Sheath Info Needed, Selling Shortly

Sheath Info Needed, Selling Shortly - 04/05/21 08:58 PM

Hi all,

This one arrived with an S-Guard Bone knife I took in on consignment, with the 1-6 on it I'm assuming it was a knife / sheath match error along the way. Keeper snap has pulled away, stone obviously used. I'll probably sell the knife and sheath separately, they don't belong together.

Any stabs at a date of manufacture?

Thanks in advance,
Miles

I would say early 60’s. Maybe even late 50’s. The snap can be replaced.

Probably 70's to 80's.

Looks like a model 4 sheath

I thought the same with respect to looks but... the stamp

The stamp is the standard Johnson stamp.....sheath wasn’t made for Randall.

Also the wide throat doesn’t look like an 80’s sheath to me.

Miles--

I would like to see the knife.

I recall that Johnson did make sheaths for Bone...but when I was buying from Bone I did not make any particular note about the sheaths that came with his knives.

Could it be that you have a correct match?

I also recall that Bone models tended to mimic RMK designs.

I no longer have the literature that I got from Bone, otherwise I could maybe help you evaluate the pairing that you have.

the BONE is an S-guard knife so I would imagine it's not correct. I could be wrong, will get a photo of it up shortly

The JRB "appears" to be made for a Model #4 or something similar. What is puzzling if the "1"-6 on the back of the sheath? I think it's earlier than 80's, ranging over the 70's decade, probably early-mid, judging by the wide throat.
If Maurice Johnson had "specifically" made the sheath for Ralph Bone, an impression of a dog's "BONE" was normally stamped into the sheath...just sayin',

Capt. Chris--

A couple of us agree with your thought that the sheath was not made for a straight knife like the RMK Model 1.

Without Ralph Bone's literature to go back to, I certainly don't remember what blade styles and nomenclature he used. Maybe his number "1" was similar to RMK's Model 4?

I kick myself more than once for letting somebody have all the old catalogues and brochures from makers in the 1970's and after!

Relative to "all of this", check out Johnny Kemp's "Bull Dogs"! One is crown and one is in regular sambar stag. The regular stag-handled one is much newer, probably late 70's and the very thin spacers were John Kemp's own idea & doing.
The crown stag with 2 medium reds, 1 medium blue and 2 thin whites is much older, i.e. late 60's or early 70's. Little known fact to many is an easy reference to age clarification on "some" of Maurice Johnson's earlier leather wares was the crossed revolver & knife stamp he used...
Just sayin'...and I hope this helps,
