Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 11/04/07 07:27 AM

Thanks to all that have participated thus far.

This model was part of the post-World War II knives. From Randall Made Knives: The History of the Man and the Blades, by Robert L. Gaddis, pp108-109
Quote:

The model that got fifth spot in the photo was a civilian version of the Fighter and was named the 'Camper.' It had the Fighter's blade without the top edge being sharpened and was thus offered in the same selection of 6-, 7-, or 8-inch blade lengths. The hilt and handle shapes were exactly the same as on his new Hunter model. While only moderately popular the first couple of years, this style was eventually accepted by boaters, as well as hikers and backpackers. The heavily made straight blade has proven to be excellent for general camp chores and all-around outdoor usage.

From the current catalog, p.10
Quote:

Among users of this model is Bradford Angier, famed wilderness expert and author, whose special adaptation is the nickel silver hilt, black Micarta handle, wrist thong and compass. The late Ross Allen, internationally known authority on reptiles, also carried a Model 5.

Current Model 5's come in 5'',6'',7''and 8'' blades of 1/4'' stock. There is a model 5 with a 4'' blade of 3/16'' stock known as the Small Camp and Trail Knife.

Lady and gentlemen may we please see some Model 5's.
Thank you,
Kevin

My #5-6" "Bradford Angier adaptation"
By the way, the blade is carbon and this has been
one of my most used Randalls since I bought it in the early 80s...
camping, backpacking AND canoe trips...it has one or two small
spots but is in great shape overall. I mention this in light of the
new restrictions on options...I really don't feel an over whelming need
for stainless blades, personally.

This is a pretty cool Model #5. It has a 4" blade with a separate "S", nickel silver hilt, 7 spacers, black micarta, and an unlined thong hole. The model #5 with a 4" blade didn't make it's catalog debut until 1988, this one is probably 20 years older than that. Sorry for the lousy picture.

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 11/04/07 05:56 PM

My favorite Model 5 is this one that was owned by the famous shooting expert , D. Lee Braun. I purchased this knife in 1987 from Nate Posner of the San Francisco Gun Exchange who was selling the Braun gun collection at the time. This was the 34th Randall that I purchased in my short Randall collecting effort at that time. Braun was a marksman for the Remington Arms Company. (I would appreciate any more comments on Braun here if you have them)

$200.00 was the price and this was two years before we started the Randall Knife Society in 1989. The knife has a seven inch blade and the sheath is Heiser.

Hey Ron, what year was this knife made?

Regards,

Rhett

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 11/04/07 06:21 PM

The butt cap has a piece added to it by the original owned that looks to be a type of epoxy with a Z made out of copper in it. The Z is for his last name. He also made a handle for another of his knives, a bayonet recovered off of Iwo Jima during the time the Navy & USMC were raising the flag.

Hey Rhett,

It's the earliest 5 I've ever seen and drop dead gorgeous to boot! From Gaddis we know that Bo started working on his postwar field knife lineup in the summer of '45 starting with the Model 3, then the 4 then the 7 then the 5 (if I remember right - I don't have access to my "Bible" right now). If indeed this was the order it's hard to say exactly when he got around to the 5. IMO the very first stag handles after the war had two pins before one was dropped and this happened very quickly. Your's has just the one. Now look at the blade grind: The 5 was a modified fighter, but it still retained the same profile (removal of the top finger cutout nothwithstanding). There is no exaggerated "hump" in the spine as you would see in a late WWII fighter. By this evidence I don't think it's a 2nd half '45 knife. The sheath is the tell on the "no later than" side: Mr. Gaddis has documented the logo snaps were introduced in ~ June of '46. Bottom line is I think it was made in the 1st 6 months of 1946. However I could be off by +/- 5 years as this sh%$ is no exact science

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 11/06/07 05:51 PM

Thanks, Rhett. I'm sure there's still a big gap between what I think I know about old Randalls and reality. I'm always delighted when I find out I'm wrong because it means I've leaned something. The shop was not consistant in doing things back in the "old days", so you can rarely pin down just when an old knife was made. In quantum mechanics there's something called "Heisenberg's uncertainty principle". In dating old Randalls there also has to be a "Randall uncertainty principle". I think I've mentioned before that it wouldn't surprise me if the word "circa" was invented as a result of attempting to date old Randalls.

Best,

Ron

Have to express my admiration again - 11/08/07 10:02 AM

Patrick, your #5 with Iron wood handle is so out standing that I would like to ask all my Randall bretheran to keep an eye out for a source of a #5 - 8", SS, desert Ironwood presentation grade handle of at least this calibre for sale. The mid 1950's #5 - 8" I have has 'charminlgy aged' carbon steel and 'tired' leather handle. I would most indebted for any information of any that is available for sale.

My instinct was correct, this forum is such a delicously bad influence on a weak willed 'teenager at heart' Randall aficienado.

Many thanks.

Here's a nice old 5-7 pinned ivory that someone approached me with a year or two ago. A minor detraction was the missing keeper strap. A major detraction was the fact someone drilled a hole in the ivory handle (possibly in an attempt to keep a crack from spreading?). Anyway he wanted too much $ IMO and I passed on it. Hopefully someone who appreciates it has it in their collection now.

I did add a military type sheath that also holds a Leatherman and a Diamond Eze sharpener stick. I know you will enjoy using your new Model 5, congrats!

I bought some fossil ivory at the Blade Show a couple of years ago. Just had the knife delivered last week. I was not home to take these pictures, I had my wife do that.
The fittings are fine silver from Precious Metals Fabrication.
In all honesty, the knife isn't as "great" as I had hoped. Maybe the FI isn't what I remember or maybe the pics don't do it justice.

Thank you for your "kind" offer. But I will keep the fossil ivory 5. Until I see it in person and get to handle it, I will reserve judgement.
I really like fossil ivory. The piece on this knife had no "bark", so I knew what I was getting. Alot of fossil ivory can not be "judged" until you get the bark off. I had two pieces, with bark on, bought at the same time, put on knives. One piece turned out excellent, the other so-so.
I am still on the look out for a superb piece.

Reference your question:
What is the name of this finger grip option?

All I know it by is what is said in the catalogue, which is "Finger Grips".

You have to specify if you want them left handed and it was a $20 option in the 2008 catalogue. They are not available on smaller knives. If you want that list let me know.

Mr. Hicks I believe you can ask for two different styles of finger grips.
You can ask for #14 style finger grips. Witch is just on the bottom of the handle like the knife you asked about or...
You can also order regular finger grips that wrap around the handle.
I could be very much wrong on this but I do believe I asked the same question to Mrs. Valerie years ago.

It's brand new from RMK, through Sullivan's. One spacer is a little lighter than the rest.

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5 - 06/18/09 11:46 PM

Outstanding wood is, well, outstanding.

Interestingly, my dad's definition of a knife handle is stag, stag, or stag. And, if stag is not available, then stag is perfectly acceptable. Hell, of the half-dozen Randalls that he owns, all have stag handles.

Whenever I buy a new Randall with a non-Stag handle, I need to convey its options, specifically its handle material, to him in a way that make it appear as though its handle were some form of Stag.

In my opinion there is no such thing as a "bad Brad", as the Brad is the all time all around knife for almost everything. Again, if there was one Randall knife that I had to pick over all of my collection, it would be my 1975 Brad, no question.

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 07/02/09 05:18 PM

I posted this knife before on some thread but for the life of me I can't remember where. Anyway, this is another reason to post your knives in Knife Of The Week so they can be found. The original configuration of this 5-5 had just a plain stag handle and for all accounts was pretty much a stock knife with a nice fat stag handle. So one day I sent it to the shop for a face-lift and had finger grips, a thong hole and a compass installed. When it came back, I honestly thought they sent me the wrong knife. A total transformation that made a just an OK looking Randall into something really slick. These are some options I recommend if you're a little tired of one that you might have, and to dress it up a bit for just a fraction of a new knife cost.

Best,
Warren

That's really a beauty, for sure. Here's a picture of my 1975 #5-5" Brad with the stock JRB sheath. Notice it has 2 snaps; Pete Hamilton added the handle snap when I was visiting my brother in Tampa and we went to the shop.

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 07/08/09 07:15 AM

Thanks to all for the kind words. I got interested in wood through Greg Gutcher. Not including this past Blade Show, but the previous 4, we would search the Blade Show looking for unique wood. Dubie, it was Greg who found the Ebony and we had similar knives made. The sad part, his knife was burnt in the fire at Sullivan's.
We just bought some Desert Ironwood, hopefully we will get a couple nice handled RMK out of the wood.
I had started to try and get all 5 model 5's in fossil ivory, all dressed the same. But my fossil ivory burnt as well. So I have decided to get the 5 model 5's in stag. Perhaps not as "flash", but they will all look the similar. Attached is the 5-8" and 5-7". The other 3, 5-4",5-5" and 5-6" are in the pipeline. I have also attached the other side of the fossil ivory 5-7". All the fittings on this knife are fine silver.

I do have other RMK with wood. 2-5" and 13-6" with ironwood. Model 7 with maple, 8 with mesquite, 12-6" and 12-8" in walnut. Greg was telling me he has some other wood that looks promising. Once he is feeling a bit better, we may start working on something new.

The original shop invoice has "BB--THIN & ROUNDED" specified as non-chargeable options for the Brass Butt Cap. I didn't know about THIN, and have generally used RADIUSED instead of ROUNDED. They may be the same.

Nice knife, Ken:
"Thin" is 3/8" (approx.) and a "standard" butt cap is about 1/2" (give or take). The larger cap makes the handle look more like a BPH but I like the thin & rd. cap far batter. Great combination.

I snagged (stagged? SHAGed?) this #5-4" (with five chargeable options -- originally, I incorrectly stated six initially, forgetting that Stag is the standard handle material for the #5-4") off of this forum early this year, and finally took photos of it this morning:

Ken,
Nice knife..."BUT"...(There's that word again)...I only count 5 chargeable options on the knife. Were you including the black sheath? Either way: Great "snag". I have one with the exact same riggin' and love it.
Best, Capt. Chris

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 09/14/10 07:58 PM

Cap,

These are the chargeable options that I count, so please correct me if I am wrong: stainless steel, nickel silver hilt, aluminum/black spacers, stag handle, Duralumin butt cap (my understanding is that it is chargeable if the handle is not stacked leather), and wrist thong hole.

I enjoy seeing everyone's photos on the RKS forums. I felt like I should be making a contribution in return, so I bought a compact camera to carry with me at work. I hope to post some photos from time to time. I'll start with the knife I use on my job.

This is the hardest-working knife I own. It's a #5-4 in standard configuration: carbon steel, brass, and stag.

I do admit that the photo is bad. I am looking at a light box and when I am home next, I will try and "raise the bar" at bit with photography. My posting skills are p.poor, so no telling what will show up!!

Thanks guys for all the kind comments. I looked at my spreadsheet of RMK and over 1/3 of my collection is Model 5's. Peter you a correct, 5's are my favorite.

I am back in Canada next month and will endeavour to try and take some decent pics of the 5's, at least.

If any of you have pics of 5's with old yellow or discontinued AGM would you please post a picture. I only have one yellow micarta handled 5, which is a BearCamp Special. Picture attached.

Finding an Old Yellow or AGM 5 is high on my Christmas wish list. Of course my wish list happens to run 365 days a year!!!

I also have attached a picture of an Old Brown Micarta, Low S 5-6 that a bought a few years ago.

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 10/17/10 06:46 AM

Hi Rod
Here is my model 5 6" with AGM
It is currently at the shop getting a wrist thong and a black left hand sheath. I wanted a compass too, but the handle is a little too narrow for it to look good. It should be back before the end of the year. This was one of the knives that I luckily obtained at this years shop sale

This picture is for you. I bought a light box when I was in Canada a week or so ago. I did experiment with the light box, but my photos are still pretty poor. The pic was taken without the light box.
I took this pic of all my 5's with my Olive wood handled one at the center in your honor.
As well, I have 4 blocks of Olive wood back in Canada, I hope to get stabilized next year. The plan, in the next year or two is to have a handful of Olive wood 5's.

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 11/20/10 06:32 PM

Rod,
Great shot! I don't know where you got it, but I am fairly sure I used to own that old #5-7" at the bottom (6 o'clock position) of the photo. I had a #5-7" a #1-7" and a #2-7" to match. All had tight-stitched roughbacks with that maple burl for handles. I think (again..memory? What memory?) I believe I sold them to collector in the Ft. Pierce/Pt. St. Lucie area of Florida. There's a possibility it is not the same #5...but it sure looks like it! Great collection.

Yes I have shown a few of them before, on close ups.

Capt.

I will attach a picture of the 5-7 you thought you may have owned. I did not take a pic with the sheath. But you are correct, it is a JRB with a white Norton stone. The knife has a NSH and I was told the handle was Curly Maple. I bought it of Ebay in May 2007 from a nice couple in the north west, Oregon,I think.
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 11/21/10 03:22 PM

That's it! I knew it looked familiar. Curly maple, "flame" maple, "burl" maple...Whatever you want to call it, it sure looks like one of the "trio". Ya' know how unusual that handle was back in that time period? I would venture to say it was unusual enough that the chances are more than just "good" of your model #5 and "my" #5 being one in the same!
I know the guy I sold it to has listed and sold some of his knives on ebay. The "N.W. couple" could have picked it up from him...or from the person who got it from him...or the person who got it from the person who got it from the person or the....OK: You get the idea. It's a small world, this "Randall thing", and a lot of them come back around...Nice knife!

I am very thankful to be able to collect what I want. There are times when I wish I had a Model 5 with this or that option. But all in all, I am happy with what I have and try to add a couple Model 5's each year. Come on Blade Show!!!

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 04/08/12 12:48 PM

This thread has been dead for a while....
This little model 5-4" arrived from the shop this week.
It was ordered on 5/17/07 with a ship date os 3/22/12.
It's sooo close the the model 8. It's a handy little knife, light, small....easy to carry.
Wonder if Sullivans could make a pouch type sheath for it?
Also shown with another, slightly older 5.

Rocky,
Model #5-4" knives will almost always slide into a "Pathfinder" pouch sheath as though they were custom made for it.
Nice stag!...Capt. Chris

And here my only (at the moment) #5, with nickel silver hilt, custom supplied ironwood, finger grips and thong hole: it arrived from the States with the point damaged, so I asked to a talented italian knifemakers, Mr Roberto Bernini, to touch it up.

Thank you all for the kind words. If you are into Micarta on your RMK, I really think the Capts. Bone Linen is a very good option. We never know, as nice as it is today, it may become collectible like AGM or Old Yellow.

The bad news with Bone Linen, you have to deal with the Capt.!!! For those of you that don't know the Capt. or me, we are good friends. Actually he is a better friend to my wife than me!! It might have something to do with her good looks or my ugly face!!

Rod:

Would like to hear more experienced Randall people's thoughts on the finger grips. My personal opinion is the nice wood looks even better with the finger grips.

The FG's do however, make photographing them much tougher (too many complex surfaces to throw glare).

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 05/11/13 06:30 PM

Doug

I have not "used" a RMK with finger grips. By this I mean, skinning a deer, cleaning a fish or something similar. Therefore I can't comment on how they work, if the handle was wet/slippery.
Grain wise, you get a much better exposure/area with finger grips. There is more surface of the wood exposed and the indent of the grips themselves can change the graining of the wood. I agree nice wood generally looks better with finger grips. I have also had an instance where I thought I had a great block of wood, but when I got the knife back from RMK, the wood was not as nice as I had expected. I had thought the swirls, lines would go right through the wood, but it was not to be.
I am a lousy photographer, so I can not help you there with the light on the different angles.

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 05/20/13 09:27 PM

Here is my model 5 5 inch that I received today. It was ordered on July 10 2008 and was scheduled for delivery on May 30, so the shop is ahead. Another great knife from the great folks at Randall, and someone picked a great piece of fat dark stag for me smile
Options are nickel silver hilt and butt plate, wrist thong, and my name etched as well as a left hand sheath.
It will be a great choice when I need something a bit more elegant than my model 28

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 06/07/13 08:46 AM

I know this will surprise the heck out of most of you, but I acquired a couple of Model 5's at or just before the Blade Show.

1st off a post war 5-7. Brass hilt, leather handle and peened tang.
2nd a late 40's early 50's 5-8, NSH, leather handle and peened tang as well. Neither of these knives came with sheaths, so now I am on the hunt for sheaths for both of them.
3rd knife is a 6 option 5-6 with Ironwood. Shipped from the Shop a while ago, but I only got it at Blade.

Thanks you all for the comments. I think finding at least one sheath for the old 5's will be one of the most difficult/longest searches in my RMK collecting "career".

Peter, I had got the knife on Thursday morning and left it at the hotel the rest of the Show. I did not want you to be stressed over an Ironwood knife that was not yours. Besides it could be embarrassing to see two grown men wrestling over a knife at the Blade Show! Truthfully I forgot about bringing it back to the Show.

This is a model #5 with a 7" blade. Note the lack of the finger dip on the spine at the hilt. The top edge is not sharpened...... but, it has a double hilt!

The handle is a great piece of stag with a brass pin.

The sheath is a wide flap Heiser.... Knife and sheath are early 50's.

He did, indeed. It was Gene's piece. He said he had been looking for the right use for it and the fit was great! The #5-8" had come from the shop with a piece of crown that did not fit the customer. I ordered a replacement for the customer and wound up with this! A little pricey when you factor in the crown/install wasted but worth it to resurrect a fine combo out of it.

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 11/20/13 12:43 PM

Just received this one. By far the best configuration I've ever had in the 5-4. Only issue is the sheath. Not liking the texture of the leather. Would rather have a pouch or highrise for sure, or just another standard one.

This knife goes to the grave with me, unless my daughter has a son someday worth of me willing it to him. :-)

Showed the last photo of the shoulders of the grinds. Whomever was grinding that day, was spot on. The entire knife is very even and this one has a blade that is a little thicker than ones in the past. I'm a happy camper.

that sheath does look a bit odd, almost like pig leather with all the small holes... i bet it holds the knife nice and secure though!

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 11/20/13 03:08 PM

Is the knife a new order from the shop? I only ask because the stitching looks like to be brown that was used back in 1993 or so.
As far as a pouch sheath goes, the #5-4" will fit perfectly in a Model #26 sheath. Try it?
Nice knife, Capt. Chris

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 11/20/13 03:44 PM

Thanks for the comments and advice. The knife is only new to me. Purchased it from an individual. It had never been used and had a very dark patina on the brass. It is now a user. So your suggestion that it is from the early 90's is quite feasible. I'll order a 26 pouch sheath. Thanks.

Well we had 10 or so inches of snow about a week back, last night it was warm and raining so the snow left and we have a nice muddy playground left! Illinois winters are so random and can change at anytime. Today is rain then possible ice!

This is why I love stainless steel! Here's a few shots of yesterday's mud/rain/fog Randall playtime!

Modified grip for choking up! Love the choil sometimes!

Split up some nice dead standing seasoned cherry!

Stainless stays fairly clean!

Proper lanyard use for most situations!

Tulsa Trade - 04/11/14 06:39 PM

Just got back from Tulsa and..."What A Trip"!! (Take that in "all ways possible") I thought I'd share some pics of a way-cool Model #5-7" that I took in trade at the show. This knife should interest a lot of folks.
* VietNam War vintage knives
* Military knives
* Hunting knives
* Stag handled knives
* Johnson roughback freaks
* Artistic/engraving fanatics
* 7 spacer dudes
Come one, come all. This is a splendid example of a knife that ain't pidgeon-holed into one area. I have seen (even tried) some blued blades before and most just don't get it. Whomever did this one...Nice Job!!
The engraving does not appear to be signed but looks like examples I have seen (and owned) by Louie Sanchez! I mean every single area that could be scratched on is covered on this "old, squared" style brass single hilt. The stone is white but may not be the original. It is slightly thinner than current stones but seems a tad too abrasive.
Anyway: It's a nice conversation piece...so: PLEASE: Have a conversation.
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Re: Tulsa Trade - 04/12/14 04:13 AM

Capt.

Your opinion, does it appear that the front of the sheath has been waxed or polished? Not Sullivan's type waxed, shoe polish type wax/polish. I ask this, as the stitching on the front looks darker than the stitching on the back.
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Tulsa Trade - 04/12/14 07:45 AM

The sheath has been "darkened" somehow. I don't know what product was used but the sheath is quite dry and gives no clue as to exactly what was used. The whole rig is in great shape and I feel that "whatever" was used...was used a good long time ago.

Re: Tulsa Trade - 11/25/14 09:06 PM

I thought I would bring the Model 5 thread to the top again. In the last 1 1/2 years I have bought/acquired two older Model 5's. Neither had sheaths.
I bought a sheath for the 5-7 a while ago, but only recently found a sheath for the 5-8. It isn't perfect, but considering it is around 60 years of age, it is not bad.
I have come to realize buying older sheaths, by themselves, price wise, can range between, "not bad" to "dear, we need to take a mortgage out on the house".
The 5-7, which I think is a late 40's to early 50's, based on the spacer arrangement. BUT I have been wrong before, many times!!

Re: Tulsa Trade - 03/18/15 10:30 AM

I got an interesting knife in the recent Rock Island auction. It was desribed as a #5 with six inch blade. However, the photo showed a "dip" in the blade just in front of the hilt with thumb notches. I thought maybe it was a #1. I got the knife last week and the thumb notches on the blade look odd. There are three photos attached. One shows the knife and sheath, one photo is a comparison of the new knife (on the right) and a correct #5 and the third shows the new knife with "dip" and thumb notches up close. It looks to me like a previous owner might have ground the "dip" and added the thumb notches. What do you think?

Re: Tulsa Trade - 03/18/15 11:20 AM

A bit curious, but I wonder:

1. Is the clip sharpened?
2. How is the sheath marked (I think it looks like a Johnson sheath--not to start a long exchange on this, but maybe it is marked with the nominal model number?).

We know you can order a Model 1 with a single hilt.

What we don't know is whether the shop might have installed the Notches into the "dip" on a Model 1?

To my eyes, it looks like the top of the notch was ground down. They appear flatter on top.
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Tulsa Trade - 03/18/15 12:03 PM

You can order (and I "have") a Model #1, single hilt and thumb notches. You can also order a #5 with the top bevel sharpened. Being as both models have used a "shared sheath", for years, none of this may help determine what this knife was originaly. My gut would lend me to believe it was all shop-made though.
Hope this helps, Capt. Chris

Re: Tulsa Trade - 03/18/15 12:27 PM

Capt Chris
Could the notch also be requested flattened like the one on the right demonstrates?
Thanks

Re: Tulsa Trade - 03/18/15 03:04 PM

Thanks for your comments, gents. For whatever it's worth, the clip is not sharpened. The sheath is a Johnson rough back, tight stitched and, in addition to the Randall stamp, is only marked "6" on the back. I guess I'll call it a #5 for now.
By the way, the knife is named to "Bill Redburn". Rick Bowles told me he did this special for Mr. Redburn which is why the scrim is not numbered. He also said he thinks it was done about 1978-79.

Re: Tulsa Trade - 03/18/15 04:12 PM

I would guess a model #1, requested no top bevel sharpened...perhaps by local or state restrictions...but who knows? You cannot request the #1 top on a #5. Of course, ordering a #1 with this setup would be the same thing anyway.

You might want to see if you can get Rick to give you something in writing on that.
I have only seen 1 other Bowles scrim on a Randall that wasn't numbered & the man who bought it from me had Rick add a number.
Just a thought.

Re: Tulsa Trade - 03/18/15 09:05 PM

Capt. Chris--

Your logic is that it is a Model 1-6 (with the Model 1 "top" not being added to a Model 5 per Shop practice or policy).

Which makes sense because why add the divot that characterizes the Model 1 to a Model 5 anyway?

And it is left for us to assume that somebody wanted Thumb Notches added into the Model 1 divot. Perhaps that somebody "thought" that the divot plus the notches would provide improved purchase for the thumb or finger that is placed forward of the hilt.

Since it apparently has never been a "user," perhaps the original buyer simply wanted something that nobody else might have ever ordered, but that person probably did not foresee that he would create a mystery to intrigue and befuddle us of the future!

Larry
Posted by: crutchtip

Re: Tulsa Trade - 03/18/15 09:18 PM

Larry -

The "divot" is a finger relief. It is designed for your forefinger (pointer) when grasping the hilt for edge up fighting (Bo's preferred style) offering a more comfortable grip. The top quillion of the hilt goes between the forefinger and middle (bird) finger.

Just received this one in the mail. It had a fairly rough handle with one big protrusion. It also came with a mediocre factory edge. So, after a half hour with a file and buffer, and another half hour on the stone, I now have a fantastic 5-4 that I have carried the last 4 out of 5 days. (Went to NYC on one day and they still don't understand knives)

It is a wonderful size and shape and fits my hand like a glove. Also received a nice vintage 5-5 that I will post pictures of later.

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 08/12/15 11:46 AM

As promised, here is the 5-5 I just received as well. Totally loved the grind lines and old spacers and the fact it is not perfectly straight from handle to blade. A slight downward curve really aids in cutting. Also loved the fact the blade was dead mint and the handle had taken on a nice patina. Now the blade is hair poppin' sharp and ready to go out on adventures.

I've had six of these and this one I believe is the keeper. A thicker blade than others, squared hilt that I'll actually keep square, and just feels the best in my hand. I'll take a picture of my current 5-5 with black Micarta handle and show the difference in thickness.

Thought I'd throw in a picture of it with my two favorite folders. Both have bank vault lock-up with absolutely no play. The black on is polished water buffalo horn and S30V steel.

Just picked up this leather handled 5-5 with sawteeth.

Took a pic to compare an other 5-5 with sawteeth. Quite a difference where the sawteeth start and finish in the two knives.

After looking at the pictures, I am not sure the top knife has a Model 5 grind. The top bevel starts a lot further forward than most 5's!! Any thoughts???
Posted by: crutchtip

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 10/05/15 10:19 PM

difference is the location of the RMK stamp which affects the grind/teeth. At least it does on these two examples.

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 02/06/16 01:57 PM

That is an awsome piece, maxpastor!

How far through the handle does the tang reach on the Butt Plated models, halfway? 3/4 of the handle length maybe?

Or in the ones with an inbedded compass?
Posted by: Lofty

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 02/07/16 09:08 AM

I have never cut a handle off any #5 of mine, but most short tangs have had enough weight in back end to balance weight of blade plus guard with center of gravity either at index finger or at guard. Assuming a normal proportion tang circa 1/2"x1/4", I could see about 3/4 of handle length. The back part of tang/handle takes very little stress and think anything past 3/4 main need is for a pommel hangar.

Nice knives there, Bill. I would be scared to death of the 8 option jobber but a rarer and rarer thing and a beauty. If someone has posted a 9 option #5 here, I do not recall one and have watched this site for a while, long enough to see many early posters no longer here, and they had some humdingers.

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 02/07/16 03:56 PM

Gustaf, here are the specs on this one from Capt. Chris

Max,
Your new acquisition has 8 options! They are:
* Stainless
* STN (Sawteeth/No sawteeth grind)
* Nickel silver hilt
* Aluminum & red spacers
* Maroon micarta handle (or possibly "CW")
* Border patrol handle shaping
* Nickel silver butt plate
* Wrist thong
On top of that you have a ninth option (reduced hilt) but it is "non-chargeable". You also have a black sheath ($30 charge)and, because of the STN, a long "TB" (top bevel sharpened) which is a chargeable option with a standard #5 blade grind..."BUT"...(I know: I can't help myself)...it is "standard", therefore non-chargeable, with the STN.
Helluva' knife! Hope this helps,
Best, Capt. Chris

You're a stand up guy, providing info maxpastor!

As a user, I went for the standard grind & brass fittings, I enjoy the patina of old brass and a well used carbon steel, and someone needs to bring that steel back home to Sweden, right...?
(it's most likely made in Germany now though...)

I do like the standard sheath, but find the pouch with dangler attachment more "field friendly" - hence reduced hilt.

Very nicely optioned 5-5 Eric, great stag too. The 5-4 with the reduced hilt has a small Gambler look to it; I like it.

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 03/04/16 07:50 PM

I have studied the Model 5's just a little, but one thing I am not sure on is if the thumb notches are standard or an option??? when I read the description on the catalog I don't see the notches as a standard option.

just curious

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 03/04/16 08:00 PM

From the website "Top of blade in front of hilt is notched for thumb placement"

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 03/04/16 08:00 PM

Max

They are standard. I tried a few years ago to order a 5 through a dealer, without thumb notches. No luck.

Now to contradict myself, I have at least two 5's without thumb notches. Perry told me that this happened once in a while to older 5's. I don't know if they were ordered that way or it just happened.

Welcome to the Forums. It is my opinion that Model 5's dressed like yours are a bit rare in North America as well.

I have a couple, one with black micarta and one with yellow micarta. They rank up there as my favorites as well. Although I will probably never use the sawteeth, I do like the look of small sawteeth.

I called the shop to see what they had on the bench around 1987 or 88, my son and I got matching 14's, while I was on the phone I got a 5-4 for a buddy going on a sheep hunt in British Columbia.

I was so envious of his knife, a perfect small hunter. I wanted one for years but never got around to ordering one.

There was no date on the box, so the only indication is the stones. The plain white ended in 1973 and the India marked stone started in 1989-1990. But was the India stone just chucked in the box????? My guess is that the India stone doesn’t belong. Thanks, Eric

Thanks fellas. I picked this up at an estate sale and after I bought it the seller told me he thought the owner had carried it in Vietnam. I talked to a family member of original owner (he is now deceased) and was told he was an E6/SSG with the 101st Abn Div and carried the knife in Vietnam in 1966. She remembered him stating he bought the knife in country for $20 and brought it home after his tour so unsure of it's origin prior to that. I have no photos of him with the knife but the story is good enough for me as it's going in the keeper pile - wish it could talk. There's a few other photos of it in the "This Old Randall" thread.
It's a cool old knife and I got a good deal on it but it was over $20...

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 02/27/17 05:55 PM

Christmas time in February. This is a long story.

When we lived in Ireland, a good friends brother gave me a chunk of Yew wood. We moved back to Canada and the wood got put away in a safe place!!

Finally got off my rear and talked to Greg Gutcher about having a Model 5 made with the wood. Had it stabilized and here is the finished product with a black no hone sheath. Did not even wipe the blade.

As well, in the package, was a high ride sheath for my red and blue handled 5-4. I am so happy, I could almost do an Irish jig!!

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 03/12/17 10:09 AM

I know we had discussion about Model 5-5's and the blade "shape" going to a CC shaped blade.

Here are four 5-5's with ST. I know the Bear Camp special is the original grind (not CC), as this knife was made in 1982. It is SN 1. Anyone have opinions about the other 3???

An aside, the leather handled knife, which I bought on Ebay, comes with a great story from the seller. He states he used the knife to cut/kill a rattle snake, that had bit into a friends boot!!

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 03/12/17 02:53 PM

Some of you may not know, but Billy Poyner and I are good friends.
I got a text this morning from him, of a Model 5 he just got with Thuya Burl. I thought he was supposed to be working at that time of day, but apparently not!!!
Anyway I think the Cap dropped off the Thuya Model 5 at Billy's last night on his way to Tulsa.
I know Billy is going to post a pic tonight, so I thought I would beat him to it with a pic of my Thuya 5. This Thuya Burl, I supplied, and I got this knife in 2012. I also have another Model 5 with shop supplied Thuya, but I have not had a chance to get to our PO Box in NY state to pick it up.
It will be interesting to compare the two pieces of Thuya, Billy's and mine.

Thuya is great wood for handle material. IMO.

Great looking Model 5.

I have 3 Model 5's in the Angier "mode", one of which was featured in Sheldon's book. All the thong holes are on the bottom.
Posted by: crutchtip

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 05/30/17 03:36 PM

IIRC most if not all thong holes were relocated to bottom as "standard" probably in the early 60's.

I think one reason is with the handle drop, often there was not much material to work with between the tang and the top of the handle.

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 05/30/17 05:58 PM

Max,
Nice Brad! It may be my eyes...(Lord knows: They ain't their best nowadays) but the name etching looks much more recent than the knife's vintage. It could be the photo/angle/lighting/etc... but it looks too light...more like current etchings.
Best, Capt. Chris
Posted by: maxpastor

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 05/30/17 06:20 PM

Capt.
now that you say that I agree it does look very light. I'll know more when I receive the knife. if so, Mr. Moore may not be the original owner. I remember reading a thread by Scott, in regard to the name being part of the providence of a knife and I am excited to have an older named blade, hope it is just the camera work and it an original owner. when did Randall start etching names??? I believe the unlined throng holes were from around 64 to 72 if I have the dates correct. I see a gray stone in a photo of the sheath (only the edge) so we may know more if it has the yellow writing on it. that would fit the time frame.
Posted by: Wally

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 05/30/17 07:32 PM

I looked at the catalogs on Tunes' page, the 1942 catalog mention inlaid initials, or initials on a silver disk. The 1945 catalog priced etching at $1.50.
Posted by: maxpastor

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 05/30/17 08:46 PM

that makes since Wally. inlaid on separate material. and the Solingen blade stamps were etched from 55 to 79, Now I don't know if Randall etched them or Solingen. but I imagine that Randall was etching on the blades by that time period.
great info

thanks

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 06/02/17 02:39 PM

received the knife today:

It did have the yellow letters stone. the name is very small and not very deep, so Capt. Chris may be correct about it being a newer etch, letter mic out at .077" tall. JRB sheath, over all the knife is in very good condition, compass looks really good.

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 08/14/17 09:58 AM

Dumb Question Alert!

I have read that the reason sawteeth vary in size on the Model 18 is due to the age of the "wheel" that cuts them. Why do the sawteeth on these different vintage Model 5s appear to be the same small size? In other words, why don't we see Model 5s with large sawteeth?
Posted by: Billy Poyner

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 08/14/17 02:16 PM

It is my understanding that teeth on the 18 are cut to be straight
up and down and other knifes at an angle.Read that somewhere or was told to me.Can be verified by disclaimed by Scott,Capt etc.Have quiet a few with saw teeth including a couple of 5's
Posted by: W Polidori

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 08/14/17 03:08 PM

Looks like the teeth on 5's are set to cut on a pull stroke. On 18's either push or pull. That what I see, could be totally wrong.
Posted by: Chief

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 08/14/17 09:26 PM

I would guess that the grinder "wheel" gets changed at a certain level or depth of use.
Maybe gets used on other projects so the teeth stay more uniform.
Posted by: W Polidori

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 08/14/17 09:33 PM

But the point being depth and angle of cut of teeth appear different. Take another look at 18's and 5's. Survey says.....
Posted by: Dirty_Water

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 08/14/17 09:35 PM

Tom you are correct...size depends on the sharpness of the wheel, and even how much wheel is left the process...since we do not do very many Sawteeth in the front room, the wheel tends to be a newer wheel and we are able to keep the teeth more of a fine cut. We also purposely tend to make the teeth fine for the front room knives (not 14 room)...

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 08/15/17 10:31 AM

To all--

About three years ago at Blade, I saw an older Model 1-5 stag with sawteeth.

I should have measured and counted the teeth--they were small, and maybe as many as 16-per-inch!

I kick myself for continuing to look at all the stuff this dealer was putting out--when I turned back another dealer had stepped in and piled this knife and several others aside to buy them.

I was going to take pictures of the wooden handled Model 5's I own. I got one picture and the rain (showers) started.
Got another dozen or more wooden handled ones, when I get time to take their pic.

From the top: Ebony, Olive wood, Olive wood, Thuya and Yew.

My first Randall and my camping/hiking knife. Felt so good in the hand I became a bit obsessed with Randall knives since I got it. The history is fascinating and there is so much to learn.

Already saving up for a version of a little bear bowie that I am currently lusting after.

Today me newest came. Model 5-6” with Nickel Silver hilt, black and aluminum spacers, Black linen Micarta handle. Did come with the standard Randall sheath. But today I am using a Mille type sheath from Spartan Blades with a maxpedition pouch. The sheath is lined so no marking up the blade

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 01/08/21 04:23 PM

I also like the 5 with the 6in. blade. If I could only have one Randall it would be the 5-6 although I really like the 25's and the 26's. What am I saying I like them all! I also am quite fond of the Rick Bowles Special. The hilt is NS just looks like brass in the pics. Can I send this knife back to the shop and have ST added?

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 01/10/21 11:41 PM

SGT Eldridge, the file size of each of your photos is too large for the photos to post. You need to reduce each photo's file size. The total file size of the three was nearly 4 MB.

If you're using your smartphone to transmit the photos, email them to yourself. The prompt will ask you for your chosen file size. Each photo should be no larger than 500kb, so the three together should not exceed 1.5 MB in total. After you have emailed each them to you, drag them out of the message, and put them in a marked file folder. Then, when you are ready to "publish them", just indicate the photo you are using and post it into the File Manager. These three now total less than 500kb.

The alternative is to use a phone photo editing app like Google's Snapseed, a free app.

Some of my learned geek friends here may have an easier method. Hope so.

Here are yours....

I use photo resizer app, then after re sizing, I also rename the photo so it's easier to find and post.

Joe,
It's (probably) photo size. I use Microsoft Office Picture Manager, 2003 (Yes: That's right: 2003). I resize to under 300kb which, by today's cell phone cameras image sizing is quite small. "ONCE" resized, I never have a problem posting straight up.

When I click on a photo a box comes up and in that box you can click on edit a new box comes up and you can resize, flip, or rotate left or right. Then I change the pixels to 750 and the other box fills its self. Then I click out and it asks it you want to save, which you do. That works for me hope it will for you also. This is a couple of pics of a handle that has turned darker on one side than the other.

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 11/07/21 09:52 AM

I have a question, I don’t remember being asked before.
On older Model 5’s, once in a while, you find one without thumb notches. On newer 5’s, single hilts, they all have thumb notches. BUT (Capt will be happy seeing that word) on 3 newer Model 5’s, with DOUBLE hilts, there are no thumb notches.
I understand thumb notches on a double hilt would not be very useful. Can anyone answer, if you order a double hilt Model 5, is thumb notch delete “automatic”?
Posted by: crutchtip

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 11/07/21 09:58 AM

Rod, I would guess that is the case. What would be the point?

As an aside, here is an odd duck, and I presume it was counted as an option. Who the heck would order a model 1 like this? Not the most comfortable using the finger relief for edge up method. Looks like SJ went right from the notches to the teeth or vice versa, and didn't miss a beat. Late 60's piece.
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 11/07/21 10:05 AM

Rod,
Any knife with thumb notches (as standard) will not receive them when ordered with a double hilt.
Hope this helps,
Capt. Chris
PS: Newer #5's without thumb notches and equipped with a single hilt would have:
A) Either been special ordered that way
..................Or...............
B) They were missed by the shop

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 11/07/21 03:02 PM

Yes sir, T/N are not neccesary for double hilts and are deleted automatically just as they are added on the 14's and 15 CDT's single hilts at no charge...

I have no idea if the thong hole was shop done. You would think it would be lined at this point in time, but who knows. maybe it slipped thru the cracks, then again, maybe it didn't.

Re: Knife of The Week Model 5!!!!! - 12/17/21 10:35 PM

Maurice Johnson had two machines, with one having a looser stitch pattern. You see some of his from the early 60's with the loose pattern. I don' know if it was the same machine he used in the 80's, but I am going to guess not, but who knows. The main machine he used to make the "tight stitch" pattern did break on occasion, and he used the spare while his main one was being repaired. So it is not impossible to have a looser stitch on what we might consider an earlier appearing knife like this one, but it is not common.

In any case, I went and looked at the sheaths that go with the few examples 5" bladesI have, and Capt. is correct. In my haste, I seem to have put it with the wrong sheath. I will have to rephotograph it and repost.

Rod, that is a super display for sure.
For us not in the know would you describe the different “stages” of the blade forging in your display?
Thanks

Thanks everyone for the comments. The display was put together by ?? and I bought it from Mitchell. He has a similar one with a Model 1. Perhaps someone can shed a light on how these displays came about.
Walker I do not know the names of the different “steps” in the production process. The blade starts out as a bar of steel, but I do not know what each step is called.

That 5-4” is a beauty. If you want it to see a bit of the world, I would adopt it and give it a good home!

A Model 5-5" for the 5th of the month. This knife was given to me by 3 good friends who are on this Forum.
A good as RMK are, good friends are better.
...Here ya' go Rod. Nice one! (& a Ward Gay handle to boot)!

A real jem of a Model 5-5" Rod. Sure wish that Ward Gay handle was still available on a Model 5.

I agree with Mike, I would be ordering a 5 if I could get a Gat award handle on it.

Thank you Mike and Alan.

The handle feels very good in my hand. And the micarta is a great color, although my photography does not show that.
