale - 04/08/19 03:29 PM

Peter...If yours had been available when I got there, I would have nabbed it to(not two, but would have selected it first)...I like the set up on mine, however I was kind of looking for a lugged hilt myself....the FCH was almost the winner for the build that is going on, and, I really haven't given it that much thought, as I just have come to see the big ones with the lugged hilts...guess because that's what's in the catalog....when Jason started off with nickel silver this, and nickel silver that....I folded....just like any one of us would have...anyway...I'm happy, and am excited, and it looks like there are a lot of happy campers!!!
It's all good when you're buying!!!
Thanks to all at the shop for a great sale!!!
:-)Rocky

Re: Spring Stock Sale - 04/08/19 04:24 PM

James--

Just in case...somebody misunderstands and has questions...we were allowed to select one knife each until everybody who was there had a chance to buy a knife.

Then...for people who might have wanted to do so, they started the rotation over starting with the number 1 person in the lineup and allowed us to select either 1 or 2 knives (this because they had what I was told were 130 knives for the in-person sale).

The 2 knives you bought for your friends were purchased on your second round. Which was thoughtful of you.

And thanks again for the coffee! I meant to find you to "settle up," but got caught up in the action.

Hope to see you later in the year...most likely at the fairgrounds.

It was a no brainer for me when Mindy said ironwood Smithsonian.
I would have grabbed it regardless of the hardware
But the one you got sounded great too. There was a Thorpe too but I wasn't looking for one of those

Peter

I am glad all you guys got some nice stuff

Re: Spring Stock Sale - 04/08/19 05:35 PM

What a Great Stock Sale!!

I would sleep in my truck to see the cases full of Knives
It was great to see people who I only see once a year and miss those who couldn't make it.

Thank you to all at the shop, Scott, Aron, Gary and those in the back taking calls Mindy and Jayson

The Big Boy Knives I'm sure were worth camping for
I hope we get to see a pic of the Randall Sword...
and Dave Thank you for all you do
You know most them Randall enthusiasts are heavily armed

I don't know what was in the back
But it took me 4-1/2 hours to call in just to say Hi to Mindy
Sharpi

Re: Spring Stock Sale - 04/08/19 06:23 PM

Peter, as I recall the Thorpe was leather...I was not looking for leather, so, I passed
It was not clear to me about 1 knife per contact....there were times in the past that a person could buy 3 at a time..."as I recall"...I did buy 2 at one time a few years back, and did not feel good about it. I guess the rules may not have been clear. I did call back today, after my first "buy", however did not select another as what I was looking for was not available. I'm not sure how it's done today, but the one per time, per customer contact, would appear to be fair, and allow others the opportunity to get a shot...
my .02 for no necessary real reason...

Re: Spring Stock Sale - 04/08/19 08:24 PM

Rocky--

It has been some years since I did the call in, since I have gone to the spring sales in person most of the recent years.

Back when I did call in, they allowed two knives per caller once they were able to get through.

I don't know if they changed that this year or earlier, but the rules might change as they try to accommodate as many customers as possible with the knives they have available.

For people who are there to shop in person, they have always limited each person to one knife through the first round. Then if they had knives left they previously allowed each person to come back in numeric order (number assigned according to when somebody shows up for the sale) and buy a second knife until they sell out.

Today, they had enough knives to allow people to buy two on the second pass. That is a judgment call they try to make based on the number of knives to sell and the number of people who are there.

Interesting...that some people come looking for just a single type of product. If they don't find it when they get their turn, some of them look for something else of interest and buy that. But some people, immediately upon not seeing what they want, simply say goodbye and leave. Others aren't looking for anything specific, and just wait their turn and try to buy "something" out of the case that appeals to them at the moment.

The get-together is a lot more interesting than just going to buy a knife. People with various backgrounds (none criminal so far as I know!) always have stories to share, not all of it knife related. And Scott and some of us customers usually bring along some knives for "show and tell." Not all of them are Randalls so we all might learn some new stuff.

Can't do that on the phone!

Larry

Re: Spring Stock Sale - 04/08/19 08:42 PM

Last several years when I did get through I was always offered a second knife. I don't believe I purchased a second. I recall about 4 years ago they had knives available for about 3 days after the sale day. That could have been the year the phone lines were down on that particular day.
Michael was manning the phones back then. Never in a hurry and always had as much time as you needed.
So, was the museum open? Hope you had a chance to visit.

As this is my first "smitty" it was quite a grab for me, in many ways!! the pocket book and the massive size...
I sold a confederate for my dad many years ago, but I do not remember it weighing this much...and that, until now was my only experience with these monsters.

Re: Spring Stock Sale - 06/03/19 01:52 PM

By way of clarification...

Sharpi posted his Model 26 Pathfinder that he bought at the Shop Sale.

I happened to buy the last one they had.

These are "mistake" knives in that a batch of what I was told were 25 carbon blades had been mistakenly trademarked with the "stainless" stamp. Rather than discard the blades, the shop decided to mark them with a "C" for carbon, and make up a few for each year's stock sale until they are sold out.

I welcome any clarification needed by DW if my information is not correct. Would also welcome, for the sake of future as-yet unborn Randall collectors, information on how many have been made with which handle materials and for which Shop Sales.

This year's batch have maple burl in the Model 25 handle configuration, and copper fittings. I assume the maple is stabilized(?) considering that Gary once told me to never send them any un-stabilized maple.

Larry
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Spring Stock Sale - 06/03/19 05:54 PM

Couple of clarifications Larry: Not a #25, rather a #26 with the #25 blade grind...and, I believe the handle material is Thuya Burl.
Best, Capt. Chris
Posted by: RamKingJC

Re: Spring Stock Sale - 06/03/19 10:15 PM

I absolutely WISH this year's option was Maple...

It is Thuya... you can't smell the #2 pencil on it???

10 per year.

1st year was stag
2nd Maroon micarta
3rd Thuya

Re: Spring Stock Sale - 06/09/19 11:27 PM

Seems like I remember hearing that there were 100 mis-stamped blades. BUT (see that Capt.?) My memory is just getting worse and worse. I think the Shop is making 10 of these for each shop sale?

Austin, nice piece of work there.

If you want to get outstanding photos, take a look at my thread in the "Picture Gallery", "How to improve Your Knife Photos", and as my friend, Tony LaPetri, might say, "Take it outside".

See his post of 7/03/2015, post #129342, and see how a overcast day can work wonders on details.

Also check out Steve Holzinger's photos taken with a "point-and-shoot" camera.

If you're using a smartphone to take photos, send the photos to yourself, and when the prompt asks you for the choice of image file size, you choose something around 400-500kb.
