Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 10/07/07 08:00 AM

Every week we will have a different RMK model on which to focus. And hopefully, many knives shown and much knowledge gleaned.

Here we go!!!
Week one, Model 1

"By the first part of 1943, the Zacharias-Randall design had mutated into an early style of the All-Purpose Fighting Knife. This fighter, years later designated as Model 1, has been changed surprisingly little with the passage of time. Knives being made presently look much the same as their grandpappies of World
War II days. The name All-Purpose Fighting Knife was much too long for Bo's record book, so he shortened it to simply 'Fighter' and also used this name in correspondence with servicemen. The name stuck, and to this day his Model 1, with its distinctive semi-bowie blade, brass double hilt, leather washer handle, and aluminum butt cap is recognized the world over as 'The Randall Fighter'."
--from Randall Made Knives: The History of the Man and the Blades, by Robert L. Gaddis.

Lady and Gentleman, may we please see some Model 1's, and share some Randall knowledge.

Dubie's Model 1. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Knife of the Week! - 10/07/07 11:34 AM

To that end; Dubie states in in your other thread, that the knife above was ordered (or delivered) in 1982. At first I was gonna cry foul on that date, as the sheath is a 'loose-stitch' JRB, more typical of the mid 1980's and on...

But, the spacers are right - and it's been documented that M. Johnson had purchased a second 'loose' stitching machine in the early 1970's (I wrote 'in 1974' in our book, but now believe that it was more likely by mid 1973); a stitching machine that he used infrequently on larger sheaths throughout the remainder of the 1970's and early 1980's...

Maurice did, however, use the loose stitching machine almost exclusively on the smaller sheath patterns during this period; with his son Johnny Johnson later using this machine for the majority of his sheath production, from the mid 1980's into the very early 1990's...

I digress, back to Dubie's knife & sheath...if you look at Johnson sheaths from the 1980's, you'll quickly notice that the stone pockets made by father & son have a different appearance...Maurice's are usually flat and squared like the one shown on Dubie's sheath, while Johnny's are usually more 'rounded' on top, giving the stone pocket a bowed look, on most example's seen...(I'll post an example pic later)

IMO, Dubie's 'loose stitch' Johnson roughback sheath was made in the early to mid 1980's by Maurice Johnson when his primary stitching machine was on the fritz (a recurring problem by this time), and thus matches the date given...cool knife, unusual sheath...

Re: Knife of the Week! - 10/07/07 11:39 AM

Shel, the owner of the knife had his name and 1982 etched onto the blade after he picked it up. If you blow up the autographed pics, you might be able to read it.

I agree about the sheath. I've seen another just like it, with what appears to be really white thread. It was also on an early 80's #1-7.

Kevin, thanks for the props, but IIRC, the original 'Model of the Week' thread idea over at knifeforums.com was Ron Mathews'...a good idea in theory, as there is much to learn 'if' the thread stays on track...

Shel,

Thanks for the credit. I think over at Knifeforums it pretty much kept on track and we went two full rounds or close to it (27 weeks plus dealer specials). I also "think" it was Gary (Escapement) that set up a link to all the threads on both series (here: http://users.adelphia.net/~jimingram/randallmodel.html Unfortunately Knifeforums changed the software and the links go nowhere now). Bottom line it was a lot of fun and learning for all. I hope we can keep it going here (Thanks, Kevin!).

Here's a circa 1943 fighter I was fortunate to have in my collection for a while which is pictured in Sheldon's book on page 17. At the time the photo was taken about 2 years ago the knife had no sheath. Subsequently I was able to find a period Southern Saddlery sheath that fit it perfectly (6 1/2"). It was like hitting the lotto

So much knowledge wasted with a few software changes.

I lost thousands of posts I had posted on turbocharged and supercharged engines on another board for the same reason.

Hopefully people will save the pics and the info on their
own hard drives so that it could be pulled together again
if a similar thing happened here.

Re: Knife of the Week! - 10/07/07 01:12 PM

This has already been in another post. Thanks for all the great information. There are couple of new pics. The Nambu pistol was brought back from the Philipines by my father, the 1942 canteen and the 1944 cup were bought for a couple of bucks apiece at the Army/Navy store when I was a kid. Used to use them for Boy Scout campouts.

The following text was copied from my previous post.

The knife was given to me by a neighbor of my parents over 25 years ago. I must have been around 16-17, and had grown up with these folks as neighbors and family friends.

The husband had recently passed, and the widow was over for dinner. Before we ate, she told me she had something she wanted to give me. She put a big knife in my hands and told me that her husband's brother had given it to him before he went to China to serve with the 14th Air force (he was not a flyer).

Caroline, who had been a BAM in the war, was a tough old gal, and she told me that Rod had "killed a Jap" with the knife. She said this in a way that I believed her, and I had talked to her husband a good deal about the war and I have little doubt that it is true. They were the type of people that did not say these sort of things lightly and I know where he served and some of what he went through.

She then went on to demonstrate the best way to use the thing, and that I'll leave to your imagination.

When she walked out of the room to go help my mother with dinner, I was standing there with the knife, a little spooked. My father, a WWII Pacific Vet, who had been in the room while she was giving me the knife and telling me the story, got an odd look and said, "That's his Randall. He showed me that knife. My god, she just gave you his Randall." He looked at me for a minute and then he left the room and I was standing there with something I didn't understand but that I knew was special.

I realize that this is a pretty incredible second hand story from someone none of you know, and I'd probably be sceptical too.

All I can say is that these were honorable people who both served. When the husband was still alive, I spent a good bit of time talking to him about the war. Fortunately I was always interested in it and he had some amazing stories. At the time, my father did not want to talk much about his service in the Pacific, so I talked to my neighbor.

Here's the amazing part.

Before the war he had been trained as a commercial artist and he had stacks of drawings and paintings that he had made during his time in China, as well as hundreds of photos and, believe it or not some color movies, which he screened for my family and me on several occaisions. He had insignia and flags from the squadron as well as a lot of other stuff that was like candy for a kid like me. It was like a museum.

What happened to all this stuff I have no idea. The widow subsequently moved to California to live with family, and they had been estranged from their only child for many years. She also has passed. I only hope that the stuff made its way into responsible hands as it was a veritable treasure trove of documentation, and the color movies are very rare. I'm sure I did not see all of the stuff but the photos and movies were amazing. My efforts to locate the family have not been successful.

That's the story behind the knife.

Re: Knife of the Week! - 10/07/07 01:30 PM

Ron said "Here's a circa 1943 fighter..." I'd just like to clarify that his knife is an 'earrrly' 1943 fighter, as attested to by the thick red spacers, thin aluminum end cap, and bent brass lanyard (thong) loop...as opposed to Cooter's 'late' 1943 fighter with medium red spacers, thicker aluminum end cap, and stainless steel lanyard loop...

There are other differences as well, which I'm sure that the readers here will spot, but those are the most obvious...good score on the sheath too btw Ron, nice lookin' package

Re: Knife of the Week! - 10/07/07 01:51 PM

In reference to the post above differentiating between an early 43 fighter and a "late" 43 fighter, I would not go as far as to say that steel wrist thong link fighter is late 43. The brass thong link was relatively short lived due to several reasons. One, brass was a regulated commodity by the WPO, and therefore not too easy to acquire through normal channels, particulary when you were low in the pecking order as was RMK. It is well known Bo often search junkyards looking for scrap brass or bronze for hilts and such. Secondly, the brass links were soft and tended to collapse with little force.

The steel link replaced the brass link in my estimation during the first half of the year. That is not to say a brass link was not used after a steel link was used, but for all practical purposes, the brass link preceded the steel link.

The following photo is of a reverse quillion 1943 fighter. You will notice the orientation of the brass thong link is pointing opposite of what was standard, towards the edge of the blade. This orientation would facilitate its use on an "edge-up" fighting style, a method of knife fighting Bo was promoting to some degree at the time. I believe this is the only knife/thong link I have seen set up in this fashion.

Interesting is an understatement.

That is one, really cool, tricked out #1-8". By the looks of the military belt holder, and the brown snaps, that knife might have been in Korea or early Vietnam even.

Nobody likes to be the one proven wrong, especially if you believe you are correct. But passionate discussions like this give newbies like you & I access to knowledge that we otherwise would be without. Believe it or not sometimes when they debate things you will be the one to benefit. Ever watch one of the guys here who knows what he's talking about tell some one who just posted a picture about his knife & wants to be enlightened? It's like talking to a Doctor, sometimes what & how they say it sends ya off with more questions than when ya started! My point is that they get more detailed with each other than when it's just one of them. JMO

Hey Y'all,
I'm new here and I read a lot more than I post. I enjoy seeing all the Randalls both old and new but I'm confused. It seems to me that there is a lot of guessing going on about when something was made. I get ever more flummoxed when the disagreement deals with a difference of say 6 months on a knife that's 65 years old.
I truly don't see how it makes a tinker's damn anyway. I'm not trying to fuel the feud and I'm not taking sides (though I do have an opinion), I'm just wondering.

Cutup,

We have a little urination contest going on between two very knowledgable members. I learn from both of them.

They have such a vast knowledge on the subject that to them the 6 months makes a difference, to me or you it seems like splitting hairs, but both are trying to be as correct as possible in the dating of the Randall knife.

Re: Knife of the Week! - 10/08/07 01:30 AM

Cutup, If one of your kids was doing a geneology report on your family, wouldn't it help if they knew the doctors name that delivered you, what hospital you were born in (or maybe what kind of taxi on the way)? Wouldn't it also be important for them to know the day, week, month, and year that you took your first breath?

If you took the average 50-70 year old man off the street, and just by what he was wearing and the cut of his jib, would you be able to pin down his birthday within a few months? If you could, some might consider you a genius, or at least a wizard.

The more you get into the collecting and lore of RMK, you may want to even know the three generations that have been hands-on involved in their manufacture, and maybe even go see the place where they have been hand-made for the last 70 years?

Just some thoughts.

This one's pretty rare for a couple of reasons:

1. It's a fighter in a translucent sheath ("Tranny's" were typically mid 40's and "between" wars).

2. Finger-grooved leather handle (Uncommon for a 40's knife).

Don't own it any more, but sure enjoyed it while I had it.

Awesome knives. Joe,like Dale said "You can't order old". Mitchell, our buddy Chief really likes the forward curved hilt. Your knife has shown me why.
Rick,
Thanks for the age of your knife. Dale and I had a side wager on the age. I will need to drop a can of pop off at Dale's shop tonight.(We're high rollers )

Here's an unusual model #1 from around 1979-1980 with a real "Griffin" handle. I love the contours of this handle shape.

Re: Knife of the Week! - 10/09/07 08:21 AM

In 1988 a small local marine repair company won a contract to replace the teak decking around the number three gun turret of the battleship Iowa. I managed to finagle a few pieces of the original teak. This was quite an acquisition since these old "planks" are usually reserved for the officers and sailors that have served aboard Iowa. Imagine if this wood could talk!
I ordered three knives (two model #15s and a model #1) and sent the material to the shop in March of 1989. On April 19, 1989, while the knives were being made, an explosion ripped through the number two gun turret killing 47 crewmen.
This is the model #1 marked U.S.S. IOWA BB 61

Steve,
Might as well face it you're addicted to........... Randalls!
The good news is that you already own what would be the center piece of most collections. You need to get Bob Gaddis's book "Randall Made Knives: The History Of The Man And The Blades".... read it from cover to cover...then start building your collection!

Bill I'm a big fan of the sawteeth/No sawteeth grind. The model 1 is the only fighter that has this option & doesn't change the blade design. The only problem I have with your knife is that it's not mine Absolutely Beautiful model 1!!!! In my opinion the limit of 5 options on the model 1 makes it the hardest to design & be happy with as I like to many of the options! My idea of a model 1 is:
1) stainless
2) sawteeth/no sawteeth grind
3) nickel silver hilt
4) forward curve
5) nickel silver collar / or metal spacers
6) nickel silver butt cap or plate
7) stag or custom wood
8) a choice of handle shape if in wood / finger grips if stag

See Ya, Chief

Re: Knife of the Week! - 07/26/08 11:16 AM

Roger that Chief! I was referring to your beautiful Mod 1. You said it had "almost all the options I like." I thought I saw all of them including ST/NST. I like ST a lot too and have some Mod 1's 14's and 16's with ST. I reckon you need the sawteeth more than I do to fend off them gators! Of course in TEXAS, a hombre needs the sawteeth to fend of them javelinas! Ha, Ha, I don't think these safe queens will get any blood on them, or will they? Later, Bill J.

Re: Knife of the Week! - 07/26/08 11:20 AM

Good choice, Steve. My first Randall was a 1-7 that I bought from AG Russell in 19??. You can guess the year, it was below $300 including shipping. After that, I was hooked. When a knife guy gets one of these in his hands, it's all over, "Mama hold the mortgage payment"! Bill J.

John, the "Buckeye" came from my friend Billy "Pup" Cochrane. You may know he runs Vintageknives.com. I have bought quite a few knives and RMKs from Billy and EVERYONE of them was better than advertised. He is a straight shootin' knife dealer and knows his Randalls. He gets very nice RMKs in from time to time and they don't last long, so you have to check his website often or call him. He will let you know about special incoming RMKs. I highly recommend him, here is the link to his website in case you haven't visited Billy down there in Mississippi. Picture "borrowed" from Billy's website. It says "Even in Hard Times We Are Still Blessed"

I'm looking for my own old Randall No. 1. It has (had, maybe) my name, Michael R. Allen on the blade; carbon, stag, aluminum butt, brass hilt and dark rivot sheath. It also had the original 1967 catalog and letter in an envelope with Lt. Michael Allen address. I was hard up about 15 years ago and had to sell a few items to keep my house. I sold it to Rhett and he re-sold it soon thereafter and doesn't have a record of who he sold it to. If I can find the now-owner, I would make it worth their while to sell it back to me. Thanks-

just google "RENAISSANCE WAX" its a micro crystalline wax used for many applications and particularly good for keeping knife blades protected, normally it is applied left to dry and then buffed to leave an invisible layer.

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 02/22/09 02:00 AM

Here's a well used early 1960's model 1-8, if they could only talk, probably have some interesting stories. What's unique about this one is the sharpening stone, at least unique to me because I'd never seen one before, a solid piece of steel, maybe someone in the know can share their thoughts or opinions...
Posted by: lummox

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 02/22/09 08:08 AM

There was a steel like that in the pocket of a 1972 Schrade-Walden model 171 UH Pro Hunter that I bought. I don't know if Randall ever used those; might be a replacement. Repeat: I don't know if Randall ever used those.
Posted by: Don_Hedrick

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 02/22/09 05:47 PM

The origional stone could have gotten lost and the owner cut a piece of steel to fit the pocket, just to keep the shape. It doesn`t look like the steel piece has any sharpening qualities at all, but that`s just my oninion. A really nice old Randall tho!

Our good friend, Kent Warnberg, wanted to share some of his knives and sheaths with us. Here's a great Model 1-7" with a seal skin sheath from Alaska. The knife has a black micarta handle with silver airborne wings embedded by Doug Cream. Kent says the skin looks somewhat like a Holstein cow. Mooooooo. But I personally have touched a few Holsteins in my day, and this skin is feather soft.
Thanks,
Kevin

Doug Cream did the inletting for my jumpwings, and he really did a awesome job!
This seal skin came from Alaska, and I think that it matches this knife well!

Re: Knife of the Week! - 04/23/09 05:29 PM

I recently bought a Model 1-7 that looks just like the one of yours on top. I wondered if you knew anything about its age or handle material. Someone said they thought it was Maple Burl and available only through A. G. Russell in the 1970s. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Knife of the Week! - 04/23/09 05:43 PM

These Model #1's were and, to the best of my knowledge still "are" available. A.G. Russell did buy a boatload of the maple burl, but it is still available to anyone today, and was never any sort of an exculsive.
Best, Capt. Chris
P.S. I'll try and get your attachment up here... The knife is no earlier than around 1992. Sorry you were mis-informed...It looks to be a couple of years old to me...CCS

Re: Knife of the Week! - 04/23/09 07:23 PM

GalvestonGuy,

I will tell you what I know.

1. Is this exact configuration available today? Yes and always has been as far as I know.

Some years back AG Russell commissioned a good number of this configuration using Golden Maple Burl which they supplied. Many say the number was 200. It was in their on-line catalog up until about a year ago but was always listed as Sold Out as far back as I was watching (Several Years) although it was removed from the AG Russell web site about a year ago.

A couple of years ago I purchased an identical knife from and Authorized RMK Dealer who was selling it on consignment. The photo below is that knife. Not too long after I purchased the knife I had it with me during a visit to the RMK Shop. I was dropping off another RMK to have a name buffed off the blade and Gary Randall asked me what else I had in my bag which led to me showing him another 8 to 10 RMK's I had in my carry bag which was quite a treat to say the least. Gary took one look at this knife and immediately said it must have been one of the knives that was ordered by AG Russell. How did he know that? I don't know, maybe from the type of Maple Burl or something but that's all I can tell you. If yours is one of the knives ordered and sold by AG Russell I don't think it would go back any further back than the year 2000 or so but remember anyone can order this configuration from RMK and it will come with shop supplied Maple which is beautiful as well.

I hope this helps.

Beautiful knife Tom. That handle has one fantastic piece of wood on it.

Re: Knife of the Week! - 04/23/09 09:10 PM

Thanks Steve,

I think it is probably the 2nd. or 3rd. RMK I acquired and is one that I will keep for the duration. Aside from the handle it is the first and only RMK blade I have in Tool Steel. If I did not live in Florida I would have more in the 01 tool steel. I think the tool steel has a totally different sheen and feel to it as compared to the SS and this knife probably has the sharpest edge of all of my RMK's.

Just picked this 1-8 APFK in a trade. The photos really don't do the handle justice. I really like the polished stag handle. If my count is correct I believe it has 7 options. I'm sure the experts will let me know if I'm right or wrong, which I'll appreciate greatly. It has the Saw/No Saw grind, I really find it intriquing compared to the standard grind #1's I have. I'll also post pictures in the SHAG thread.

I'd like to add my new addition. This is circa Korean War theatre. It sort of epitomizes the Randall fighter knife. It's not fancy........it just sort of walked right out of the pages of history.

The early 50's knives have the best lines.... great sheath and stone. You don't see many fishhook stones.

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 01/24/11 09:30 PM

This is a Model 1 with a handle of stabilized Spalted Maple and nickel silver hardware. Spalting is the result of fungal attack and the tree responds to it by creating barriers that result in black lines and interesting wood patterns. Maple shows this characteristic better than most wood. The spalted wood is usually stabilized since the fungal attack may result in the wood being too soft for knife handles.

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 03/20/12 09:51 AM

Model #1's !!!!!!!

Great knives everyone.

Here is a cool one.... It's a mid 50's with a 7" blade, nickel silver hilt, aluminum butt cap....and finger grip ivory.

As with 99% of all old ivory...it has a couple of checks.

The sheath is a transitional Heiser as they were moving away from the early 50's wide stone flap. It still has the horizontal keeper strap. Notice the odd snap on the keeper. During the mid 50's there was a shortage of brown button snaps. You will see several variants of metal snaps, as well as mixed snaps like this one. The keepers were set at the shop, not at Heiser.

Here is another old ivory.... late 40's, with an 8" blade. Nickel silver hilt, aluminum butt cap. Notice the difference in the choils. During the 40's the choils were not nearly as "fish hook" shaped. In the early 50's they really became deep and hooked.....up until the early 60's where they returned to a shape more like the 40's.

It's in a riveted Heiser with translucent snaps. The translucents were introduced in the late 40's but (as I understand it) were not very durable and were replaced by brown buttons.

You'll see translucent more often on field knives and Bowies since fighters were in low demand between WW2 and Korea.

These two knives show the difference in the width of the stone pouch flap between the late 40's and the mid 50's. They continued to get more narrow, and the keeper strap went to a diagonal.

If you are bored, you can see some examples in my 50's album.

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 03/20/12 03:31 PM

This is a Model 1 that replaced my original 1962 one that I carried in Germany. It was lost by a friend KIA in Quang Tri.
There are two 20mm cases, headstamped "1944" and one 37mm stamped "1943" and marked "SHOT.APCM51". These brass cartridge cases were picked up by my father on Corregidor in 1945. Another one (not shown) is stamped "1928" with a primer marked "1934"; that's how pittifully ill- prepared we were then for the outbreak of WWII.

This's my last "twist" on a APFK with a nice story.
Artist is the Italian Master screemshander Roberto Bruci.
I will disclose this knife' story...later on.
I know some "purist" will blame at a "trapper" on a APFK...
I do like the Artist's work and...dont care about where it is !

Re: Knife of the Week! - 05/25/12 02:27 PM

That "All Purpose" #1 would make a great trapper and mountain man knife! Especially with the single hilt and thumb notches. Is that a six inch blade? It looks perfect.

Re: Knife of the Week! - 05/25/12 03:31 PM

Guido,

That's a beautiful APTK (All Purpose Trapper's Knife). smile

What's the handle material?
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Knife of the Week! - 05/25/12 04:52 PM

As far as the "Purists" go (I'm not even sure what that would be) the #1 with a single hilt and thumb notches is nothing more than an "improved" #5, Camp and Trail. The thumb nothces are cut into the top cutout, leaving less chance of slippage. The "Crow's beak" prevents the hand from slipping off the back of the knife, making it ideal for trapping muskrat, beaver or mink. I think this Italian guy is way ahead of the curve on this one.
Bravo Guido, Capt. Chris

Guido,

Would that collection happen to be that of Luigi Peppini? I understood his collection was second to none, particularly as far as Loveless knives were concerned.

Re: Knife of the Week! - 05/26/12 02:42 PM

Guido can brag all he wants to, but doubt he can beat THIS.....this is an ivory handle which has been scrimshawed to look exactly like leather...the latest rage in super-realism in art...

A stunning work of art, Guido....your collection is stunning, and i wonder how you exhibit them....putting them in a safe would be like taking Rembrandt and Degas, rolling them up and putting them in a filing cabinet.

I believe that Guido has posted photos of his "Knife Drawers Cabinet" in the past on the forum. Perhaps he can post a few photos again. I do know that when he goes to the Major Knife Shows and posted pictures of those shows, the Randall Knives are displayed in stunning display cases.

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 10/14/13 12:33 PM

Pete,

According my data on the overall view of the Model 1 in your post, the file size was about 1.60 MB file size, which is under the 1.95 MB file size in the File Manager box.

Your resolution was on target at 72 dpi, however the dimensions of the photo appeared to be 42" X 31" in my Photoshop screen. So, the dimensions of your image need to be scaled down.

I recommend using a file size under 1 MB, even 1/2 MB (500KB) for an image to post. The file size can be reduced either on the camera or on your computer's photo editing program. For example, I resized your photo to a 8" X 6" image size & 534 KB file size.

Your camera's menu should have probably in the "Set-up" sub-menu a selection of file sizes, large, medium, and small. For displaying only on-line, try the medium or small file size. It depends also on the megapixel size of your camera. Even a 5 megapixel image is capable of printing an 8 X 10" photo.

I'm not a PC user, so all my experience has been with Apple's photo editing program, "iPhoto" and lately with Adobe's Photoshop.

If you're going to do a lot of photo editing for photo printing or online displays, I highly recommend Adobe's Photoshop Elements, currently version 12. Its amazing what this little program can do for less than $100.

My photo is a 5" X 7" at 100 dpi at 565KB.

Hope this helps.

Not a shop rivet..... It could have easily been added. The thick center spacer dates it to the late 70's to mid 80's.

Sure, happy to share ... its something I've been working on for a while, about ready to put it to community for comment/discussion. The Randall stamp on the blade of the knife in question seems to have been introduced about 1966-1968 or so. It is apparently different from the stamp used previously, all the way back to the '40s.

The sheath is of a gendre that has been thoroughly discussed... either a brown button Heiser-made with Randall-made stamp, production of which probably began in early 1959 and ended early 1963, or a brown button Heiser with Heiser stamp, production of which probably ended early 1959. Note: The Model 1 brown button Heiser sheaths with Randall-made stamp were well stocked when the change to Johnson manufacture was made. They were still being shipped a couple of years later, after other models were not only being shipped in Johnson sheaths but already had transitioned to baby dot snaps.

That's a cool looking knife!

At least 6 options and maybe 7 depending on if the handle shape was an option and I'm not sure if the FCH is interchangeable with the std. hilt without it being counted as an option.

I don't know if you get an answer about that rig.
Many years ago, and after watching the movie "Exposure" (also known as "High Art") with Peter Coyote, I contact Gary Randall in order to ask him where I could get a leather shoulder sheath. He send me the address and phone of Greg Gutcher, from Sullivans. I contact Greg and he made me one of those for a standard 8" #1. Some time after that I began making leather sheaths for me and for some friends and I was able to make a leather shoulder sheath, but changing the original design. Instead of carrying the knife below the left arm, I made the rig so you can carry the knife below the right arms, knowing I am a right handed. So you could still carry a gun on your left side.

Buy the way, this is my #1 and the sheath I made. (the skull is a plastic model for schools)

We have our hands full up here in Canada this week, with Islamic terrorists ambushing and murdering individual members of our military. Thanks to our gun laws, only the criminals have firearms. But it is comforting to know that such laws, so far, do not extend to knives. So now I carry a model one, in the hope that, if confronted by one of these bozos, I can help him on his way to paradise.

I like the Springfield's. Looking for another one now. I enjoy the hunt. Hope you stick around the forums. You can find out just about anything here. I don't know why I'm the only one to respond here. Sorry that I couldn't be more specific on the sheath. I have forgotten about everything I ever learned about these Randall's. The Southern Saddlery sheaths looked cheap to me and this sheath appears to be a better made product. The flap on the pocket looks like the flaps that a Mr. Moore made. Anyway hopefully someone will come on and explain it all. If not I will get my books out and see what I can dig up. Goodnight and welcome to the forum.

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 11/16/14 03:09 PM

Here is one I picked up recently.

It's a 1943 knife in an Von Lengerke & Antoine sheath. Most of the fighters sold by VL&A were shipped from the shop without sheathes and fitted at the store.

The fighter Bo designed with Zackarias in late 1942 had a pronounced hump on the back of the blade. There was a short period of time in 1943 when the hump went away and the grinds seemed flatter. This is one of those knives.

The hilt and butt cap are very thin and the handle is smaller in diameter with more taper towards the butt.

Later in 1943 the hump came back into the pattern.

The three knives in the second photo were made within a one year period. There was a lot more variation in the grind, hilts, spacers and handles prior to later 1944

The bottom knife in the bottom picture, do you think the top quillon came from RMK that way or it was a personal alteration?

It is also interesting to see the differences in thickness and lengths of the hilts.

Here is a #1 that I bought recently. The seller advertised it as having an ivory micarta handle. When I got the knife, I was puzzled by the nature of the handle material. In the hand, it feels like polished stag, but the butcher paper that came with the knife says it's ivory micarta. (The notations are correct on all other details.) What do you think it is? Also, about when do you think it might have been made? The sheath is a modern one with the Randall logo on the snaps.

Posted by: crutchtip

Re: Knife of the Week! - 12/08/14 04:20 PM

My guess is he is not a "front line" guy and he even alluded to that by making a "work detail" reference. Doesn't appear to be a callus on his hand.

Also his comment about he isn't worried about the blade being shiny because "when you draw it out on somebody you are already on top of them so it won't matter if it is shiny at that point", well, I am throwing a flag on that one.

Had he done any research or had any knowledge of RMK's, he would have known that the sheath was not compatible with MOLLE and other options are available. Funny is most guys apparently still use the tried and true method of carry or adapt to another form of carry.

On top of that, the "duralumin" buttcap has been around since the 1940's and really not too many complaints to this point. So a guy that is in the rear with the gear is worried about it? I say fix it. Dull it up, blacken it, whatever, but my guess is it will never see anything but opening letters back at HQ so "it wont matter at that point".

I have several gun with antique gold micarta grips.

It seems to be same as mine. Last fine weave linen and modern enough to be epoxy instead of phenol so should keep color better.

Most good stuff no more in US due to EPA and OSHA.

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 01/16/15 08:04 PM

Buckspen, this is an interesting knife in that it is a blade shaped by me, yet I also marked the paper to be shipped! So, since I was no longer shaping blades after 1999, I believe this is an earlier 90's knife with the Ivorite micarta with Mike Wilson finger grooves that had come in for a refinish after then and then shipped back out by me, thus my writing on the paper.

Correct if wrong but normal guard sculpted from flat piece, thicker piece allow more carved curve?

But if tip of guard extend back past flat in handle then tip bent back or really huge brass used and everything carved away but tip. And they did no work guard separate from handle? Only all together?

Mystery as brass crack when bent, heat would burn leather and spacer. Maybe huge brass after all? Casting with more bent back top? Or bent and tilted? Front guard in photo suggest top pushed back but not good photo for detail as that.

Received this from the shop a few weeks ago. This thing is awesome, even with the wait. I can tell you if you even touch something forward of the lugged hilt your gonna bleed. It's long and sleek and the handle is perfect, seems a little longer than usual. I ordered a #2-8" to match. Hopefully it will follow in a few months.

JIMMY, THAT IS A BEAUTIFUL KNIFE!

Love the small fine tooth work on top (I count 37 teeth).
The lugged Hilt sets the blade off too. Will be an attention getter around the troops.

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 04/05/15 09:13 PM

It does appear to be longer, but likely a distortion caused by use of a wide-angle lens setting.

Reminds me a little of the Model 1-18" that I flagged down at the 2007 0r 2008 Blade Show. He was looking for Rhett, so I put him within Rhett's "roving eye field". I believe it in the RKS newsletter.

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 07/14/15 10:35 PM

For one the throat of the sheath would be wider if it was Korean War vintage.
Still a very nice knife....one that could have easily been carried in Nam.
Posted by: crutchtip

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 07/14/15 11:24 PM

Korean War was "over" by mid- 1953. I think the sheath is a bit late for that. Five equal spacers is mid-50's all the way. Looks to have an acorn nut also.

Here are two Korean era pieces. Note the three thick two thin spacer arrangement. thanks to Tune for photos.
Posted by: tunefink

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 07/14/15 11:26 PM

Flared throats on model #1's were not so much an early 50's trait. I have seen later 50's knives with wide throats. This is a brass nut, wide flap, early 50's knife.... pretty straight.

Pretty knife, huh Burnie???? cool

Posted by: crutchtip

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 07/14/15 11:37 PM

Again thanks to Tune, here is a mid-50s knife with the five medium spacers like Bruce's knife, basically the same knife as his.

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 07/15/15 09:23 AM

My interest in early #1s was greatly stimulated by the extensive discussion of Heiser/HKL/Johnson sheaths in this forum a few months ago. I decided to find examples of these knives with their representative sheaths. Mitchell and Burnie have been very helpful in this and I had a great discussion with Joe (Crutchtip) when I met him in person for the first time at Blade this year.
Thanks, guys!

On the 'Nam era 1-8, if it were me, I would put something in the want to buy section of this forum. I expect that there are folks here who may have what you're looking for. I would definitely not try to buy one on eBay unless you really know what you're doing. There are folks here you can trust to sell you the real deal. Not necessarily the case on the eBay where sellers may or may not know what they're doing and may or may not be honest.

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 02/10/16 12:30 PM

Although a great idea and a lot of money, the decision to change to frequency really hurt the sales of these watches. I got rid of mine, just in time! If you are lost at sea or "known-to-be" lost elsewhere, the frequency will be monitored...??? Other than that, no dice! I would love to know the thinking behind such a change. I guarantee Breitling had nothing to do with it.

Yes, Warren, I traded "in" and still have it. Just finally dug it out to take a look at it. as far as the color of the micarta, it has always been that color since I've had it. I do wonder if the grey spacers were always grey. They have been since I've had it.

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 02/10/16 09:45 PM

could be alum spacers that have oxidized which would look grey. I bet Scott would know.

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 02/10/16 09:48 PM

Pat,

I have a number of knives with grey spacers. They never started that way. Both blue and reds faded over time. I always thought of it as age patina. In any case, that's a great rig.

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 02/10/16 10:18 PM

Thanks, for the props, guys.
Here's another one. This is the second Randall I ever bought. I bought it from The Good Captain at a local gun show back when he used to trek this far north. It was sometime around 94 or 95 I think. As for a little perspective regarding another thread about Randall values, it was one of the more expensive knives on his table at $315. I think I could make a modest profit were I to decide to sell it. (which I wouldn't)

Late 70's early 80's red fibers were red till we shaped them, then they turned out to have a gray center to them...that's right, the red fibers turned gray with a very slight red on the outside of the gray...u can see the red if you really look close...

Also the center blue fibers were a grayish blue with more gray tint than blue...

Got that?

Scott,

Was this due to the sanding/ buffing materials back in the day? Sorry if this was discussed before. I always thought it was faded from age.

I really like mine but I have to say Billy that I have a slight preference for your spacer arrangement and also the no hone sheath. The sheaths with hones are obviously an RMK classic but the no hones, especially the black, look better to me with certain knives. I love the RB but only have one other knife that has it. I think I need to do something about that.

Posted by: william768

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 06/13/16 05:37 PM

If it was "Randall Shop Made " it probably would have sold already.

The seller is being pretty honest and states " IF Randall would have ever made it , it would look like this".

Title also States "Modified" .

I saw it first day it got listed .
Posted by: desert.snake

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 06/13/16 06:07 PM

Many sellers are often wrong in the description.
One time I got a knife from the tibia wolf,
the seller is listed as polished stag))

But now seller wrote correctly - I see another shade
of the alloy guard and alloy subhilt,
and spacers have more a fresh, bright color.
It was enough to look via better monitor
(I have 2 monitors - LED and tube monitor,
tube monitor somehow better shows, but takes up more space)

I had a CMP Korean era gun with all CMP papers, and the thing appeared unfired, and eventually decided to let someone else deal with it while I went back to more obviously used guns for shooting. Still my favorite true rifle for everything except humping, along with its twin son of different mothers M14.

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 12/02/17 01:25 PM

The model ones have so many options that are great to get but alas we are now limited to 5.
Even with the Ward Gay handle to me the killer part is The FCH in Nickel silver as it is 2 options that you almost never see on a model 1.
While I prefer the sawteeth / No sawteeth grind this was to good to pass on, as I almost never see this set up.
Also if I could have made this knife it wouldn't have micarta or a compass or thong hole.
Amazing how so many options that you will be OK with just to get your favorites!

Those Knives are beautiful Chief!!!

The handle material on nate-dogg his model 1 is real pretty Box Elder Burl! I would buy a piece If I could find it. The knife comes from Rick Bowles, who also had some Honduras Rosewood Burl blocks (which were not for sale unfortunately). That stuff is also real pretty, but it seems to be also real difficult to find a piece of this quality. But man, it is nice stuff!

I originally ordered the knives with black sheaths through the shop.
The black sets off the spacers and handles.
Interesting preferences - I like the white with the gold tones of the pine cone. The pictures of the Randall 11 show what the pine cone handle looks like before Behring Made Knives worked their magic.
My wife likes the red
My daughter likes the blue
My daughter painted a picture of the American Flag with a Bald Eagle's head overlay. The 3 Model 1's will live in a 3-knife Oak Display Case that Tom Clinton had made up years ago, with the painting above the case.

James, I know this is taking us off topic, so I'll be quick... is the declination of your compass correct for Germany? I recall the Eastern US coast GM angle being about 80 mils off. Looks like yours is about 3200 mils!

Ha ha! I have no idea. I bought it just as a background item for my pictures and didn't play around with it (honestly speaking don't even know how this thing works) .... :-)
Posted by: Wally

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 03/25/19 09:56 AM

James, you probably first noticed the dial is calibrated in mils,(0-6400) instead of degrees. There is an adjustment screw on the left side that moves the scale. When looking at a topographical map you will find a "GM" (grid to magnetic) conversion graphin the legend, telling you what change to apply to the compass for that particular map's location. This permits accurate navigation without having to figure the GM angle every time you consult the compass. It is calibrated in mils rather than degrees for artillerymen. This particular compass also allows for measurement of "site to crest", determining the lowest angle at which artillery may be safely fired from a position. In a former life I was an Artillery Gunnery Sergeant, hence my rant. Love the knife, and the compass!

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 09/06/19 11:30 AM

Yes, nice knives and an interesting observation by Peter. It has me wondering about where the downward slant on the upper part of the blade typically ends. If it ends at the same distance from the hilt on all model 1's regardless of blade length then an 8 would likely appear more "pointy" than would a shorter length blade. If, instead, the slant ends/begins at different points for different blade lengths to make things more proportional then less "pointy effect" but obviously it could vary depending on who in the shop is making the particular knife I suppose given that these are all hand made. Interesting (to me) bit of RMK trivia on how it's done. Or, it could all just be a matter of the photo angle.
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 09/06/19 01:03 PM

It looks similar to an "STN" grind to me...

Re: Knife of the Week! RMK Model #1!!! - 09/06/19 01:14 PM

A very nice Model #1! Purely a guess, but I would think lugged hilts could've been ordered by 1954, though probably gained popularity on fighting models when Vietnam began. What's your handle's material?

good to see you post jim.

I don't believe that knife is Korean vintage, but later 50's to early 60's as you originally said. The Bowie didn't even come out to 53-54 so lugged hilt wasn't even available during the war. Plus, first showing up in the catalog as available on other models would also seem to preclude it from being available in the early 50's on a model 1.

A very beautiful Nr. 1, Larry. I like sawteeth on a Nr 1.

Just received this one via the excellent services of Nordic knives.

Randall Nr. 1 7" blade.
Guard and pommel of nickel silver, aluminum/black spacers and a nice handle of shop supplied walnut. Waxed sheath. Coloring of the sheath goes very well with the handle.

Needless to say I am very happy with this one.

Yes, it sure is a beautiful handle. The walnut is shop supplied. Perhaps it is stabilised, it says so in the Randall catalog. They gave me this after twice rejecting my own black walnut burl :-). The piece they put on a matching Nr 2 is even more stunning. I'll post that one on the Nr. 2 page.
