Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 12/16/07 08:58 AM

Thanks to all that have posted thus far.

From Randall Made Knives: The History of the Man and the Blades by Robert L. Gaddis, pp. 126-130

Tommy Thompson, the designer of the Model 11 Alaskan Skinner, was an Alaskan bush pilot and hunting/fishing guide who became friends with Mr. Randall and the Randall family.

Quote:

Tommy wanted a blade shape that not only was good for skinning but also would greatly reduce the chances of cutting into the intestinal cavity while making an initial cut up the animal's belly.... The idea of having the top of a hunting knife blade slope down slightly from hilt to point was not totally new... What was unique at this date of February 1952 was a drop-point style on a handy-size knife with only a 4- or 4 1/2-inch, relatively thin blade. All this and a contoured area on top for thumb placement equaled a major breakthrough in the practical hunting knife field.

Wanting a sure, firm grip for cold, slippery hands, Tommy even included finger grips in the handle.... Before any of these Thompson Skinners were made, Tommy decided upon a few modifications to his Plan Number 1 sketch. First, he lengthened the blade by 1/2 inch, then he changed the leather handle to stag, plus he replaced the regular aluminum butt cap with one of a "crow's beak" shape.

Bo liked Tommy's second design so much that he immediately adopted it into his knife line....

From the current catalog:

Quote:

Model 11 "Alaskan Skinner" -- 4" blade of 3/16" stock, 4 1/2" and 5" blades of 1/4" stock. 4 1/4" - 5/8" leather handle. Brass hilt. Duralumin butt cap. (New model #11-3 1/4" is standard with stag handle. See Non-Catalogue II Brochure.) The original drop-point blade. Designed by Tommy Thompson, noted Alaskan guide, in 1952 for big-game skinning, with point dropped below top of blade to prevent cutting too deeply through skins when used point first. Top of blade in front of hilt notched for thumb placement.

I think that the Model 11 is a great knife. I am hoping that Pappy will show us his. And after Burnie shot his great Whitetail earlier this year a Model 11 3 1/4'' was his Randall of choice.
Lady and gentlemen may we please see some Model 11's.
Thanks,
Kevin #5109

I'm all most embarrassed to show this knife again, but it's the only model 11 I have. It's been re-handled some place along the line with petrified walrus tusk. My wife said I have to keep it because it now belongs to her.

I don't own this one. Only have a photo of it. IMO they don't come much better unless you're talking about the original made for Tommy Thompson that I believe now resides in the Randall Shop museum.

Here are three from my collection. From left 11-4 late 80's early 90's this knife is engraved by Jim Wallace and is headed to the randall shop for an Ivory inlay and scrim by Rick Bowles. Next is a late 50's 11-4 1/2 with Heiser sheath. On the right is a 11-5 7-spacer stag w/JRB tight stitch sheath. The model 11 is one of my all time favorites!

Model 11's are one of my favorites. I just think that this blade shape is very unique and unlike any other. As a hunter you couldn't ask for a better skinning knife with the drop point blade and the thumb rest. I just received this 11-4.5 today from a private seller. I believe it is of recent release from the shop. This 7 option knife is just one drop dead beauty. The stag on this one is one of the finest stag handles in my collection. Lucky strike.

Thanks Warren

A user? Probably not, I prefer smaller blades and I have a #26 and a lovely little GTR as users.

When I go hunting I allways throw in a spare knife and its usually a larger and unsued one, so you never know, it might get some use one day.

Ya' know, Rhett...and others:
It took me a good, long time to warm up to the Model #11. I never cared for the "cut-out thumb notched" knife blade design. Well: All of that has changed and it changed decades ago! I love 'em! Just as other folks have their "pet" model Randall knives, so do I...and The Alaskan Slinner is definately on my short list. Thanks to you Rhett, and all others for posting such fantastic examples here!

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 03/08/09 07:56 PM

Dubie,

This not a criticism, I'm just wondering why you said that? I feel that the Model 11 is one of the most unique if not best skinning blades ever made. When you pick one up it becomes obvious. I had a dealer at the ECCKS tell me the same thing 2 weeks ago. Everyone is entitled to their own choices. That leaves more of those "ugly" knives for me!

Best,
Warren

PS: I may have taken your comments out of context. Like I said no criticism.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 03/08/09 09:49 PM

Actually, I had the same reaction to the #10. I was a #5, then #7 fan for hunting/skinning. I obtained a #10 and used it on 3 elk in 2007 and it was fantastic. I bought a #3-6 and hoped to use it this past hunting season, but I didn't get a shot at any elk...too many wolves and a bad winter helped to drop our local herd by 40%. Still, I really liked how the #10 worked under 3 elk. I did the Diamond sharpener routine twice for 3 elk, with the carbon steel #10, and I have alot of praise for how it performed. A new respect for it from me.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 03/12/09 10:33 PM

Model 11's in "any" blade length are just about my perfect description of a true hunting blade. You couldn't ask for more or want less. Pictured are two 11-3, stag with compass, in alternate hilt/ material combinations. The middle knife has a Hutch scrim of a 10 point buck. The top knife is the original Nordic Drop Point Dealer special. The brass hilt on this knife is considerably larger than the 11-3 as we know it today and changes the entire look and feel of the knife.

Warren

A batch of great Randalls in this thread. I just wanted ya'll to see a fairly standard Model #11-4 1/2" that I picked up in my order last week. Nothing extremely special...No "favors" asked for, nor received (not that it happens anyway)...no CW (customer-supplied) material...just a hell of an example of the Randall shop's work, with a hell of a piece of amber stag! This is a very cool 11-3 with a Walrus artifact fossil handle. These Walrus tusks were used as net weights thus the two holes in the handle. Another knife that I just had to own. There may be some but not many like this with the net weight handles.

Captain,

I believe you used the name "Green Musk Ox" to define this handle color. Is the color difference natural or is it dyed during stabilization? I saw that knife at the show, it looked very nice.

Ken,

I am normally not a big fan of Brass furniture, but I have to admit that it goes extraordinarily well with Ironwood. And, the Brass and Black spacers add to the overall effect.

I know I'll probably take some flak on this one but this was one of those that I aquired in a trade. I don't have any other knives in Yellow Micarta and this 11-5 seemed really nice. I wouldn't mind a companion knife someday in black with the same options.

This Model 11-4 is one that I just had to have from the moment. The ivory on this knife I'll tell ya is better than my pics. Smooth as silk and yet has enough color for perfect contrast. With all the Model 11's I have in my collection, this is the first one in a 4" blade. Just a perfect knife in all sense of the word. I'm just happy it's mine and it's here to stay. I hope you enjoy these pictures as much as I'm enjoying my knife.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 07/26/09 07:38 PM

Hey Cap, found one!!!

Got lucky this week and picked up a once owned early 70's Model 11-4. This one has several unique features that I find interesting. For starters, if you look at the stamp you'll notice that it's not hot stamped, but rather an etched stamp with a separate "S". Another interesting feature is the blade thickness. Usually 11-4's are made with 3/16" stock; this one is closer to 1/4" in fact I compared this blade to other larger 11-4.5 and 11-5's that I have and this blade is nearly as thick as it's big brother. The extra weight gives this knife a little more heft but is nicely balanced. This knife may have started out as a 11-4.5 and may have been re-ground into a 4" blade, who knows? The original owner purchased this knife over the counter in the 70's and it has his name etched on the blade. Overall a really nice unused 35+ year old Randall with nice stag and a tight-stitch JRB sheath. A nice find!

Best,
Warren

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 07/26/09 10:17 PM

One of the reasons I asked is that I had an older 70's #11 along with an early Stanaback Special stolen from a UPS ship back to me from the Shop and the #11 was one just like yours. Are you sure the etching doesn't say Mike Allen on it?? I still have the JRB sheath........no, I see your's has a "John...." something, etched on the blade. I guess you're safe!! Actually, I had sent the #11 back to the shop to get the original owner's name taken off, and a compass & WT put on, along with the Stanabak Special, WT put on it. They both were stolen from the UPS shipment. Gary replaced them both, but I had a #25 instead of the Stanaback shipped. Long story.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 07/26/09 10:23 PM

Mike,

I felt bad just reading your story. It happens, and that's why insurance is necessary even though "knock wood" I've never had the misfortune. That said, I'm glad Gary replaced your knives but it is a lesson learned.

A new 11-4 came in the post this week.
It's the one that resembles a candle stick
White micarta, not Ivory. Unfortunately ivory is very hard to import into Australia.
I think it needs a bit of scrim of my favorite game animal, a Sambar Stag, to dress it up a bit.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 02/13/10 06:35 PM

Hi guys,
Rocky, that is a good looking knife, nice looking stag handle too. Any chance of seeing that handle a little closer? Thanks.
Guys,I have been trying to find out approximately when Randall changed from squaring the stamp to the spine, as done on the older #11 Randall's, to squaring it to the grind line? I also notice that the modern ones have rounded top guards, and the older ones had square tops.
The model 11 has become one of my favorites also, it has a great story on the development, then again, don't they all?
Thanks guys for the imput.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 02/13/10 08:13 PM

Thanks Capt Chris,
What I was trying to ask, is, I know that the early 50's model 11's had the Randall stamp up higher and square with the spine of the blade, and at some point, the stamp was then struck lower, and square along the grind line. I was just wondering if anyone has any idea as to when the stamp changed its place on the blade.
Thanks again Capt for the info.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 02/13/10 09:13 PM

I'll see if I can find out, with regards to the trademark, but your post also appeared that you thought the squared top hilt was a "goner".
Best, Capt. Chris
Posted by: samg

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 02/13/10 11:16 PM

Thanks again Capt Chris,
Sorry about the confusion on the hilt. My primary question is in regards to the placement of the Randall Stamp, but as to the question on the hilt...has it always been an option either way, square top or rounded, or was the square top hilt standard for the early 11's with the rounded being available later on?
Thanks again Capt for your time and research for this.
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 02/13/10 11:40 PM

In the early 1950's Model #11, "Alaskan Skinners", were supplied "both" ways also. The first drawings, submitted to the shop by Tommy Thompson showed what appeared to be a rounded hilt. The earliest photos in Bob G's book shows round, but squared hilts most certainly were shortly behind. They were indeed shown in most old catalog photos as well. Hope this helps...
Best, Capt. Chris
Posted by: samg

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 02/14/10 12:16 AM

Thanks again Capt Chris,
That does help as far as the hilt is concerned. Thank you. As to the orientation of the stamp, I would like to know if there was a point in time where the shop just changed the angle of the trade stamp on the blade on this particular model. Or was the decision to do so on this model just an arbitrary decision based on aesthetics?
Thanks again Captain for your responses and wanting to help out. It is a learning experience, out of a desire to learn as much as possible about these beautiful knives.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 06/14/14 10:02 AM

I found this Model 11 at the recent BLADE show. The person I got it from told me that he bought it new around 1971. Evidently, he put it away and never used it. I showed this knife to several friends at the show and David Loomis said that 1971 seemed pretty close. Honestly, I didn't notice that it was a seven spacer knife until David pointed it out to me. Another interesting feature is the brass nut on the pommel.

Finger grips were "not" standard...Thumb notches "were"...but, at this point, it really doesn't matter.

Thanks Capt. Chris!

I do not think that someone special grind a knife,
just often used and often sharpened.
This often occurs in old knives. Knife tool was expensive,
because was used until the end - until it transformation into awl.

Here's one of mine. Bought about 4 years ago. I supplied te handle material myself, a piece of moose horn from a big one shot in Sweden. Nickle silver guard and rounded nickel silver butt cap. I think the model 11 is a great all round using and hunting knife.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 11/10/15 10:53 AM

Snake,
No...It has been "extremely altered"! I have knives that have seen hard use, plenty of wear & tear. "BUT" (There's that word again) there would/could be no other explanation for this one you have shown, seeing as how 1/2" of the "TOP" of the knife has been altered, which would have nothing to do with any type of "usage".
Best, Capt. Chris
Posted by: Tattoo Bill

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 11/10/15 10:56 AM

I agree with the Capt. 100%. Personally, I would be embarrassed to have this among my Randall's......lol
Posted by: thevalueman

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 11/10/15 05:57 PM

Bill,
I wouldn't go that far....
If I had that knife, it would go the deer cabin, or fishing boat, and used...heavily...if it falls off the boat, or gets lost in the woods, there would be no remorse.
There is always some kind of use for an old Randall.
you should see one of my older filet knives(non Randall)...it's about "sharpened" out...

If the rain falls or spray.
I bought grangers g-wax and rubbed sheath,
heat of fire - wax absorbed. I repeated this 3 times.
(A bit of wax can be seen inside the button)
Interestingly, someone here else to do so and what kind wax use?

That was my Mod. 11 with the riveted sheath. I wasn't crazy about the 11....I didn't like the brass on brass. I bought it for the sheath. That was one of the neatest sheaths ever! One day last year Joe called me about the knife....wanting to buy it. I asked, "how the heck did you know I had it?" I think Joe and Mitchell have a sixth sense about these things. They turn up some dandies. At any rate I let Joe talk me out of it.

Rod,

It looks like green canvas micarta to me but I'm by no means the micarta expert. I believe I had several with that material an that's what it was. In addition, if I'm not mistaken it was dealer supplied. Nice 11, my favorite blade.

Here's some Randall "shop-supplied" green canvas micarta. Compare this to yours.
Hope this helps, Capt. Chris

Here is some eye candy for the discriminating Model #11 collector.

A "Build Board" featuring a stainless blade prior to finishing, four handle materials, hilt and spacers. It is very nicely framed and displayed.

This came form the McCotter collection.

Very cool.....

(it is already headed to a new home)

Re-posting here. Unused Late 1960's Model 11 5" Carbon Blade. Engraved Squared brass hilt and Brass Pommel. FWI has a couple of checks on one side. JRB with Yellow print 2 tone.

Sorry for the red refection on the blade from my camera light.

Thanks Warren, I know you love this Model RMK. If you would like, I can offer you first refusal on this one when I do decide to sell. DW has this deal with me concerning the Dave Griffin knives, when I sell those.

I'll take you up on that Eric. Thank you.

That's a great looking package - any idea who did the engraving?
Posted by: Eric

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 12/07/16 05:28 PM

Dwight, Its not marked. Not sure when the engraving was done either. 50 year old knife with no history other than it came from Tom Clinton originally.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 12/07/16 05:32 PM

Eric,

Is the cap bottom engraved too?
Posted by: Eric

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 12/07/16 05:38 PM

Warren no its not completely engraved, The hilt and pommel are only engraved on the outer edges.

It's certainly nice work whoever did the engraving. Gary might know, possibly Skaggs.

For some reason I don't like the model 11 unless it's a 5" blade. Just doesn't look right with out it. Idk why. ???

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 12/30/16 09:38 PM

Noooo... I am saying a display of your re handles, and also, a display of #11's.
Posted by: W Polidori

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 12/30/16 09:49 PM

Well right now I have just one rehandle so that's going to be a very small display. However I do have something in mind, we'll see.

Here is my first 11-5 Alaskan Skinner. I love the way the brass guard ramps right into the finger-grooves. Just fell in love with the knife when I first saw it.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 11 - 03/19/17 12:08 AM

Here is my # 11 and Fireman Special. I bought the 11 new on the net. Has a beautiful deep grooved stag handle, nickel silver hilt and butt plate. The Fireman I ordered from Randall. Purchased the orange G10 from Treeman. Had a slanted nickel silver hilt put on and of course the finger grooves, with black sheath. I have since visited Sullivan's in FL and had them make me a different sheath for the Fireman. Did not like the way the heavy Fireman handle leaned out in the normal hi rise sheath
