Pick-N-Chose...U in?

Pick-N-Chose...U in? - 09/27/18 12:45 PM

Ok forum members,
Seeing as how I sorta' promised I would offer one, let's explore the possibilities of a forum build. Within certain requirements, I will entertain every and all suggestions..."BUT"...I am not going to address bitchin' about how long the build will take or how far out the shop is on delivery...PERIOD!!
Understood? If so, I will assemble a list of some of Randall Made Knives' very fine offerings for us to chose from. We will vote down the list until we arrive at a majority agreement on what to build. After that, we will start the process of putting it together.
In the interests of time, I would remind everyone that "CW" options (Custom-supplied materials for the handle) will take a few months longer than Randall shop-supplied handle material. The reason for this is that only 1/5th of each and every dealer order can be designated and allowable for CW.
OK: Enough disclaimers...Are you in...or out?
Let's hear from you.
Best, Capt. Chris

Hey Chris.....for the record I was not bitching about how long it was taking to build the knife I won. I was just merely stating that I wasn’t interested in a new build cause I haven’t received the last one. No big deal. I understand it takes a while to get these things built.

Thanks to everyone for their support of this project. The poll was strictly to see if a majority showed an interest. "Any" forum member is, not only allowed, but encouraged to participate! It has nothing to do with financial concerns at all. If you have something to contribute or need to ask a question...please...do so! You are not obligated to request numbers for the drawing at the end to find out who gets the purchase option.
What I am trying to accomplish with these builds is to introduce members to the "process" of ordering a knife. Showing examples of some very fine RMKs and listing some of the cans & cannots associated with that particular model. I always hear from some members, either openly on the forum build or through emails, etc. telling me that they learned something new. "That", along with saving the Randall shop a few phone call questions makes it all worth while. Also (oh...by the way...) somebody gets to buy an awesome Randall knife, at catalog price, with a much shorter wait!
I'll put some choices together today and we'll get started this evening.
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

OK Crew:
Hunting season is upon us! (Thanks God) One of the knives we are going to "pick-n-chose" from will be a Hunting knife. Spring will have come (and probably gone) when this build is nearing completion so a fishing knife will be on the list. General usage is always one of my most sought-after RMKs so there's gonna' be one of those also. Last...and never least is a Randall, set up for use by those who go in harm's way: The military!
That's the 4 categories I will have for you members to "pick-n-chose" from!
...More to come,

Re: Pick-N-Chose...U in? - 10/02/18 01:32 PM

OK Crew,
Thank you for choosing my dealer special. The "Stanaback Special" was first introduced in 1985. At that time there was only a 4 inch version. It was, at the time, the only 4 inch knife of 1/4" blade stock that the Randall shop offered. Since it's introduction, I have been fortunate enough to have been granted the latitude of 2 blade lengths, the orignal 4" "PLUS" a 4 5/8" version.
Beside the Randall Fireman, my 4 inch special is the only other 1/4" blade stock knife offered. My longer (4 5/8" version) is also forged from stainless steel blade stock and it is also 1/4" thick stock!
As has been stated earlier in this build, we are not limited to the "5-option" rule, when it comes to my specials! I have built my 4 5/8" version with as many as "13" options, the RKCC "1st Club Knife" being one of them! As "standard" equipment, here's what options are already included:
* Option #1-Special dealer blade forging
* Option #2-Top bevel sharpened
* Option #3-BCP (Bowie clip point) blade shaping
* Option #4-Hand forged stainless steel blade (440B)
* Option #5-Thumb notches
* Option #6-Custom-designed sheath(s)
Standard equipment to include the following:
* Brass single hilt
* Red, white & blue spacers
* Leather handle
* Duralumin butt cap
...The 4" version comes with a black, basket-weaved, sheath (NHS) & the longer, 4 5/8" sheath is oxblood in color and comes complete with an EZE-Lap diamond sharpening steel, secured on the front sheath panel within a tube pouch! To facilitate all of this nonsense, the sheath's (knife's) keeper strap has been re-disgned to snap, straight vertically.
I'll enclose a few photos as we go along, because those pictures are worth a thousand words. (So I've heard) I should also tell you that, at the RKCC Club Meeting at this year's Blade Show, I introduced The Stanaback, Limited III! This knife is (really) quite basic, with the exception of:
* Nickel silver single hilt
* Duralumin butt cap (radiused)
* Etching: SSP- S/N 1 thru 100
It is only available in the 4 inch version and will not be duplicated...ever again, complete with a COA (upon request). Below is mine, S/N 001...more photos to come...
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Re: Pick-N-Chose...U in? - 10/02/18 06:02 PM

Wally,
That would work for me .Especially 4 5/8 in stainless.
Posted by: oldguy

Re: Pick-N-Chose...U in? - 10/02/18 07:25 PM

Either blade length works for me. I have user SSP’s in both blade lengths. They work good. The leather handles give a good grip. Although micarta would be a little better as far as the weather.
Here is a question for the Capt, can you get the 4 5/8 model sheath as a No Hone? That style of hone is not too user friendly attached to the sheath for a user knife. I just keep the hone in my hunting bag. But from past builds I figure this one will also wind up as a safe queen. oldguy

Re: Pick-N-Chose...U in? - 10/03/18 02:02 PM

Slab stag handle is very good. Sometimes when I put a knife
with a deer handle on the table, it turns slightly
and cutting edge touches the table surface.
If the table is metal or stone, the cutting edge is blunt,
sometimes it is very annoying. But these are my cockroaches
in my head))

I wonder if can get exist slab handle with micarta/wood?

I hear ya', Bro! As for Wally's idea. Dark jade canvas micarta has not been available since the "Old Yeller" days. "IF" we are going to do a matching pair, I would suggest RMK shop-supplied handle material. I do not have the slots available to "fit in" 2 more.

A matching pair is easily gonna push over $1k, especially since we're working with a dealer special (let's unwrap those options!).

Therefore, I'm gonna vote "nyet" for the matching pair idea.

Re: Pick-N-Chose...U in? - 10/04/18 01:48 PM

the SSP starts at $595... I think... that's just with a leather handle. So $1190 BEFORE we put 1 single option/upgrade into it... It's a cute idea, but Capt. is only gonna have to worry about random number drawing 1-5 at the end of the build.
Posted by: Captain Chris Stanaback

Costs (with CW) would be around $1500.00 (+) for the pair if we "trick-it"! Ya'll know...I don't care what we build.
The best deal on a Stanaback Special is my LTD. III..."if" you're a member in good standing in the RKCC: $595.00 and you're getting the blade etching and nickel silver free..."+"...It's one of a hundred.

I would like to do 2 even if they aren't matching, & have 2 winners.

It's entirely plausible to have two winners... better to build them the same tho, to keep confusion at a minimum.

Re: Pick-N-Chose...U in? - 10/10/18 08:53 AM

OK Crew,
Starting now, we're fixin' to build a mighty fine Randall Made knife! My Stanaback Special-4 5/8" starts as follows:
* Special forging (dealer special)
* Stainless steel (440B)
* BCP (Bowie clip point)
* TB (Top bevel sharpened)
* TN (Thumb notches)
* BH1 (Brass single hilt)
* Red, white & blue spacers
* Leather handle
* Duralumin butt cap
* Special "oxblood-dyed" custom sheath
* EZE-Lap diamond sharpening steel included
* Tube front panel pouch on sheath to house the EZE-Lap
This package runs $595.00. There are some modification which can be ordered "at no additional charge"! Rounded butt cap/Thin butt cap/Brass, squared top, single hilt/All black spacers, etc.
The option list is too long to list. "THAT" will be up to whatever ya'll decide thru majority votes throughout this build. So...Come on: Let'e hear from ya'...

We should probably start with Handle material. Usually we go hilt down, buuut, the handle material would better help determine the hilt. Either brass or nickel.

I would like to see this with shop supplied Maple. Just cause it's cool looking and not always used.

Brass will look good with this wood

ROUNDED hilt is the way to go. It looks better with this
blade shape.
The majority of Stanabacks you see have rounded hilts. It just
looks better.

Finger Grips (under) ... PERFECT!

Finger grips,RH or LH decided by the winner, fine silver rounded hilt, silver and black spacers, and flat butt plate. Silver does tarnish but with a little silver polish it shines up brilliantly.

Snake: Yes, everything in your photo is doable.
Steve: Matters not to me..."BUT"...(Aaaahhh: I feel better now)...the knife will be over a $Grand$, just so everyone knows.
Hope this helps, Capt. Chris

Re: Pick-N-Chose...U in? - 10/17/18 09:21 AM

I like Steve's proposal. Maybe with a rounded silver butt cap instead of a silver butt plate. This would clearly be a 'safe queen' or display piece, but a beautiful and classy one.

As an alternative, if silver is not adopted by the forum builders, and the knife may be a "user", how about:
-finger grips, RH/LH as per winner's choice;
-NS rounded hilt;
-black and aluminum spacers;
-wrist thong;
-compass.

Nickel silver, solid brass or fine silver butt caps...your choice will make the knife totally out-of-balance and, although I care not what we build, I would still like this way-cool project to be functional...not just expensive and "safe-queenable"!
Just sayin', Capt. Chris
PS: No butt cap would "balance better"...CCS

With a solid silver butt cap: Almost $475.00. With out the butt cap: $275.00.

Re: Pick-N-Chose...U in? - 10/17/18 03:35 PM

Capt. Chris,

A couple of comments and a few questions:

1. Your point regarding the balance of the knife (unbalanced with butt cap) is well taken. I suggested the silver butt cap as a complimentary 'visual' option if the knife was to be equipped with a silver hilt and spacers (which to my mind would make it a display piece rather than a user).
-Has anyone ever used an RMK with silver hilt and/or other silver fittings?
-I've not owned or held an RMK with silver fittings. Since silver has a higher specific gravity than either brass or nickel silver, would using silver for the hilt/spacers alone (no butt cap) appreciably increase the weight of the knife, noticeably alter the balance, or otherwise render it less 'user-friendly'?

2. Silver fittings on an RMK is expensive! As James noted, probably not the most cost effective choice. A couple of questions about the silver:
-Does the silver have to be provided to the shop in a certain form or shape? Is there a minimum fineness required?
-In addition to purchasing/supplying the silver, is there an additional shop charge for working/shaping the silver (similar to the charge for customer supplied handle material)?
-Is silver more difficult to work/shape than brass or N/S?

Re: Pick-N-Chose...U in? - 10/17/18 04:56 PM

Here is an example of clean, and tarnished silver(fine)
The #7 weighs a TON!!! and there is nothing balanced about it, the #2 is not much better....the knife ya'll are building will probably be a little different.
If ya'll are planning a silver butt cap, you guys, and gals are talking about a TON of money!!
I'm not in this...just my $.02
good luck!!

All members: Fine silver is .999 fine silver as opposed to .925 which is used in jewelry making. I will pull out my "actual user", in fine silver, and photograph it, as soon as I figure out which safe it's hiding in!

Re: Pick-N-Chose...U in? - 10/17/18 06:58 PM

FWIW... it's also currently on the website as an option as well.
I would not personally go for it on a knife, but according to what we have available to us, it is listed as available...

Re: Pick-N-Chose...U in? - 10/17/18 06:59 PM

Never been available as long I have been ordering directly from the shop (1978 or so). At least "as far" as I know.

Re: Pick-N-Chose...U in? - 10/17/18 08:05 PM

If we are spending the bucks for fine silver.......Then we ought to be putting it on with something other than shop supplied wood.
If you want to put it on FWI or ox I get it. If the Captain was offering up stash material to make it all unique and then put on silver I can see it.
But if that's the only bell & nothing else out of the ordinary then I would say no.

Re: Pick-N-Chose...U in? - 10/18/18 10:04 AM

My biggest complaint about brass is how easily it tarnishes. I don't want to pay (lots) more for it to tarnish up more/faster with fine silver.

A butt cap would be good with a model25 handle if done in duralumin, but since those are unavailable for this build, a nekkid butt is fine (or maybe add a compass).

I am confused. Is this to be the next Club knife available to all members. Some members. One member. Forgive my silly question but I am new in this group
Do I need to be a member
Captain. I need info

Re: Pick-N-Chose...U in? - 11/30/18 08:31 AM

Robert,
This is not the next club knife.Over the years there have been several builds by Forum members.When everything has been decided
every person that was in on the build has a chance to win.you'll be asked to choose 3 of your favorite numbers.Only 1 number will be posted up as someone may have chosen the number prior to you.There
will be a random drawing by computer.Whoever wins has the option to
purchase or refuse the knife.Hope this helps.

In addition, if you don't win but like the build, you could still order it I've done it before myself.

Due to the fact that Cap has more trains to rob than he can catch.
Single finger grip got the most votes.
Let's talk about handle material.Everyone knows what the shop supplies so what do you say.

Look back on this thread ... handle material has been decided.

* Thuya Burl wooden handle (RMK shop-supplied)

Unless I'm wrong, which happens occasionally. grin

Actually, it being a dealer special, there are no limits on options, so we can have the compass and the wrist thong. And the winner can add their etched name as well.

Re: Pick-N-Chose...U in? - 02/13/19 09:39 AM

OK Crew,
With all of the "drama" going on of late, I think it will be a good, solid, positive thing to complete this build, choose a winner and get this knife made!...Don't you? I also think that, now that deer season is over, we'll have another build right behind this! (Perhaps with a new twist!)
So....We'll start with 25 numbers and see if we need more. ROLL CALL! On this open forum, please make a 3-number request, from 1-25, in order of preference: 1st come 1st served! Winner will be able to purchase this knife, at 2019 catalog price, with a 10 month delay.
New rules: If you don't want the knife, DON'T ENTER A NUMBER! 1st choice on the winner is FINAL! Thanks to all who helped in this build with your ideas (& opinions).
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

I'm prejudice, to that there's no denying, but that is one "Way-Cool" blade shape! Nice package Rob. We'll be building another very soon as I have a couple of pieces of handle material from Tulsa for us to chose from...to be continued...
