Po'-Man's Build?
Seeing as how we have a current build which will be out of some folks "financial realm", how 'bout a cheap one to run, in tandem? Here is my suggestion: Let's build a knife with the following parameters:
* Standard blade configuration & blade steel for that model
* Non-chargeable options for the hilt, spacers, etc.
* Total costs to be "under" 500 Bucks!
............What say you?..............

How about something like a Triathlete with scales added?

Re: Po'-Man's Build? - 10/17/18 12:19 PM
How about a Model 5-4 small Camp & Trail set up like a mini Bradford Angier?
My other vote would be for Model 15 with Sawteeth or a maybe ST/NST blade profile and a Single brass hilt. Stainless would be nice, but I think that would put it slightly above the $500.00 mark……
Wally: 1 st off: It's a "shop" not a factory.
2nd: No options on Model #10's, other than handle choices.
Hope this helps, Capt. Chris

Posted by: oldguy
Re: Po'-Man's Build? - 10/17/18 06:22 PM
Remember the GTR, 21, Denmark Special, 5-4 and the 11-3 comes with stag as standard equipment and you can sub the handle material for another shop supplied handle material as a No Charge option. Just saying. But I would go with a 11-3 or Denmark Special as The DS is like a heavy duty Model 7.
oldguy
Yes, name etching is available when you order a Model #10...from me..."or" THE "SHOP"! So are sheath choices, i.e.: Tan, waxed, black and LH or RH..."BUT"...no blade configurations, other than catalog styles.
Best, Capt. Chris

Re: Po'-Man's Build? - 10/17/18 06:39 PM
I don't think it's a "no charge" option to sub out of stag....????
Stag? On a #10 or something else? Oh Luuucy: You got some 'splaining to do!
Best, Capt. Chris

Re: Po'-Man's Build? - 10/17/18 06:42 PM
You can take a knife that has stag and the shop will swap it out for a shop supplied handle material such as micarta or some woods. Check with Chris, Rookie. oldguy

Re: Po'-Man's Build? - 10/17/18 06:44 PM

God almighty! What happened to civility by "everyone"? I'm past sick of all this childhood bullshit and, if it doesn't stop and I mean, boy-howdy, RIGHT NOW, this build or any other is history!

Capt Chris, OK understood. Is what I said chargeablr or no charge?
A model 10 with a stag handle, I like that idea. Can you get the pouch sheath waxed?
Wally - Sounds like you are thinking of a Crider Special. Back in my corn breeding days, I used my Crider Special (7 inch blade with saw teeth) to cut and split stalks. Does the Captain know when the last one was made?

Re: Po'-Man's Build? - 10/17/18 10:29 PM
If a knife starts off with a stag handle, then there is no charge to change to use any other shop supplied materials...however, any of the customer supplied exotics are subject to an increase.

F - Denmark
Ok all you "po' boys" (& Girl),
We're going to build a Denmark Special. Here's some particulars you may find interesting and/or helpful.
Denmark Sporting Goods was a staple in the Orlando, Fl. market for decades. In the days prior to big box stores and well before Al Gore invented the internet, Denmarks was the place to go for hunting and fishing gear. I know (and so does Mike Mason) first hand, how fully-equipped Denmarks was.
I managed Kleisers Sports Shop in West Palm Beach, Florida for a decade in the late 1970's- the late 1980's. Bob Kleiser first opened his store on 1935! That's right, "prior" to the existence of Randall Made Knives! We were an authorized "Orvis" shop and carried the very finest hunting and fishing equipment in the Southeastern United States. Through Orvis, I got my introduction to John Newell (Orvis shop in Winter Park, Fl.) and Walter Hudson @ Denmarks!
Both of these very fine stores, although not offering as much product as Kleisers, were known for "the place to go" in Central Florida for your every need, with regards to hunting and fishing! Both Bo & Gary Randall did business with these stores and "both" of these stores were Randall dealers at the time.
I'll show a couple of examples of their Randall "Dealer Specials" as this build continues. While John Newell's Orvis shop stuck with his initial choice for a dealer's knife, Denmarks underwent several "drafts", if you will, before deciding on the knife we all know today!
The RKS's 2nd "Club Knife" was a similar version to the finalized Denmark Special, which had been retired with the closing of Denmarks Sporting Goods. After the RKS "Club Knife" was completed and all orders were filled, The Denmark Special was re-introduced by the Randall shop as one their "non-catalog" offerings where it still resides today!
Standard equipment of today's Denmark Special includes the following:
* Hand forged carbon steel blade
* 01 tool steel used
* 4 1/2" blade length
* 3/16" blade stock
* #6 blade grind
* Brass single hilt
* Red, white & blue spacers
* Sambar stag handle
* Model B sheath, in tan leather
* No hone sheath
Current catalog price is: $380.00, well under our $500.00 pricing ceiling! The #6 blade grind makes for an excellent filet and kitchen knife as well as great companion knife in the woods! You folks picked a good example for a build!
Options? Many are available. Let's hear from all ya'll...I've said enough! (But I hope it helped)...
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Model 22 handle!
Or
Border Patrol handle.
Green Micarta. Or Walnut.
Any one of these combinations would look good, I think...
A lot of Denmark Specials I see with straight handles ... Nice
but the 22 Handle or Border Patrol is a little more visually interesting,
and possibly a good feel in the hand.
Tony
The "Teardrop"-shaped handle is doable!

* Randall Model DENMARK SPECIAL
* 4 1/2" carbon steel blade
* Nickel silver single hilt

Do I need to be a financial member to order or is it to late. No stress either way
Let me know. I am in Australia as a few of you know. I have a nice smallish Collection

Since it is named after me (poor man's build) I'm gonna go with "B".

OK Crew:
I have "done the count" and votes are split between metal spacers and "other"...However: Not everyone voting for something "other" has specified exactly what??
In the interests of moving on (& seeing as how metal spacers got 14 votes, in total) we will build this Po'Boy with aluminum spacers and I will let the winner decide on red or black accompaniment.
Re-cap: Here's where we are:
* Denmark Special
* O1 carbon steel
* NS single hilt
* Ivorite
* Aluminum spacers
...Are we done? Let me hear from you.
Thanks, Capt. Chris
PS: Oh yeah...& Pappy voted twice...again!

What about a wrist thong?

Rob.
I'm with you on this!!
Back on 10-29-18 when Ivorite Handle was decided by 9 votes
7 people wanted it with teardrop shape.
Posted by: Wally
Re: Po'-Man's Build? - 11/25/18 01:15 PM
I like the teardrop shape, and a wrist thong would be fine too.
I'll order it any way ya'll decide..."BUT"...it's gettin' quickly past The Po' part!

Re: Po'-Man's Build? - 11/25/18 03:11 PM
I "think" we're at $475, add a wrist thong and it's $505.
Tear drop handle and forget the wrist thong.

Teardrop if possible.

Re: Po'-Man's Build? - 11/25/18 06:53 PM
Is there a charge for the teardrop handle?
Posted by: oldguy
Re: Po'-Man's Build? - 11/25/18 07:01 PM
I think we are at $430 right now. $380 for the knife, $25 NS Hilt and I think $25 for the spacers. oldguy
New pricing puts NS1 @ $30.00 and the DS starts @ $390.00. Spacers are $25.00

Ivorite still $55?

Re: Po'-Man's Build? - 11/25/18 08:02 PM
Wouldn't the winner have an opportunity to knock off an option to fit their budget? And it would only be known by the winner and Cap? That way, even a basic model could be won by someone that only had a certain amount to spend.

The handle material should be no charge per Scott and shop policy.

Re: Po'-Man's Build? - 11/25/18 08:05 PM
Pap, wouldn’t be much of a build that way. Might has well just draw numbers for a standard model and the winner just order what he wants on it.

Capt, thanks for the new pricing. I was using RMK’s web site prices.

Man!, just got off the phone with Cap...u guys got him a little riled, too much pettiness, sensitivity and generalized whining (griping?) Let's all take a chill pill and go back to singing cum-by-ya together!
Maybe the good Captain has cooled off to the point that I could post this without him having a heart attack...
From Wikipedia...
"Randall Made Knives, usually referred to as Randall, is an American custom handcrafted knife manufacturer founded by Walter Doane "Bo" Randall, Jr. in the U.S. The
factory and showroom is located in Orlando, Florida."
Can I apoligize in advance? It's still a
shop to me!

Good point, just thought if someone had a $500 budget, they could knock off one option to keep the wife from busting their balls. Maybe they could wash the dishes an extra few times to earn the rest. Lol.
Pap
OK Crew,
Time's almost up. Final numbers are going up this weekend!
Re-cap: Here's where we are:
* Denmark Special
* O1 carbon steel
* NS single hilt
* Ivorite

Let me hear if this is good. If not, hurry the hell up and let's get 'er done!
Thanks, Capt. Chris
PS: As some of you may know, I am battling here on 2 fronts! I am winning (but have not won) the computer/browser/posting war and the other war is still too early to call..."BUT"...we need to wrap this up. TODAY!!
Thanks again, Capt. Chris

What handle shape?
Teardrop????
Tony
Ya' know...we don't have to "decide" on a handle shape as it will come with one. Anything else is an extra 30 bucks...or so. But if ya'll want to request one, figure it out by tomorrow and I'm game!
Thanks, Capt. Chris

OK Crew,
In the interests of time, I am going to post numbers 1-30. Each & every crew member, who participated, is welcome to chose a number. Numbers will be given out on a 1st come- 1st served basis. If you chose a number, and your number is selected by the computer (Random Search), you have the right to purchase this knife. The 2019 catalog price will be used as this knife will be ordered on my 2019 specs.
I will allow the winner their personal choice of:
* Handle shape
* Sheath option
To chose your number, please post your "Top 3", right here on this thread, and I'll list them. Post your choices in order of preference. Let's attempt to do this in a priority manner. The winning number will be pulled Monday night, right before the ball game!
Thanks to everyone for an awesome build and good luck to all!
Ho-Ho, Capt. Chris

Re: Po'-Man's Build? - 12/25/18 10:40 AM
Pops has been sorta behind the 8 ball with Elizabeth's health and family Christmas obligations. .. he appreciates ya'lls "patience". He will knock out the drawing as soon as time permits.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Crew!
Health issues and family matters have taken me away, of late, but I just took a few minutes to draw the Random number for this build! This is my 3rd attempt to post it as my computer/server/browser issues are still (and apparently from now on) continuing!! I have spent more time and money on this very problem than I even want to address, to the point of new super computer/tower, software, hard drive, etc. etc...
(Don't get me started)!
Let's all congratulate crew member "BRENT" who has first refusal on this cool RMK!
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris
