Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 12/23/07 10:12 AM

Thanks to all that have posted thus far.

This week we shall look at the Model 12's Bear Bowie, Little Bear, and Sportsman's Bowie 9'' and 6''.

From Randall Made Knives: The History of the Man and the Blades by Robert L. Gaddis.

Quote:

...The first order for this knife [Bear Bowie] was recorded in the journal on 6 February 1964, with nine more orders following during the next six months. This is quite impressive for one of the most expensive Randall models, especially when it wasn't even listed in the current catalog! These orders... appear to have been the direct result of one magazine article.... in the February 1964 issue of Argosy Magazine....

Of the four pages, two contained color photographs of 14 different Randall knives, while the remaining two pages were pretty well covered by four large black-and-white pictures.... One of the smaller pictures on the second page of color photos is of an unusual Bowie-type knife with a uniquely attractive shape to the blade. Sand's caption read: "A hefty college student ordered this rugged Bowie knife because he wanted to kill a bear with its 8-inch blade." All evidence indicates that this one color picture and short description led to a flurry of inquiries at Randall, the firm orders for expensive knives we spoke of, and also gave a name to this suddenly popular, previously unknown style of Randall knife -- the Bear Bowie. (pp. 212-213)

Quote:

The Model 12, 6-inch Little Bear Bowie was another new knife Randall knife introduced during this time frame. Bo always said that this small version of the Bear Bowie was adopted for much the same reasons as the 6-inch Sportsman's Bowie, i.e., the desire of customers for a similar blade shape in a small and handier size. The Little Bear was introduced in the eighteenth printing of the catalog in 1967. Its standard features included a single guard hilt of brass and a leather-washer handle and aluminum butt cap shaped like the Model 3 and 4 hunting knives.... This model has remained popular over the years, and the blade shape has been copied by a few factory-made cutlery lines. (pp.227-228)

Quote:

9-inch Sportsman's Bowie These new models first appeared in a catalog when the revised and expanded edition came off the press in May 1954. Besides the original two bowies with 11-inch blades, a third style was included in the bowie lineup on page 7. It is a shorter version of the 11- by 1 7/8- by 1/4-inch style, with a blade length of only 9 inches....

In January 1959, when Bo gave names to the bowie styles for inclusion in the twelfth printing catalog, he called this one "9-inch Sportsman's Bowie." Quite a number of outdoorsmen had purchased this style, to use as a heavy-duty camp and field knife, so he named it for the men who were using it. (p. 136)

Quote:

This "Sketch of #12-6"" is undoubtedly the origin of the 6-inch Model 12 Sportsman's Bowie that first appeared in the twelfth printing of the catalog, and it is interesting to see that it started out with a double hilt.... Very few of these small bowies are recorded in the journals until after this model was first offered in the twelfth printing of the catalog. When this edition came into circulation early in 1959, orders began to arrive quickly. Bo always maintained that this 6-inch model was added to the line because of interest in a bowie-type blade of usable size for general outdoor activities. The rapid response shows that, once again, he had offered a knife style that men wanted. (p. 160)

Lady and gentlemen may we please some Bear and Sportsman Bowies.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah and Happy New Year to all.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 12/23/07 12:31 PM

Here's 3 #12-6's... the first two are Sportsman's Bowies, examples of fairly recent work from the RMK shop. I thought the leather handled one was unique in that it had a double guard. The brass butt cap, in my oppinion, is perfect for balancing the weight of the 6 inch blade.

The other is an older model with a nice fat piece of stag for the handle. I got this one a couple years or so ago when I started getting interested in older models. I let a fellow member add this one to his collection a few months ago. I do not know the age of this one or I would elaborate a bit more for you.

The third one is a Little Bear with an elephant ivory handle. The N/S butt cap makes the weight balance quite nicely as mentioned with the brass on the first one.

A Little Bear Bowie With a Twist - 12/23/07 04:26 PM

Model #12, 6" Little Bear Bowie with Modified Handle

Some of you guys probably saw this knife on Ebay many months ago. I bid on the knife primarily because I liked the knife and was a bit intrigued with the modified butt even though I was fairly confident the modification was not done by the Randall Shop. At the time I purchased this knife I did not know all that much about Randall Knives and even though the Ebay seller did not insinuate that the modification was done by the shop, the description did not rule out that possibility either. At the same time I was confident the basic knife was genuine Randall and would maintain a reasonable value because of that. If I had been participating in this forum at the time of the auction as I do now I would have been all over this.

It is quickly apparent that the butt end of the knife is not standard. The most obvious feature is the gold coin affixed to the butt end. This is a 1999 Liberty Head Gold Piece. 1/10 oz. 22K Gold The modified butt plate starts with a brass spacer, a layer of pure silver then the gold piece. With current gold prices at $800+ per oz. The coin by itself would have a melt-down value of $80 or so.

Within a month or so after receiving the knife I took it to the Randall Shop for evaluation. Gary, Jason and Scott all handled this knife with Gary being the first to look at it. Gary immediately stated that the gold coin was not a shop modification and went on to confirm the blade to be a genuine with a butt end modification and possibly an entire re-handle job but not necessarily. He also verified that the material below the coin was in fact silver and not duralumin. The best guess was that the coin was attached with epoxy. What impressed me the most was that rather than criticizing the work they all complimented the quality of workmanship involving the modification with Gary even commenting that it was an attractive knife.

So now, this is my Novelty Randall Knife. On the positive side, it is an attractive Randall Knife and if the price of gold continues to rise it could add considerably to the value of the knife. Although I do not intend to sell the knife in the immediate future, if and when I do you can bet that it will be accurately described which is another reason I am posting it here for all to see. There will be no guess work the next time around. For curiosity sake I would love to know who did the modification so if anyone has an idea please come forward.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 12/24/07 03:03 PM

Like Doug, I've posted this before but it's still kinda cool. This is a miniature 12-8" Big Bear. It originally carried black micarta but in 1987 Tom Leschorn took it to another level. Tom re-handled this 12-8" mini with Mammoth ivory he got while he was in Alaska. He carved my falcon logo in a relieved ellipse and filled the negative space with gold nuggets he panned himself. The butt cap is pinned and the furniture is carved in Tom's Ivy pattern.

One of my favorites. Model 12-8 Big Bear Bowie. Dated to late 80's to early 90's with plain snaps on the sheath. The thing that strikes me as different on this Big Bear is the extra long tapered snout on this blade. Much more tapered than most I have seen. It is also a very long knife. The blade is just over 8 1/4" long and with the flanged butt cap the total length is well over 13".

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 12/28/07 12:24 AM

JP, it's funny because out of all the 12-6's that I have that one looks like it has a broader blade than the others, plus the handle seems larger than the one below it. Also, the Randall stamp is closer to the hilt than the other 2 are. It was the 3rd Randall that I purchased and I've since really come to appreciate the Model 12's. All I need to find for it is a correct Vietnam era JRB sheath and stone. I've been told that the differences are proof that Randalls are hand made knives and no two are alike.

This 12-8 Crown Stag Bear Bowie came my way sometime last year from a dealer who had just received it from the shop. This is the knife that really got me off and running for more crown stag handled Randall's. The antler on this knife is massive and is a handful. As far as I know this was shop crown stag. It is one of several favorite knives in my collection.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 05/16/09 07:10 PM

Warren,
The shop has not supplied crown for the past 25 years. Your "dealer" probably, like me, supplied it to the shop.
When Gary Randall sold me the crown stag for the "Glades Hunters" it was a seperate purchase, in order to get the project going sooner. Otherwise I would have had to buy it at the shows or from a supplier. I didn't mind doing that, but I knew GTR would make sure the crown was the correct diameter for the project. As it is, out of the 50 odd pieces, 6 have been too small, thus far, with some more to submit.
Also: Even though my crown stag came from the shop, it was still submitted by me and I was charged accordingly for "CW" ($55) extra per knife.
By the way: Incredible knife!...Good match, that crown and #12-8...
Best, Capt. Chris

That Big Bear is a real beauty for sure. The very first RMK I acquired was a Big Bear with Stag & AL&Blk spacers and is a keeper to this day. I am very partial to the Big Bear model. I would say yours with that beautiful Crown is one of the best I ever have seen. You did good to grab that baby.

Tom,

I've seen your 12-8's and yours are great knives. This model is truly classic and I've always been very fond of the blade shape. Like yours, mine is very much a keeper. Thanks again.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 06/07/09 05:07 PM

One of my favorite purchases from this year's Blade Show is this 12-8 Bear Bowie. This was just one of those lucky finds at the right time. The handle is Ivory Fossil, N/S hilt, aluminum butt cap both engraved by Skaggs. The roughback sheath dates this knife somewhere in the 80's. This one will be with me for a very long time.

Thanks to Randall Made Knives for making such a great knife. Clinton Knives for taking my knife order and selling me this knife. And, David Francis (Chief) for finding me the musk ox.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 08/15/10 06:44 PM

Very cool hilt. I don't know what Randall calls it but it looks kind of like a combination of a lugged hilt and a forward curved double hilt. It's also reminiscent of a martial arts weapon called a sai. It's a true fighting knife hilt.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 11/13/10 09:09 AM

So...I bought a Smithsonian several years ago for a very good price even though it had a walnut handle which was not exactly what I was after. I knew that sooner or later I would ask the shop to rehandle it but never got around to it. When I finally decided what I wanted on it the shop was no longer accepting orders for changing handles except when warranty issues required it. So...there I was with an OK Walnut handled Smithsonian but not really what I was after. What to do? I talked with an old friend of mine who is a master ivory carver and asked him if he would carve a Native American out of a block of ivory for me. He said that he would so I called David Warther, got a big ass block of ivory, took off the walnut handle, cut down the tang, put on the block of ivory and sent it to my pal for him to do his creative thing. I Received the knife yesterday, and to say that I am ecstatic over the results would be understatement. The image is intended to represent a "generic" Western Plains Native American of no specific tribe.

The sculptor's name is Dennis Holland. Dennis enjoys a worldwide reputation for his detailed ivory carvings for individual gun and knife collectors, custom gun and knife makers, and some commercial enterprises as well which he has allowed to machine duplicate some of his carvings in less expensive handgun grip material.

Doug

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 11/13/10 10:46 PM

Skip-

I think you mean this one. Rick used a walrus tip for the handle and David Perdue did the engraving and gold inlay. I think the skull which Rick scrimshawed on it is a steer. When I had it the scrimshaw was unsigned. It's changed hands a few times since I owned it and I think that at some point it was returned to Rick to be signed. Personally, I liked the uniqueness of an unsigned Bowles scrimshaw, but....different strokes for different folks I guess.

It seems the same quality finish and attention to small details that you expect and find on the smaller blades exists with no drop-off on the BIG Models. From the blade grind through the hilt solder joint to the finesse of the handle.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 08/07/11 12:30 PM

As promised, I submit my "Sun Valley Patrol" for review.
What is funny is that I did not know what to do with this knife when sorting through my fathers collection. I figured it was some kind of custom screw up of a perfectly good Randall.....much to my suprise it turned out to be what it is.....
Did not know untill I listed it on the bay, and a nice fellow told me what it was.
At the time of listing, it kicked up a bit of rucus on the forum as to it's authentication...well, it is authentic per Perry.
I'm sending it the Greg to get a sheath, as none was found. Greg said the he could make a sheath somewhat typical as what would have been available at the time.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 08/07/11 08:42 PM

Rocky--

Very interesting knife. In the old days they had time to do unusual and customer-spec knives--is this part of a limited run or what? I suspect others would also like to know the background on it.

Thanks,
Larry

Rick,
You are right. I had not thought about it, however I checked Perry's write-up and there it was.
Larry,
You can find information about this knife in the Gaddis book. Page 213. It, as reorted in the book, was the start of the "Bear Bowie".

I just received the word that my Model 12-9 "14 Grind" Sportsman Knife with Stainless Steel, Nickle Silver Forward Curved Double Hilt, and #25 Handle (NS Hilt and Alum Butt) will arrive after the normal 5 year wait.

Next up will be a similar Model #12-9 but with the 'old School' look. Carbon Steel, Bowie Clip Point, Leather Handle, and Brass Hilt and Butt. Should be a nice set.

Arrived today via UPS
4 years 10 months from order date....and worth the wait
I will now be receiving one every 3 to 6 months...which brings me to a question, which may require a new thread....how many knives do you have on order direct from Randall.
It's hard to see, however the stag handle has a nice little swell that hits the plam just right, feels great in the hand.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 12/25/12 02:34 PM

VERY NICE knives I particularly like the lugged hilts in Silver they seem to be larger than the shop Brass ones and thicker as well. Also I don't think the shop does lugged in nickel silver so if you see that color on a lugged hilt it's probably 100% silver. By the way is 100% silver readily available these days?

(Maybe the Capt or someone else can verify that my impression is correct or not about n/s and lugged hilts?)

Jim, those knives are gorgeous. I'm no expert either, but that might be California Buckeye burl on that first handle. Really sweet. The first knife in that set of three is a stunner as well. Do you know who did the scrim of the Gyrfalcon on the handle? I love the way the artist used the natural colors in the handle to represent the cliff the bird is sitting on. Here is a Bear Bowie I just acquired. It appears to be a knife with seven spacers. Too bad the spacers are so faded. This came from a group of knives that had been neglected for many years. I'm lucky the blade isn't all rusty! Unfortunately, the original sheath was either lost or severely damaged in years past and did not accompany the knife.

Tune - Yes, I bought them as a pair. Unfortunately, the seller had lost one of the sheaths and I've been looking for a correct one ever since. The problem is the forward curved hilts. I've come across several sheaths of the correct size and age, but never one that would fit the forward curved hilt.
I like 'em anyway, though!

Re: New arrival -- Bear Bowie - 08/30/15 07:15 PM

I was going through my collection recently recording some little details on the knives and I pulled out this Little Bear Bowie. It's the only one I have (other than 1950's and 1960's knives) that has the exposed nut on the butt. Not exactly sure when this one was made, but it came with a Sullivan's sheath with the logos on the snaps so it is relatively "young". Why does it have the exposed nut?

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 10/09/15 07:46 PM

Rick Bowles scrimmed Model 12-6" Little Bear Bowie. Here is some background history that I received from Rick himself:

In March of 1981 I received the first ten blades to scrimshaw for Randall Made Knives. By March of 1982, one year later, I had scrimshawed fifty Randall knives. Though the models varied, all of those early scrimshawed knives were handled in white Westinghouse paper micarta. This synthetic handle material, called Ivorite by the Randall shop, ultimately earned the nickname "Old Yeller" due to it's characteristic of yellowing dramatically over time. These early knives were made specifically for me to scrimshaw and could be identified by a special black and white spacer combination.

The first ten knives I scrimshawed for Randall were model #3's. The second ten, like yours, were model #12 Little Bears. The following ten were model #8 Trout and Bird.

I've always enjoyed doing birds of prey and your knife (#020) is supposed to be a juvenile red tail hawk. While it is honest work and the best I could do at the time, it's difficult to look at 35 years later! I've attached images of #001 which is in the Randall museum and a more contemporary piece which hopefully shows I've progressed over the years!

A couple of spectacular Fossil Ivory 12-8 Bear Bowies.
The first, a 12-8 Bear Bowie, SS, N/S Hilt, BAS, ancient artifact walrus tusk w/fire bowl. The end shape no doubt a chisel in its time. The color is amazing.

The second a 12-8 Bear Bowie, SS, N/S Hilt and Collar, Huge Fossil Handle, N/S Butt Cap. This is one handful and quite heavy.

Thanks Tom

A few of us got together and did a 3 knife set a few years back.
That one is my "Armor of GOD" knife. The shop put that on the side of the blade for us.
We all did different handle materials on this one.
The other 2 are the same for each man.
We couldn't agree what to do on the sheathes, we finally got smart and asked Greg at Gutchers & he nailed it for us!

I forgot I had this picture. I believe Scott took this when the set of knives was made.
As Chief mentioned this was the 3rd knife in the Christian men's series; Armor Of God. Each had a handle configured to our choosing. Each came with the custom Gutcher basket weave sheath with the cross concho. Most if not all of the handle material was Clinton supplied.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 04/01/16 10:03 AM

Tom,

Hope I'm not straying too far off topic. The first knife was the 19-5 named Christian Soldier, these were all configured the same with shop ironwood, N/S hilt, all black spacers and a N/S rounded butt cap. The second knife a model 3-7 was named Good Shepherd , same hardware and spacers but Chief supplied the buckeye burl handle material. Each knife had the custom Gutcher black basket weave sheath with the cross concho. In addition, each knife came in a custom black zippered case.
These were made so anyone could order these if they chose. Greg had ample supply of the concho's at the time when he was making custom sheathes on a regular basis. I think you will see some of the other knives if you go to the Knife of the Week threads 19 & 3.

Pictures of both the knife and sheath along with the stone will help with valuation. Condition is everything. Hope you follow-up.
Perhaps it would be better to start a new thread in the Randall Knife Forum and not Knife Of The Week.

I like that on stag better than a butt cap. It leaves the stag all the way to the end.
Grinding the stag to line up with the butt cap takes away from the stag to me, now wood that's a different story!

I have a question, where is the point of equilibrium
of #12-8 Bear Bowie with Stag and double hilt without butt cap,
more precisely the difference between him and
#12-8 with stag, double hilt with duralumin or brass/NS butt cap?

Help, please, tell, where he can be on those
and other configurations smile

Not sure if this helps you and its by no means scientific but I did my best at some quick snapshots.
Pic1: N/S double hilt & collar, stag, N/S butt plate.
Pic2: Brass FCH, brass collar, paper ivorite handle, brass flanged cap
Pic3: Brass FCH,brass collar, musk ox handle, brass coolie cap
Pic4:N/S FCH, N/S collar, musk ox handle, N/S cap

I have other examples that are so handle heavy the cg is wayyyy back.

Hello my fellow Randall collectors,

This is my first post on this forum. I learned about Randall Made Knives through the Hickok 45 YouTube channel.

I ordered this knife (my first Randall) from Nordic Knives. I received these pictures in advance, in a week or so my knife should be delivered. I think the knife looks great and I am very satisfied with the way it turned out. The handle of this Sportsman 12-9 Bowie is Desert Ironwood. The Hilt and Butt Cap are Nickel Silver.

I look forward to spending time here. Lots of interesting posts to read and beautiful knives to admire!

A lot of people here love the United States. Thanks to you we are speaking Dutch and not German! I also love the fact that you have such great gun laws, which is a sign of a truly free society in my opinion. I am a memeber of the NRA, it is nice that even non Americans are accepted.
Here you can own guns, but you can only shoot them at the range. You have to go to a LOT of effort and regulation to get your permit. Guns need to be placed in a gunvault at home, with the ammunition separated. Every year you must prove that you went to the range a minimum of 18 times. You can own a maximum of 5 guns per person.

I have been to America and visited Miami and Orlando. In the future I will go a lot more. it is my favorite country to visit.
Fortunately plane tickets are cheaper then they used to be so it is more affordable to go. When I visited Orlando in february 2015 I've never heard of Randall Knives (I am ashamed of myself, LOL)
Then Hickok 45 made this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFYSvtMtBpk and I was in love with the knife. So I have been in Orlando and not visited the shop, that sucks!

I did not knew that dealers sold Randall knives and ordered exactly this "Hickok 45" Smithsonian from the Randall shop. It is scheduled to be delivered in march 2022, haha. I have ordered one more Smithsonian, with Amboyna Burl and Silver hardware from Captain Chris Stanaback. It should be ready in March/April. The Smithsonian will have exactly the same stuff on it, as this beatiful 12-9 (14 grind). http://www.captainchrisstanabackrandallknives.com/index.php?/main/catalog/982 After that I am broke and need to save money for the next one laugh

I think you will like it. In the summer we have mostly nice weather with sometimes a little bit of rain. We have a flat country and lots of canals. We also have lots of beautiful old buildings and windmils.

Tourists also like to visit "De Keukenhof" where all kinds of Tulips grow. I never been there, haha. We are below sealevel and made a part of my land of a piece of the ocean. There is a saying that God created the world and we The Netherlands. People like my grandfather used to walk on wooden shoes and some people stil do, (maybey 1% of the people). We are also famous for cheese making.

Prostitution is legal and so is weed wich atracts a lot of young people. When you visit the redlight district located almost in the center of Amsterdam, you think you are in a madhouse Lots of drunk and crazy people alongside with normal folks doing there shopping. I live in the north where things are much more calm. Not so many people and more space. If you want some tips for your holiday you can always PM me.

My wife and I love your country. Amsterdam is very easy to get around in, walking. The people are friendly and we always felt safe. Walking through the red light district is something everyone should do. Yes, I may have left my nose print on some of the windows from ogling, but hey, that is just another life experience.

Did some biking, got some wooden shoes, drove across the Zeider Zee (sp), took in Arnhem, Utrecht and the Hague. It is weird to be driving on a road and look to one side and see a ship ABOVE you! Loved it all.

Welcome Sphinz3000,

I have visited Holland many times and my Daughter and Son in Law would go to Holland every spring for the last 3 years. I was in Den Helder in the 70's. and of course Amsterdam (Canal street) I was in the Navy, had to see the giant dig dong LOL. anyway I digress. I really like Holland in the spring and fall. I must say the food was fantastic, along with the Beer.
Great to have you in the Forum.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 11/15/17 06:10 AM

Thanks for the welcome, great to be on the forum!

I love reading how you guys experienced Holland! @ Billy Poyner, we have some nice women here, but Oekraïne is the number one in Europe with almost only beautiful women. Been there once, wow! I did mention the cheese, LOL.

@ rodbrown sounds like you saw a lot of our country. Last time I was in Amsterdam I saw two bars with one prostitute behind glass in the middle. It was a hot day and the bars had there terraces crowded with lots of people, sitting there, enjoying the sun and drinking a beer or something else. A guy walks straight to the prostitute passing all those people ( more then a 100) and nobody even looks up, haha

Meanwhile another guy passed by with a fhishing rod on his shoulder and goes casual fishing, in on of the canals in the middle of the redlight district.

I am from the north, visited Amsterdam a lot of times but even I amaze myself when I see stuff like that.

@maxpaster, I have been to Den Helder and the marine base, thanks for your service! I like the spring also , the fall has nice colours, but it is the start of a wet, cold and long winter. I am always glad when it is May and nature comes back to life.

When you all visit again and want to know something (or looking for the best cheese for the lowest price :D) I will gladly help!

Thanks RamKingJC

My first #1-7 arrived today.

There's a '60's #1-8 winging its way over from your side of the pond as I write.

I bought another #1-7 along with a #12 Bear Bowie today, and by the time I was offered a very tempting '60's #1 with a Floyd Bird sheath and two immaculate stag handled #4's a 6" and a 4", I'd run out of money and had to say no before the wife found out what I was up to.

I asked the captain if he can take a few pictures of the knife to put on this forum ( I am not that great with a camera) The captain agreed and is gonna post them here.

I am really Looking forward to having this knife in my hands. It will be my first Smithsonian and second Randall. I have never seen a Model #12-Heavy in real life, so I am exited to say the least laugh

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 11/28/18 11:05 AM

I have been guilty of having too much handle material. True story! Sphinx's Bowie is an example of (what I have called, for years) "Exhibition-Grade IW". Some of you old timers might remember these pieces. 8 1/2 years ago I featured them in a "wood-wheel" on this very forum, after I returned from the 2010 Blade show.
Stabilization works well on many exotic woods but, in the case of ironwood, I prefer to wait for some time before I rush in and make RMKs with it. (I guess enough time has passed)...

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 11/28/18 11:40 AM

My text is really small?

This is what I typed for people with bad eye side. Those are some pretty blocks, especially the left one. I have been buying Ironwood myself for the future. I can't let them be made into knife handles all at the same time, because it would be an expensive deal. I like these the best of the ones I have. These are matching blocks. They are big enough for one Smithsonian and/or a 12-9 #14 Grind.

There you are - Narwhal skin sheath.

"Narwhals also differ from belugas in skin color. Narwhals have black and white mottled skin. Appearing to resemble the bodies of drowned soldiers, the name narwhal derives from the old Norse word nar meaning corpse" - animalfactguide.com

That is the first time I have seen that explanation of the name.

I just received two Model 12-9"-#14 Sportsman's Bowies in the same description as yours, except black sheaths.

They are handy in the woods.

The knife was as new, although 20+ years old and was handled in the white micarta crap that the shop used for a year or 2. It was cracked from stem-to-stern! Mike: You saw the knife. It is mo'-betta' now!
Thanks, Capt. Chris
PS: Great blade stamp as well...CCS

Capt. Chris--

That's a bobby dazzler!

Which is what Mr. Drayton says about neat finds as they work the Oak Island exploration on TV...which my wife watches every week.

Neat knife, and a handful of handle.

I just received this fine pair of super shop workmanship from the good Captain Chris moments ago. This was with handle material from my personal stash. Unfortunately this was it of the gold micarta that I had. Not sure if was the same as the shop AGM, but they turned out great.
Standard sheaths for both.

Don't tell Billy where I live however smile

Peter

Thanks again Cap and the shop guys, and I hope the shop guys get well soon.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 02/10/21 11:00 AM

I hope that the insertion of the photos has been done correctly.
This is a my friend's 12-9 (from the 80s, I think) that I would like to buy.
Unfortunately the father kept it in the sheat hanging on the wall, and the light darkened the micarta handle.
only part of the handle remained clear, as you can see.
I have two questions:
1) can the handle be returned to its original light color? how could this be done?
2) what value could this knife have?

Thanks in advance for the answers you can give me.

Hello Andrea, and welcome from a fellow European!

The question about value I would gladly leave to others here who are much more knowledgeable.

The question about the darkened Micarta I can answer as a knife maker of 42 years. You can only remove the darker color by removing some of the material, and it depends on the Micarta how deep the darkening has gone. In my experience it can easily be 2 mm. I don't know if that would be desirable, to me it would not be. What's more: you cannot keep the material from darkening, because it darkens because of UV light.

Personally I would expose the lighter part of the handle to sunlight, so the lighter part becomes as dark as the darker part. My 2 cents.

A beautiful Sportsman's Bowie by the way.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 02/10/21 05:21 PM

You can send it to a knife maker and have them sand it down. It will darken again, but you can make sure it does it evenly. I had a scrim removed from the pictured knife. It turned out well I think. I was lucky to get Don Hedrick to do it.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 02/11/21 01:56 AM

Thanks Gert,
also I think it’s the only way.
But what do you think about a scrimshaw in the lighter part of the handle? Something like a trout that jumps out of the water ...

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 02/11/21 02:01 AM

Eric,
who sanded the handle did a very great job, beautiful knife!
My fear is that if the dark color is 2mm deep I risk to change the shape of the handle loosing the original profile of all the knife; and also its value.
Thanks for you reply!

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 02/11/21 10:26 AM

A good Scrimshaw is always nice. But I think the lighter part will darken over time if exposed to light.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 12 - 02/11/21 11:00 AM

If you slowly sand it with 200 grit to get the color, then work up to 400 grit, then possibly a bit finer, you will be able to refinish it. I have done it.

Worst case after that take it to a knife maker for a touch up.

Work slow....

Don Hedrick did a wonderful job. At 83 I was surprised he wanted to do it. I am thrilled. The scrim was insipid.

This pair of Bear Bowies arrived Saturday for my local customer, who focuses on Model 12-8's. I think these brings him up to 84 Bears.

These two are sporting nickel-silver "furniture", and David Warther's resin ivory, "S" grade. Impressive handle material.

Very nice pair. You and Eric are making it tough on me with the resin ivory. I'm really liking the looks of it!
