Something else Randall doesn't offer much anymore?

Something else Randall doesn't offer much anymore? - 07/25/19 09:11 PM

Speaking of stuff Randall might or might not do anymore...

I'm certainly no expert, but I thought about this #2-8 Perry Miller had made up in early 2000s.

It's got a Maroon Micarta handle. And even with the standard (but very cool) commando handle shape, I count 7 options.

And it came with a nice opposite-side-strap sheath, marked 2-8 C (custom for curved hilt).

It would be cool to see some more knives from the past with lots of options. What do you have? I bet there's some great stuff out there.

Thanks, Gary

Collar forward curved & a butt cap change the look of a model 2 a lot! Great looking knife!

Thanks guys!

I'd love to see some more examples of high option count Randall knives. Or with options no longer available.

I have late 80s #7-4 1/2 with 6 options and an RBS with all the bells and whistles and discontinued options, but I'll wait to see some others.

First, that is a sweet knife...

Second, I count 9 options, but I bet I'm off. It can get so tricky trying to count options... never as straightforward as one imagines.

Very cool knife.

I think 12 if you include "custom dealer grind," 13 if you include diamond hone as an option.

Just for clarity, when you order a BCP a TB in usually included, unless otherwise requested. My addition of that option is just to show one example of an RMK with a "lot" of options. Not all were chargeable, in this particular case.
You can order "TB" on a lot of models @ a $30.00 charge. Model #3, #4, #5 & #7 for example, although a "BCP" option is not german to this option...on these models.
Hope this helps, Capt. Chris

James, what handle material is that?

Ah, now I get it. Sure I do... smile

I was trying to count options away from standard options on your Stanaback Special. But I wasn't even entirely sure what standard options the Stanaback comes with.

But even in the more obvious cases, it can be like going down a rabbit hole.

Thanks, Gary

Rocky,
german: Related to...verses "German" (what you're thinking of). It is (the 1st) pronounced as though it is spelled: Germain.
Best, Capt. Chris

I remember when the 5 option limit was imposed. I had a few orders placed that had to be modified as a result but, even with the limit on options I think you can still do some unique configurations. You still can't beat the dealer specials with nearly no limit on options.

Tom--

I thought that orders in place before the 5-option limit were grandfathered and put through production.

I think bought some at stock sales that customers had not taken delivery on that had more than five options.

Can't say about orders through the shop but in "07" and before I got tuned in to Capt. Chris I bought some knives from Dave Harvey @ Nordic, even back then he had a lot of RMK examples on his web site. I had my dream #12-9 14G with about 7 options ordered and I remember getting the email informing me of the new option limit. Just one of those configurations that will never be.

Thinking maybe either the dealers' orders were handled differently by the shop versus individual customer orders that were already there, or some of the dealers had not submitted all their customer orders yet.

Whatever happened, we are where we are.

Thought I'd kick-start this again.

Setting aside the fact that this version of Rick Bowles's special hasn't been made for a while and that it’s ivory, this is about options and option combinations…

Stuff you don’t see anymore.

This knife has two options(*) no longer offered for quite some time (not counting the ivory), one semi-rare option(**) and one option(***) that predates it becoming an available option on later knives. (According to Rick himself, who was kind enough to provide a detailed assessment of this knife many years ago).

I thought it might be cool to show it.

The Knife:
“RBS” - 5 ˝” stainless blade, ivory single finger grip handle, NS single hilt, NS collar, NS butt cap with thong hole, nut on butt cap and black spacers. Johnson Smooth-back sheath. (Late 80s).

(*) NS collar on a SFG handle and Exposed Nut on butt cap (non-leather handle).
(**) SFG option in ivory (on an “RBS).”
(***) Dealer supplied Nickle Silver butt.

I’d love to see some more rare or discontinued options/ combos…

Thanks Guys, Gary

My favorite blade of Rick's.
Love a collar on ivory.
