Re: Three-fer Thursday! - 10/12/23 06:13 PM
Very nice Capitan !!!
3 Model #10's outta' The Captain's "STASH", built during Dave Griffin's watch. Austrian flame maple, Scaled elephant ivory & shop-supplied green micarta.
Back during this time period the green micarta was canvas based and was OD green in color...great stuff!
All 3 are drop points and the ivory is a 4 1/2" blade! Dave "butched-up" the OD green handle and I have used the crap out of it.
Happy 3-fer-Thursday!
Capt. Chris

Re: Three-fer Thursday! - 10/26/23 03:30 PM
Note that the "green" ain't so green any more.
And the handle is scalloped like the Crider Special.
Larry
It's also far more thick! Dave's influence.
CCS
Members,
It took me a bit of time to dig through The Captain's "STASH"...but I knew I still had this "3-fer" and wanted to share them with you.
The top #4-5" is the oldest and still has it's original Heiser sheath. The other "2" came later but are "still" 7-spacer knives..., sheathed in tight-stitched, Maurice Johnson, Baby dot snapped sheaths. These 2 are from the late 1960's-early 1970's.
All 3 were RMK shop-made, according to Pete. The lower one is interesting by it's much more unique blade shaping. Similar to a Bowles Special but 2 decades earlier. Just an interesting "trio"...I hope you agree.
Stay Sharp,
Capt. Chris

Re: Three-fer Thursday! - 02/24/24 03:34 PM
I am gonna offer an opinion. Unless a custom order, which is unlikely, it wouldn't be out of the question that that bottom knife was "tipped" and "repaired" at the shop. I believe ti started life as a model 4. Note the center bevel line is not in line with the tip as on the model 4's. I don't think RMK was making anything resembling a Green River Skinner prior to the Bowles knives that I have seen, until now
Joe,
I hear ya' and get where you're coming from..."but"..I had a #12-9" made at the shop in 1984 with a #18 style hilt Black micarta #14 style handle "&"...Tiny "sawteeth". It was not uncommon for the shop to custom-make a knife for a customer until late 1980's..."&" Pete remembered it. Could it have been a regrind of some type. Of course,,,,just sayin'.
Capt. Chris
PS: I sold that #12-9" to Glynn Martin (The guy who made the "original" wood-burnt signs. I saw it here, or FB, or Ebay for sale a few years back..."however"...in my defense, at that time...I always thought I'd be able to get another..???
