Knife Of The week Model 23 - 03/16/08 08:33 AM

Thanks to all who have participated thus far.

From Randall Made Knives: The History of the Man and the Blades, by Robert L. Gaddis, pp.231-232.

Quote:

During late 1971 or early 1972, Bo and Gary decided it was time to add another style of straight-point hunting knife to their expanding selection of field knives. They wanted something between the extremes in size and weight of the small Model 8 Trout and Bird and the heavy-duty Model 19 Bushmaster. Bo had never really liked the looks of the Model 19, even with its revised blade shape. There is better than a 50-50 chance that the original discussion and designing session took place during a trip to the Randall ranch, or maybe while they were on a hunting or fishing outing. When father and son were away from the press of daily business, their minds often turned to the imaginative designing of new and different styles of knives.

They retained the main feature common to both the Model 8 and 19, the straight-point blade with its sharpened top edge. This short but sturdy top cutting edge was popular with many hunters and campers and was to be a major feature of their new knife for big game hunters. The blade length they settled upon was 4 1/2 inches, the same as the Model 19, but the new knife's width would be considerably less. Because this was a full-size big-game knife, they stuck with 1/4-inch forging stock, to avoid the edge-chipping problems encountered in the Model 22 Outdoorsman.

It wasn't long before they took their ideas to the forge and grinder, possibly with Pete Hamilton doing part of the work. Pete remembers talking with Gary about the design and fabrication of the prototype knife and referred to it as a lightened Model 19. Nobody remembers exactly how long it took to arrive at a final blade shape that met all the functional and aesthetic requirements of Bo, Gary, and the senior shop craftsman. It must not have been too long because this new design was the "Gamemaster" and was in production before work was begun on the next catalog, sometime in the late summer or early fall of 1972. This twenty-second printing introduced the Model 23 Gamemaster to prospective purchasers. Part of the original catalog description read: "A variation of Model 19, serving the same purposes, developed because of popular demand for a knife with these characteristics. Top edge is for heavy-duty cutting..."

Bo and Gary's new hunter has turned out to be one of the more popular models in the Randall sporting knife line.

Lady and gentlemen, may we please me some Model 23s?

This is one of the oldest #23's you'll see. It has 7 spacers which were being phased out as the #23 was being developed and added as a standard catalog knife. It's in a model #20 sheath.... again, pointing to a very early #23.

Criminy, Tune. What's the big deal? The shop made TWO of them with 7 spacers!

Re: Knife Of The week Model 23 - 03/16/08 01:15 PM

Many of you have seen pics of this 23 in the past. This is my carry knife for deer season, and I recently posted a pic of it laying on a deer as it was field dressed. This is what it looks like clean. There is a story with this knife too for anyone interested in hearing it again. I got this knife from a friend that bought it in the 70's after returning home from Vietnam. He lives out west and hunts with a bow only. This knife has dressed and skinned many deer and elk for him before it ever came to be my carry knife. I have recently received a model 25 and am thinking of retiring this one from deer season but haven't actually made up my mind yet. I like the blade length a lot, and since it is like a model 8 in shape, I love the design! This really is a great knife that can be used for any purpose a hunter/outdoorsman would need.

Kevin,
I had hoped I could post a photo of my "user" #23 laying on a big catch of Caddo Lake Crappie. It was not meant to happen.
So here it is on the patio of the tomthbomb cave posed on a Dire Wolf fossil.

Tom, when you skinned the Dire, did it scratch the blade?

Graham,
And standard size butt cap (not "thin")...And standard butt end (not "rounded")...And "FL" stainless trademark instead of FLA stainless trademark. Other than that..IDENTICAL"!! Just jackin' ya', mate! It's very difficult to find 2 Randalls the same...even "close" to the same. I get a "boatload" of "pairs" of Randalls made up. Often, I have to make them again. Best, Capt. Chris
Posted by: Ausblade

Re: Knife Of The week Model 23 - 03/16/08 10:07 PM

Actually this #23, is one that was ordered as one half of a pair. The other half is a model 14 and it is one of the 2 knives in my avatar. With the different blade, single and double hilt and variations in the stag there is nothing identical about them
Posted by: tomthbomb

Re: Knife Of The week Model 23 - 03/16/08 10:26 PM

It is hard to overlook the variations of what I call "the dip" (for lack of the proper term) on the top of the blade just in front of the guard. On Graham's and my #23 it is very shallow as compared to Ron's and Dale's knives. Their Randalls are older and it may be an evolution thing. It is a little hard to see it on the others posted here.

Here is a "fighter style" #23 I have with more "dip" than my gold #23. It is about a year old.

Don't get too excited, it's a Chinese reproduction. It works OK though. It is chambered for 23/4" 12G and has a 20" Cylinder bore (riot gun).

Hello amigos!

I like model 23 very much. Here is my own copy, bought in year 1993 at the Shop. I love the finger groves on the stag handle, and the maker made a beautiful job indeed. White parts of stag are so highly polished!
Hope you like this knife as much as I do!

It's closer to your bed time than mine Dubie and I think it was Kate and I that were the fortunate ones as Dubie showed us part of Florida that we would never have found on the tourist route.

Pap I’m pretty fond of that top #23 also. No it is not a user, I have a #25, #26, #28 and #10-7 set aside as users.
The rest are just for lookin, though I have thrown one or two in my hunting pack as spares on odd occasions and that top #23 is one of those.

Thank you Kevin for reviving the Knife Of The Week thread it is a great resource for the forum.

Tony,

are the FG of the regular kind or is the handle slab sided and the FG "under" like on Rod's knife or on a #15?

How I wish I had made that acquisition! laugh

Best, Peter
Posted by: TonyLaPetri

Re: Knife Of The week Model 23 - 09/13/10 08:37 AM

Peter,
The finger grips on this knife are "under" style, like a #14 or #15, but not as deep as the 14 or 15.
No slab sides, though the handle sides might be slightly less round because of the under FGs.
Thanks,
Tony

I've had this one since 1988 and it was used when I bought it at a show in TX. Is in a JRB sheath with smooth snaps. I love it. It has always had the discoloration on the blade with a little etching. I don't really care as it is a user. But, I'm really interested to see if anyone has ever seen this spacer combo before. That is what really turned me on to this knife. I've never seen it since.

Thanks for looking.

Re: Knife Of The week Model 23 - 12/12/10 01:25 PM

Hi Tom,

I think you are referring to the color of your spacers.
I have two Model 5 from the 80'ies that have a similar middle spacer.
The Birdseye Maple handled one is from 1985 - sorry for the props in the picture smile

Looks like some of the spacers lost their color over time - makes them even more special for me wink

Tony, we've already finished dinner on this side of the big water - guess what we had?? laugh

In fact, if I compare the spacers now it is interesting to see that the middle spacer looks almost the same but the outside red spacers seem very much like the red ones today on Tom's knife. Mine are faded as well. confused

Edit: Sorry, just found the other post concerning this spacer topic...

Re: Knife Of The week Model 23 - 12/13/10 06:35 PM

After further thoughts over the weekend and seeing the posted knives lately, I have decided to "lower" the last years of the model 23 to the late 70's - early 80's for sure.

Reasons being, that the thick red was discontinued around the same time I started at RMK, ('83), except for the bowies, and that red with the "gray" interior was in use with that thick gray one...mostly...

I would say that the knife was made pre-84 for (almost 99.9%) smile positive...

Jim, I normally use 2 lamps and cardboard covered with a semi matte silver foil to control the reflexes on the blade. I'm not a big fan of 'light-tents'. And a tripod is a 'must' of course smile

Re: Knife Of The week Model 23 - 10/16/12 12:23 PM

Model 23 ordered from Randall's shop in 2006. This is my current do-all Randall, and is with me when on farm and in woods.

When I first received the knife, I thought the grip on it was a bit thick, felt more like a hammer handle than the stag grips I was used to. After a couple of weeks of trying to get used to it, it still felt like a hammer, and I called Randall's shop, hoping they might be able to grind it down a bit. The shop said send it down, and they would look at it. A couple of days after UPS picked it up, I got a call from Gary Randall, who said that he didn’t like the way the grip felt either, and that he would make it smaller. I was a bit surprised when UPS dropped off the knife just a couple days after that, and was pleased to find that the grip was much smaller, and had the right feel.

Just in last week 2 days before my birthday, ordered April 2009 smile

Model 23 Gamemaster, stainless steel, brass square top hilt brass and black spacers, maroon micarta model 22 handle with brass crows beak and wrist thong with a left hand sheath.

A model 19 twin should arrive before the end of the year.

An excellent job by the shop and that maroon micarta finishes great

Great looking knife. I would not be showing it to all its IRONWOOD kin that live at your place. It may cause some hard feelings.

This photo is probably posted somewhere else on the forum but not in the Knife of the Week forum where it should be.

My favorite #23 stuck in a 300 year old cypress knee(ouch) at Caddo Lake. Caddo is the largest and oldest natural lake in Texas.

Re: Knife Of The week Model 23 - 03/15/14 11:13 PM

A good friend of mine from Louisiana Tech, when we were in college together, had his home in Oil City, LA on the banks of Caddo Lake. I went home with him one weekend and his daddy called us out in the back yard to the bank of Caddo Lake and said to look over at the oil well gushing into the lake. He said we would never see that again in the future, and he was right. It was the one and only oil well gusher I have ever seen. I think it was on the Texas side of the lake. Beautiful lake, regardless.

you have a 400.00 knife, a 600.00 Winchester rifle, and a 100.00 scope. what's up with that???

LOL.

Posted by: Cut it out

Re: Knife Of The week Model 23 - 12/02/15 07:51 PM

Lol no know I know..... It's always worked just fine. It came on the gun. Savage by the way. Not a $600 Winchester. I hunt where 100 yards is the farthest shoy and really never needed more. I do plan to get a Nikon scope that I put on my Ruger. Great scope for $150.
Posted by: maxpastor

Re: Knife Of The week Model 23 - 12/02/15 08:55 PM

The Savage is a good weapon, the new short action is very popular, with adjustable trigger. optics are something most sportsman over look, early morning and late evening shots are most common and without good optics, good opportunities are lost, even at short ranges. If you can't see it, you can't shoot it.

quality of Knives, Rifles, and Optics are equal.

just my option.
Now back to the subject, great Knife and great pictures, thank you very much.

Peter Kaufman is rubbing off of me.

I now like desert ironwood, especially on these two sporting models.

On the left, the Model 23, and on the right, the "Sergeant's" Model.

Gorgeous ironwood!

Well, to be honest, I will say ... no knives are allowed in Europe. But, there is a general "tacite agreement" with the authorities that make them close their eyes if you have your knife in "normal" situation (as outdoor) AND if you don't use it/ show it unnecessarily. It's the reason why I always hold it in my bag or in my pockets and never on my belt. For the kind of knife, a model 2 will be less appreciated by the authorities then a 23 or a 28. Hope it helps u.

That is just nicer than words can say. The 23 is in my top five Randalls, and close to the top.

Thank you Tom, I love the yellowing of that Ivorite. The options on your beauty look to have been borrowed by me.

Yes, Cap, it is AGM. It is resting on a Dire Wolf fossil I picked up on a turkey hunt close to Del Rio several years ago. Here is another photo because I don't get tired of looking at this one.
