Re: Knife of the week Model #12-9 #14 grind - 04/20/08 03:26 PM

This exquisite combination of nature's creativity and the unparalleled craftsmanship of the Randall artisans belongs to our good friend accross the pond, Neale Jenkinson. Neale picked up the block of Ambonya burl at the Guild show in 2004.

I'm usually partial to ivory and stag, but this knife certainly has me thinking about adding a few exotic wood handled Randalls to my collection. The combination of the brass lugged hilt, scalloped brass collar and flanged butt cap with the commando handle is absolute perfection.

Re: Knife of the week Model #12-9 #14 grind - 04/21/08 08:21 AM

When the model #12-9/14 grind was first offered in stainless steel it became the largest Randall blade available in stainless. The bowies are challenging knives to build and crafting them in stainless steel could only add to the time consuming task. Initially, the new stainless version of the model #12-9/14 grind could only be ordered with scrimshaw. This was an effort to mitigate the expected deluge of orders for the new Randall. Perhaps a year or so later, Gary allowed that the requirements for ordering the #12-9/14 grind in stainless could be expanded to include engraving and/or scrimshaw. A short time later the popular "stainless 14 on steroids" was made available without restrictions as a non-cataloged model.
This image below is one of the first of these great knives.

This is an 80's vintage 12-9 #14 Grind in Crown Stag with finger grips. This knife is perfectly balanced and a pleasure to hold. The finger-grips are an option no longer available on crown stag knives. That's too bad because it really is a nice feature on this handle. This another crown stag knife in my collection that remains as one of my favorite Randall knives.

Warren

Re: Knife of the week Model #12-9 #14 grind - 05/17/09 09:14 PM

We talk about no two Randall Made Knives being the same.

Check out these!

I like the shape, color and more uniform "bark" of the stag on the top #12. Looks like the leather washers are either fewer or thinner than the bottom knife giving more space to the stag.

I like the thinner guard and larger diameter grip of the bottom #12.

As for the blades the only difference I can see is the deep Randall stamp on the bottom blade. We have discussed that elsewhere on the forum. Seems it is found on some newer blades.

Re: Knife of the week Model #12-9 #14 grind - 05/17/09 09:31 PM

Tom,

I'm not sure if this is what you said but this is my preference. Put the stag from #1 on the #2 knife everything else the same and that knife is really great. In fact they are both great but placing these two side by side really shows the subtle differences in knives. Thanks for posting these two bowie's.

KSC/Nasa G3 Handle, Challenger Etching.

Re: Knife of the week Model #12-9 #14 grind - 10/25/12 10:59 AM

My newest addition is a #12-9" with an old school sawtooth grind. I am not sure if that is a correct description. The micarta handle looks green in the sun, but I believe it is considered black. This knife was on Ebay and was not sold. I contacted Jack Crider's duaghter Jackie with a reasonable offer that she ran by her dad and struck gold IMHO. I also have a model 14 set up the exact same way. I hope you guy's like it.

You're probably right that the balance would improve, but the knife really doesn't feel all that bad without it. (I once ordered a Randall knife with nickel-silver butt-cap. Ended up trading it, because the knife felt much too handle-heavy to me.)

Re: Knife of the week Model #12-9 #14 grind - 12/12/14 05:54 PM

Well boys and girls, I just ordered my 3rd Randall, A 12-9. It will be plain after looking at some of these here. But I plan on using the daylights out of it. I think I will gut a goat first thing with it when it gets here. I never trust any weapon I have not used at lest once. After this one I want a 12-13 if I can get what I want on it. (Guess I'll have to do a cow with it.) Also thanks for all the pictures that are put up, really helps out on just how to put one together. Thanks to Buck for working on this for me.

Thanks for your service also! I Hit Ft. Bragg the first time in 73 and fell in love with the place. Of course I came from the hills of Arkansas so this was the big city to me.
Also sorry but the 12-9 will be my 4th Randall. I also have a 19-5 coming in also. All of mine will be working knives. I will be giving away some of my others to my brothers boy and his son so they can have a knife to use. (Some hand made puma's). This is a very nice form and every one has been so nice and helpful.

My 12-9 "14 grind" and 12-9 Bowie "Clip Point", both with the model 25 style handles, must have been fairly early in the "Super 14s" orders history. I have had the knives a few years now.

I placed orders with Scott (when I was in Orlando for a PRI show) after visiting the shop and asking his opinion on what I should order at the time.

Re: Knife of the week Model #12-9 #14 grind - 11/20/15 10:21 AM

Tom--

The "Super 14's" are yet to be built!

If they were to get around to making such a knife, it would consist of the Model 12/9-14 Grind blade, the Model 14 style guard, the Exposed Tang running the length of the handle, and the Model 14 Micarta handle in the customer's choice of Finger Grips or Border Patrol contour, and of course the Wrist Thong that is standard for the Model 14.

A number of what I call the "Almost Super 14's" have been made (a couple sold in prior years to some other person and to me "way back" and then a number of them at one or more of the stock sales). But these knives have the narrow tang, and not the true Model 14 Exposed Tang.

Re: Knife of the week Model #12-9 #14 grind - 11/20/15 07:32 PM

You are correct, I was confusing a 12-9 "Model #14 Grind" knife with a "Super 14 Grind" knife (in the 12-9 size). DOH.

When you get to be old and the pics look similar to the other knife(s) offering . . . . . (you get the idea).

Re: Knife of the week Model #12-9 #14 grind - 05/08/18 06:24 AM

I was looking on the sites of the Randall dealers for a model 1 standard. I was hoping to get one without having to wait.

I found one on the site of Clinton knives and bought it from him. I spoke on the phone about a knife I wanted in the future: the model 12-9 #14 grind. He said he had one and maybe even two of them for sale right now.

One of them was stainless which I wanted and Gary said it had great stag (I am very picky about wood and stag)
The knife was a order from a costumer but the the buyer cancelled it yesterday.

Gary mailed me a picture of the stainless 12-9 #14 grind and it was exactly my taste in stag (dark and thick) Now I am Brooke but Happy!

Here it is:

Re: Knife of the week Model #12-9 #14 grind - 05/09/18 05:41 AM

Thanks Chief! You are absolutely right. The Randall's are a joy to own an admire and also hold their value, that is always a good thing indeed. I was lucky to get this 12-9 #14 grind. My Smithsonian with the Amboyna burl from the Captain should be here any day. Can't wait to see and hold that one.

Last January I ordered another Smithsonian from Nordic Knives. It should be ready by the end of October. I could pick the desert ironwood for it. I love to know upfront the wood or stag that is coming on a knife that I order. To see a piece of wood or stag you like being turned into a beautiful knife handle is something special.
But I don't have to tell you:D I saw that you even buy your own wood and stag, when I was reading some of your posts. You have some outstanding knives!!!

The Smithsonian I ordered will have an ironwood burl handle, nickel silver forward curved double hilt, black and duralumin spacers and a rounded nickel silver butt cap.

The 12-9 #14 is the last for this year. I am starting to become a Randall junkie and my wife also has a few things in the house she wants done. She even encouraged me to buy the last knife (I have a sweet wife :d) so I can't complain. Next year I will be looking for something with musk ox (I find that material amazing) and/or thuya burl.

This is the ironwood burl from Nordic Knives for the Smithsonian:

Call Duke MaCaa for your Musk Ox.
Look at lots of knives done in ox 1st & feel free to pm me if you want to talk about the different looks that it can have.
I learned from the Capt. that a natural end is a great look as well.

I will be at Blade this year let me know some of the types of wood you my be interested in & I'll try to hunt it down for you.
Nice piece of ironwood good that it's light colored as it will get darker over time.

Re: Knife of the week Model #12-9 #14 grind - 05/09/18 08:04 PM

Thanks Chief for your advice! I am gonna do exactly what you said regarding the Musk Ox. I will certainly take you up on your offer to send you a pm if I have questions.

Someday in the (near) future I will go to Blade, must be great to be there. I am also a gun nut, so Shot Show is also on my bucket-list.

Real nice of you, that you are willing to look for fancy wood at Blade. What comes to my mind is a beautiful piece of thuya burl for a Smithsonian or a sportsman Bowie. But I don't know if there is a big difference with that of the shop? Randall seems to also have real nice thuya burl.

When you have ironwood there is a lot of difference between the wood as you know. I don't know if that is as much the case with thuya? I have to educate myself more on this wood type by looking at pictures on the internet laugh
If some other wood pops in my mind I will let you know Chief.

Re: Knife of the week Model #12-9 #14 grind - 10/27/18 01:49 AM

I managed to get hold of a nice 12-9 S/S Stag with Nickel Silver Guard (FORWARD curved) just before departing for this Winter at Gt. Barrier Island here in NZ. for past 3x Months

While my Cold Steel LTC Kukri is still my # 1 slasher when clearing the Bush tracks, the #12 has had a good work out.
I use it when just light tidying up is needed when going for a walk rather than dedicated clearing of Gorse etc. The Gorse is hard on the Edge and also on my hands !

I have been doing this pretty much every 2nd day, balanced out with Sea Kayaking on alternate days as I enjoy both. My #25 5 inch is on my Leather belt in Dry pack along with Survival gear in Kayak, i.e. not worn.
For what it is worth, what I have noted over past 3x months..

1/ I always use a wrist loop even when wearing Youngstown gloves for extra control, rather than the extra retention aspect. This is the configuration where the loop goes over the back of hand and then over the thumb, NOT over the wrist as name suggests. I use a loop made of the reflective Goughlans tent guy line available at Outdoor stores rather than Para cord, just in case I drop it in the Bush or River when releasing it in a fall. (it happens)

2/ I have relieved the area in front of Guard both top and bottom, both sides to give more comfort when “Choking up” as this gives me more control and ability to “Wrist Flick” which is especially applicable when cutting lighter grass and reeds. The near 90 degree finish on Guard was irritating the crease in trigger finger. This moderation is hardly noticeable when looking at the Guard, just enough to make a considerable difference in comfort.

I have found it a lovely knife to use and carry through the Bush even though the Stag handles are quite smooth. This would be a issue to me if used without gloves for longer time each day.
I don't want to roughen up Stag with wet/dry paper as I enjoy looking at the Stag as is.

Anyway, just my observations on a lovely Knife.

I don't want to discourage using any Randall knife, but you might want to consider a Woodman's Pal, the one with the handle guard. It sounds perfect for what you are describing.

Re: Knife of the week Model #12-9 #14 grind - 10/29/18 02:23 AM

Thanks for the info and link Guys. Interesting looking “tool”
If I'm cutting grassy stuff, I'll take along my Fijian Cane Knife (32 inches O/A length) with hook on top ($10).

The Silky Saw gets used on thicker Gorse trunks.

I guess I just like using the #12 and look for a excuse to swing it...

Re: Knife of the week Model #12-9 #14 grind - 05/18/19 08:26 PM

Better late than never! I was thrilled to get this beauty at the 2018 Spring shop sale and it definitely made the wait worthwhile. The wood on the #25 handle is burled, dyed maple which is beautiful in itself but to me the extraordinary feature and the real prize was the N/S hilt and butt cap. Greg Gutcher made the sheath from a beautiful end piece of crocodile tail and said he used techniques and tooling differently than he had ever done before. I think the sheath compliments the knife perfectly and is a masterful demonstration of Greg's work that I could not be any happier with.

DW had me guessing when he did not include the lugged hilt...but that comes standard/no charge on the model 12 and 13!

And the black sheath is an up-charge, but does not count against the knife options.

I like the knife, it is one of my favorite models.

My customer is approaching the 400 mark on his Randall collection, including 60+ Bear Bowies, his favorite. His second favorite is the Model 12-9"-14G.

I talked him into getting this Sportsman's Bowie and matching Bear Bowie in nickel-silver mounts and elephant ivory. The pair were among the last to leave the Shop before Gary revised the ivory policy.

In spite of being stored in a climate-controlled room surrounded by his collection of two dozen Griffin & Howe rifles, the ivory cracked on both handles after three months from hilt to butt cap.

You probably hit it on the head.

We have seen the same effect with some stag sizes on the Model 12 Heavy, and also the angle of the knife in a photo can make it look that way.

Re: Knife of the week Model #12-9 #14 grind - 07/14/22 09:36 PM

Looking at ratios of blade length to blade width on Craig's knife and another on the Forum, it looks like Craig's blade is about .2-inches wider than that knife. That along with its steep clip point instead of some of the longer clips seen, and with its deeper choil, his blade gives the appearance of having a smaller length-to-width ratio than say the one pictured by GHD above.

No two are exactly alike, which has been said a few times before.
