Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 12/09/07 08:34 AM

Thanks to all who have posted thus far. This week we will be looking at the Model 10, now called the Model 10 Salt Fisherman and Household Utility. It's a great knife for fishermen.

From Randall Made Knives: The History of the Man and the Blades pp. 118-119

Quote:

The Salt Fisherman and Household Utility made its appearance in the 1948 catalog and was the first standard model Randall made without a forged blade. It was made by what is called the stock-removal process, i.e., hand-ground from a piece of flat steel.... The postwar lineup of new knives had been lacking a replacement for the old one-piece, stainless steel fish knife, or Fish and Bar if there was a bottle opener ground into the back. Florida's many saltwater anglers liked the idea of a rustproof knife in their tackle box.

...Like all Randall designs, this knife had to be able to accomplish the intended tasks while holding up well under severe use. This included the handle as well as the blade. Leather doesn't last well when constantly soaked in saltwater, and for this knife, the handle should be two slabs riveted to a full-width tang. The grip also had to be as slip-proof as possible, even when held in wet, slimy hands. The final answer was to rivet duralumin pieces to the tang, grind them to shape, and then sandblast only the handle.

This left a rough, nonslip surface, which has worked fine ever since. Even modern dishwashers can't hurt this handle a bit. Just when the design jelled and became a standard isn't known, but the St. Petersburg man's fillet knife was shipped to him on 11 May 1948. With a shorter blade this became an excellent bait cutter and all-around tackle box knife. To answer both demands, the 1948 catalog listed it as available with either a 5- or 7-inch blade.

Lady and gentlemen may we please see some Model 10's.
Thank you,
Kevin #5109

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 12/09/07 10:25 AM

Here's a little older one, just got it after Thanks Giving, too late to hit the bird but xmas is coming...this is my first 10-7, I actually would've liked a new one but this one already had some scratches, use and didn't cost that much more, therefore also a guarantee it would stay in the kitchen and not end up in the safe. Can't say how many times I've bought a new Randall over the years with the intention of using it and never did, I'm sure I'm not alone out there. The blade is thicker and not flimsey like it may first appear(hope no one at the shop reads this), I still have new ones on order and wouldn't want them to mysteriously disappear, but when you think 1/8 inch, it even sounds so thin, my mistake, a very solid knife, I can only thank my ignorance for not checking them out sooner.

Rob, It'll be fun to use it at the table. Here's hoping you get many years of carving out of it.

Tony, What a great idea! I like those little fish.

Burnie, Where in the world did you find one in stag? Stoddard's was finding out if I could order one like that when things went south and no orders were submitted.

All are nice pics in my opinion...

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 12/09/07 02:09 PM

These are some miscellaneous notes that I’ve put together on the Model #10 series of knives – I haven’t done any additional research recently, so if you guys can help fill in the blanks here, or help narrow down some of the timeframes, I’d sure appreciate it: Introduced in 1948 as one of the first ‘Stock Removal’ knives made by Bo Randall, this slab-sided model is probably the only Randall knife model configured using this handle style, other than a few ‘special order’ knives made over the years, and the ‘Drop Point Hunter’ series of the late 1970’s & early 1980’s.

Traditionally made from stainless steel, no specific stainless ‘S’ indication was used on Randall Model #10’s prior to the mid 1970’s. Use of the ‘Integral S’ blade stamp on Model #10’s began sometime after 1974, but before 1979. Use of the angled blade stamp orientation on Model #10 knives began sometime in 1979. Originally made from 440B type stainless steel using the stock removal process, by early 1996, ATS-34 stainless steel was in regular production use for this RMK model.

Two handle pins and a lanyard hole on the 5” and 7” models indicates 440B steel; three handle pins and a lanyard hole on those models indicates ATS-34. The 3” model uses one pin for 440B steel knives, two pins for the ATS-34 versions. Collectors should bear in mind, however, that prior to the lanyard hole introduction in early 1988, three pins were standard for larger Model #10 knives, indicating 440B type steel; and, while ATS-34 is now in regular use on many of the smaller RMK stock removal models, its use is only specifically indicated as such on the Model #10 knives.

Micarta was an option on this model as early as 1964, although didn’t get much attention until later in the decade. Micarta became the standard handle material offered in the late 1980’s; at about the same time lanyard holes were introduced. Rosewood handle material had become a cataloged option for this model by 1974, as had Maroon Micarta. Today, if requested, both Rosewood and Aluminum handle scales are still available at no additional cost. (DW, is this still true?)

Standard configurations have traditionally used 5” and 7” blades, but a limited run of 4” models was also made during the late 1980’s. The earliest 4” blades used a traditional blade grind, with a drop point version soon following. The 3” version of this knife become available in 1984 with standard Model #10 type handles and Johnson ‘B’ model sheath; taking on its current contoured black Micarta handle shape in 1989. Variants with the then optional drop-point blade grind and pouch style sheath type were being delivered by 1991; this new blade grind and sheath type would soon become the standard for the model.

Handle materials have ranged from the standard catalog offerings to unusual shop supplied materials such as stag in the mid 1970’s and late 1980’s, and customer supplied materials such as the poly pearl and exotic wood handles that Randall dealer Jack Crider was noted for. Handle shapes have evolved over the years as well, the earliest aluminum handles had thumb notches. The Model #10 has also been used extensively as an experimentation platform; swedged false-edges, double-edged, and sawtoothed configurations have all been seen, along with the use of hilts on a limited number of knives.

With regards to the age of any specific knife, in addition to the various blade grinds, steel type, and handle configurations - the sheath type, provided that it’s original to the knife, can also help approximate the date of manufacture. In the meantime, keep posting photos of your Model #10’s, and...if you don’t already have a hard copy of Rhett’s 1991 Randall ‘Green Catalog’, or a copy of the Intersquare Randall Information CD where it is also shown, I’d recommend that you get one, as it’s chock full of interesting and odd-ball Model #10 variants...

That way, everyone gets to read it and it may answer the same questions for more folks. Please, if you will, post your question there and I'll take a stab at it. Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 12/17/10 08:10 PM

Here's a "New, Unused, Unopened" Model 10/ Rosewood I just got.

The blade has some sharpening marks near the hilt and tip that look like it's been lightly used.

Also, the sheath looks like it has some stains on it.

I never meet a Randall I didn't like. The price wasn't too bad and since it'll be a user anyway, I'm a Happy Owner.
Do the Rosewood handles not have a lanyard loop? Most of the others I've seen online seem all have one...and this one doesn't.

Looks like a good general worker that'll do great at slicing and dicing. A Randall "Kitchen Magician"???

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 12/17/10 09:04 PM

At the time this old Model #10-7" was made wrist thongs were not standard. It's got about 30 years on it (or better...cannot tell from the photos). The old Johnson roughback sheath helps to date it.
Nice knife...Best, Capt. Chris

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 12/17/10 11:09 PM

"It's got about 30 years on it"

Here's the sales description on "Ebay" of my latest Model 10:
" This is a new never used Randall Model 10 Saltwater fisherman knife. The knife has a 7" blade and comes with it's orginal sheath. Be sure and see my others auctions running this week. Good Luck!!!"

Let it serve as a good warning of what's happening there.

I believe my price was reasonable, but if it's truly 30 years old, it's a very well seasoned and lightly used old Randall. But nowhere close to "New, Never Used".

Buyer Beware?
Damn straight!

Model 10-5, original Randall Sheath ( I hope) Black Micarta Handle. At least this one was described correctly as "Used with some Handling Marks". It looks like it was cared for well whatever use it saw.
Will be a Kitchen worker along with it's 7" Older Rosewood Brother.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 01/14/11 10:21 PM

I'm guessing Johnson sheath, with out seeing the back of it. Heiser was almost history by this time, but it could be a Heiser. Stainless steel blade (Pre "S" trademark stamp on those Model #10-s) I would venture late 50's or early 60's. I believe the micarta is black and just showing it's age. Best I can do with the photos presented and, of course, not having the combination in front of me. There will be some more pipe up with an opinion, I'm sure.
The split loop, on the front, under the handle may have the maker's name. It could say "Heiser and have the "10" for model and the "5" for blade length in seperate locations, above and below the split loops.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 01/15/11 07:46 AM

Thanks Rocky,
If the sheath is a Johnson then that puts the knife towards my later dates, i.e. 1963-65 "ish". I don't know exactly when the shop went with an "s" stamp on these blades, but I believe the first Johnson sheaths (More correctly: Maurice Johnson) showed up around 1962-63.

It's one that has been bothering me for a while, just never took the time to post it up.
He had a few, this one's never been used....don't know why, he was never bashful about using any of his Randall's. Maybe he just never got around to it, or maybe he liked the aluminium handle better he sure used those. I remember as a kid, we had one in the kitchen. He had broken the blade on it and sent it back to the shop, and they re ground it. I guess it started out life as a 7"...ended up as maybe a 41/2".
Thanks again

I'll post some photos, after I take them tomorrow....After coffee. I just am not up to diggin' all of that "nostalgia" up tonight. I do think I can find one Dave sold me at the shop/ Mid to late 80's. It is old green canvas with a special "Griffin Grip" (That's what David called it). It has 2 sets of thumb notches and is far thicker handle material than the norm. The brown-stiched sheath was special ordered from Greg in the early 90's.

It almost looks like a modified hybrid between the Crider Special and a Regular Mdl 10.
Add sawteeth to the top and you'd close at it very closely to see make sure it wasn't a JCS.

What a great collector find!

Doc,
It wasn't a find. Dave made it up for me, back in the day when this was not terribly uncommon. Truth is: The Crider special is a Model #10, either 5" or 7" with some special bevel sharpening and "C" sheaths. Sometimes even sawteeth. This knife has 3/8" handle stock.

Adding my Model #10-3" to the Knife Of The Week Thread...it's just a basic 10-3", what's kinda' unusual is the piece of the Flight Deck from the USS Yorktown the 10-3 is resting on. grin

I need to correct myself here, the decking material for the flight deck of the USS YORKTOWN CV-10..is not Spruce, but is in fact Douglas Fir.

Great idea....just enough teak on the blocks for #10 slabs.

Douglas Fir base-wood (to "cushion" the landing) topped with Teak (for strength and durability).

New Arrival, Thanks to Rob at LHGK, 10-3 in Brown Micarta and it looks like a possible roughback sheath.
What a little pre-owned cutie....any idea how old it might be? Arrived as described with a few "character marks" showing it was actually used some.
The model 10's are growing on me. PS: I-Phone 4s takes really good shots!

10-5 Black Micarta

10-7 Oldie, Rosewood

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 11/04/11 09:30 PM

Not a roughback #10-3", but they usually have an unfinished side, occuring from the leather being folded. This leaves the unfinished side exposed. The "pouch" sheaths were started, pretty much, after the Johnson era, as were the "drop points". There is, more than likely, some crossover timing, but your knife (Fl. Blade stamp) and a tan pouch is screaming early 90's to me. Hope this helps.

Capt'N..Thanks for the info..appreciated Greatly as usual.
As I mentioned..I think these older Randalls' have a lot of personality. I've got a new 10-3 inbound, I'll see how it compares..don't even know if it'll be a drop-point or look like its' bigger brothers.

Scary Sharp. I'm glad it came in a drop point rather than the usual kitchen knife profile of its' bigger brothers.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 12/23/11 09:04 PM

Quick Question:

A Model 10 with a 4" blade would be a great steak knife...food paring/prep blade size.

The 3" seems a little small...the 5" in a public place would look scary and could get you arrested, and a 7" is out of the question, except for the Chef in the Kitchen.

But a 4" Mdl 10 would be just right to politely take apart a nice steak, roast, whatever, in a public eatery!

Anyone ever try to get one thru the store?

Model #10-4" were available back in the 1980's for a short time. Most had a drop point and were less-than-attractive, due to that blunt, bull-nosed, drop point.

She has taken hundreds of great photos 'cause her rule was I "couldn't kill nothing"-although she nows shoots the .357 Sig Glock best and this #10-3 will replace her purse EDC-Benchmade.
I've really started liking it for many-day-carries, too.

Hey team – I picked up a #10-5 a few months ago and have really enjoyed using the knife. Between the mini-hatchet and the #10-5, I was good-to-go on a recent hiking trip on the SC Foothills Trail near Lake Jocassee. It’s accompanied me on several fishing trips and after a good cleaning makes for a killer kitchen knife! My wife even asks for the knife when cutting the tomatoes, zucchini, squash, and cucumbers coming out of the garden. Great knife, thanks RMK. Have a good week guys, Jay

A Rocky Mountain Randall Model 10-3"

I sent a Randall Knife Model #10-3 to James Behring Jr. in Missoula Montana. I told him to re-handle it..and make it something special. Well...he did he added the amber Sambar stag tine for a handle...a copper hilt..a few extra thumb notches.. and a small copper spacer stack, and best of all he put a CHOIL on the blade !

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 12/11/13 03:22 AM

I measured the hardness of my #10-5 in 4 points - two points about the hilt and two points on the tip of the blade.
Hardness was 53-54 Rockwell. This is what need for utilitarian knife smile

Hello friends!
Today I saw on Ebay item http://www.ebay.com/itm/161040188192
And then I realized that something was not right. In my knife.
The tip I have is too thick.
Leads to tip too thick. Must be a convex lens.
I came to the conclusion that my knife was broken off and reground previous owner something like this:

here's my tip on the scanner

normal tip side

and top

I still love my Randall.
I him very keenly sharpened and always use smile

These are hand made knives, and not always the same. I'm not the pro here, BUT...I think that your knife looks fine. Maybe it's a bit older than the ones that you are looking at. Grinds tend to change from time to time.

The #10, in all sizes, has potential for daily use in our home. I frequently wear the rosewood 10-3 around the house because it's not too big to be uncomfortable or in the way and perfect size to handle most daily chores that tend to pop up. My H.S.Senior son wears a red micarta one on weekends because it's his and he can. One just like it helps my daughter with horses almost every day and my wife took the 7" and claimed it as hers in/for her kitchen.

I would not know for sure, but I would suppose that it was in their kitchen for quite some time. There were very few knives in this collection that were recently made. Most of his stuff was from the mid to late 50's into the 60's.
I'm sure there are others that could speculate with a bit more authority than myself.

Picasso Discoveries
One example of a discovery of a Picasso work is a cat sculpture found in the basement of none other than author Ernest Hemingway. In 1974, after the death of Picasso, Hemingway's first wife discovered a cracked cat sculpture, which was a gift from the artist to Hemingway. Picasso and Hemingway were friends in the 1920s in Paris, and Picasso gave the sculpture to Hemingway because he knew that he was fond of cats. Unfortunately, in 2000 the original was broken beyond repair by a thief and now a replica stands in his home in Key West, Florida.

Slabs or blocks, neither one, can be submitted to the shop. This knife was made from rejected pine cone scales from the shop.

In sale I noticed unusual #10-7 - short tang.
I think this reworking of the owner
due to inaccurate chamfers on the handle.
But I could be wrong. Friends, I want to know your opinion smile

This alteration makes sense - balance shifts toward the wedge.
So still made on the old kitchen knife for metal save.

There is another method of installation blade on handle,

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 01/04/17 10:21 PM

I've looked through most of this thread and didn't see anything that would answer my question.

What type of stainless is the Model 10 made out of? And does anyone have a pic of a 10 that has been used substantially over time, in and around salt-water? Like on a boat or something? I'm interested in just how well it holds up to the environment it was intended for. The vast majority of the pics I've seen of them here seem to have been hardly if ever used.

Thanks.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 01/25/17 04:11 PM

Snake,

I saw the same Model 10-3 on ebay and I also thought that it looked like an unusual blade profile. From the handle moving forward, the blade started out looking more like a straight point version, but "dropped" as it neared the point (looking more like a drop point version). I have examples of Model 10s in both SP and DP configurations, and this one looked like neither of them to my eye (though the ebay photos were not ideal). It looked to have somewhat of a 'hybrid' blade profile, falling somewhere in between the SP and the DP. Whatever it is, it seems as if many bidders felt it to be unusual (or valuable due to its vintage?), as it brought a strong price ($391).

Bob.
What vintage would you give that #10

Dennis

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 01/28/17 03:02 PM

Dennis,

I'm certainly no expert at dating RMKs, but the sheath (assuming it is original to the knife) looks to me like a Johnny Johnson loose stitch rough back, which would date it to about 1986-1991. If you want to read more about the different Johnson sheath stitchings, and dates of usage, there is an excellent discussion, with photos, on page 82 of the 'This Old Randall" thread.

It appears that the first RMK catalog in which the Model 10-3 appeared was the 29th edition, issued in 1992 (it was not listed in the 28th edition, issued in 1988). Unfortunately, it is not pictured. It's possible that the 10-3 was available earlier as a non-catalog, custom or special order?

I don't know when RMK switched from single handle pins in the 10-3s to double pins. That would give us a pretty firm 'made before' date. Maybe Joe or Mitchell or one of the Model 10 specialists can help with that.

Best guess as to vintage...1991-1992).

I hope this helps.

Enough time has passed from the time when the fears
that my #10-5 It is actually 10-7 with a broken tip
confirmed. My great friend, Nikolai, undertook to make regrind.
He did and 10-5 back in the ranks!! grin

As he said, the ideal could not be repeated. Despite its apparent
simplicity, in the performance of grind complex #10 very hard.

And I still found a keychain from heirs Rhett Stidham on ebay.

About the other knives tell in the relevant topic in the fullness
of time (it all came in a single package).

A few filters possibly slightly improve my bad photos on webcam smile

I wonder if there can be any change in the quality
of steel over time for the better?

The fact is that for about 2 years I have not touched the sharpening
of this knife. Yesterday I had to sharpen it, I did it,
now it's sharp as a razor. In the process of sharpening,
I noticed that, compared with the previous time,
steel has become more viscous and hard.

That's a sharp combo right there. Did you have to look hard to get grips that matched so well, or did you get lucky?

Thanks!

I picked up the grips for my S&W from a member on another firearms forum. It was just a coincidence that they were a pretty close match to the handles of my Model 10..... grin

Try outdoors early or late day. Dark blue sky, perfect light. Use inexpensive white board as reflecting material to fill in hot spots on the blades. Play around with it and you'll get it quickly.

Mick, very nice #10-3! smile

Received today, thank you Capt.Chris!
This is a very good job, I can not catch the right angle of shot,
this rosewood has some property,
its layers shimmer like a tiger's eye (stone)

I was also surprised with the way the wizards
in the workshop chose a tree - on the end of handle
the layers coincide and are set mirror, this is cool!

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 04/15/19 09:22 AM

Interest, of late, was shown for an oddball Model #10-7" that was listed on Ebay. I personally think the knife is ok. Scott doesn't recall any Model #10's shaped this way.
I dug into a couple of safes and was able to find "2" (& "Only Two") examples of similar shaping. Both have brown-stitched sheaths, indicating late 1990's. I thought both were made on Dave Griffin & Jed Peckham's watch but was just not sure.?!
Scott and I have had some discussion about these, specifically the dating and Scott is sure that Pete & Charlie were up front, doing what is now Scott & Aaron's jobs. I will bow to the "Young Maynard" on that one.
At any rate, I dusted them off (No: Not literally) and shot a couple of photos. The 5 inch inch is handles in 'Ol green canvas micarta and has 3/8" scales! The 7" has some of my Brazilian rosewood, also in 3/8" thick handle material!
Hope this helps, Stay sharp:
Capt. Chris

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 04/15/19 05:30 PM

Steve--

Stepping in here where I admit I don't know everything.

But, the Model 10 that initiated this thread was questioned because the handle scales had been contoured other than the standard cutout on the bottom for the forefinger.

Capt. Chris showed two Model 10's that had the slabs contoured, but done in different ways. That goes to show what might have been done back when they had more time to take a customer's request into account. Notice haw much thinker the slabs were on his two knives.

The standard Crider Special had a cutout top-and-bottom of the handle, but the thickness of the handle scales were not shaped/contoured otherwise. However, we might not be surprised to see one of these turn up.

They are neat knives, wish I had bought some of the "odd jobs" when I was seeing such stuff years ago--I might have had something to share if I had done so.

Just acquired this nice knife with brown stitching on the sheath....
was the brown thread used one year or could it be ordered for several years?
Does the black micarta fade even if never used? It seems lighter to me or maybe dark dark brown.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 05/04/21 12:24 PM

Brown thread was used by us from Jan.1998 through mid 1999.RMK probably had a few sheaths on hand when we switched to the cream color we use today , so brown stitched sheaths could have gone out for a couple months after that.

This just in. 3" straight and 5". the good Capt. says the color is Mauve. The handle is TeroTuf. It is polyester resin and fabric. It comes in 9 different colors It has a great feel and grip. I haven't heard what the shop thinks of it yet.

So fiberglass for all practical purposes.

Do you know what the "fabric" is?

Not a fan of polyester resin for this application personally.

Thanks DW. Men can wear pink too. I don't though. How was it to work with.
It was possibly a gift for my daughter, but I have been told we are getting her a different gift for Christmas. It is made with a polyester cloth not glass that is in fiberglass.

Re: Knife Of The Week Model 10!!!!!!!!!! - 10/03/22 07:39 AM

polyester will chip relatively easily compared to say epoxy ror phenolic resins. Phenolics aren't as popular now because of the modern epoxies. Being around boats my whole life, I get polyester. It is a good deal cheaper (big today) and is maybe a bit easier to work with, but higher end boat builders have gone to epoxy resins for better strength and durability.

On a knife handle it might be ok, not really heavy use if you will, but still don't like it.
