Help me choose my next knife

Help me choose my next knife - 08/18/20 09:58 PM

I am considering my next Knife order and would like some opinions based on your experiences.

I'm trying to choose between:

A Model 5, 6 inch with Micarta and wrist thong

A Model 15 Single hilt, BPH, thumb notches, wrist thong

I have seen some single hilt 15's on here and like the look. I cant say I like it any better than the classic look of the 5.

Does anyone have any love/hate issues with their choice of these blades?

My Randall inventory is a Model 11, 3 inch Model 10 and a Denmark Special due to be delivered next month. This next order will be for a large knife, I am leaning towards 01 tool steel, Michigan is a long way from the ocean.

Thanks for the help.

Model 5-5 Bradford Angier, includes 01 carbon steel, Nickel silver single hilt squared, black micarta handle, wrist thong and compass. You even have 1 more option left for finger grips or stainless steel blade, but I prefer the carbon.

I owned a 5-6 and found it was just too much blade for camping, food prep, and general use. Sold it, bought a 5-5, and never looked back. smile

# 15-5 1/2" solves the problem of: 5" or 6"? I will try to post pics today of a couple to help aid you in your decision.
Best, Capt. Chris
PS: (+) you get a full, exposed tang, knife for incredible strength...CCS

Thanks for the input guys and the offer of pictures. I like the overall look of both.

Capt. Chris is there much weight difference?

I am partial to the Model 15. Here are two of mine, both with single hilt, and both O1 steel. One has square hilt top, cut down tang, and BP handle; the other has standard rounded hilt top, standard full length tang, and finger grips:

Brian,
I just weighed a Model #5-6" with nickel silver double hilt and Elforyn (Westy) handle and it weighed in, just under 10 ounces (call it 9 1/2). Then I weighed a Model #15 with nickel silver single hilt and black micarta border patrol handle at 12 ounces even! I definite difference!
Hope this helps, Capt. Chris

What about a Model 5-5" Bradford Angier weight?

Rob and Steve thanks for the images. Capt. Chris thanks for the details.

Even at 12oz I don;t think the weight is an issue. I have several years in with a Marine Kabar and they are 11.2 They both are fine knives but I think I am going with the 15.

Model 15, Green Micarta, BPH handle, single hilt, thumb notches, waxed sheath.

I truly appreciate the help. Capt. Chris be looking for the PayPal.

Re: Help me choose my next knife - 08/20/20 08:21 AM

For Brian's benefit (& anyone else who is interested) I offer the following:
* #15's come "standard" with "no spacers"
* #15's come configured and forged for a full, exposed tang
* Windsor & Holzinger's examples are "non-standard"
* Both of their examples are "CDT" (cut down tang) variants
Below our the fresh-shot pics of the #15 that I weighed in at 12 ounces. A "CDT" version (which has spacers) would weigh "less" as we are losing that thick (1/4") blade stock, which normally runs for-to-aft!
Hope this helps, Capt. Chris
PS: My example also has options of:
* BCP (Bowie Clip point)
* Stainless
* TN (Thumb Notches)
* Nickel silver single hilt
* BPH (Border Patrol Handle)

Brian
Don’t over look the Model 16 Special fighter
You get all that with a model 1 blade and can get single hilt
Could be a little bigger though

Thanks for the suggestion Sharpi, but I will stick with the 15 for this order.

Nice adventure rig Mic. I carry a 3 inch Lew Horton S&W 624 in a Diamond D guide Holster. The LH 624 has a K Frame Grip on a N Frame, chambered in .44 Special.

Re: Help me choose my next knife - 02/27/21 12:07 PM

I got a call from Captain Chris a few days ago. My new knife is ready to ship.

There was a mix up, on the sheath It will all go in the mail when that gets switched.

He sent me a few pictures to enjoy until I can have it in hand. This blade will end up going to my third Grandchild, due in April. I have a few years to put some memories on it until they are big enough to hold it.

Model 15, single hilt, thumb notches, Green Micarta, Boarder Patrol

I would share those pictures with you but am not seeing a way to attach them.

Re: Help me choose my next knife - 02/27/21 04:12 PM

Maybe this will help:

(Note that the file manager says that "the Max. file size is 1.95 MB," so you will have to reduce the size of any picture larger than that.)

Great choice for your next Randall! AND isn’t it great to be able to ask for help and ideas in choosing? Another great reason to be a member of this group! I do really like the #15 and, like Chris, really like the BCP blade grind.

Thanks, I plan to rotate between it an my Denmark. The Denmark is for my Granddaughter, the 15 is for another grandchild due in April.

I will put some memories on them until they are big enough to use them. The pictures are from us cutting pumpkins to feed the chickens.

Nice knives, Mick. I have a similar 15, but it doesn't look exactly like yours. What material did you choose for the handle, please?

Steve,

Mick's is standard Linen Green Micarta, your 15 CDT was the Canvas Green Micarta not provided with the full tang models...
