Bug-out / Rub out RMK BUILD!! - 06/06/20 03:27 PM

OK Crew,
I am slammed-down, em-bedded in my shop, and praying for things to change around here! I suppose ya'll are in the same boat as well. Tropical storm Cristobal (beware of anything named "Chris" in any language) is blasting me with over 2 inches of rain, so far and another couple expected before he gets on by me!
Riots in the streets and, of course, the rioters and protesters are doing such a fine job of social distancing?? I'm ready for hunting season so I can get the hell out of here! Man-o-man: It's un-ending, isn't it?
OK: Quit bitchin' and get to your point Cap! Fair enough. Here goes. HOW ABOUT A DISTRACTION?! Why don't we build a killer RMK and, with a
topic that's en-vogue right now! How about a "bug-out" or a "rub-out" knife? A
The kind of knife you'd grab if you were blastin' out the door to get away from it all and, at the same time, one that would offer you good protection for whatever might occur.
Just curious ROLL CALL VOTE! R U:
A) All-IN
B) SIDE-LINED ON THIS ONE
...Let me hear from ya'!
Thanks, Capt. Chris

OK, CREW<
Let's toss around some ideas. A knife to aid you if you have to "bug out" and one that will equally "rub out" someone, or something, that puts you in harm's way. What do you think?
Rules? OK: Everyone who contributes is eligible to buy chances for this completed knife. That's it for "rules".
Extra credit? Photos help tell your story and give visual aid to assist everyone in trying to "get it" with regards to your ideas and suggestions. Every Crew member who posts photos will get their name in the boonie cap for a prize!
Let's roll!

Being creative here:

Okay, for something for general utility, how about a carving set? Knife for fileting fish, cutting almost anything; fork for serving, general chores; sharpener to keep everything ready.
And for defense, just use the old Randall .45

Re: Bug-out / Rub out RMK BUILD!! - 06/07/20 05:19 PM

How about a pair or trio of Model 10's? Unique handle material or each one having a different handle material.

A Battle Buddy would be cool! However, I don't believe they can be ordered with teeth anymore.

A #1, 5 or 6 inch with ST/STN grind would be cool.

Re: Bug-out / Rub out RMK BUILD!! - 06/07/20 05:54 PM

Here is a late "A".

I have been looking for an excuse to try and build a #15 CDT. It's small enough to conceal, large enough to be useful in many ways.

The CDT gives some great grip configuration options, especially if it is made from a weather-resistant material like say, micarta.

I also like David's suggestion that a Randall 1911 would be a good companion if the need to bug out occurs.

If you ask me a Model 5-6 carbon (ease of sharpening when bugging out) sawteeth, single squared hilt, tear drop handle with Capt Bone linen micarta (better visibility and durability) wrist thong and compass as backup. A variant of the pictured knife. Picture is from your website Capt hope that’s alright.

I think something with a full tang would be good for the situation you have described. I have a stainless Model 15 with sawteeth on order from the Capt. as we speak that I plan to use for kayaking (Among other things). I like the shorter blade for carrying when seated.

I do like Tony's idea of the Model 14 with sawteeth. That was my first Randall that I bought many years ago (Back in the early 80's). It now belongs to my son:

I also had a Model 16 with sawteeth for many years. That one now belongs to my son-in-law:

OK Crew,
It's time to thin the herd and cast your 1st votes. Too much to chose from and way too many option choices to even venture to guess exactly where we'll wind up. I suppose the 1st votes should be for blade design, length and options associated with that blade.
Let's start a quick discussion as to blade length. If I were building one for me, I know what I would chose...but this ain't about me. The blade should have enough length to serve useful for many tasks. It may not do all of those tasks perfectly..."BUT"...(There Ya; go)...it'll get 'em done!
Please consider the following:
A) 5 inch blade
B) 6 inch blade
C) 7 inch or longer blade
This is "not" an official roll call yet. Just let's see where we are going. Sawteeth or No Sawteeth will be examined shortly. Thanks for the overwhelming support for this build....(& the photos!)

If we go with 12-9 14 grind, then C
If we go with something comfortable to carry, then A, like an Angiers Special
If we go with an all-purpose 6-7" blade, then B

I pick C and hope we head for the monster whacker 12-9 14 grind.

Re: Bug-out / Rub out RMK BUILD!! - 06/10/20 01:25 PM

I think an 18 makes the most sense in this build, but I’m not sure the available options would make for a memorable one. Might that be also be true for the 14? I’ve seen the 12-9 with a 14 grind suggested here. That gets my vote.

Some fun options in "big knife" world:
* MDL16 diver, NS2, ST
* MDL12-9 with 14grind
* 8" Sasquatch (likely outside the reach of this build)
* MDL5-7 (or 5-8), NS2, NSB, ST, leather, commando handle shape

Certainly agree with both of you, those "exposed tang" knives don't give us much room on handle/butt options. I have a 15CDT from a previous forum build, it's one of the "oh nice!" type of knives in my collection.

Going CDT (on the 14) does take away one option that has been discussed above: ST

Re: Bug-out / Rub out RMK BUILD!! - 06/10/20 03:17 PM

Rocky makes a good point on the CDT variant of the #14. Also consider this: Just on "STANDARD" (exposed tang knives) this is available
* Carbon
* Stainless
* Sawteeth
* Sawteeth. No sawteeth blade grind
* Hilts
a) Standard heavy brass
b) Standard heavy nickel silver
c) FCH in brass
d) FCH in nickel silver
e) #1 style hilt in brass
f) #1 style hilt in nickel silver
g) Brass single hilt
h) Nickel silver single hilt
i) Brass single hilt / Squared top
j) Nickel silver single hilt/ Squared top
* Handle material
a) Black micarta
b) Green micarta
c) CW (G-3, G-10, Various micartas, etc.)
* Handle shapes
a) 4 finger grip
b) Single finger grip
c) Border patrol
* Sheaths
a) tan
b) waxed
c) black
* Name plates
a) Brass
b) Nickel silver
* Blade etching
a) 1 line
b) 2 lines
...& and I'm probably leaving something out.
Also: For the purpose of this build (which we have already gotten away from to some degree) let's not build a #18...if you know what I mean.
Best, Capt. Chris

Never had any Randall saw teeth get hung up trying to cut, going in or coming out, on any soft tissue. I've also never wished for two sharp edges when trying to cut metal or wood. Have wished for saw teeth.

OK Crew,
With the exception of a stainless blade, the possibilities for this "Bug-Out" RMK are endless and many have been mentioned (& some illustrated) here, thus far. So...Let's begin and move from tip to butt!
1st: Blade configuration...4 options
A) Standard blade shape (leave it alone)
B) Sawteeth
C) STN (Sawteeth grind, without the teeth)
D) TB (Top bevel sharpened)
There are advantages to all 4...BUT... that's not for me to decide...it's up to the Crew. I can tell you sawteeth, as far as personal defense, is the worst option but as a survivalist knife has merit.
How about a little discussion before I put this to a vote? If, in the course of this discussion, it becomes apparent of an obvious choice, we just might vote to carry on to the next segment of the build. Let's hear from you!
Thanks, Capt. Chris

Looks like wrist thong is a very popular option, why?? I have a bunch of knives with WT holes in them, never use em. Obviously there's value when on the water, but I've tried using them when skinning deer and never saw the value, please tell me what I'm missing.

Re: Bug-out / Rub out RMK BUILD!! - 06/24/20 10:04 PM

It was supposed to be for when your fighting, in olden times.
If it got wedged in a bone or whatever and was pulled from your hand you wouldn't lose it.
This is more of a lanyard style set up. A thong would be spun up tight to your wrist.
As for skinning you can let go of the knife if you need the use of both hands instead of dropping it on the ground. Just my take on it.
Posted by: pappy19

Re: Bug-out / Rub out RMK BUILD!! - 06/25/20 12:27 AM

Chief is right, especially with bigger game like elk and moose, while inside the cavity, you can drop the knife, use 2 hands, and then easily recover your knife. Obviously around water, the safe thing to do is have a wrist thong. All of my users have wrist thongs, and I use them.

Pap
Posted by: nate-dogg

Re: Bug-out / Rub out RMK BUILD!! - 06/25/20 12:32 AM

I don't ever feel the need to use the wrist lanyard when gutting my deer. In fact I like to be able to sit it down and have both hands free. But I always use the lanyard when rinsing the blood and fat from the knife in the nearby Creek or River. If you drop the knife in moving water then it's gone more than likely.

Re: Bug-out / Rub out RMK BUILD!! - 06/25/20 01:52 PM

Be it far from me to throw water on your fire "but" let's keep in mind what this knife is for.
Wrist thong: I like them and use them on my "users" for several things, among them are:
* Tied properly to prevent losing your knife overboard. I think there is a thread on this.
* To "pull" my knife out of something it is stuck in. This is especially true when you kill wild boars and sows, in your trap, and the kill doesn't go quite as "clean" as it should. (& it happens)
* The "most" use is to hang the knife, while skinning & dressing game, to do other tasks as well as to hang it up to "dry", once your cleaning is done and the knife is well washed/rinsed with soap & water.
Something can be lost to integrity of a true survival/fighter when the handle material is drilled for a wrist thong, however. What should "also be considered" is a butt cap on this knife. It will give a full tang throughout the entire length of this bad boy..."&"...you can still have a wrist thong, without any compromise, except the fact that it uses up "2" options.
Just Sayin' Crew (& you know: I don't care "what we build")

OK CREW,
Looks as though another option has been selected, although, once again, without a formal "vote". By my calculations the preference for hilt material stands at:

* Nickel silver- 11
* Brass- 2

If there are no objections, I think we'll "call it". So...Just to recap:

* RMK Model #5-7"
* Carbon steel blade
* Sawteeth (Option #1)
* Nickel silver single hilt (Option #2)
* Squared top hilt- N/C (Option #3)
...We've got 3 options on this bad boy and are only being charged for "2"! Good job! Let's talk "SPACERS"!

* Dress it up
* Standards

Re: Bug-out / Rub out RMK BUILD!! - 06/26/20 08:16 AM

I understand Mike. I know where you're going. My choice in spacers would not have made a difference, with regards to the handle material, color or anything else. You can't go wrong with the RMK standard red, white & blue. Other options, like all black spacers or all red spacers are also at N/C, therefore an option without screwing with our 5-limit!
We'll see where this is going. I feel, any minute now, our "Chief" is going to pipe up for a nickel silver collar...(Wait for it...Wait for it...Drum roll)??

What colors of g3, g10, and Micarta are our options from the stash? Maybe that will help change some minds!

Re: Bug-out / Rub out RMK BUILD!! - 07/02/20 05:56 PM

I have brown canvas micarta, Also a few laminates but there's no telling what color they'll turn out to produce. I have ivory paper micarta. I also have A/I,,,and nobody knows where to classify that, including the shop. I have white pearlite synthetic. (Looks like bowling ball material. Oh yeah: "&" Bone Linen Micarta.
G-3 in brown or reddish brown (Linen and canvas-based. G-10 in Lime green, off white and orange but the orange is only large enough for 3/16" stock knives, i.e. 1" thick material.
Hope this helps, Capt. Chris

Hey Captain,

I think one of the browns would be nice. I would like to see the brown micarta as a first pick or the G3 in brown from your stash. With the other options, we would have the makings of a real nice knife.

As best I can tell, no votes have changed. I voted A for the R&B micarta because it’s a good looking, tough material and because, being shop supplied, it shouldn’t add to the cost of the build as much as the Shop and the Captain would charge to use something from his stash. That’s my logic — any converts?

Captain — are my thoughts as to pricing correct?

OK CREW:
Things seen to have run-amuck, so-to-speak. In the interests of clarity, let me offer the following.
* Remember:
* Choice "A" was "behind" BOTH "B" & "C", as is still the case.
* Nothing has been decided, 4 sure, on any of this.
* I have already been hard-at-work on a Plan B & C!
OK: So...before we travel much further down these slippery slopes, let's start below with a quick-pic of what I can offer for "CW" for this build, if wanted: Found below are:
* Centered back: A long piece of reddish-brown canvas micarta
* From left-to-right in the "row":
Paper Ivory Micarta, Lime Green G-10 (commercial), Reddish-brown linen micarta, bone linen micarta, Pearlite material.
* Front center:
A/I (Alternate Ivory)

Happy 4th Crew!
I want ya'll to know that I have submitted specs to the Randall shop for "2" knives, of which you may be interested in. I know there is a debate about costs for this knife build. I reckon this might help those issues. Consider the following:

A) RMK Model #5-6", Sawteeth, Nickel silver single hilt (Squared top), Red, white & blue spacers, Red & blue micarta handle, Compass, Wrist thong and a Model "C" sheath, upgraded to waxed leather!
B) RMK Model #5-6"-Nickel silver single hilt (Squared top), All black spacers, Maroon micarta handle, Compass, Wrist thong and a Model "C" sheath, upgraded to black leather!
This can...or cannot influence this build. That's up to you. I would be most willing to offer one...or "both" of these fine knives for raffle in this build...or not. I have no problem selling these knives all by my lonesome.
Furthermore: Regardless of your decision on one or both of these knives, I will "still" build your "Bug-Out" with handle material from The Captain's "STASH"!!
The choice is yours.
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Re: Bug-out / Rub out RMK BUILD!! - 07/07/20 03:14 PM

I’m uncertain as to where we are in this Build, BUT, I’m for:
-“Centered-back: a long piece of reddish-brown canvas micarta”
AND....
-Cap’s option (A) #5-6”, sawteeth, red & blue micarta, etc. with No Hone sheath
AND
-Cap’s option (B) #5-6”, no sawteeth, maroon micarta, etc with No Hone sheath
Three #5-6” knives to be raffled and won! Whoopi-Boy-O, are we having fun now or what?!!
Let’s get’er done!!!

A) RMK Model #5-6", Sawteeth, Nickel silver single hilt (Squared top), Red, white & blue spacers, Red & blue micarta handle, Compass, Wrist thong and a Model "C" sheath, upgraded to waxed leather!

I'm liking this one too! While it's not as "exotic" as handle material from the stash, it would certainly get the job done, with a bit of patriotic flair!

Captain, it doesn't matter to me but for fairness to Sharpie, I think his number 95 and my number 94 on the list should be switched since in his post #188917 he asked for #94 first. I'd feel bad if the winning number was 94 and I won when he requested that number before me. Or if nobody cares you can leave it be.
