You are no doubt right. But when ask for and got "orange micarta" from Tom, I didn't ask what it really was.

BTW that knife sat in our NY PO Box for almost two years because we could not cross the border. Talk about how long is the wait for a RMK, sheeesh!

Randall Shaw-Leibowitz Special "LS" Green Micarta 6" Carbon Steel NS Non-etched SFG Teardrop.

Sherrill Shaw and Leonard Leibowitz were a talented husband and wife team that produced many collectable knives in the 1970's and early 1980’s.

Shaw-Leibowitz stopped production at 125 to 150 knives since this is what was ordered at the time.

A total of 300 blades for these knives were made. Gaddis’s book states 125 knives were finished with the Shaw-Leibowitz etching. An article in 1990 RKS newsletter in which it stated 144 knives were made with the Shaw-Leibowitz etching. Randall dealer, Jack Crider, was able to get the other blades and had them made up in many different handles, but these knives were not etched.

Re: Micarta Monday!! - 12/19/22 08:30 AM

Back in the day, when you ordered green micarta from the shop, you got this: Green "canvas" micarta, which was actually more "OD"-"LIGHT BROWN" in color after some time had passed. I believe this "Stasher" was made in the early ages of Sullivan's sheaths as is evident by the "baby dot" snaps and linen stitching!

S/N 28: Bearcamp Special in "white lineal micarta"...&, yes: It cracks! (That's why it was a very "short-lived" shop-supplied material). It makes it rare though...and on a Bearcamp...even more so.
Happy Micarta Monday,
Capt. Chris
PS: You "may" have noticed the "transitional" Sullivan's sheath. It was made, probably in 1997 or 98. That would explain the baby dot hone pocket snap..."BUT"...(There's that word again.)...When it was finally fitted to my knife, the pewter "logo" snaps were already the norm, i.e. 1999 or later. Just one more of those "things" that makes this RMK collecting interesting...CCS

Hello Captain
Thank you for showing this. I was unaware that Randall was using a
"NEW" Ivorite Micarta. Looks good. I am not familiar with this material.

Capt

Do you know if the “new” ivorite can be scrimmed? Heck I do not even know if the old Ivorite could be scrimmed?
Just curious.

I think it can be Rod. It looks "odd" at your 1st glance...but it grows on ya' (At least on me) in about 2-3 minutes!

It looks bright white.
I like the Summit White which is a bright white on the GMC Yukons.

WOW!
No posts since August of last year? Not good. Here's something interesting, micarta-related. Some examples of NASA handle material to include some brown micarta!
Stay Sharp, Capt. Chris
PS: I'll post a finished knife, made with NASA brown soon after this post. Some NASA brown is micarta, some is G-3, some is linen, some paper and some canvas based....just depended on the cheapest bid at the time!

Re: Micarta Monday!! - 02/19/24 03:42 PM

I’m still liking the KSC micarta, g-10 whatever it is!
And I’m liking the new ivorite. I still favor some of the other options though.
