Tulsa "BUILD"? - 11/02/19 10:19 AM

OK members,
I know we have a build going on over on BMK's forum and I don't want to mess with that..."BUT"...Here's the "deal":
TK & I are headed out in the early morning hours on Wednesday, November 6th to set up at the Wannenmacher's Tulsa Arms Gun & Knife Show! This is the largest gun show in the world! It also affords me the opportunity to "shop" for handle material...just like I do at The Blade Show.
What I'm proposing here is that we do a "Tulsa Build" with a piece of hand-select (literally) handle material that I pick up at the show! I just want to know one thing: ROLL CALL VOTE!!! Are you:
A) "IN"
B) "OUT"
Thanks, Capt. Chris
PS: A typical Tulsa set=up...CCS

Re: Tulsa "BUILD"? - 02/11/20 11:00 AM

OK Everybody,
Here goes! I promised to fetch up some handle material at the most recent Tulsa show so we could build a one-of-a-kind Randall knife. You'll notice 3 examples, shown below. Unfortunately, I could only find material of proper size to build 3/16" stock knives but it's nice stuff, never-the less:
Left-to-right:
A) Red Mallee
B) Pink Ivory
C) Cocobola
The last build consisted of 2 Model #8's, one standard and one old style. Those knives should be completed within the next 90 days, FYI. I hope we can agree on a way-cool RMK to build with one of these examples.
This build will be a little different. At the end, anyone getting in will simply add their name to the list. I will assign numbers, starting at #1 and continuing until all names have a corresponding number. The Random Draw (computer search) will determine which number (Crew member) will have the choice to purchase this knife...or not?? I will chose "3" names.
Also" Anyone bringing in a new crew member will get an additional number. If a couple of crew members feel energetic and want to go the extra mile, by signing up "5" new members, their name will go in the hat for a way-cool door prize also to be given away.
1st things 1st: Let's vote for one of these great examples of their species of wood, thanks.
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

One thing to think about is if we all go for a raffle and in the end, the total raffle amount doesn't cover the total cost, the winner could pick up the difference, which would still be way less than the total cost.

Re: Tulsa "BUILD"? - 02/15/20 09:22 AM

OK Crew:
With 13 votes in, thus far, we have a 12-1 decided vote for PINK IVORY! That's what we will go with. I appreciate the support for this build and hope we can swell the numbers during the build. Remember: Ya' can't have at it unless you participate!
On to the next order of business. This piece measures just a tad over 1" in diameter x 4 1/2" in length. This will meet the requirements for almost all RMKs with a blade material of 3/16". There should be a couple of exclusions that I have found, over quite a bit of time building these things, that should not be considered. They are:
* Model #11's
* Model #22-4 5/8"
* #6-9", Large Filet
These models sport a more robust blade shape and depth and I believe this wonderful piece of pink ivory would yield a handle too smallish to be compatable with them.
So...As is usually the case, let's talk it out, express our preferences and decide what we're going to undertake!
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Suggestion--maybe jumping the gun.

Model 7, either blade length, Stainless Steel, Model 6 blade grind, NS Hilt, Black and Aluminum, Wrist Thong, Duralumin Butt Cap.

Handle shape? Not sure what the stick of wood will accommodate, but on the smaller knife it might allow any of the shapes.

I think the option for the Model 6 grind is no charge?

So...If there are no objections, I think we should vote between the 2 tied at the top and come up with the knife we're going to build so we can move on...What say you? Re: Tulsa "BUILD"? - 02/26/20 07:54 PM

Thanks for the votes. This time the #5-4" won out. I hope all of those "other choice choosers" will stick around and participate. As for the build: We are building:
* RMK Model #5-4 inch, Small Camp & Trail Model!
Standard this knife comes in carbon steel, "with" thumb notches, a brass single hilt, red, white & blue spacers, a stag handle and a Model "B" sheath in tan leather. There is no room on the sheath's front panel to add a hone pocket so that's out of the running.
Now then. How are we going to trick this pony? Let me hear your thoughts?
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Re: Tulsa "BUILD"? - 02/26/20 08:52 PM

Since we’re using the pink ivory for the handle, I’d suggest a single NS hilt, with red and aluminum spacers. Cap’n — does the size of the ivory you have limit us to a “standard” handle shape ( I’m thinking a 22 handle with a crow’s beak butt cap....)?

This piece of pink ivory, being the shop's minimum size for this knife, would not be a good candidate for a #22 handle shape as there just isn't enough there there!
Also: CW, regardless of the original handle material "is/counts" as an option.
How about we decide if we want:
* Carbon
....or....
* Stainless

Good morning Crew:
By a vote of 9-4 a stainless steel blade wins! Thumb notches are standard. Pink ivory wooden handle has been decided. So...What's next?
We still need to decide upon the spacers (or collar) and a butt cap, butt plate or neither, along with a wrist thong or compass. Still a ways to go including other option possibilities (HILT)? (SHEATH)?
Any ideas?

Re: Tulsa "BUILD"? - 02/29/20 07:59 AM

Mel's arrangement might look nice with this wood:

Brass hilt
Brass and red spacers
Compass
wrist thong

With the CW and stainless, this would use up the five options.

The black sheath would be optional for me, maybe let the winner decide if they want it?

Thanks for all the input and I, just to troll against the tide, agree with REK. Nickel silver looks great with pink ivory...and ya'll "KNOW" I don't care what we build. Brass hilt with brass spacers (I would go brass & black) only uses up one option, a plus to consider as well.
Weekend's coming to an end soon and on Monday night we'll see the flow and move on. It looks like a brass hilt is leading...

The problem with "just letting the winner chose" is that it delays the finished build by 2 months. I have to submit specs next week & had scheduled this knife to be on those specs.
Here's some "factoids" for everyone to ponder:
A) No compass requests, strictly to preserve nice wood on the end of pink ivory (which has very little grain to admire), is counter-productive!
B) Adding the compass increases the pricing on this build by an additonal $35.00!

Ok...Ok...
Here's the deal. "We" start a build one way. We vote on options, just like we have always done. We are now down to a third of the participants "because" of the initial "start" of the build being geared to finish one way and, in reality, the majority is now "out"!
Here's what "I'm" going to do and there's no vote on this one because I'm on my last nerve with this. I will post photos of the finished build and "anyone" who still wants in can get in...for as "much" as they care to get in for will be able to, so long as they participated in the build. We will have a 100 number raffle, just like the old days @ $6.00 per chance of 5 for $25.00. If we don't sell "ALL" 100 #'s everyone gets their money back and the knife will get listed on my website.
"That" should be pleasing enough for everyone, I hope.
Best, Capt. Chris
