The Combat Companion (Battlefield Buddy as Capt. Chris Stanaback and others like to call it) as written on the Non-Catalog as follows. 5” blades of ¼ stock. Top cutting edge sharpened brass double hilt.
Lades and Gentlemen lets see all of those Combat Companions!

Re: Knife Of The Week Model Combat Companion!!! - 04/27/08 08:13 AM

Jesse..and others,
The specs for my "Battlefield Buddy" shown above are:
A) Stainless steel blade (I know...What a shock, right?)
B) Thumb notches
C) Nickel silver single hilt
D) Aluminum and red spacers
E) Outstanding "amber" large stag handle
F) Nickel silver butt plate
G) Wrist thong
H) Waxed sheath *Note the CCW stamping on the back of the sheath, indicating waxed.
Hopefully we'll see a few more! Best, Capt. Chris

Re: Knife Of The Week Model Combat Companion!!! - 04/27/08 08:36 AM

Capt. Chris, I hate to reveal my stupidity, but what is "CCC", if "CCW" is CC Waxed?
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Knife Of The Week Model Combat Companion!!! - 04/27/08 09:03 AM

"CC", if you are referring to a sheath, can only mean that the sheath was ordered for a "Combat Companion" (that it 2 of the 3) and that particular knife has a forward "curved" double hilt (that "curved" being the 3rd "C"). I take it your sheath you are referring to is for a knife as described?? Best, Capt. Chris

Re: Knife Of The Week Model Combat Companion!!! - 04/28/08 11:18 AM

I think this is the most chameleon-like of all Randalls. By this I mean a different handle, hilt, etc., really changes the overall appearance of the CC more so that other Randalls. A #1 will always look like a #1, regardless of the handle material or shape. But change something on the CC and it just looks completely different. At least to my eyes. YMMV.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model Combat Companion!!! - 04/28/08 11:44 AM

Jerry,
Good observation...I agree!
The difference is especially strong between a double and single hilt CC.
Also when you compare a stag handle with a nice downward curve and a
Micarta handle!

Yes, black/red spacers. This particular CC would make a great "camp" knife as well. It only needs a wrist thong to make it almost perfect. The linen micarta handle is really neat as well and it fits your hand really nice with the crows beak.

Not sure when it was made. I traded for it for a Merle Seguine I found at a gun show about 7 years ago. The fellow I traded was a Seguine collector and wanted it real bad and he came up with this Randall CC. I thought it was a good trade.

Both wonderful knives Guido!
Are you sure they are CCs? They seem to me two Airman with the sawteeth / no teeth grind... Anyway, congrats for this purchase and enjoy them smile

What kind of wood did you order on the CC, Patrick?

Re: Knife Of The Week Model Combat Companion!!! - 01/13/14 02:35 PM

Sorry for the delay. It must be ironwood. I got the knife in a lot of six out of a real estate.

Will make better pics and post them.

Here's an unusual CC with Palmwood, crows beak, black spacers, sawteeth and wrist thong, SS blade. I won the palmwood in one of the first drawings on this web site. All brass and very nice build.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model Combat Companion!!! - 04/27/15 10:00 AM

Well, I guess I better get it out of the safe and take another look at it. I bought it in an Amoskeag auction a couple of years ago. It was described as a Combat Companion. I think the sheath is stamped CC on the back, but I will look and get back to you.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model Combat Companion!!! - 04/27/15 10:24 AM

I believe it to be a Model #5 Bruce. The "CC" with sawteeth is forged and cut differently. If that is Johnson roughback, it would be rare in "CC"? I do not recall one, as the non-catalog denotation and entry into it for the Combat Companion was later??
Curious? Not impossible, just curious.
Thanks, Capt. Chris

Here are some comparison photos.

#5'5" with teeth and Combat Companion with teeth.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model Combat Companion!!! - 04/27/15 02:03 PM

Capt. Chris - I was mistaken. The sheath is stamped 5 5 on the back (and it is roughback). I have attached more photos of the blade and the back of the sheath. Do you think the sheath and knife are correctly matched? It wouldn't be the first time I bought a knife with a non-original sheath.
I guess I'll have to change my designation of this one to a #5-5!
Thanks for your comments and the photos.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model Combat Companion!!! - 04/27/15 03:04 PM

I think that "mistake" worked to your advantage Bruce. That knife/sheath package is as right as rain and, in my opinion, came from the shop...just the way it sits?
Nice knife, Capt. Chris
PS: Johnny Johnson roughback...not the old man...CCS

Re: Knife Of The Week Model Combat Companion!!! - 04/27/15 07:36 PM

Capt. Chris--

For us novices, and to help us keep track...

1. When did the CC start production?
2. If we order a Model 5 with Teeth, what are our choices in blade length?
3. I vaguely recall that these days if we order a Model 5 with teeth that we are going to get the CC forging and not the Model 5 forging. Is that true?

Thanks for clarifying.

Larry

Re: Knife Of The Week Model Combat Companion!!! - 04/27/15 07:50 PM

CC with teeth only holds true for a 5" Model #5. 6, 7 or 8" are cut on Model #5 blanks. The RKCC version of the CC was early 1990's or perhaps a bit later, if memory serves me. A search of the RKS CD's would probably cut the time guessing out. It was a couple of years past those that the CC came into play as a non-catalog model.
Hope this helps, Capt. Chris
