Right to left:
Thuya, Thuya, Olive, Yew.

The second Thuya knife, I supplied the Thuya a few years before RMK offered it as a handle option.
The Yew came from Ireland.

I realize I am a day early for Wooden Wednesday, BUT…….

The 5-8”, don’t know what kind of wood is on the handle. Also that knife has NO thumb notches!
7” is Curly Maple. Think Capt owned this knife at one time. I bought from someone in Oregon or Washington.

ALL, each and every one, Outstanding Rod! One of my (& my favorite) Les Paul Bass guitars that I bought in 1973 is curly maple, still beautiful, and your #8 would blend in so well that it would “vanish” if laid on top of it. I started to post a pic but didn’t want to hijack this thread.
Dang if Pappy didn’t come up with another great idea!
You’re right near the top of my grateful list again Pap. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!!

Not sure of the wood. Could be rosewood, possibly ebony. Very dense and hard. I initially thought it was micarta. https://rmkcollector.com/made-7/

Re: Woody Wednesday! - 11/23/22 10:23 PM

Crutch--

Almost certainly ebony. Early stainless, as you know. And not checked/cracked like ebony is prone to do. Nice one.

I can't get photos of them, but have a couple that I had my 45-year-old African blackwood put on...I selected sticks with no contrasting color...when I got them back, I thought I might as well have had Micarta put on them!

Even more specific: The name for this beautiful wood is Royal White Ebony (Diospyros Embriopteris), coming from South East Asia (Burma and Laos), where the felling of these trees was only allowed to people from royal descent, hence the name.

Re: Woody Wednesday! - 11/26/22 08:27 AM

Like all of you, I really "like" beautiful wood.

Properly cured and/or stabilized, it is far less likely to crack than ivory--the other traditional natural material after stag.

Considering the possibility of wood cracking, it is a risk for the shop to offer their own wood along with their backing it up with their warranty.

But it sure adds something to a nice knife to dress it up using it.

Enjoyed all the knives, lusting after some of them, but nobody can have them all.

How about that. Kinda odd that someone would laminate wood in that fashion, and you are certain it is Pistachio wood? Seems like a lot of work slicing thin pieces of wood and laying them up like lasagna in alternating layers with the cloth. I suspect it is dyed as well.

That's it Steve, thanks. The 2nd row...2nd one in from the left, next to the photo with the girl in it...is what I'm familiar with. It can get quite expensive to buy...dry...send of and have stabilized...and get it installed at the Randall shop...but it's way-coool stuff.
Jack told me, when I ordered my pair, to just "drop off whatever handle material I wanted to use" at the Randall shop. When he saw the end result he was pissed, giving me that permission...(I know not why).
Stay Sharp, Capt. Chris

Re: Woody Wednesday! - 11/29/22 03:55 PM

Hey Walker, seems to me that a Crider in use, at least what to me it looks like it was built to be used for, would mean that it was in a high conflict situation buried deeply into the son of a gun one was locked in a life and death conflict with. Of course there may be other very appropriate uses. Just looks like what it was built for, to me.

Re: Woody Wednesday! - 11/29/22 04:41 PM

Mr Michael Mason said I caught his attention and peaked his interest (pg.1 this thread) when I posted a couple sentences about my curly maple ‘73 Gibson Les Paul bass so I’ll try to post a couple not so great pics. I’ve been fortunate enough to play her all these years for hundreds of hours up an down the southern east coast……Virginia’s eastern shore to West Palm Beach to West Texas and she’s never let me down even once. Rock & roll, blue grass, country, gospel, jazz and blues and she was absolutely beautiful every time; at least in my eyes.
Anyway, my pictures do not do her justice.

Re: Woody Wednesday! - 12/07/22 05:23 PM

Great woods shared here.

My "favorite" natural material is stag for variety of color, texture, and long-term durability.

Second choice is wood because of the variety of color and reflectivity in grains of different species. And when it is stabilized it competes with stag for durability.

Glad to see the images in both threads.

No history and do not know DOB. The blade measurements 3 3/8” compared to 3 7/8” for the 5-4”.
Just another RMK mystery.
I corresponded with Pete Hamilton for a few years, back in the early 2000’s. He said he had seen or known of one. Can’t remember his exact words. One thing that stands out was, “ I would not buy one without a sheath”.
The sheath was a big factor in me buying it.

No Larry this is an after market sheath I got Brian/Treeman knives. The sheath fits in my front right pocket. I do have the original as well.

The bottom one is...from the shop? Is it marked on the back?

I do not know where is came from, other than the knife was stored in it, from the looks of the sheath. No markings on it. I ask, because I do not know, did any of the mini sheaths come from the "standard" sheath makers?

Re: Woody Wednesday! - 12/08/22 11:28 AM

Rod--

Thanks for the informative reply.

Small blades can be nice EDC without shocking or intimidating people who might see them.

About the unmarked sheath for the Mini 5...maybe somebody at RMK could clarify if it came from the shop.

But the knife is nice in and of itself!

Re: Woody Wednesday! - 12/08/22 01:49 PM

Happy Woody Wednesday!
This one will involve some "history" and, to be honest, could be posted in "several" categories on these forums. This will be a 1st introduction (for the majority here) of the lesser-known of all dealer specials: The "ROD & GUN COMPANION"!
The late John Newell was an authorized dealer and owner of The Orvis Shop, Downeast. He had 2 locations: The 1st, oldest and original shop in Winter Park, Fl. and 2nd (later) in Disney's "Celebrations".
John was a friend of mine and a very interesting guy. Historic military career and an avid fisherman were some of John;s accomplishments. I was/am proud to say I enjoyed spending time with John and "rigged" a dozen various fly rod, reel & line combinations for him to include backing, nails knots, perfection loops etc... some of these rigs held world records at one time or another!
John also had his very own "Dealer Special", called
The "Rod & Gun Companion". This knife had very exclusive lineage, described below:
* Custom blade length "Trout & Bird Model"
* 4 1/2" blade length
* Special stainless steel used
* AEB-L stainless
* Thumb notches included
* Special single finger grip handle
* Custom walnut (Claro) used
* Wrist thong
* Johnny Johnson roughback sheath (butterfly-stitched)
* Baby dot snaps
* Blade etched R&G *** (serial number)
I retrieved this splendid example outta' The Captain's "STASH" and just now completed the photos. I hope you like it and (maybe/perhaps) learned a way-cool piece of RMK history along the way today.
Stay Sharp, Capt. Chris

What years was this Special made?

How many R&G Specials were made?

Has anyone picked up this Special? A 4.5" #8 would make a great user.

The spacers (only "3")and wrong sheath would indicate to me that this was not "shop-made". "Could be"? Yes...but it looks like a Gail White knife to me. Gail always used, at least one, black spacer(s).

Several material suppliers set up booths at the Blade Show in Atlanta in June.

One of the bigger setups is Masecraft, they also have a website: https://www.masecraftsupply.com/Stabilized-Woods_c_334.html?viewall=1

Keep in mind that when you submit blocks to the shop, there are specific dimensions (with a range), depending on which knife you want built.

If you go through a dealer, they can walk you through the size requirements. In the Randall ordering questions" thread the sizing sheet on Randall letterhead was posted (several times, actually). As soon as I find the specific post I'll update this one.

Re: Woody Wednesday! - 07/19/23 11:16 AM

Woody Wednesday:
Sounds good. How about a "story"? 11 years ago I offered a rare, unique package to "genuine" Florida "Crackers". Dubie was the 1st to sign on with it.
I acquired some 4x4 pieces of genuine Florida lignum vitae that was salvaged from an old Key West home. Cut into shorter, more manageable lengths, I had my buddy (& RKCC Charter Member) Gene Beal cut the wood to size. We burned-up 2 carbide ban saw blades getting it done!
Pics below:
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Re: Woody Wednesday! - 07/19/23 11:26 AM

Here's one of the "Cracker" knives, upon completion. The blade etching, LONG LIFE, "CRACKER" has 2 meanings or wishes. Only Florida Crackers were eligible to get these, and the "long life" extends the well-wishes...along with the fact that "Lignum Vitae" is from the Latin: "long life" or "wood of life"...(I've heard both and am sure only "1" is correct).
Pictured below is an early "Cracker" knife.
