Short Diver ideas..... - 09/17/18 04:08 PM

I am getting back into kayaking after making the move from the California coast out to the mountains of New Mexico. The lakes in our area have recently opened up for boating, so the lovely bride and I have just bought a pair of kayaks.

Back in California, I carried a Model 16 on my kayaking trips in the Pacific ocean, S.F. bay and the various lakes around the northern part of the state. I have since given that knife to my son-in-law.

So now I am looking for something smaller than a Model 16 to use. I have narrowed the choice down to either a stainless Model 15, a Model 28 or a Combat Companion. I would like to have the full finger grip handle, single rounded brass hilt and possibly sawteeth (Still debating on the sawteeth option).

I was wondering if any of you might have pictures of something similar to this set up that you could share...

Thanks,

Mick

I have a CC/FT in stock without teeth. Here's a shot of both blade options. These knives come standard with stainless blades, black or green micarta, BPH...and, of course...FULL TANG!!
Hope this helps, Capt. Chris

Peter & Capt.,

Thanks for the pics!

I really like the looks of those with the sawteeth option.

Capt.,

Is it possible to get the full finger grip handle on the CC?

Re: Short Diver ideas..... - 09/17/18 06:05 PM

Thinking out loud, speculating...

The CC with "serrations" might be nifty for boaters, etc., since the size is more convenient than some of the other exposed tang RMKs.

Why serrations? Some of the styles of serrations on the market (think Spyderco) are super sharp and "cut both ways" if you have to cut a rope.

The RMK saw teeth were designed for ripping--aluminum and Plexiglass--and are ideal for that.

David, the diver, who I have not seen on here for some time, might have some real world experience with both saw teeth and serrations Maybe he will see this and respond.

I was thinking along the lines, similar to our "Rafting Build" we did a few years back. Freshwater/Mountain Kayaking might require a more "versatile knife", like cutting up crap if you're stranded, etc...
Just sayin',
Capt. Chris
PS: 4 finger grip, single finger grip are "not" available on a CC/FT

For my 2 cents, the Bearcamp Special would be perfect. Basically a Model 5. With the right options starting with a carbon blade- pickled, you could get close. I'd go for a single hilt myself. Second choice would be a Combat Companion with sawteeth.

Thanks for the info Capt.,

I searched, but was not able to find the “Rafting build” thread you mentioned, but I would sure like to see that one. At this point it looks like a Model 15 may end up being my final choice, as it has the full finger grip option that I am looking for.

So this is what I am looking at:

1) Model 15
2) Stainless steel blade
3) Sawteeth
4) Single brass hilt rounded on top
5) 4 finger grip handle (Green Micarta)
6) Thumb notches

Yes indeed!

Straight off of the webpage:
Quote:
standard with finger grip handle; single finger grip and border patrol available at additional charge

Also stainless without having to buy that option.

Fireman was my first direct-from-shop order. smile

Can you get the sawteeth option on the Fireman?

That I am thinking would not be possible.

Re: Short Diver ideas..... - 09/20/18 11:57 AM

Just make sure you get full tang. I'm having issues with spacers swelling.

@Can you get the sawteeth option on the Fireman?

If you could, you would be back to just about the same knife as the 4-inch Gambler with saw teeth, although the Gambler is made from 3/16-inch stock.

Or...go an inch longer and get the 5-inch Gambler in 1/4-inch steel.

My thoughts would be a model 15 on my belt, and a Spyderco salt, fully serrated, clipped to my PDF. Best of both worlds, heavy duty fixed blade, and a serrated folder for rope, fishing line, and nylon strapping. Don't forget to get the waxed sheath.

Capt.,

Two questions:

First, if I go with the CC without the FT, can I get either the 4 finger grip or the single finger grip handle on it?

Second,

Is the Model 5 with sawteeth (The Bear Camp special) still available and can that be fitted with either the 4 finger grip or single finger grip handle?

Re: Short Diver ideas..... - 09/22/18 09:26 PM

Bearcamps? No. 4 finger grip, single finger grip on a CC? Yep! You can also add a butt cap, giving you full tang construction.
...Just sayin',

Capt.,

Thanks for the info. Now it’s a toss up between a Model 15 or the CC with the single finger grip and butt cap!

I’ll send you an email about what the cost of each knife would end up running…

Can't beat any of those choices. However, the Capt. Camper special would be hard to pass up. Welcome to NM. I am in Portales.Max

My Model 15 “Short Diver” arrived today from the Capt.!

It has a stainless blade with sawteeth, single brass hilt and the single finger grip handle in green Micarta. It’s a beauty and will perfect for kayak trips and knocking around the wilderness…

Re: Short Diver ideas..... - 04/23/21 11:22 PM

Mike,
Besides the fact that it is 1/4" stock, verses 3/16" on the full tang model CC/FT, The #15 is deeper, longer and has a plethora of options available not available on the CC/FT. Handle shapes, materials thumb notches, single hilts, besides the sawteeth...no teeth grind or standard on blade shaping are available for the #15 but not the CC/FT. Model A or C sheaths also can be had on the #15.
Some of the differences,
Best, Capt. Chris

Re: Short Diver ideas..... - 04/24/21 11:47 AM

I debated back and forth for quite a while between the CC and the Model 15. In the end, I liked the thicker stock of the Model 15.

I also like the feel of the single finger grip handle. I tried a full four finger grip and it just didn’t fit my hand well. I asked for the smaller saw tooth profile, which to me, it looks better on the shorter blade.

The Captain's Model 15 custom brings back memories. I ordered the same features on a dozen Model 15's for Seal Team One, private purchases, about 20 years ago.

Great minds think alike.
