Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 02/17/08 09:34 AM

Thanks to all who have participated thus far.

From Randall Made Knives: The History of the Man and the Blades by Robert L. Gaddis, pp. 209-211

Quote:

During the fall of 1962, shortly after Gary joined the shop as a full-time employee, Bo's son-in-law Bill Baker brought a good friend of his to the knifeshop. Norm Sherwood was an avid outdoorsman and resident of Colorado who was preparing for an extensive pack trip into the wilderness. He was familiar with the Randall line and liked the Alaskan Skinner design for the field-dressing of game, but for his impending wilderness outing he needed a more heavy-duty, all-around field and camp knife, one which could even be used to cut brush for a cooking fire as well as to field-dress game.

The style of knife he desired was unavailable, so Norm and Bo started sketching out ideas. Their final design showed a short blade with a well-rounded belly for skinning large game animals, while the top was shaped somewhat like a shallow, inverted "V." The foward portion of this top edge was sharpened, using a wide cutting angle, like those on a hand ax. This top cutting edge could be used for chopping brush or some of the heavier cutting chores necessary with a large game animal. Just ahead of the hilt, the blade top was thumb-notched, in the manner of Tommy Thompson's Model 11 Alaskan Skinner. The very sturdy, heavy-duty blade was to be made from the full thickness of 1/4-inch forging stock.

"He wanted a heavy-duty knife with the top edge sharpened so he could cut through sinew and ligaments with it, maybe small bones, and not ruin the good edge down below," was how Bo related the short story of this knife's origin. The name for this new knife was suggested by Bill Baker as soon as Norm and Bo had finished their design. It was termed "The Bushmaster" because its reason for being was Norm Sherwood's upcoming pack trip "into the bush," and that name has stuck with it ever since.

...While looking at the old photograph, ... Bo and I nicknamed this original style "The Tadpole," because of its fat-bellied, long-tailed appearance. Bo's comment was that "we liked it well enough that we adopted it, but it's not a pretty knife, and we just didn't sell an awful lot of them."

...Because of its moderate popularity, Bo kept seeing the knife in the shop and was always reminded of how displeased he was with its overall appearance.

...Sometime during the early months of 1964, Bo received a sketch and order for another "special order" knife that must have fueled his desire to modify the Bushmaster design. It seemed that Robert E. Carter, Jr., of Granite Mountain, Arkansas, had his own definite ideas about the style of a heavy-duty game preparation and field knife he wished to carry "in the bush." His design sketch showed a 1/4-inch blade of 4-inch stock, with a sharpened top cutting edge like the Model 19 Bushmaster. But Carter's blade wasn't as fat as the Bushmaster, with its cutting edge shaped more like the Model 11 Alaskan Skinner, and the blade top didn't rise up into the peaked, inverted "V" shape of the Bushmaster. Carter didn't want his knife to have a sharp point either, wishing the cutting edge to be carried around a well-radiused front end. For a handle, he chose one of Micarta with finger grips, similar to that shown on the Model 20 Yukon Skinner.... Carter finished off his special request knife with thumb notches ahead of the brass hilt and a compass set into the handle butt.

...Sometime in late 1965 or early 1966, Randall Knives changed the design of the Model 19 Bushmaster to a more pleasing shape, which would also render it more compatible with its other styles. It appears that Carter's special request knife figures prominently in this redesign effort.

Lady and gentlemen, may we please see some Model 19s?

Kevin, the #19 is one of my fav's!

I've been whackin' a lot of knives into that old Hickory stump lately. I may have to start looking for a new one soon.

Here's one that will be going to a new Randall enthusiast in the Heart O' Texas this week.

Here is an off-shoot of an old Model 19 that I bought from a fellow that lived several years with a group of Eskimos in the Artic. His Eskimo name, "Antorssuak", is etched on the back of the blade. The sheath he made with native materials. The knife handle is from oosic he provided. These two photos by my good friend and Japanese Knife Magazine photographer, Hiro Soga.

And below a Model 19 that I bought from Randall famous Tommy Bish. The sheath he made using skin from a leopard he killed. Easy Joe.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 02/20/09 09:22 AM

Funny you mention that Kevin. I've only told a couple people about it since it recently arrived. It IS actually smaller than normal. It measures 4 5/8" long which with each being hand made and varying slightly would make you think it's a #19-4 1/2"... since it's only a mere 1/8" longer than a 4 1/2" blade. The order was for a 19-5", the invoice says it's a 5", and the sheath is stamped 5"... very unique. I have seen quite a few #19's, even had many displayed together as a group in my personal collection, but this is definitely a first for one like this.

The smaller 19's generally look "wide" to me because of their short blade, but this one looks normal because it's not as wide. It's kind of hard to tell seeing it by itself, so here's a pic I took the day it arrived (still has the stuff on the blade in this one).

A Pair of #19's - 03/17/09 10:12 PM

Had the S&W since it was new in 1964. Grips are by Russ Maloni who went by the name of Russwood Grips. They are made of coccobolo.

Got the Randall last week from the Shop. The Randall has my silver furniture and David Warther's ivory.

If I order stag from the shop is there any way to know what it will look like?

Keith,
No, you won't actually see it until it's delivered. You could always suppliy the stag and pay the extra fee of $45 to have customer supplied material installed plus the $50 or so cost of the piece of stag to begin with, but then again there is no way to know how it is going to look for sure. Those wanting a large diameter stag may be surprised at the area needing to be taken down so it fits flush with the guard or hilt, and so on. This is the major reason why the knives on the secondary market bring a higher price (well this and the 5 year wait invloved). When looking at one for sale you get two really great things... 1). eliminate the wait 2). you get to see it first to know for usre if it's exactly what you like/want. To someone getting many knives for a large collection it may not be so important as they may have several of the same model so different, or variety, is good for them. However to the guy wanting just one knife for using, a model 25 for instance, and not planning on ordering any more but wants the 25 "just" the way he likes it with coloring and texture in the stag, etc. it may be much more advantageous for him to supply the piece. 5 years is a long time to wait for something you won't be really happy with after it finally arrives. To a guy like me... I like them all so any look is good. But as mentioned, even when supplying the stag you still don't know for sure what it will look like... which is why buying one that is already finished makes it so much easier. You can see it first...as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 05/18/09 06:30 PM

A while back I was talking with a couple of other members, and we were discussing our faith. From that we decided to come up with a Christian Men's Knife. We put together the following knife. And now it is here for us to carry, and for others to see.

We decided on a Model 19 with the following specs for the following reasons. A 5" stainless steel blade because Jesus' life was stainless. All black spacers because as Christian men we feel sorrow for the agony that He went through on the cross for our salvation. An ironwood handle because in these times it takes an iron will to live a righteous life. Our sheath is basket weave to represent the crown of thorns on Jesus' head, and as you can see there is a cross on the sheath.

As one of my favorite hymns is Onward, Christian Soldier, we named this the Christian Soldier Knife. There are other men who have these knives and I'm sure they will be posting in the near future.

I personally feel the knife and sheath are fantastic.

Please see the photos below of my finished knife.

I really do think this knife turned out exceptionally well. As always the shop did a fantastic job with the knife and Greg did a great job on the sheath. I am sure the other Christian Soldier's feel the same way.

Keith,
There is absolutely no reason that you can't have one!
We didn't make these as a "look what we got" item. Anybody who would like to have one of these has but to order it from a dealer or the shop.
Greg Gutcher has ordered extra Cross conchos so call him & get in line for 1.
The iron wood is shop supplied.

These knives are not numbered! As we don't view ourselves one before the other, just as men of a similar belief in our LORD GOD!

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 06/07/09 08:57 PM

Thanks fellas, I was waiting for a super stag one to come along and ended up with this instead, the wood is Lignum Vitae, pretty tuff stuff from what I've read, never seen any up close before but was very pleasantly surprised when it arrived...

Rob
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 06/07/09 10:48 PM

Rob,
That's a good-looking #19, but that wood is not Lignum Vitae. Lignum Vitae is much more olive in color (no exceptions, that I have ever seen) and has a close-pattern grain, similar to herringbone. It also has a smell that gives a hint of vanilla. I'll post a pic of a Randall made up with lignum vitae.
Best, Capt. Chris

Posted by: RKS3500

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 06/08/09 01:34 AM

You would probably know better than anyone Capt' but I don't know, the belly of my handle appears similar in grain to yours, maybe a tad darker but you may have a AA grade vs maybe mine's a b grade piece, I do have some swirls on the sides with some great lines on top that go into a small knot. I googled Lignum Vitae and all kinds of photos and info pop up, different shades and colors. There's also "Argentine Lignum Vitae" which some sell as the real LV. I didn't know Lignum Vitae is the most dense of all the woods in the world, it won't float and it 3 times harder than oak. Surprisingly it's used for bearings, rollers and even underwater propeller bushings. Mine does have a slight hint of vanilla also, cool stuff, thanks.

Rob
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 06/08/09 06:34 AM

The matrix of your wood appears to take on the look of walnut, olive wood or perhaps a burl, but the grain does not appear to be anything similar to lignum vitae. (Some of the lignum vitae installed originally in the Hoover dam is supposedly still there). regardless of the wood, that #19 has an extremely cool handle! Good luck with it.
Best, Capt. Chris
P.S. I have a small piece of "Curly Koa" which has similar properties to your handle. I'll post some, if I "EVER" get a break in this friggin' weather!!...CCS
Posted by: 7033grip

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 06/08/09 07:41 AM

Captain, I beg to differ on the Lignum Vitae.

Most of what is seen is not true Lignum Vitae. The stuff you see on eBay for instance, is from Argentina, and is sort of greenish/olive.

I will send you a piece that came from Key West that looks very similar to the picture.

Dubie Baxter
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 06/08/09 08:24 AM

Could be, Dubie:
I have bought it at various shows for a good many years, from several different sources and never seen any with "knots" (or burls, if you will). I can only go by what I have had experience with. I bought 12 pieces from the Keys 2 years ago, at the "Guild" show, when I met Tom & you there. It was delivered to me from a customer in Longboat Key...It still didn't have the 2-tone coloring, or grain and color of this #19.
It's all good. I am certainly not the "answer grape" on all types of wood. I'll await the stuff from you. I am hoping you're correct, as it would be nice to see some lignum vitae with "figure".
Best, Capt. Chris
P.S. Dubie: Email sent...CCS

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 06/08/09 11:56 AM

Dubie,

If possible, sand a couple sides of a block or two the LV you have down to at least 220 grit. This should be just about enough to expose the grain in the wood. The stuff you showed me that was in your trunk looked to have some nice wavy grain but it needs to sanded a little to get a better look. I remember the blocks you had were like holding a piece of rock it was so hard.

Kent,

Thanks for the nice comments.
------------------------------------
Peter,

The Musk Ox to me feels very smooth with only a hint of a surface texture. Yes it is beefy, this knife combined with the N/S buttcap is fairly heavy. Thanks!

Kevin,

Thanks for the comments. 2 or 3 knives huh? Lucky guy!

Rob,

Peter asked the same question. It's not as silky smooth as ivory but it feels solid. This knife is quite heavy with the N/S buttcap.

This fine pair of RMK 19's just arrived in the mail from Leanna and Gary Clinton of Clinton Knives.

The craftsmen at RMK have certainly outdone themselves once again.

The stag was supplied by the Clintons and, as you can see from the attached photo in its raw state, it was beautiful to start with and after the shop got through with them, they were magnificent.

I hope everyone enjoys them.

Friends and Kevin,

19 19's? Well, I've been two timed a few times in my life, but this takes the cake! Here I am believing that Kevin likes #26's, and then he goes and posts 19-19"s!

Next thing I know, He will probally be posting 8'8's Since I have been left in the dust with the 26's, and Kevin and now Graham have moved on, Kevin, I think that you should just mail those poor, deserted 26's to me! (You can keep the vase)!

What fantastic photos of the 19's. I see that one in the first column must have been falling apart, because there is a pin in it. You may as well throw that one in with the 26's too!

Dale, I really like that Buffalo horn handle, especially the furrell stuff. Too bad the shop isn't allowing it anymore. I'd really like to get a 19 with a furrell handle.

I just received this ironwood #19 5" from Miles this week.
After seeing Tom's ironwood #19 posted here, I saw this knife and looked at it for several weeks and it was still there
Did I mention that I like ironwood.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 04/25/10 11:02 AM

Here is my second #19, which is a #19-4.5" that I recently acquired from Rob Schoening. The option that attracted me to this particular specimen was its #14 style finger grips. The nickel silver hilt and red/aluminum spacers were icing on the cake.

Here is a bottom view of the #14 style finger grips, which basically means that they are ambidextrous, and not hand-specific:

Here is a closer view of the red/aluminum spacers:

Ever since I started visiting this forum, over three years ago now, I have been constantly hearing about this one collector that continually gets all the good knives, especially Model #19's and stag handles. Rumor has it that he resides somewhere in the NE part of Indiana, loves hunting and especially loves the winter and the snow. These latest photos clearly reveal just who this collector might be. grin grin grin cry cry grin grin grin

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 06/29/10 05:51 PM

Thank you Harry, Mike, and Kent.
When I first posted The Knife Of The Week thread it was my intent to give collectors an opportunity to see Randall Knives and the multitude of options available. With over 123,000 views on the total thread I think that there is a good chance that has happened.

I also feel that it is important to show the craftsmenship of each knife and to pay homage to the craftsmen of Randall Made Knives.

When I receive a new Randall Knife, I am in the comfort of my own home. I open the box, take the knife out of the wrapping and tissues paper, and then wipe the blade down with a soft cloth. I then look at the knife from tip to butt, and am always amazed by their beauty. I think about how tough it must be for the Randall employees from forging the blade in extreme heat through all of the assembly processes. And every time, the knife is beautiful. Their painstaking labor is greatly appreciated by me.

The first photo is redwood and the second is maple.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 03/22/12 09:05 PM

Just took this out of the box less than 20 minutes ago. It's the very first Randall knife I ordered from the shop 5 long years and many more Randall knives ago. I ordered it with a 5 inch stainless blade, top bevel sharpened, nickle silver single hilt, thumb notches, beautiful shop stag, duraluminum crows beak butt cap, standard rwb spacers and optional black sheath. All I can say is, the stag is out standing and the pictures do not do it justice.
Thanks for looking,

Dan,
That's a beauty!! The crow's beak is starting to appeal to me.
I think that my next order will have to include one.
My second order from the shop(#5) was to be shipped yesterday.....5 years is a long time when you are waiting for a Randall!!!
Enjoy it!!

That's a real beauty. When I am home in Idaho, most days, I pack my #19 on a daily basis. It actually is more of an all-around survival tool than one might think. The 5" blade is the perfect length and heft. 5 years is a long time to wait, but worth it in the end, for sure.

Thanks for all the positive responses guys. This knife has jumped to the head of list of my all time favorite Randalls that I own. The only thing I would do differently is have a thong hole in the crows beak. Now that I'm more familiar with the knives and know what they can and cannot do, I can now see the benefits of a wrist thong on this model.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 08/11/13 02:40 PM

I like the double snap sheath! It might be a bit more to get out but it would carry very well and be extremely secure.

Anyone know if this is an option?
Posted by: TonyLaPetri

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 08/12/13 08:43 AM

Very NIce. Great Handle!

NEVER saw a sheath like that.
Posted by: Buckspen

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 08/12/13 10:45 AM

Here are some additional photos of the sheath and stone. I didn't notice before, but the outer part of the snap on the upper strap has been moved. Both snaps are marked the same; TRW DOT inside the outer part and DOT DOT on the inner part.
The cuts in the belt hanger part of the sheath for the upper and lower straps look slightly different. The cut for the lower strap has rounded corners and the cut for the upper strap has squared corners. Also, the border stamping (tooling) of the straps are slightly different. So, I guess it's possible that the upper strap was added later. On the other hand, the wear on both straps is about the same, so the addition would have been made quite a while back.
In his description of this knife, Steve Zimmerman called it a custom sheath. I really have no reason to doubt that. Steve is a reputable guy and has been in this game a lot longer than I have.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 03/15/14 11:10 AM

Every now and then really nice things happen in life like.......a genuinely good-hearted, kind soul appreciating some things that I have done for her over the years; enough so that she absolutely shocked me with this #19 as a "gift of appreciation".....no other reason. She has, of course, known of my appreciation of truly outstanding knives(& Randalls in particular) but had no idea of what knives/ Randalls I own/don't own/want, etc.; could not have chosen any better even if I'd listed what I wanted as the #19 with stag is absolutely on my long "some day I hope to buy......" list, BUT, is this stag outstanding or what??!! Truly, there are some tough times in life when amazing kindnesses really do more than just the gift itself and this is one of those times. AND, thanks Randall guys and ladies for producing such incredible works of art that are also so outstanding in doing what they are made to do!! I know #19 is really too large (especially compared to Grandpa's CASE, which will also go with me in my pocket in a couple weeks-like usual) BUT, my Spring Gobbler will meet this blade!

Sorry guys, That is my "insurance photo" and that knife is in a safety deposit box somewhere close to the tomthbomb cave & teleport.

If you insist I will de-box it and take a photo of the other side.

Last time I did lay eyes on it, the musk ox grip had shrunk about 1/64" from the guard spacers just like most of the others I saw back during the great musk ox scare of the late 2000's.

I bought a 19-4.5 from one of the well respected on line dealers last week, it showed up yesterday. They are one of the dealers that support this site.
Not sure if the Randall wrapping had been unwrapped or not, however, the sheath is the 19-5 model, did not look right to me, did not put the knfe in the sheath, called RMK this AM, it is the wrong sheath, so back they both go to RMK.
Sure do like the M-19 blade and thicker handle profiles, could be the perfect all around designs, at least for me.
Pics when it returns.
Best,
Gary

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 05/08/15 05:11 PM

There was a discussion a while back regarding a Sullivan High Rise sheath for a #19-5, and I finally got home long enough to take a few photo's. When I pack my #19, this is the sheath I wear. For a big knife, this is really comfortable compared to the regular sheath. I still prefer a pouch type, but this will work.

A couple weeks ago I received a 19-4 1/2" Was not overwhelmed with pleasure. Like my 23 better.

Saturday, I received this 19-5. Now I am very pleased. It is a stout knife and will be a good heavy duty work knife I keep in my truck.

Of course, I rounded the guard a little as well as the butt. Kept the top edge though. Which is a first.

I was telling Kevin that I would be over on his lake ice fishing one evening and asked if he was up for a visit. He walked out and we talked for about an hour while trying to catch some walleye. He was about to head back to his house when he turned around and handed me a package, with orders not to open until I was home. It was my first Randall. I sure miss my talks with the big ox. Before he died he wanted me to have this 19 in my collection so I picked it up from his wife. It's still one of my favorite Randalls and always brings back good memories.

Posted by: Lofty

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 02/20/16 09:35 PM

That is the one which always caught my eye. And still does. The internet lives forever, even if some static archive somewhere. So will the knife and the story behind it. And a paper link to that internet story will complete the circle, almost like having an old magazine article featuring a knife going along with the knife. Thank you for letting us know. Seriously. And about the fate of that knife in particular.
Posted by: Chief

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 02/20/16 11:14 PM

For the record

The 6 knives on the left of the photo came from Tom Clintons collection.
Gary Clinton was kind enough to sell them to Kevin and I.
Of course Kevin wanted them to all be together & so that's how those 6 got there.

The 2nd one from the bottom on the far right side I got done for him by Jim & James at Treeman.
This was brought about due to a 27 that I had done the same way that he liked.

Most of the middle ones he ordered, he was particular about having straight handles on the stag.
The top middle being the 1 exception as he liked how it felt in his hand.

Those are the only ones that I know the particulars on.
maybe Warren, Big Jim, Tom the Bomb, Doug, Graham or Kent, to name a few could add more on some of the others.
Posted by: W Polidori

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 02/21/16 04:17 AM

Chief pretty much nailed it however I will add that the nearly all the stag was dealer supplied and not shop stag. Your favorite red handle 7 spacer Randy made a visit here for a while. I'm glad it found a good home where it's appreciated.

I'll further add there were additional knives that never made that group shot for whatever reason and probably came later.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 02/21/16 10:27 AM

"And now...we have, the REST of the story."
Thanks, gents. Makes one wonder how many times collections have been assembled with great care, broken up later, brought back together later still with even more effort, broken up again, etc.

This one is one I answered with in another thread, but no story with this one except mine own, bought new, but very old style.

The photos answer several questions others might have.

How strong is it? About as the front half of a #14, with nice useful deep primary edge. Compared to a #1 edge on right.

How fat is it? Not very. Not with a normal or finger groove handle.

How useful is it? Very. Consider all the most useful knives generally have a lot of handle for a smaller blade, best leverage and control. Just scale up the idea to near unbreakable and you have a #19. A compact Randall with more strength than a potato peeler, so to speak, and my "always" knife as in true daily wear.

5) Model 14 Deep Finger Grips
6) Wrist Thong
7) Compass
8) Custom Greg Gutcher Basket Weave High Ride Sheath w/Canteen Snap

The sheath is shaped lefty as well. Look at the sharp-edge side.

Subtle detail but yes correct. Not stamped L however.

I agree with Chris that the black sheath is a left hand sheath and the model 19 in the first picture is in the sheath backwards.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 07/23/16 12:54 PM

As for carry of a favorite, had a sheath made by Harry Savage, who will win no beauty awards, but makes extremely solid sheaths of oil tanned leather which is not near so quickly ruinous of metal, makes a variety of Randall specific sheaths reminding one of old JRBs, the thread is linen, and every stitch pulled by hand.

And wait times in weeks, and normally near $50, even on a new oddball request which he had never tried before, and this is his take on how to skin this moose skinner. The loop can be specified for belt width, and stitching independent of sheath body. It hugs the very top heavy knife into place nice and firm with no flop, even with my favorite 25yr old 1" harness leather belt. A good hard use woodsbumming daily driver sheath for a very favorite all-purpose Randall design and particular favorite knife.

What gets me about Harry is that I have had him make at least 10 Randall sheaths and have yet to need send him a knife for fitting and have had one semi-loose strap which still retained the knife just fine. I hate risking shipping an irreplaceable favorite, such as this #19 where never in a million years will they ever make one which fits my hand as perfectly as this one, and this suits me just fine.

Nice. Beautiful 19.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 07/23/16 02:59 PM

Thanks, Ronnie, I loooooove this knife. Nothing fancy, but sculpted so well to hand. The handy sheath makes this knife what it should be from the start. Always there. Which was entire point of shorter knife. This new sheath dumps 2.5 oz off the weight compared to the stock sheath, 13 oz total compared to 15.5 oz., quite perceptible in hand or on belt.

The 19 gives me big knife performance in most areas which matter, but in something hardly longer/larger than a Trout and Bird....gotta love it...and now, even handier.

As for beautiful? I dunno. Still has much of the original 19 tadpole look about it to me, bizarre, even. But works so well.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 19 - 07/23/16 05:02 PM

That's a beauty of a 19 and your new sheath is a dandy as well. I like the high rise sheath on my 19, you don't even know you are wearing it. For anyone that actually uses a 19, a high rise sheath is the only way to go, IMHO.

Am quoting simply to save typing...the knife and high ride sheath MADE for each other. Your gorgeous sheaths from Danny kicked the tires and lit the fires to have something similar made up, but more in keeping with this working girl.

And with my penchant for wearing a thick skinny 25yr old belt plus top heavy Big Brass Butt Bertha, here, kinda could see the knife always ending up canted 45° front or back depending on her whim and not mine if I used Danny's rig. Plus it will end up taking a beating and "correct" not meaning much on something destined to not last long anyhow.

It is real nice, Chief, but is missing a high ride sheath for perfection. I am sure you have the matching saber toothed tiger pelt versions, or a Tyrannosaurus skin version, which modesty has prevented showing, ....so will reward by letting it slide, while we return to the subject of other green monsters.

This 19-6 might look familiar to many of you but it has a new home. TTB has visitation rights anytime.
I did have some questions and gave Doug Kenefick a call this afternoon and this is what he shared; his recollection.
Doug became a RMK dealer in June 1977. Back in the day you could order a minimum of 6 blades with a special forging. The idea for a 19-6 came from a customer of his who wanted a bigger blade so he ordered them sometime around 1980 or so. He said maybe 10-12 were made, but certainly in small numbers.
We shared some stories but overall it was a nice exchange and he is a very nice man to take my call.

Took a few new shots today, hopefully turned out well. I'm sure Mike Mason will chime in. This is one really cool knife and you have to hold it to appreciate the heft and balance.

Re: WWII #19... - 01/17/19 02:45 AM

Rocky, right smile he also have not sharpened the top edge,
otherwise he would not have passed customs.
They opened the parcel, inspected, made the act
and allowed to be imported.

It is very well made - a thin sting, smooth lines.
But I have to sell it. While I was waiting of him create,
I had surgery on my wrist. Nothing dangerous,
but my fingers can not squeeze the handle as much
as I could before, therefore, due to it he almost fell out
of his hands several times yesterday and today.
I definitely have to order the version with
the grooves of the fingers and the hole for strope.
Something like this, but not necessarily a thuja,
it's just a concept. Either I take off this handle
and put my own, with a better grip for weak hands

Re: WWII #19... - 01/18/19 09:44 PM

Here is the only Model 19 that I own. And the first one that I've ever actually had in hand. Just a very stout knife, and built like a tank. One question, would this be considered a separate "S" stamp? Thanks for any comments or expertise.

Sure looks like a Separate S to me. 7 spacers sure helps the argument that it is!

Re: WWII #19... - 03/01/19 10:16 AM

It's "positively" a separate "S", being lower than a "wandering" S. Great knife!
Best, Capt. Chris
PS: One of my favorite #19's...

Haven’t posted in a while but I hauled out a few for maintenance today including this old 19 with 7 spacers, BM and separate S.

Re: WWII #19... - 07/10/21 06:00 PM

My one and only 19-4.5, picked it up about a year ago, I'm guessing it's a late 60's early 70's knife, separate S, single black spacer. Kind of an ugly duckling compared to some here, but it suits me just fine.

No such thing as an ugly 19, George - nice knife.

New toy for the boy 19 in spalted wood.
Thanks Captain came at gorgeous!
Can't decide on a border patrol handle if I like the butt cap radiused or like this.
I like how this way it is more of a continuation of the handle, where the radiused makes the back end look like it's straightened.

It certainly is, and wtf is a "wandering" S? Who came up with that?

Re: WWII #19... - 08/29/21 11:47 AM

It wasn't me, Joe.

I may be known for describing a "fishtail" Model 24 as a "batwing" Model 24. wink

But the "wandering S" is on someone else's conscience.

I did not invent “Wandering S”, but what you call this one?

I would call it a Low "S" Rod.

There are a few strikes out there like that. I recently delivered an ivory #2-5 with a similar strike.

Re: WWII #19... - 08/29/21 05:59 PM

The "S" is just barely below being online with the logo on the above knife. Determining factor? Probably not. The model 2 grind was never conducive to a "good" low S strike. I would not use the sheath as an indicator of low S or seperate S. I have double SS #2s with baby dots. Double SS, low S, and seperate S may all be found in brown buttons or baby dots.

Here’s a link going back to 2007 Joe, looks like BoBlade “may” have been the originator??

I've always heard people refer to "Wandering S" as the short time period between the low S and Separate S.

damn mike, 2007! Apparently it didn't catch on, as it doesn't seem the "slippery S" mentioned did either. I wonder what Ron meant by "inside joke". If I think about it I will ask him, if he even remembers.

As I read a bit more, I ran across this post with just about everything in it being incorrect. The portions highlighted in red are wholly (first passage) and partially (second passage) simply bad info.

The only part that is somewhat true is you could get an earlier forging ON OCCASION, that had traits that had been stopped prior to delivery. Not uncommon in RMK's history. In this case, it is the "S" stamping orientation.

That highlighted in blue is kinda of like, what? Quite the economist with quite the imagination.

There is no separate "wandering" S period of time independent of other stampings. In other words, it is not a thing. It would best be described as an errant low S stamp. That is the period when these blades were forged.

Dubie,

Yes, you're correct on the first part...

As to the second part, you may want to differentiate between introduction and use dates, following the premise that when a new feature or characteristic was introduced it would subsequently supersede the previous feature or characteristic, with caveats...

Generally speaking, the 'Separate S' blade stamping method first used in mid 1967 was superseded with the 'Integral S' blade stamping method in mid 1972...but, as a caveat, during the high inflation and interest rate period of the late 1970's (you're old enough to remember those days), RMK, in lieu of purchasing as much new (high priced) steel as they may have in the past, IMO, instead dug a little deeper into the blade bins, utilizing a large number of older blade forgings in the process...

As an example; we purchased a 60+ RMK knife collection a few years back in which the majority of the knives were ordered and received between 1978 & 1980...at least five of those knives, possibly six, utilized older 'Separate S' blades. The 'Low S' blades introduced in early 1964 were used primarily through 1967, but we’ve seen 'deep bin' blades of this type used on knives that were built and sold well into the early to mid 1970's...

Anyhoo, I've got a trail to the lake to finish, hope that helped...
